"Beware. Your legacy is our future."

120 years ago, those words marked the end of the Aberrant War and the splintering of humanity between the baselines and their superhuman brethren.

Now, humanity flings itself into the void and finds the galaxy populated and controlled by countless species - species that see our castoffs as humanity's ambassadors. With the First Contact War only recent history, the newly formed System Alliance seeks to sooth relations between humanity and the Citadel Council by inducting the finest of their armed services into the Citadel Council's Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Office.

You are Commander Shepard, the first candidate.

Will you prove humanity is better than their worst mistakes? Or will the galaxy learn to see humanity only as dangerous aberrations to be put down...

***
Welcome to AEON EFFECT - a crossover between Aeon (the sci-fi sequel to white wolf's superhero RPG, Aberrant) and Mass Effect (you know what mass effect is, fuck off.) In Aeon, humanity is protected from the mutant descendants of 21st century superheroes run amok by psychically active agents known as Psions. But what if, rather than the mostly empty galaxy of Aeon, the humanity of the 22nd century found that the Aberrants they cast off their planet in 2064 instead blundered directly into the Turian Hegemony?

Well, we're going to find out!

1) write ins are allowed
2) SEX SCENES MAY HAPPEN! They will be SPOILED!
3) Familiarity with the Aeon 2nd edition ruleset isn't required, but may be helpful.

Here we go!

Converted eyes can see in low light without penalty, can speak underwater with high frequency emissions, can endure -20 C without discomfort, can breathe water as well as air, gains 1 level of Soft Armor, moves at Speed Scale 2 while in the water, has sonar out to "far" range. DRAWBACKS: Requires x3 water per day to survive, suffers +2 complication with social checks with people who are disturbed by hot, muscular shark girls (racists, bigots, and general dickheads who you don't wanna be friends with anyway.)
**
Ms. Fix It
Can add a second skill to repair and reverse engineering rolls as Enhancement, if it is related to the device in question (I.E, using Pilot to augment a Tech check to repair a VARG.)
**
Striking
She's hot! ...very hot. +2e to all social checks.
**
Favored Mode
She gains +2e to all Transmog rolls, enhancing her ability to transform her body into anything she wills. This can be added as successes to rolls, or can be used to increase her Psi stat for the purposes of range, radius, and duration.
**
Enhanced Tolerance
She is exceptionally good at attuning to psi-active biological technology. She adds +2 to her Tolerance limit.

PROLOGUE: Choosing the Candidate
Pronouns
He/Him
Captain David Anderson watched the globe of Earth slowly spin beneath him. The Wycoff Blight Zone was visible through the cloud layer - despite the best efforts of both Orgotek and Edenites, the zone was a clear scar on the center of North America, surrounded by the glittering lights of megacities. He tried to imagine what it must be like to be a Turian, to have three whole planets that were all one, big, unstoppable Blight Zone...and found he couldn't. Anderson was career military, he'd gone from the slums of the FSA east coast to the United Nations Navy. He'd been there, in France, when the Esperanza had been dragged out of orbit and smashed into France, and provided orbital support from the bridge of his frigate. He'd been in orbit around Shanxi when they had needed to fall back, their ships dragged home by the quick action of the Upeo wa Macho teleporters before the unknown aliens had arrived to blow them out of the sky. He could remember the panicky fear, the thought that the Aberrants had gotten allies.

Or, worse...

They had built the fleet.

He shook his head as, behind him, Chancellor Udina scrolled through the files, shaking his head. "No," he said, quietly. "No, this is unacceptable, Larsson. We need-"

"She's the best we have," General Larsson said, from her seat. The Legionary general was dressed in the simple uniform she preferred - simple blue and white, enough to almost make you forget she could tear this entire space station apart with her mind.

"We need a normal operative," Udina said. "Shepard is a psion. These people have been fighting our castoff freaks for a hundred years, longer than we have. We should find a skilled neutral. Fuck, steal one of those augments from Nippon for all I care."

Larsson frowned. Anderson, as the UNN's representative here, figured he should mediate before things got awkward. "Udina," he said. "If the Citadel Council can't tell the difference between a decorated psion and an Aberrant, then I'm not entirely sure anything we can do can matter. Larrson is right. Shepard is perfect."

"Perfect?" Udina asked.

Choose One
[ ] "She's practically a fascist. She joined the Federated State's military when she was sixteen - lied on her documentations to get out of those slums. The fact she turned-coat the instant she was within five kilometers of the 5th Legion's base camp in north America is irrelevant. You can't trust Americans. Never can." (City Rat Origin - sneaky, talky, former would be revolutionary against a fascist government who faked joining the military to get out of the slums and joined the good guys as soon as possible)
[ ] "She's a dyed in the wool Aberrant cultist, for god's sake. She was born on Eden, a planet run by Aberrants - and no, I don't care how sane they act around us, I don't trust a one of them. Officer exchange program? Bah! The whole planet should have been glassed to the mantle the instant the ISRA found the coordinates." (Edenite Origin - raised on a world colonized by superheroes who left before the majority of their kind went insane. Lived in post-scarcity luxury space communism provided by spandex clad gods for your entire life)
[ ] "She's an Oceanic. We should be sending human beings to the Citadel Council, not fish people!" (Oceania origin - newest member of the United Nations and thus, the System Alliance, populated by humans who have been augmented to be fully aquatic. Shark gills and teeth!)
Larsson and Anderson had the same glares, but Udina ignored them, scrolling through Shepard's records. Anderson, knowing he couldn't deck this beuracratic asshole in the jaw as badly as he wanted to, cut in. "Listen, Udina..."

Choose One
[ ] "She fought on Khantz Lu Ge, in the VARGs. Do you know how many VARG pilots survived that campaign?" (VARG pilot career - what's a VARG? A biomorphic bipedal armored walking vehicle armed with railguns and missiles! Why that sounds like a mech. It's a mech! VARGs are the Aeon version of mechs!)
[ ] "She served with distinction in the Battle of Eden. Without her, we'd have lost the UNSd Denali with all hands when the Colony hit her with his damn spore-soldiers. She saved almost two thousand sailors that day, and that was before her talents were triggered." (UNN Commander career - you know spaceships and can command spaceships. Spaceships!)
[ ] "She took down the Batarian slaver citadel on Torfin with a single fireteam and an artillery shell, and got ninety percent of the hostages out - human, alien, even the poor nova bastard they were rendering for parts. We've never seen a better marine." (UNMC career - badass ground combatant)

Udina looked irate and waved his hand in the air. "Oh...fine. We aren't exactly swimming in options..." He sighed. "But..."

Choose One
[ ] "Will the Specters take a former Legionary?" (Legion membership. The Legion are the psi-active armies of the United Nations and, now, the System Alliance. Despite being only 30,000 active members strong, the Legion is widely agreed upon to be the most potent fielded by the human species. This is because 1/3rd of them are telekinetics that can make tanks explode with their fucking brains.)
[ ] "Will the Specters take a member of the Miranda Project? Don't look at me like that Larsson, I'm not an idiot." (Project Miranda membership. Top secret branch of the Aeon Trinity, a United Nations (now System Alliance) backed private organization with the goal of humanitarian projects and unified responses to existential threat. Project Miranda agents are to the System Alliance as Special Task Groups are to the Citadel Council: Fearless, hand selected, top secret.)
[ ] "Will the Specters take a bloody freelancer?" (Freelance Psion membership. You were in militaries before. Decided to leave, and now, you're on your own. Until, of course...they dragged you back in.)
Anderson and Larsson exchanged a glance. The blond woman arched an eyebrow. Anderson inclined his head. They both looked back at Udina, and Anderson felt a faint smile grow on his features as he saw the administrative official start to settle into his chair, rolling a stylus between his fingers.

"Commander Shepard is the best chance we have at getting an in with the Specters. The galaxy? They adore Specters." Anderson crossed his arms over his chest. "The first human Specter will do more to reverse the past century of aberrant activity than anything else we can do, and if you want the best of the best, the most qualified person humanity can offer?" He inclined his head. "Shepard is the one to choose."

Larsson nodded.

Udina pursed his lips.

"...I'll make the call."

Fish girl mercenary mech pilot... how often do we end up with those words in the same sentence?

Can I get a run down on Oceanics, Aberrants, and Americans=evil? Both abilities, maluses, and physical differences?

Can I get a run down on Oceanics, Aberrants, and Americans=evil? Both abilities, maluses, and physical differences?

Sure!

oceanics are modded humans - most people are fine with them, Udina is just a dick. They have gills, look sexy, can live in and out of water.

Aberrants are novas (humans with the ability to manipulate quantum effects to produce superhuman powers) that have been driven mad by their powers and mutations. They range from merely extremely dangerous to preposterously dangerous.

The Federated States of America is the United States of America, but, like, two years from now.

EDIT: Oh, and to be clear, your affiliation (legion, miranda, freelancer) won't denote your psychic talent (I.E, it won't determine if you're a biokinetic, teleporter, clairsentient, telepath, whatever)

That's the next vote!

Not entirely sure what's happening, but that hasn't stopped me before!

Not sure on the latter option, but aiming for Oceanic and Mecha.

Ok how mad is mad here, because if novas are crazy for hating terrans I'm not sure we can trust the terrans, I mean I hate Terrans.

She better have Shark skin too

Because I am going to insist that Oceanics that weren't VARG pilots called VARGs "Aquariums." Cannot decide if we should take a groundpounder and make them more scary or do another Master And Commander With Psychics quest.

Legionary fits a USMC Marine like a glove. Miranda Project secret operative fits the UNN Commander. Simple.

Ok how mad is mad here, because if novas are crazy for hating terrans I'm not sure we can trust the terrans, I mean I hate Terrans.

It's a mix!

Some novas went mad as in "dangerously unstable" in either the mental ("I will conquer the whole world!") or physical ("oops, my power caused a tsunami that killed 12 million people on the American east coast, sorry...") and some just left because public sentiment had turned against them in general...

The way to think of the Aberrant War was less "humans versus novas" and more "superheroes fight supervillains with realistic levels of collateral damage for 10 years until humanity gets sick of their shit."

Cause, like, if New York got leveled the number of times it gets leveled in comics, with realistic casualty figures? Or if a Metropolis from Man of Steel happened every other week? Yeah, people get get A BIT SICK OF IT.

There are non-evil novas who are aligned with baseline humanity - Eden, the world mentioned above - is the reason why the United Nations has gone from the United Nations to the System Alliance. It's an alliance between two systems, SOL and Eden, because us human adjacent folks need to stick together.

Maximum badassery.

I doubt SS allow sex scenes, even if in spoilers, you may need to go to QQ for that.
So, uh...not to sound like a dick, but...are you new here?
Don't worry about it, this comes up at some point in every DragonCobolt quest. We have checked the rules thoroughly, checked with moderators, and site admin, and how DC handles adult material in his quests is within the TOS and rules of the site. There is nothing to debate or question about it at this point.

EDIT: Oh, and to be clear, your affiliation (legion, miranda, freelancer) won't denote your psychic talent (I.E, it won't determine if you're a biokinetic, teleporter, clairsentient, telepath, whatever)
Cool. What about the N7 training? I know the 1 option you offer is specifically for being a boss in ground combat and I feel weird not picking that since that is supposed to be Shepard's signature ability. Like Taylor Hebert being highly Intelligent with Wisdom the dump stat in a D&D Quest.

[X] "She's an Oceanic. We should be sending human beings to the Citadel Council, not fish people!" (Oceania origin - newest member of the United Nations and thus, the System Alliance, populated by humans who have been augmented to be fully aquatic. Shark gills and teeth!)

Mass Effect needs more Mecha fights. Proper ones.
[X] "She fought on Khantz Lu Ge, in the VARGs. Do you know how many VARG pilots survived that campaign?" (VARG pilot career - what's a VARG? Aaaahhhhh... I am guessing this one gives us alotta contacts with mercs black market sort of people?

Edit: I ask because this is the least clear on what it gives.

What does Oceanic give us besides a beautiful body and water swimming\breathing? I wanna go for it because it'd be very different. But there wasn't alot of underwater stuff in ME.

The unlikely commander, from the gutters to the stars. She can kill you with her brain, the fleet at her command, or her harem of dangerous persons.

Oh, don't worry, no matter what background you pick, you're going to be very, very, very good at killing people. May be using your fists. Maybe using a PSYCHIC SWORD. Maybe using electromagnetic powers! Who knows!

The main difference between the three is that one gives you mechas, one makes you a bit better at space combat, and one makes you a bit better at ground combat - then I'll just tailor the quest so you're good at whatcha want!

What does Oceanic give us besides a beautiful body and water swimming\breathing? I wanna go for it because it'd be very different. But there wasn't alot of underwater stuff in ME.

Well, your skin's tougher, making you harder to damage, you've got more resistance to cold and pressure, can withstand a vacuum better due to that tougher skin...also, like, I can add more underwater stuff! It's not hard!

Wait, what's different between psions and Novas?

Novas emerge randomly from the population. Psions are created via activating latent psychic abilities using a piece of technology called a Prometheus Chamber, and also, they use the noetic field rather than quantum fuckery.

Psions are generally weaker, but can combine their powers for additional effects! Novas are stronger but more iconoclastic.

If you've ever played Exalted, it's like the difference between Solars and Dragon Blooded.

...but in spaaaaaaaaaaaace!

I am going with ranks exploding because [OBVIOUS]. BUT ALSO! Because at some point Liars is gonna threaten somebody to flay them with her mind. And Shepherd is gonna snort "Amateur".
[X] "Will the Specters take a former Legionary?" (Legion membership.

A biomorphic bipedal armored walking vehicle armed with railguns and missiles! Why that sounds like a mech. It's a mech! VARGs are the Aeon version of mechs!)

And here I was hoping for an Aeon Flux crossover. Ah well...

Fun fact!

In the 1990s, the game line went Adventure (the game set in the 1920s), then Aberrant (the game set in the THEN FUTURE YEAR of 2009) and then...Trinity, the game set in 2120. Trinity was originally going to be named Aeon, to keep with the "A" theme.

...guess who sued them.

Yup! It was Aeon Flux!

[x] "She's a dyed in the wool Aberrant cultist, for god's sake.

Because Fuck Udina, and not in the fun way.
Also because the fashion scene on Eden sounds amazing.

Because I have a type.
Also because I want to paint the Mech red and then make it go faster purely for the meme.

[X] "Will the Specters take a member of the Miranda Project? Don't look at me like that Larsson, I'm not an idiot." (Project Miranda membership. Top secret branch of the Aeon Trinity, a United Nations (now System Alliance) backed private organization with the goal of humanitarian projects and unified responses to existential threat. Project Miranda agents are to the System Alliance as Special Task Groups are to the Citadel Council: Fearless, hand selected, top secret.)

Because I really want to give Udina an aneurysm.
Also I don't want to be entirely reliant on other people for the spygames.

As someone who is in fact familiar with the Trinity Continuum, I am extremely hyped for this quest.
