Sign me up for a roll system, although you might have to explain what Resolve and Focus are, and what kind of challenge might be tailored to each. Come to think of it, what kind of rolls could be tied to the Physical stat, or Agility? DGR is a thinking game, not an action one.

Focus is basically Perception, it's just that's what Danganronpa calls it. Resolve (or Fortitude in the original Talent Development mini-game) is Mental Endurance/Willpower, so it's everything related to keeping morale, not the easiest thing to do in a Killing Game.

Physical comes into play when trying to survive a murder attempt, or even attempting a murder. Agility is for reaction time, like correcting an argument as its being made, for fleeing and disposing of evidence fast enough if you're a murderer, escaping fast enough if you're a would-be victim, or getting to a murder scene on time.

What I've been getting from these responses is that rolls, if they are to be included, could work as a supplement to the gameplay loop, er, 'Questing loop', but shouldn't be the norm

Edit: Also, for Nat20s I had an idea in mind that rolling would stock up one 'Auto-win' that could be used on any later roll, figured that'd help ease tensions and do something different with them rather than the usual 'miracle win'

So Jeanne and the Victorian Phone were voted most for overall, if not always in the one place. As for radio stations, rather than the usual die roll tiebreak, I figured since it's an optional vote I could just have Tsubasa flip through both next post

I tried fiddling with this 'Birdbook' to see if I could get any other stations on it besides Columbird's Occupation Radio. I didn't expect much, with how far we likely were underground, but to my surprise I managed to pick up something.

"Ah, hello there everyone! This is Sakakibara Momoka, with the very first broadcast of the Eleventh Hour program right here in Hope's Peak!" came Momoka's voice. She was speaking much more naturally than she did in person, I guess due to her being back in her environment, "Teehee, we're still setting up here, but if you're ever interested in being a guest on the show, feel free to come on over! For now though, I've been lucky enough to scrape up some records from the general store. Okay, you should all know this one, let's give it a spin!"

Bad as things were, it was good to see someone trying to keep spirits up. I got to wondering if Momoka was just broadcasting from her dorm, or if she'd found her Ultimate Lab? Guess it would help then if her station accepted call-in questions.

Unless Columbird had overlooked the details that much though, I doubted we'd be able to use radios to contact the world above, he wouldn't have let anyone have them if we could.

As for the offer to come on Momoka's show, eh, I was tempted, as a way of getting to know her. It's just... talking about everything I did in the air force made me uncomfortable even thinking about it, and that's even if I was legally allowed to discuss all that in the first place.
Maybe I could bring up that one time I broke the sound barrier though, that could be fun? Think I was the first person ever to do so, although I had heard conflicting claims, and yeah, you could argue that was more due to the aircraft than me.

Moving on, out of all the items on sale, the one that stood out to me was an old phone that I assumed was from the last century. Other than maybe for antique hobbyists, I couldn't work out why Hope's Peak would stock something like this. Pondering who'd be interested in such a thing, my first thought was Yoritsune just from the 'old connection, but how sound travel made me think again of Momoka. Genpachi would probably have something to say about it, it was like he had something to say on everything.

Oh wait, Jeanne right? I figured resistance networks would make use of outdated technologies to not be tracked. I did know one or two things about them... given a person I knew was involved in going undercover to break them up. Er, definitely shouldn't bring that up to Jeanne.

Taking the phone, I gasped and jumped back when a cut-out snake animatronic, if snakes had moustaches and top hats anyway, suddenly sprang up out of nowhere and said to me, "Fine choice you've made there, sire, I do say I do say. That'll be 5 Birdbucks, ya got that?" His voice had an almost pre-recorded tone to it, so I couldn't tell if he was an independent being like Columbird or just a stand-in.
Inserting the coins into a slot on the counter, I slowly stepped out, ever conscious and cautious of a row of different types of guns all lined up along the ceiling, presumably to deter any shoplifters. Birdcoin! x1

With this old phone on me, my first instinct was to look for Jeanne to see what she'd make of this phone. Fortunately it didn't take long to find her, but unfortunately that was because, the loud clashing of metal alerting me, she had already gotten into a swordfight with Kagura in the cave outside.

The shrine maiden screamed with might as she lifted her nodachi straight up and swung right down, but while her sword had more force behind it, it needed that force to even be swung after all, Jeanne wielding a lighter, thinner blade meant she had fleetness of foot on her side. The French fighter darted back before the nodachi could come down, then sprang to the side to try and flank Kagura, the miko having to hold her blade like a crowbar-shield to block an incoming jab.

"Wait, stop!" I cried out, running right into the middle before I could even think anything through. Had that gone any worse I could've been skewered, instead... I got firmly slapped across the face as Jeanne glared down at me.

"What le Hell were you thinking, was it not obvious we were only practicing? Mon Dieu, Pilot, were you trying to get me taken to Trial?!" She burst out at me, hands on her hips.

Hearing her words, I buried my head in my hands. "I was just, just afraid the killing had already started. Argh, I'm an idiot, I should've known you were only sparring..." I mumbled.

"Indeed," I heard Yoritsune then say, them emerging out of the shadows to speak, "I was acting as referee, why else dost thou think I didn't intervene?".

"So anyway, can we get back to the match now? I was totally just about to beat your arse, Jeanne!" Kagura exclaimed as she gave a fanged grin.

"You know what? No, I've decided I'm not in le mood for it anymore," Jeanne said with folded arms before she then picked me up by my collar, "My natural flow has been entirely thrown off, all due to a certain someone, no?"

"Oh boo. Well, guess I'll just go and bug Omura then or somethin'" Kagura sighed as, heaving her sword, she started walking away.

"I should depart too, it wouldst appear the mood has been fouled somewhat," Yoritsune said, as he bowed to both of us before leaving.

Jeanne still looked at me with her arms crossed, but then she said, "I admit, were I in your place, seeing people fight without knowing the cause, I'd... probably do somezing as reckless as zat myself. There, I am not so high and mighty".

"Really, I'm the one who should've been thinking, especially in a case like this," I muttered, grateful at least that nobody had said anything like 'reckless as expected of a kamikaze pilot'. But it was then I remembered, "Oh right, I got distracted enough that I nearly forget to give you this". I then pulled out the old, unattached phone and presented it to Jeanne.

"Oh my, zis is... quite somezing, is it not?" Jeanne said as her face, while not entirely lightening, at least perked up a little as she took a closer look, "Ah, I believe I had heard of le gift-giving traditions of your country. Er, I believe I am supposed to refuse it twice before I receive, zat is how zis goes, no?".

"Well... if you want I guess. Or you could just take it, I'm okay with that" I said, shrugging.

With that go-ahead, Jeanne grinned and swiped up the Victorian telephone. She then had a closer look before asking, "Not zat I am complaining, but... a phone all ze way down here seems a strange choice for a gift, is it not?".

"Ah, I got the impression resistance fighters used obsolete tech like this to communicate while staying undetected. Er, did I get that right?" I told her.

Her right hand resting on her hip, head titled, she said, "It's not like I can just tell people trade secrets, no? I'll say we typically use ciphers, invisible ink, stuff along zose lines, Iwai's trade now zat I think about it. But hey, at least you are showing some forethought and deduction, are you not?" And, well, courtesy".

Her words did raise my smile a little, but then a thought came to me. "Even if we are classmates... I guess I'm still your enemy, aren't I?".

"In war you were, but in zis Killing Game, hmm, not really more so zan anyone else here" she did grin a little at me, I guess I was thankful.
"Zat said, I do wonder how I am supposed to put zis phone to any real use, without le slightest clue where any outlet or landline is around here" she did mutter, looking over the device.

"Ah, Momoka was able to get a radio signal set up here, like in her room or Lab or something. I'm sure there could be a way" I said, as i held up my Birdbook to let Jeanne listen in to the Eleventh Hour.

"What, radio broadcast? What good would zat do, other zan get intercepted by that bird? Plus, zere's only sixteen students here, so couldn't she just come up and talk to us, no?" Jeanne frowned.

"Well, I'm no psychologist, but I think it could be a comfort thing for her," was what I figured, "Establish a sense of normalcy and stuff. And hey, she did come here to practice her talent, after all".

"Hmm, I would still advise against it, but what do I know?" Jeanne sighed.

Fiddling around with the hand radio some more, I then discovered Momoka wasn't the only student here who'd set up their own broadcast.
"Alright, you're listening to Hope's Peak Pirate Radio," I could hear Genpachi's voice coming through, "Couldn't stand that caterwauling coming from any of our 'official' programs, so I kindly set this little broadcast of mine up so we all could hear some decent tunes from my extensive stash for a change, now ain't I such a nice fella? New and game-changing, folks, not stale and fossilised, ya dig?".

"Another radio program? My word, people are just tempting that featherbrain, no?" Jeanne had to fume.

[ ] Check up on Genpachi, what does he think he's doing?
[ ] Check up on Momoka, see where she's broadcasting from
[ ] Check up on Yudai, see if he's made any progress breaking out
[ ] Look for your Ultimate lab, if it's even on this floor
[ ] Return to your room, it's hard to tell wat time it is, so its nearing night for all you know
[ ] Get something else from the store (write-in item, same ones as last post)
[ ] Write-in

Ah, so the record was for Momoka to play during her broadcast. That actually makes a lot of sense in hindsight.

For the actual votes, I do want to check in on either of the two radio stations really, but I'd rather do so on more friendly terms than what Jeanne seems to have on her mind and I don't want to split up with her already. That leaves me with either checking on Yudai, or getting the search for our lab out of the way. Actually, Jeanne has been pretty upstanding so far (as well as ballsy with going for the duel practice given the situation), so we might as well build on that budding not-enemyship by opening the door to our lab to her. That strikes me as a decent gesture.

Taking the phone, I gasped and jumped back when a cut-out snake animatronic, if snakes had moustaches and top hats anyway, suddenly sprang up out of nowhere and said to me[,] "Fine choice you've made there, sire, [I] do say I do say. Missing capitalisations on "I"s, and missing commas.
There is some weird stuff going on with punctuating direct speech, with half the commas separating the speech and narration missing, or some extra dots after the speech ended with a question/explanation mark. I probably won't be pointing these out; they are mildly distracting at worst.
"So anyway, can we get back to the match now? I was totally just about to beat your arse, Jeanne!" Kagura exclaimed as she gave a fanged grin.
Okay; between Jeanne and Kagura, my choice is clear: Ultimate Miko all the way. Competent swordfighting, boisterous temperament, and more spirited than the entire French Resistance. I officially like her and hope she survives until later games.
I figured resistance networks would make use of outdated technologies to not be tracked.
Why would an older phone be harder to track than a new one? They make use of the exact same outlet.
"What, radio broadcast? What good would zat do, other zan get intercepted by that bird? Plus, zere's only sixteen students here, so couldn't she just come up and talk to us, no?" Jeanne frowned.
Would she bring her gramophone down and play music at us too? There is a point to doing things on your own frequency without interruptions or the pressure of live conversation where someone with a stronger personality could talk over you. The host is always in control of their show. It's meditative, like writing a diary or a blog, a way to unwind and put your thoughts in order.

Besides, who cares if we get intercepted? The bird was the one who authorized the use of our Labs in the first place.

[x] Check up on Momoka, see where she's broadcasting from
[x] Go by yourself

Let's look at the local radio station. We might want to learn how to operate it in case we need to make an anouncement and Momoka isn't around. Plus, she invited anyone willing to visit. Best to do it alone though; she looks like she shies away from big groups.

On an unrelated note... should we point out Birdcoins to collect them, or do we do so automatically?

Birdcoins do have to be pointed out manually to count, yeah

Anyway, I'm about to go off on my vacation, so while I'll still have my phone I'm not sure if I'll have access to a proper computer, or if I do for how long. I should be back in about five days

Chapter 1: Daily Life 3 (Simeon Lab)
[X] Look for your Ultimate lab, if it's even on this floor
[X] Invite Jeanne along

"Yet if Momoka's found her Lab, there could a chance ones for us are around here too," I was quick to observe. "Well, it's worth a look for them anyway, I don't know if we even have access to the whole school".

"Still, I see where you're coming from," Jeanne nodded then perked up, "Ah, no doubt mine will be packed to ze brim with escape ropes, sharpened rapiers, and explosives!" She had to grin and hold up her fists as she said that.

"Er, we'll see," I put on a smile as we headed off, then added, "I'll just be happy if my lab has an actual plane, even if it's just a Wright Brothers model. I mean, you know, if they gave Dejan a tank, then anything's possible I guess".

We'd already had somewhat of a decent look at the ground floor of the North building when we were looking for the Gym, so that left the South building to explore more fully. The North Building being where most of the actual classrooms were, the South building was reserved for dorms and other purposes, like that School Store I found. Getting a better look around (well, as much as was possible, given lighting that could charitably be called 'minimal'), we eventually found the other facilities there, including basics like restrooms, showers, and the other dorms, girls' and boys' on opposite sides of the building, but also a little café and even a cinema room.

The moment we approached the cinema's door, however, Columbird instantly popped up in the ticket booth and barked, "No ticket, no entry, no-one's weaseling in on my watch! Got that, sonny Jim?"

"Ah, w-we were just getting to know the layout of the dorms" I tried to tell him.

"Feh, don't play smart with me, I know just what young, disobedient whelps are like," Columbird grumbled before he flew up to me and perched down hard on my shoulder, his beak shoved right up near my face, "You are not here to slack off or go canoodling with some floozy, you are here to learn, private! Learn how to kill that is, as if I haven't drilled that into that thick skull of yours enough!" He pointed a talon right near my eye as he said that.

Jeanne tensed. I could see from the corner of my eye that she was about to reach for her sword, yet her shaking palm had frozen, as if she knew what could happen if she tried to oppose Columbird so directly. Hell, even I strained to resist my ingrained urge to say 'Sir! Yes Sir!' from my time in the draft.

Columbird finally flew off me before Jeanne and said, "Look, probably le only reason zey set up zis movie room was so zey could force us to watch propaganda, even before le Occupation. I doubt we are missing out on much," she shrugged.

"Propaganda?!" Columbird had to shout back, "This studio contains nothing but the most glorious displays of AMERICAN culture, missy! We got Cowboys and <American Indians>, we got the Antebellum South, we got our boys bombing Jerry, we got examples of American school life that'll show ya how a real Academy is run!".

"Like I said, propaganda" she said to me under her breath.

"Of course, had to throw out a whole bunch of <Japanese> crap to fit our stuff in. Some Peach Boy cartoon, your samurai hoo-hah, a weird-ass King Monke knockoff with slanted buildings," the bird kept rambling. Jeanne and I were at least able to slip away from Columbird as he kept talking.

Having covered all we could of the South building yet having found nothing of either of our labs, we did however spot what looked like a... Christian chapel, I think, perched out in the cave atop an upward slope.

As I still had Momoka's program tuned on, I heard her transmitted voce say "Ah, coming up, we were quite lucky that Omura Simeon, the Ultimate Miracle-Worker, agreed to an interview with us. But first, a little song to remind us of mountain views, er, assuming we're not inside one right now".

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOjsmhs7qik

It was... a little hard for me to process what Momoka had just said. "Huh, I thought Omura hated the radio?" I mumbled.

Jeanne wavered a little while, but then said, "He likes to preach, does he not? He might have realised it is a way to talk at all of us without having to wait till we are all in ze one room. Also, what does she mean by 'we' or 'us'? Is she not ze only one running her station?"

"Guess it's just radio norms" I figured. I hoped that's all it was, as my head felt a slight twinge.

"Ooh," Jeanne then paused to run up and inspect the chapel, "I take it zis is Simeon's Lab, no? If he is with Momoka, perhaps we will have zis place all to ourselves to inspect!".

"W-wait a sec, isn't that...?" I tried to say, but Jeanne had already shimmied her way up a nearby pillar, leapt off it, and had managed to get into the chapel through a window. the door locked, I had to do the same, if with far less acrobatic ability.

Dropping down into Simeon's church and clutching my ankle as I did so, I glanced around while I simultaneously tried to work out how I was going to get back out. I could see several stained glass windows depicting Simeon in a variety of situations, like, um, being tied up shot with arrows, being fed to a lion, or being stranded on top of a pillar. At least the last one wouldn't be immediately fatal in real life.

As for Jeanne, she'd gone up to the organ at the end of the room, I could tell she was tempted to give it a press yet was withholding herself from doing so. Huh, resisting temptation, Simeon should at least appreciate that.
Instead, she picked up what I assumed was a Bible and opened it to a bookmark Simeon had left. I walked up to it, only to find it was in a language I couldn't recognise at all.

"Latin, I guess," Jeanne muttered, "Has Vs instead of Us, so that narrows it down".

"Wow, Omura knows Latin?" I asked.

"Either zat or he is learning, it would be required for such a 'glorious' position as Pope," she snarled. She then eyed the book closer and read the page Simeon had marked, "'Liber Iob'? Huh, Book of Job I take it".

"Uh, not familiar with the tale, I'm sorry" I said to her.

"It would line up with everyzing else here: Suffer for God," she said, then sighed. "Ugh, have we all not had enough of suffering?".

"I guess I can get where he's coming from," I said, trying to meet Simeon halfway, "After the war, it's hard honestly to not get suffering off your mind. I mean, most of Japan's still in ruins".

"Zat would be normal, like France is in no good state either. And yet," Jeanne then reached down and opened what I'd thought was a donation box, to instead show a chest filled with...

"T-torture implements?" I gasped, seeing the flails, nails, and chains.

"Zis goes beyond merely wartime suffering. Our boy fancies himself a flagellant, no?" Jeanne said, yet changed her tune a little with, "Well, at least none of zese are killing implements, unless you get creative and whatnot. I believe each of us were given a killing weapon in our dorms by Columbird, were we not?".

"Wait, we were?" I gasped, having to take a step back, "I-I don't remember seeing one, I certainly would if I did."

"Hmm, zen again, some were pretty unorthodox. Dejan was given a spanner for example" she said.

"Wait, so then what was the tank?" I had to ask.

"No less zan a mobile Laboratory, I figure" she said.

I remember Dejan wasn't the only student to have a weapon on him, like I'd seen one or two katana, Yoritsune had loads of stuff on him, and you could argue Etsuko's tails or paws counted as 'natural' weapons.
"Huh, I feel bad for Manami, she could've gotten a whole ship to herself had they been so gracious" I remarked.

It was then however the songs on Momoka's station ended, and I could hear her say, "Hello and Good Day, Omura Simeon, Ultimate Miracle-worker. We are so grateful to have you with us! Hmm, would you be okay with elaborating on just what a 'miracle' is? It's not a familiar concept in Japan is all, we mostly assume a miracle means great luck".

Whew, good thing she didn't start off by asking about his aversion to the radio, that would've just started things on a sour note. Not that Simeon's response was that jovial. Birdcoin! x1
"Luck, I firmly believe, has nothing to do with it. I would even go as far to proclaim that 'luck' and 'coincidence' are imaginary concept, if not illusions that lead one away from God. Nothing that happens on Earth is by chance, but because God willed it to be. I can only hope to be as best a vessel of His will as I can," he spoke.

"Huh, by zat logic, can you not be only as good a vessel as He wills in ze first place?" Jeanne had to question.

"Ah, I see. How... fascinating," Momoka said in return, handling Simeon's words as gracefully as she could. Guess I would've just stared and blinked if I was in her situation.
"Oh, it appears we have a caller, the very first on our program!" she then exclaimed, as if she was smiling through the soundwaves. "Hello, you're on the Eleventh Hour."

"Yeah hi there, Sakamoto Genpachi, ya might've heard of me around here," came his voice, Genpachi being the last person I thought would call into Momoka's program. "Listen, I gotta ask our Mister Miracle here, what sorta crap are ya even spewing?".

I stood back and gritted my teeth on hearing that. Genpachi, no, please don't agitate the others, that's the last thing we need...

"The whole of God's truth, and nothing less" Simeon stated, at least keeping his composure.

"Listen, I got that part. But do ya think about what yer even saying? That worldview of yours means no free will, no choice. And hey, believe whatever ya like, that ain't my business," Genpachi said that, despite his whole reason for calling in, "But I gotta ask: Are ya honestly prepared to accept everything that worldview means? 'Cause I gotta tell ya, kid, it ain't pretty".

"Look, um, perhaps it would be better if you two talked this out in person?" Momoka interjected at what may've been the right time.

"Indeed," Simeon then said, that composure of his now showing cracks.

"Heh, great to hear that, yer place or mine?" Genpachi laughed, before he finished by addressing Momoka with, "Oh, just gotta say, your music bites. Then again, since you have Mr. 'No Free Will' on, only makes sense you don't know shit about the Jazz".

He hung up at just the right time. Momoka then resumed her talk with Simeon, while I turned to Jeanne and asked, "Okay, how we gonna get out of this Lab?"

"Allow me!" Jeanne then beamed as she grabbed that box of 'implements' and began dragging it over to that window.

"Wait, no! If we leave with that box over there, Omura will know someone's been in here" I gasped.

Jeanne then sighed, "You are right, much as it pains me to admit. Still, ah, look on le bright side! Zis it exciting, no? I have not had a real daring stealth mission... ever since I came here, really!" Her tone had picked up, even if in this case I wish it wouldn't have.

My instinct was to say something like Come on, this is serious, but Jeanne did have a bit of a point. We could use a look on the bright side, after the war and now... this Killing Game.
"Yeah, guess this must be what your life's like. It's..." I began, then breathed out, "It's certainly not boring, I'll say that".

"See? I knew you'd come around!" Jeanne kept on smiling. "Oh right, le escape..."

Jeanne's Trust +1!

[X] Hoist Jeanne up to the window, then have her pull you up

Might as well leave the way we've come and preferably without leaving any evidence. I suppose there's a risk of an athletics fail, but it certainly beats waiting for Simeon to show up. I think this little tour made it pretty clear that he's more into penance than forgiveness and knocking hin out might just be a tad too much excitement given the circumstances.

That being said, you have to appreciate a woman that knows the value of some good explosives. Not that I'd ever worry about it in a killing game, but I figure that things won't be boring with her around. Next time she might want to bring some of those escape ropes she suspects are in her lab though.

Oops, guess I kinda got mixed up as to whether the votes themselves are written in first or second person. I'll keep this one in second person since people have already voted, but in the future I'll remind myself to stick with first person for votes, makes more sense since the rest of the Quest is written that way Birdcoin! x1

Ah, I also forgot to add a vote for buying movie tickets in the future. Then again, they do cost more Birdcoin than usual (in return for a more guaranteed Trust Rank Up) to reflect how moviegoing is more of a 'special occasion' in Japan (likely even more so back then), so you'd probably want to save up

Speaking of Trust, Jeanne's didn't rank up from your gift alone, but also your choice to spend time with her beyond that

Good is the enemy of perfect. We don't need to commit a perfect crime, just one we wouldn't be caught for.
Hmm, that'd be a good motto for the Killing Game.

Also, collecting the coin.

If you're wondering what that whole 'King Monke knockoff' line was, that was a reference to the lost film The King Kong That Appeared In Edo. The name 'King Monke' is meant as one of those stand-in names Danganronpa uses, like 'Blue Ram'

Also, given the alligator brackets are meant to replace what characters are actually saying (usually what are nowadays slurs, or just plain were slurs even at the time) with modernised terms, you may be wondering why I used 'American Indians' once. That's because reportedly it's the term they prefer, when you have to use a general term anyway and not their specific group, since they feel 'Native Americans' is too broad

[x] Push the box over anyway. Even if Simeon figures out someone's been in here, he won't know it's you

On DR fan projects, I also wanted to highlight Despair Time, since it's made it to the end of the first Trial where it seriously stepped up its game, going from already pretty good to woah:

Chapter 1: Daily Life 4
[X] Hoist Jeanne up to the window, then have her pull you up

Oof, while Jeanne's frame may have looked light, she was surprisingly heavy to lift up. I could feel she'd built up a fair bit of muscle, which yeah, made sense for an Ultimate Resistance Fighter who could leap off cave pillars, but wasn't something I was at all used to women having. Then again, I wasn't anyone's male image really, so fair was fair.

This meant that, much as I struggled to heave her up to the window, she was able to then reach down and pull me up with little issue. Just in time too, as I could already hear footsteps outside and what sounded like speaking.

"Okay, lemme give to you straight. This here Killing Game, you'd also call it part of God's plan?" came Genpachi's voice, which I could only just pick up.

I looked down and to the side to see both Simeon and indeed Genpachi there, the former stuck for words till he answered, "If it is, that is because all is. The good, the bad, everything".

"Hah, so were those nukes a modern Egyptian plague or something? Hmm, bit below the belt of me, eh?" Genpachi kept on smirking, before he said, "Right, I'll get to the point. A whole bunch of us are all working to escape this Killing Game, but if the game's in your God's plan, that'd mean we're doing your Devil's work, ain't we kid?"

"We'll have to see," Simeon then said, "If our escape succeeds, then we will know it is because God ordained it".

Genpachi laughed, "Ever heard of Schrodinger's Cat, kid, or does modern science just repulse ya? 'Cause it sounds like none of us, not even some holy fink like you, can know if goddamn anything is part of the divine plan or not until it's over and done with. Which makes it real useless as a concept, don't it?"

Simeon was back to seething at him, "You would call the will of our Creator 'useless'?"

I gently nudged Jeanne and whispered to her, "That's our cue, let's sneak off while he's angry".

She nodded in response, before she leapt over and skidded down the pillar she'd used to enter the Church Lab. I was a little more hesitant to jump off, but Jeanne managed to catch me when I did so. Birdcoin! x1
However, we hadn't been quiet enough to not have Simeon and Genpachi look roughly in our direction for a second. Both of us froze up, keeping as silent as possible and desperate for them to look away.

Genpachi spoke next, as he shrugged and said to Simeon, "Well, not entirely useless. I could see how for some people, that line of thought would be awful convenient, don'tcha think? Invoke yer Creator, yer Absolute Authority, to justify anything ya feel like.
Personally though, if there is such a thing as the Divine, I sure as Hell don't see Him in law and order," he then said, adjusting his trilby, "No, kid, the only real beauty in this world comes from defying order, defying some greater will. It's in those bursts of agency and self-determination that let us know we're alive, not just some puppets strung along by government or society or traditions or what have you."

"Yes, you have made every opportunity to acquaint us with your Devil's music, I am well aware," Simeon snarled, his tone having simmered down to a hiss, before he muttered, "I can only see we're at an impasse".

"Heh, ya didn't have ta tell me," Genpachi said, "I'll leave ya with one last parting thought, kid. If God wants us to get outta this Killing Game, wouldn't a guy as powerful as him have already done so? Well, night-night".

Simeon gave no reply, but just stormed back into his Lab, that Lab we'd just barely made it out of.

"Sheesh, the nerve on that guy, I tell ya" Genpachi cackled to himself. Or not, as with Simeon gone, the Jazzman's gaze drifted to the side, "Okay you two kids, ya can quit playin' smart with me".
Wincing, Jeanne and I slowly stepped out of the shadows to face him. At least Genpachi didn't seem like he would just rat us out to Simeon.

"Ah, Genpachi, was that whole confrontation really necessary?" I had to ask.

"Yeah, we are all trying to get along now, you know, else a friggin' murder breaks out" Jeanne glared at him.

Genpachi shrugged then muttered, "Yeah, ain't nothing logical 'bout what I just did, but it ain't like I care. It's a matter of principle, sweet-cheeks, doll-face, I just can't stand types so shackled to some deterministic worldview like that. You two can at least agree we're nothing without our choices, eh Mademoiselle Revolution?" he said to Jeanne, before he looked at me, "Or especially you, kid, you were ordered to die yet sheer luck saved ya".

I didn't know how to respond to that, honestly I didn't want to respond to that, or even think about it. Jeanne however looked Genpachi square in the face and said, "And as 'Mademoiselle Revolution', I know better zan to start sowing division among ze ranks, and zat goes double over somezing so petty".

"Tch, hate to break it to ya, dame, but we weren't exactly brought here ta play 'Happy Families'," Genpachi said, tilting his hat down.

"There you are!" said another voice, as none other than Toranosuke approached the three of us, "Just who I was looking for. I promised to try and give everyone a normal school life, so I've set up a class for tomorrow, unaccustomed to teaching as I am. Our subject's General Knowledge, I felt it best to start with something broad before working our way up to specifics. Naturally I expect all sixteen of us to be there".

"What le-? Hey, we are in a Killing Game, you know! We hardly need schoolwork on top of that!" Jeanne said, her more reasoned tone crumbling.

Genpachi gave a wicked smile at her, as he said, "Hah, real cute, kid. Weren't you the one talking just earlier about unity and division?"

Jeanne kept on glaring at him. "Weren't you the one talking yesterday about just how pointless classes would be?" she prodded.

"I mean, Ishimaru could be onto something. The more we're in one place, the harder it's gonna be for any of us to try killing each other, right?" I got the chance to say.

"Well said, Enoshima. Finally someone here with some common sense!" Toranosuke beamed as he patted me on the back, maybe a little too hard. "Not that I believe anyone here really would kill anyone, what threat of Columbird's hasn't been empty so far?
So then, I expect everyone there at 9:30 sharp, hopefully I won't need to employ anyone as a truant officer". Both Genpachi and Jeanne tugged their collars at that line.

Toranosuke gave a last bow before he headed inside to talk with Simeon. After him, Jeanne then said, "Well, he did remind me of one thing. We should probably be getting back to our dorms, there's a risk that wandering around after hours will just make us easy targets".

"Pfft, this far underground, ain't no 'night and day' besides the Cole Porter tune, no matter how many timepieces that birdbrain puts up," Genpachi shrugged, then added, "Eh, be seein' you anyway, ain't much else goin' on in this dump right now".

He then left without another word, but Jeanne did stop and say to me, "Well, Tsubasa... interesting time we had, no? Hopefully we will be able to talk like this again sometime".

"Yeah, hopefully," I mumbled, seized by the thought of someone killing Jeanne. No, that wouldn't happen, the Ultimate Resistance Fighter wouldn't be taken out that easily. "Jeanne... thank you. I, ah, think that's the first time anyone's really said 'Let's meet again' to me," I smiled at her, choosing not to add Other than 'in the next life'.

She giggled, gave a quick bow, then left.
I headed back to my dorm too where, as I'd been told, I found a weapon stashed under my bed. Well, what could be called a weapon, I guess, it being a single propeller blade. Kinda felt like a mean joke to rub it in, really...

I at least sleep better than I thought I would here, a Killing Game not lending itself to an easy rest. Well, 'rest' in the normal sense of the word.

"Rise and shine, ya ingrates! It's now morning in yer blasted timezone, which means up and at 'em. Let's see if ya pansies can't get some killin' done today!" Columbird's voice came blaring into my room, instantly waking me up.

My time in the air force had at least gotten me used to getting ready pronto, and at least the hours here were reasonable. I remembered Toranosuke's class was at 0930 hours, which even with the trek north through the caves, did give me a little bit of time to socialise, maybe even treat someone to breakfast.
