Do people realise that you can't run while in the air?
If you want to move quickly around a battlefield, keep your feet on the ground. Flying past an enemy because you can't change direction makes you looks silly.

[X] Supportive. This is a simulation of combat against true enemies of the Empire. On the battlefield you must put aside any petty grudges and rivalries to work with your allies. Hua Yin is not the strongest fighter in the group, but he is no longer weak. He will endeavor to give his support to his team and work together, ensuring that troublesome foes fall more quickly and allies in trouble are not taken down. Rally those that have frozen in fear so that they too work with the group.
[X] Activate the Earth-Defying Path, to better traverse the field and support your allies. Use the Levin Step against tough opponents only where an edge is determined to be
[X] Defensive. Hua Yin will hang back and allow his opponent to hopefully become distracted attacking another disciple.
[X] Passively. Hua Yin will use the Step when he is in trouble or about to finish off a foe.
In general the write ins scare me. Leading in something we have little to know experience with, it seems more likely to make us enemies by being the convenient source of blame when another disciple fails. And it focuses on trying to fight in a group with people we have no practice fighting in a group with. Sounds like a recipe for distaster to me, especially as we just found out we have a lot of disciples that don't like us and one in our group that definitely does.
The EDP is a brand new technique, and looks to be anti synergistic with the WH style, you are trying to use a qi technique to partially negate gravity while using a defensive style focused on powerful blows and staying rooted to the ground. If we practiced a style that focused on airborne attacks maybe, but the assessment is not the best place to try something brand new, especially when move uses almost a third of our daily qi.
Play smart, play safe, play to our strengths. There will be a time to shine most likely, this looks more like a marathon than a sprint.

[X] Supportive. While Hua Yin is no longer the weakling he was when he arrived in the sect, he is still not a significant threat to another. His new technique allows him unparalleled mobility, allowing him to intervene to distract an attacker threatening to dispatch one of his comrades, or act as a distraction to allow a more powerful combatant an opening to dispatch their foe.
Hua Yin will advance carefully to meet his foe. During the battle he will prioritise intervening (in order of priority) any of the unawakened who are in danger of being defeated, then powerful combatants who are struggling to get an opening on their opponent, and finally aiding his fellow awakened. He will only act to aid Mo Xiang if he is about to be defeated. He will use all his techniques as needed. Hua Yin will use at most half of his Qi pool unless his group are in dire straits, in which case he may use up to 3/4 of his Qi pool.

This has been a somewhat frustrating sequence of votes. The majority push for a Utility art, then try and force using it into literally the first combat we get into. And that combat isn't a spar, that wouldn't be enough, we want to test it out in the combat test. If it was some badass combat buff it probably wouldn't be classified as a Utility.
It costs 5 Qi. That's 5 less times we can use Levin Step, you know, the art we spent multiple actions grinding for to be a trump card in the assessment?
Oh well, either it is less bad than I fear or we learn to vote different.
I'm mostly voting it to A. show off we have a Qi art but B. reserve power, because we've got at least 3 waves of 10 coming, so even using the Levin Step sparringly will use more Qi that a fixed cost of 5.
This is a non-costly use of the Art because we could always just turn it off it becomes a hindrance. And the Art itself is merely a hoped for boost for our supportive role in rallying the troops.

Really short one because I'm trying to go for heat of battle of type feeling and allowing the players to make more choices. Similarly to the last update, this one will be fast. Vote will close at 9:00 p.m. ET tonight.

Hua Yin decided on his strategy. He would play a supportive role, using the Earth-Defying Path to maintain his mobility as he traversed the battlefield. He had never used the Path before during combat training. This could blow up royally in his face or give him a huge advantage. He did not know which. It should make for an interesting result either way. He also intended to husband his Qi resources, only using the Levin Step as an attack when he absolutely had to. Hopefully, it would come as a powerful surprise.
He took a second, breathed, and focused his Qi inward, focusing on the Qi flows required to bring the Earth-Defying Path to life.
And quickly, he felt the weight of the world lessen from around his shoulders, even as Qi drained away from his reserves.
Looking from side to side, Hua Yin saw that many of his fellow disciples had frozen, Hua Yin yelled out, "Charge!" He followed his own order and bound forward, the Earth-Defying Path sending him flying forward.
He did not sense any of the other disciples moving forward with him. The next thing he knew, he was in the middle of the fight. He saw as a few apparitions ran past him, aiming for the more hesitant disciples. Mo Xiang was to his left and wielding a dao. He brought the weapon downwards against a ghostly opponent. The apparition blocked and countered. Significantly farther to his right was Ming Xue. She had her meteor hammer swinging around her. She stymied the charge of two apparitions with the weapon, both of them pausing before they could eat the heavy weight on the end of her rope.
One particular opponent, the one that had been across from Hua Yin earlier, continued his charge against Hua Yin. Because the barbarian had kept his charge going the entire time, he had the initiative against Hua Yin. He brought his longsword down against Hua Yin, who had finally settled down from his bound into the Wooden Hand stance.
Hua Yin dodge: INT (6) + AGL (4) + Levin Step (1) – Wooden Hand (2) = 9
+2 rerolls.
Hua Yin attack: AGL (4) + Unarmed (2) – 2 (Earth-Defying Path) = 4
Hua Yin base damage: 2 +2 (Wooden Hand) = 4
Damage is halved by Earth-Defying Path
The first Ghost Barbarian whiffed completely, having overcompensated for Hua Yin's quick movement. Hua Yin did not even have to dodge. Hua Yin countered with a powerful punch. But he overpunched, not used to his lessened weight and how throwing a punch would send an equal and opposite reaction backwards. He found out it was much harder to aim with his greatly lighter body. So, he missed his strike.
The first Ghost Barbarian struck again with a back hand. Hua Yin used the mortal iteration of the Levin Step to dodge. He managed to completely avoid his opponent's strike. However, he knew he should of have practiced the Levin Step with the Earth-Defying Path, because he was sent flying away by the sharp, aggressive, and hard step away from the Ghost Barbarian. Blasting through the air, he soon hit something.
He struck one of Ming Xue's opponents, one who was still on the outside of the spinning arc of her meteor hammer. Because he was so light, Hua Yin's impact against barely moved the large ghost. He literally bounced off the apparition. But Ming Xue saw the opportunity and took it, sending her meteor hammer to slam into the ghost's chest. It folded the barbarian in half.
Hua Yin saw his opportunity and decided to strike this second barbarian while the ghost was hurt, or at least reacting like it was hurt. But that punch was to no avail, the Earth-Defying Path throwing off his strike again. Thankfully, the second Ghost Barbarian was still too distracted by Ming Xue's strike to retaliate.
Out of the corner of his eye, Hua Yin saw that the first Ghost Barbarian was charging towards him. The scrum was really and truly going, with both sides fully engaged. Mo Xiang was using his sword to fend off an apparition and seemingly getting the better of the fight, driving the barbarian backwards. The sandy-haired boy, who Hua Yin nicknamed "Sandy" in his head, was driving punches into the chest of another apparition. The rest of the disciples were engaged to their detriment, though two were worrying away at one barbarian and seemingly stalemating.
Quickly calculating, Hua Yin knew he had one more exchange before the first barbarian would catch up and be able to reengage with him. It would then be two on one. Hua Yin didn't like those odds.
Hoping to tilt them in his favor, Hua Yin attacked the second barbarian again, taking a breath, setting his feet, and throwing from the hip. However, the second barbarian had recovered from its distraction. Though there was still a hitch in his step from Ming Xue's assault, the second barbarian moved quickly enough to dodge Hua Yin's slow attack. The second barbarian's counter moved quickly. Hua Yin managed to get inside the arc with a block but still took a strong hit from the apparition's sword, sending him flying backwards and away from the first barbarian who was charging forwards. Thankfully, the barbarian's blade was blunted.
The impact sent Hua Yin far enough away that he couldn't be immediately attacked by both. Hua Yin got another look around the battlefield. Mo Xiang had finished off his apparition, its head decorating the ground, and was turned to fight another one. Sandy was finishing off his opponent with a powerful stomp to the head. Ming Xue was still fighting her own barbarian, who was visibly battered but not yet down.
Hua Yin did not want to get sandwiched between two of the ghosts. He also kept in mind that he meant to play a support role. Seeing Ming Xue's flagging opponent, Hua Yin had an idea. He took bounding steps forward, his feet light because gravity's pull was lessened. With a little speed, he jumped through the air with a flying punch. He would not get the advantage of the Wooden Hand because he was flying through the air and not set, but he would get a boost from his charge.
warumonoqm rolls 4d6e5 = 6⊕ 1 5⊕ 6⊕ → 3 successes against 5
warumonoqm rolls 2d6e5 = 3 1 → 0 successes against 5
Ghost Barbarian 2 suffers -3 (Injury) malus and -2 (Distracted) malus.
warumonoqm rolls 2d6e5 = 5⊕ 5⊕ → 2 successes against 5
Hua Yin hits with 1 net success.
Hua Yin does 5 damage / 2 (Earth-Defying Path) = 3 (2 Stun + 1 Phys) damage.
Hua Yin's flying strike managed to knock the third barbarian reeling. Ming Xue took advantage and whipped her meteor hammer into the air and then down again, slamming it into the apparition's head. It smashed against the floor, out of the fight. Ming Xue nodded at Hua Yin in acknowledgment, before sending the meteor hammer right at him.
The weapon barely missed Hua Yin, its heavy head almost touching him before slamming into the belly of one of the barbarians that were chasing him. Now that one barbarian was engaged, there was only one more for Hua Yin to deal with. Luckily for Hua Yin, facing off against him was the barbarian that Ming Xue had already injured.
Hua Yin had a decision to make, whether he should continue with the Earth-Defying Path and try to distract his opponent until Ming Xue could finished off the uninjured first barbarian or to let the Qi flow go and fight head on the second injured barbarian who had faced off against him. Either way, he would continue to take the opportunity support his fellow disciples in their combats.
[ ] Continue being a distraction.
[ ] Fight.

Well, that was disappointing. We got two successes on Persuade and it did nothing? We practiced EDP, a superior movement tech, with an Elder and didn't find out it had significant combat maluses?
To be far, we should have seen this coming. Wooden Hand is about planting yourself firmly in the ground, but we got so enamured with the idea of flying around the battlefield we forgot our style didn't match it.
I think it's a fitting mistake for Hua Yin, at least - exuberant about showing off his new power.
Ah well, we've done some good at least. Constantly keeping 2 of them busy is decent, if we can keep ourself safe-ish

It halves our base damage, but half of four is two and in return we get another dodge die which is very helpful when we have a technique that can let us hurt people with successful dodges, plus get to better take advantage of distracted malus from our foes which is another minus 2 for them plus pick out the more injured ones to harry which will give them further maluses. Given that this is a system with a wound spiral and mechanical representation for coming from a angle our opponent can't pay attention too, being able to pick and choose our fights seems to be well worth any maluses we've taken here imo.
Maybe that will change in the future when our damage or the armor/health of our foe is higher, but then again maybe the nature of our techniques effect on our combat or our style will change in the future too.
Anyway.
Our inability to be pinned down and our ability to attack any particular opponent when a opportunity presents has already turned out to be a big help, even from a numbers standpoint given we now know that the distracted malus exists mechanically. While it's shown that we've had some trouble adjusting to using it in the fight, from the looks at the actual numbers, that seems to mostly be narrative fluff more then it giving us a malus to actually hit these guys, and it's also narratively been in our favor too.
Rather then dismissing the Earth-Gliding path and having to pay it's cost again to benefit from it, which is what fight seems to entail, I say we continue to be a distraction and help our more powerful allies to finish off their own combatants faster. It'll probably end up being a much better strategy then throwing away our best tactical option to get into a full out, knock down brawl with a guy that could end up injuring for the rest of the fight and who our allies like Ming Xue could likely finish off faster if we helped them with their current foe anyway.
I'm leaning towards continuing being a distraction.
