After a While
The Qi within you isn't a solid thing. It's moved by the bellows action of your lungs, the pumping of your blood by your heart. It flows in time with the pulse of Creation, waxing and waning with each breath.

As within, so without. Your senses are heightened, energized. Your mind runs quicker. You are more than what you were a moment ago.

You feel a pulse of frustration. If you had access to the Qi of a place like this when you were a child, how much more could you be by now? With that thought comes a sense of fear. You know if you are forced to leave the sect, you could backslide. The impurities you have cleansed will come back. You will lessen.

If you fail.

So, you will not fail.

That decided, the hour is getting late, and the sounds of the twilight birds are beginning to fill the air. It is time for you to make camp. Although much of the sect would be dangerous to explore in the dark, the Mudpots seem safe enough. You have not seen any truly terrible predators. Besides, staying here will save you hours of walking.

You start a pot of rice boiling over a fire and take out some smoked meat and rice wrapped in leaves that you brought from the village. The food disappears into you with a speed that surprises you. You eat what you allotted for the night, as well as most of what you had planned for tomorrow. Your body is no doubt using the resources to rebuild your body stronger.

The night is warm enough in your tent, and the night passes uneventfully. You wake and gobble the remains of your food - you will be hungry indeed by lunchtime, but you can live with that.

Cultivation is all well and good, but it is only part of what makes a cultivator a cultivator. You were gifted precious knowledge by Shao Suyin, the knowledge of a real Qi technique. However, practice will be required before you feel you can use the Coursing River Arrow in combat, and practice you will.

The Mudpots greet you with the smell of released gasses and the sight of scuttling animals. Today, you are not here to meditate. Stringing your bow, you sight at a mound of muddy earth, choosing a particular patch of white clay, and aim not with your eyes, but with your spiritual senses.

Breathe in the qi, then send it towards the target, along with the arrow. The qi knows the way, and so does the arrow. Again and again you let fly your arrows, collecting them when you have used them all, then letting them fly again, pulling the qi of the Mudpots to replenish your reserves in between shots.

A bird flies past you as you aim, hunting some frog or insect, and without thinking you trace its path with your spirit.

The arrow knows where to go. Your physical act of aiming it is merely making the world correct. All things are in their proper place.

The bird dies without a sound. Its meat is barely worth the act of dressing it, and you gain no cultivation from its flesh when you roast it for an afternoon snack.

But you have gained something much greater.

The next day, you decide it is time for you to make use of what you've learned. However, while the Mudpots are pleasant enough, with their pleasing colors and… aroma, they are not the place to find bountiful prey.

Instead, you set your feet on one of the many lazy, winding streams that run through the sect's grounds. Where there's water, there's life, and where there's life, there's prey.

Roll: 56!

Following it upstream, you find that its source is a wide, shallow river that wends its way across the landscape. Wading birds snap at fish as they stalk through the reeds that give the sect its name, the drone of mosquitoes and other flying insects is unceasing, and the afternoon sun is bright.

It is as a water buffalo approaches to quench its thirst that you become aware of one of the dangers of the river. At first, you thought the buffalo itself might be good prey - while it carries some qi, it doesn't appear to be a mighty spirit beast, and an arrow in the right place, combined with patience, could suffice to slay it.

But as the creature approaches to drink, a sinuous movement in the water portends a flash of scales and teeth. Reptilian jaws snap shut on one of the buffalo's legs, and the crocodile, which you can now partially see, attempts to roll its body and shake the animal or tear its leg off.

Not so easily taken, the buffalo lowers its head and gores at the crocodile, and there's a moment of confusion as teeth bite, bodies grapple and horns stab. When it's done, the crocodile sinks beneath the surface, and the buffalo runs away, wounded, but still with all four of its limbs.

Glancing at the river, you can just see the shape of the lurking crocodile, its lidded eyes appearing like innocuous bits of flotsam on the surface. Your spiritual senses scan it - no great power, but still, a dangerous predator.

This is a prize worth taking.

What do you do?

try to hunt smart. The crocodile can sink into the river if we fail to kill it in one or two shots. And we are yet no brawler to dare and try to fight it hand to hand.

Nice. It's quite tempting to get it to the next level before going after the demon hand.

Ranged is now 6d10 (phys prowess 3, ranged combat 1, icy amulet 1 and tech). And we get to shoot twice before it enters close combat range?
close combat is 4d10
phys defense is 3d10 + 1 autosuccess per roll due to armor, I guess that's nearly the equivalent of 2 extra dice?
spiritual defense is 2d10

Checking the Demon Hand:
9d10 for defense
5d10 spiritual attack
7d10 phys attack

Yeah we're still a bit behind. Need to get some back up and amending first sentence to that we should definitely get the Qi tech to next level.

Your eyes linger on the crocodile as the Buffalo continues to flee. It's a beast you've never encountered before in the frozen lands that make your home. Hardy scales line its side, ruptured by a horn which had gored through it in their prior struggle. You can see a trickle of blood leaking out of the wound when the crocodile surfaces, before washing away as it dips back beneath the muddied water. Your hands inch towards the bow on your back, the technique you've been practicing itching for a target.

But no.

It would be far too easy for the beast to slink beneath the waters at the first sign of trouble. While you are a strong swimmer, you don't fancy your chances against a predator made for the water. Instead, you swivel your head in the direction the buffalo took off and run, feet pounding through the grass as you try to catch up with the beast before it escapes you entirely. If you are lucky, perhaps other predators might join the hunt and you can earn greater spoils than you expected for the day.

You have to find the beast before they do though.

You can see tracks of blood, glazed over the reeds and grass you traverse. In the distance you can see the Buffalo, ungainly yes, but powering through despite its infirmity. The gap between the two of you something that only grows as it enters a forest and disappears among the trees.

You follow anyway, entering parts of the sect unknown to you. Silence rules over the forest. The sounds of the buffalo having long faded as you enter the woods. As you step inside you can feel the faint stirrings of Qi, wafting through your senses. Along the forest floor a trail of mushrooms, some of which have the buffalo's blood on them, lead you deeper. You brush past branches that break easily as you touch them, dropping to the forest floor and exploding into splinters so small they may as well not exist. Your boots brush against mushrooms that spread clouds of spores into the air as disturb them. The shadows deepen. You make sure to peer down, to follow the trail precisely.

Until there's no trail left.

You look around the forest floor, but the Buffalo's tracks have vanished, the great beast almost swallowed up by the forest.

You extend your senses. Something here feels dark, oppressive, lurking. It's not a creature, though. It's the forest itself.

You feel something brush against your spirit, almost as if the forest is watching you back. A shiver runs through your spine.

You turn back and head home.

By the time you make it back to the town the sun has started to crest, the world painted in a sea of warm orange light. As you pass through the gates you see Chanying sitting on top of a wall, legs swinging through the air before she takes notice of you and offers a cheery wave.

"Was hoping you'd get back in soon!" She shouts before dropping to the ground and pulling a scroll out from behind her. "I've got something for you."

She makes her way over, scrunching her nose as she gets into your general vicinity before she hands over the scroll.

"You didn't tell me you'd met Captain Yang." She says as you take it in one hand.

You're honestly not sure if you have but a glance at the wax seal that decorates the scroll, two marlins on opposing sides, their spear-like snouts criss-crossed. It's a seal you've seen before, draped on the flags of the ship that brought you here. You remember the scent of the sea, blistered palms and burning sting of sunburn as you helped battle the elements to make it here safely. You can hear his boisterous voice, roaring instructions, grey beard dripping with the ocean.

"I didn't know he had anything to do with the sect." You tell her as you rip off the wax seal.

Lind,

My men and I have made port for the week while we load the next shipment. I trust you've been using your time in the sect wisely, but if you wish to see more of the world outside the sect, you're welcome to serve under me again. We'll be at the docks, venturing out into the seas surrounding the sect from time to time. Should you venture out with us I'll endeavour to bring you back to the sect safe and sound and make it worth your while.

Captain Yang

"He's a former member, you know?" She tells you and you jump at the sound coming from behind you, to find that she's been peering over your shoulder to read it as well. "Came in from the desert and left sailing the world, the merchants talked about it when he made port."

"Anyway." She says, as she grabs the seal from your hand and folds it into her robes. "I was asked to deliver it, and now my work for the day is done. I'll see you around, Lind Tallak."

You watch her go, looking at the scroll in your hand before turning in the direction of the docks. You can't see them from here, but you wonder what opportunities could be out at sea. As the world begins to dim you realise it's been almost a week since you arrived at the sect.

You feel different.

Uncovering the secrets of the world, and the secrets of your own body and soul are tiring work. You take a seat on the same patch of wall Chanying had been sitting on and breathe. Watching as the sun sets over the horizon until that warm, orange glow disappears completely, swapped for the calming blue of the moon as it becomes brighter. You can feel aches in your body you didn't know you'd had, bruises still linger from the hand. Your exertions in chasing Consecration and hunting today have left you sore. Your shoulders burn from the weight of the pack that has sat upon your shoulders for the past few days.

Tomorrow, you will rest.

After that, you'll keep going.

Hopefully, it's enough.

Four Hour Moratorium on Voting, any votes in this time will not be counted.

Choose from three of the following actions – You have Three Weeks Left to prove yourself at the Golden Reeds.

Note: Votes in Plan Format

Training Actions

[] The seniors are still offering introductory lessons, the cultivator is always happy to take on new recruits. Go with him and explore the art of cycling Qi, and growing your spiritual capabilities. Now that you have chosen another style in place of the sect you are still welcome to come and cycle the ambient Qi, but you will receive no instruction.

-[] List what you will cycle into (Stage, Technique etc)

[] Jin Jiayi told you to come back whenever you wished for more lessons in the art of combat, go test yourself in the ring against your fellows. (Random Encounters, Train in the Valiant Champion Style)

[] There are always jobs in the town seek out employment and grow your skills… and your wallet. (Potentially develop skills, monetary reward, ???)

-[] Meet with the seamstress. Sewing requires diligence, patience and a steady hand, qualities you have in abundance.

-[] The butcher is looking for someone with a strong hand to cut spirit meat.

-[] The local crafter needs some small tasks done. Who knows what you might pick up?

-[] The innkeeper of the Dragon's Wing was happy with your impromptu efforts last night, Zhen's willing to let you work under him again.

[] The guards have a shooting range for Archery, work to develop your skills in preparation for future hunts.

[] You already have some skill in the art of cultivation, and you're recently found a Qi spot, go forth and cycle.

-[] Write in where and what you are cycling towards.

Social Actions

[] Bai Ping has disappeared from the tavern lately, seen only in brief glimpses in the crowds that line up for cultivation before he disappears once again. Ask after your fellow initiate.

[] Vijaya Paranthapa is currently without the small group of followers she's claimed since your encounter. Today she's been in conversation with a sect member and is currently gathering supplies from a list you see her carefully reading around the marketplace. Maybe she needs assistance?

[] Lord Li Jiang, is always accompanied, although lately you can see that Qing Liao, the woman who suggested you introduce yourself too him has been shunned to the outskirts of his circle.

-[] Introduce yourself to Li Jiang,

-[] Qing Liao has recently taken to working for the local crafter, catch her after a shift.

[] Wu Chanying has perhaps taken on more than she can chew with her latest endeavour, seen with a cart the size of a small house and no one to lend her a hand. What is she doing?

[] You and Liu Zhiquaing live under the same roof but you have yet to properly make the acquaintance of your fellow initiate. Spending most of his time in the forests within the sect, perhaps you should join him for a day?

[] The Ghost has been seen around the sect and village, though most tend to keep a wide berth to him. Perhaps once you finish what you started, he might lend you his ear?

[] Surely there are others in the sect that you could make the acquaintance of, take a walk and see who you find. Or, who finds you. (???)

Personal Actions

[] A few nights ago you chased after something and were it not for Bai Ping it could well have ended your life. The sect has deemed it a matter below the concerns of the sect, but it could come back to wreak havoc on the town. Find it.

-[] Bai Ping did seem to have experience in this field, and no love of demons either. Maybe he'll be willing to lend a hand.

[] The markets are home to a great range of things from weapons, charms and from what you've heard even Qi techniques. Go and peruse the market to see what you can find.

[] Go and see what the sect has for you, explore to your hearts content (D100)

[] You are a hunter, above all else. Go and search for some quarry.

-[] Search the surrounding forests (D8) - Low chance of spirit aspected beasts,

-[] Search the Mudpots,

[] Back in the port city there is always work for skilled labourers and you often see some of your fellow initiates, leaving for the day to complete tasks, you could find work at the docks.

[] The Immortal Kitchens are home to meals of all manner. If you can afford them of course. (Immortal meals are worth 5 Silvers. This cost can be offset by bringing your own game.)

[] Write-In

Special Event

[] Captain Yang has invited you back aboard his ship to sail the seas outside the sect while the port readies his supplies. All Three Actions will be used on this encounter – Rewards (???) – Available for two plans.

Special Events will crop up every so often, village festivals, visits from family etc; You could make an acquaintance that only pops up every few weeks etc; In those instances, they'll pop up in Special Event plans

Four Hour Moratorium

i'm thinking either

take the easy level two for our archer tech, do a social and hunt the demon hand. then go sailing next plan vote.

take two combat lessons which should be about what we need for another level up in that, hunt the demon hand. Then go sailing next plan vote.

those are my preferences. open to ideas tho.

rip that tracking roll tho. think we were favored for that.

I think we still need quite a bit more practise before we can take out the Hand. So I'd be interested in doing the combat training action.
Social with Bai Ping, as I think we'll need his help against the Hand, or at least some good tips.
Maybe worth going for the next level in Coursing River Arrow.

Fighting Styles:
Valiant Champion Style Level 1: +1 Unarmed Damage, +1 Unarmed Combat (Incorporated)
Lvl 2: 1/15

Cultivation
Consecration Stage:
Mid: 8/30

Techniques
Coursing River Arrow:
lvl 2: 15/20

our current progress on stuff.

We can get lvl 2 coursing river with one action.

valiant champion in two if we roll like we did last time with teacher assistance.

using the mud pots we can also get to mid in about two actions.

___

Demon hand speed run plan: 1 arrow training this turn. two fighting style trainings to get both of those to level 2.

next planning session we double cultivate to hit mid consecration and then hunt the hand for our third action with bai ping.

__

However i don't think we need to go that breakneck on hunting the hand. I really wanna go sailing so i'd personally like to do:

2 fight training, 1 arrow training this plan.

sailing next plan since it'll still be there.

then double cultivate and hunt the hand on the third turn when we come back.

__

for those who don't wanna go sailing and also want to actually have a social life i reccomend

2 fight training, one social this plan.

double cultivate next plan, one social/hunt next plan

arrow training, social, demon hand hunt on the third plan.

_

Though i'm not certain how wise it is to do all our cultivating at the mudpots. kind of want to find other locations.

what are yalls thoughts?
