[x] plan dr yin

[x] Study Core Disciple Chang Minhua's annotated medical texts. These books will inevitably give Hua Yin an advantage when preparing to treat the human body, both mortal and cultivator.
.
[x]Take extra time to study for cultivation class. Hua Yin could go to the Archives to do further reading on cultivation, both as a skill and general knowledge. Hua Yin was not top of the class, that could not be borne. Tao Yangyuan was always at the Archive, and this might be a chance at developing a relationship with him.

[x] Find others to get to know. There's a lot of new disciples. It would be good to build Hua Yin's network. For example, he still had not gotten the names of the noble twins, and they both seemed pretty friendly.

[x] Study the Writ of the Broken Tree. Sure, it's mostly koans and philosophical musings, but Hua Yin was told there were cultivation insights within. He could study the Writ further and see what insights it could give.

[X] Ling Daiyu would be a distraction. Lose her and Lao Ai. Lose whatever bonus that Lao Ai would give to the group.

[x] Plan Studying, Koans and Li Gai

I think nearly the whole thread agrees on wanting a different fighting style. The problem is it requires probably 3 actions to train to a level that gives us bonuses, representing an action cost of 4 actions total. Which I would rather spend elsewhere to try and qualify for the Special Physical class.

Levin Step is probably going to be used no matter the Style we pick up, so we can easily level it and then have something to use in the future and a way to use our Qi right now to hopefully impress in the physical test.

Studying, realistically we are probably able to get 1 more Knowledge: Cultivation skill level before the test. Even that represents 1 more die. We have perfect attendance, 6 int, and are studying the Koans in preparation. We have a study group action pending. We are going to do fine, more studying won't add much greater chance of success but it can take away from other areas we can use actions to greater effect in.

Instead of a Study session that probably won't even add 1 die to the test we could have an infused Levin Step to help with sparring.

Due to attending every optional class that the Broken Tree offers, Hua Yin receives the True Scholar Talent. By combining his broad base of knowledge, he will be able to better meet challenges that require academic knowledge. He will receive +1 die when facing a Knowledge: Alchemy, Knowledge: Crafting, or Medicine test.
Interesting that it doesn't include Knowledge: Cultivation as it kind of makes sense to me that knowledge of the other fields would help with Cultivation rather than each other. I'm guessing that's either because of balance reasons, or doing well in the Cultivation test would reward that talent. I'm not sure on how rare these talents are supposed to be.

This talent is obscenely good, basically a skill level in each of the three skills. Except better long term because they don't raise the xp level. Also a little worse until we reach one because of the unskilled penalty.

[x] Lao Ai would be a valuable contribution. Invite Ling Daiyu to the group. How bad could she actually be?

"As part of my sell, the four best performers in this class will receive some top-grade spirit-ink.
"Everyone did well. I am proud of you all. But the winner of the crafting supplies is Lao Ai."
How many prizes were meant to be available for the talismongering class? Last week it was 4, but this week just Lao Ai won.
After all, Core Disciple Mao Yujing said that more than one of us could receive the prize."
Same for the cultivation class, I was under the impression there would be only one winner?

Good catch on the Talismongering one, but as for the cultivation class:
"Before I forget again like I did last week, there will be an assessment in the eighth week of class. You will be graded on your advancement, your participation in class, and on your results in an exam that I will hand out. The ones who do the best will receive private tutoring from me on either a Qi technique I know or on one I pick from the Archives based on what you're looking for. I hope you all cultivate as much as you can and study hard." She saw the looks that some of the nobles gave her, "Don't worry those who have already advanced. That till be taken into consideration."
it was always multiple people that could "win" it, otherwise I assume no one would join a study group.

Just a reminder for everyone this is on offer for passing the Physical Exam:
"After eight weeks, there will be an examination. Those who pass the examination will join a special combat class where you will receive more individual training. As I said, the general physical training course will continue, though I will no longer be teaching it. I will be replaced by one of the Inner Disciples." He shrugged, "I suggest you do your best in the exam. The Sect rewards those that excel."

Core Disciple training, more individual so we can practice our own style. Seems pretty good and if we push hard we can still make significant gains towards it by getting levin step infused.

Honestly not too fussed about the fighting style yet. If we get something new it can be some kind of weapon style, so that we'll have the Wooden Hand as back up in case he's disarmed. We should probably wait until we get access to more than the basic stuff anyway. Cultivating the Qi version of the Levin Step and the potentially another one, should probably be prioritized before finding a new martial style.

  • [x] Plan Levin Step, Koans and Li Gai
-[x] Go to physical training during the week. Sure, it was hell, but Hua Yin knew he was getting better. He was no longer a complete and utter embarrassment, but he knew he could do even better.
-[x] Go to cultivation training during the week. Cultivation's the whole point of coming to the Broken Tree, isn't it? It'd be a waste to not go to class. Hua Yin will be returning to the learning hall this week.
-[x] Practice the Levin Step. Hua Yin had reached the first stage of the technique. He could now use it in a fight, but there was more to the manual and studying further could only help his combat abilities. He knew there was more mortal insights to glean and then after that, Hua Yin could learn how to invest the Step with Qi.
-[x] Spend time with Li Gai. Hua Yin knew that Li Gai was feeling disappointed in himself and could definitely use a friend to support him.
-[x] Study the Writ of the Broken Tree. Sure, it's mostly koans and philosophical musings, but Hua Yin was told there were cultivation insights within. He could study the Writ further and see what insights it could give.

Honestly whilst Ling Daiyu seems shallow I wouldn't necessarily write her off; at least I don't think we should right now.
I believe Song Chyou when she says Daiyu bullied her, but I'm wary of excluding her and Lao Ai from this group on that basis. It could end up polarising relations even more.
If we let her join the group, then she shouldn't start any shit there, otherwise I imagine Yang Genji would smack it down. And as far as her character goes I'm skeptical of the idea that she's not treating Lao Ai well. She's been consistently genuinely supportive of her (publically so), and the makeup thing is hardly a mark against her?

I think we can let her join without it blowing up, and the risk would be worth getting Lao Ai as well.

....

Lao Ai seemed to resolve herself. "I will do it on one condition. If Ling Daiyu can join us."

[ ] Lao Ai would be a valuable contribution. Invite Ling Daiyu to the group. How bad could she actually be?

[ ] Ling Daiyu would be a distraction. Lose her and Lao Ai. Lose whatever bonus that Lao Ai would give to the group.

+2 Successes to Persuasion Progression.

Depending on some rolls in the study group action, it might not be there. The action will (likely) be there by the 8th update, with its attendant bonuses.

aka either we don't invite her then there are rolls to see if she sabotages the study group because she is vindictive for not being allowed to join, or she joins and there are rolls to either see how bad she actually is and whether that ruins the group, or she is bad and there are rolls to see how well we can manage her to stop the study group for imploding.

I don't think the former is too likely, she might take it as something of a personal slight if we turn lao ai down because she is requiring daiyu's attendance. But the implications here are that if we reject her our study group is slightly less effective than it could be because lao ai is a valuable person to have on the team, but there is no risk of the study group imploding. Versus if we allow her to come, then there will be social rolls of some kind, likely preventing conflicts that Ling daiyu causes for some reason or another and IF we roll well then the study group will be better off for it in the long run. However if we roll poorly then the study group may not be an option anymore.

And i'm not knocking her supporting ao lai on its own, but drawing conjecture based on what little we've heard. I do think it is pretty obvious that she is trying to turn Lao Ai into her coat tail though. Which tbh i think is kinda normal for awakened to do with mortals it seems. Which is another point, Daiyu bullied chyou despite the fact she was awakened with the insult of and I quote"

"No, I don't. There're hardly any farmers here, and the ones that are don't like me because I'm Awakened. There's hardly anyone here from the Vermillion Plains! Everyone thinks I'm a country bumpkin, and everyone I talk to thinks I'm annoying." A sob. "They make fun of the way I look and the way I talk." She looked on the verge of tears again, "They don't even try to hide it! The nobles treat me like I'm worse than doggy poo. And that Ling Daiyu. She's so mean! I hate her! She called me a fatty piggy!"

She insulted the fact that Chyou is basically ugly. Now we don't know exactly why she did that. Perhaps Chyou overstepped cultural norms for nobles by getting too friendly with a noble despite being a country peasant. But between all the stuff we know about her it seems likely that Daiyu values physical beauty very highly based on her insults, her own beauty and the fact that she is paying for makeup for her own hopeful lackey.

Between all we've heard of her so far, she doesn't seem like a pleasant person. And given all the insinuations and information about her we really shouldn't invite her to the study club.

And really if we are trying to be friends with chyou, isn't it pretty rude to not only exclude her from our private study group intentionally, but also invite the person who bullied her and that she hates? Like if nothing else why cozy up to a known bully?

I think we should leave out the meta things like reading too much into the options. Also for the study group I think there are a lot of ways it could not go well, if one member doesn't get enough out of it they could easily decide to leave.

From what we know in the story Ling called Song "a fatty piggy" but also runs back to encourage Lao in her runs she is struggling with. She could be a horrible person manipulating Lao (though I would feel like for a remarkably pretty girl they would be better targets than a smart but otherwise unimpressive mortal girl) or she could be a complex character who does good and bad things and can change.

I'm not saying I won't vote to burn any bridges with her, just that I don't want to yet until we get a better read on her.

I'm not saying we should totally torch any bridges with her either or that we should never interact with her, but i think its a really bad look to exclude the also hard trying chyou who isn't doing bad academically out of the study group but purposely include someone who bullied her. I think either interacting with her bully or excluding her is both fine on their own, but together is just a really bad look.

I did mention that we may not be getting the whole story of why she got bullied, with how overbearing chyou is i wouldn't be surprised if she stepped on daiyu's toes metaphorically or accidentally insulted her. But considering what we've seen and what she has said, I don't have enough goodwill with her to risk our study sessions on the off chance that she is just easy to insult and isn't an active bully.

Also if she really is trying to turn Lao into a lackey wouldn't it make sense for her to be nicer to her than some random?

I don't think Daiyu is unredeemable or not worth interacting with at all, but given what we know I don't want to risk stepping on a possible landmine now when it could cost us the goodwill of the others we have already recruited.

Yeah, I agree that could be bad. But also we didn't really go out and try to invite her, we invited Lao and this is her condition for joining. If Song does hear about it and if she gets offended it seems like something that could be explained away pretty easily. At least that's how I see it.

It's not like Lao is essential to the group to function, she named her price and we have decided the risk outweighs the reward. Why should we risk our new budding friendship on some random smart girl with a partner who allegedly bullied said new friend? It's an unnecessary risk when we have already convinced two out of the three people we were looking for to join the group without the need for risky conditionals. Lao may be smart but she's not worth risking the stability of both our new friendship and study group.

I think everyone is reading it and seeing oh, Lao is going to be a distraction and kill the study group. I think that is a possibility, but it's also possible that without Lao the group gets less dice and it's less productive and it isn't worth enough to a member and they leave it. Also there's an element of oh, all the top performers are here if I don't go I risk missing out and falling behind, whereas for each we don't get that starts to lose its sway.

I don't think Lao herself will be a distraction and kill the group, I think her unnecessary baggage will try her hardest to smother the group in it's cradle so her new lackey doesn't find a support group that isn't her. I may be being unreasonable about Daiyu but we already are hearing about her petty and vindictive tendencies from our new friend, whether or not she is a reliable source is debatable but i'm willing to believe her until proven otherwise and i don't think the fragile alliance of the study group is a great place to test her character. So yes we will miss out on some potential dice but it's the difference of having guaranteed dice from the two other members versus potentially gaining some more dice but also risking both the group itself and our friendship with Chyou if she isn't understanding of us creating a study group with her bully. Imo the risk isn't worth the reward.
