[X] The Midnight Visitation: An introductory cultivation technique that focuses on soaking on re-cycling Qi in the air to get the maximum amount of benefit out of the minimum amount of Qi. At first level, reroll 2 dice on a cultivation roll.

[X] Walk to the rescue. Something has obviously happened, but you don't know what yet. Greet the both of them and inquire as to the situation here.

Looks like Midnight Visitation takes it! (I think? I'm in a different timezone and it's too early for math lol)

I had voted for the Visitation but I've since removed my vote because I am afraid that this will probably end up being too edgy...

Hua Yin walked forward, feeling awkward. He had not had much experience with crying women in his life. Crying anyone really. He coughed to make his presence known. He called out, "Song Chyou, brother disciple. May I help?"

Song Chyou looked up from her seat on the floor. Her eyes were wet and bruised from crying and her nose was snotty. "Hua Yin," she called and began wiping her eyes as quickly as she could, trying to control her breathing and her tears. "I am so sorry. This is so embarrassing. Both you and Feng Chaoxiang seeing me crying!" And then suddenly she started sobbing again, harder than she had before. "N-n-nothing seems to go right for me here! I should go home!"

Hua Yin looked at the newly identified Feng Chaoxiang in confusion. Feng Chaoxiang shrugged. He obviously had no idea what was going on either. Hua Yin noticed that Feng Chaoxiang was playing with the white tassels that had been tied around his waist over his disciple's robes. Feng Chaoxiang said, in a growly voice, "I found her here like this."

"Song Chyou, what is wrong?" Hua Yin asked, coming closer. Sensing him approaching, Song Chyou got up and glommed onto him. Hua Yin had no idea what to do. It was the first time in his life that a girl outside of his family had hugged him. He awkwardly held his arms out straight, not returning the hug. Thinking better of it, he patted her on the back with his right hand. It was awkward.

Feng Chaoxiang looked on for a moment. Thinking better of idling, Feng Chaoxiang also walked over and patted her on the back. The stocky peasant girl turned from Hua Yin and glommed onto Feng Chaoxiang in turn. He took it better than Hua Yin did, hugging the girl gently. Feng Chaoxiang and Hua Yin exchanged glances over Song Chyou's shoulders. Neither boy knew quite what to do.

After a moment when the only sound was Song Chyou's crying, Hua Yin said, "Sister Song Chyou, I and brother Feng Chaoxiang can only help if you tell us what's wrong."

Song Chyou took a deep breath and slowly got her sobbing under control. She stepped away from Feng Chaoxiang, who looked relieved at no longer having a crying girl stuck to him. Song Chyou sat down on the floor again, her knees drawn to her chest.

"I don't have any friends here. You're both so nice to me, but you're not my friends. I miss home. I miss rice paddies, and my parents, and the village, and all the people I know!"

"You have to have some friends, from your classes at least," Hua Yin replied.

"No, I don't. There're hardly any farmers here, and the ones that are don't like me because I'm Awakened. There's hardly anyone here from the Vermillion Plains! Everyone thinks I'm a country bumpkin, and everyone I talk to thinks I'm annoying." A sob. "They make fun of the way I look and the way I talk." She looked on the verge of tears again, "They don't even try to hide it! The nobles treat me like I'm worse than doggy poo. And that Ling Daiyu. She's so mean! I hate her! She called me a fatty piggy!"

Hua Yin had noticed that Song Chyou had a rural drawl to her words, but it wasn't that bad. She was definitely understandable. And sure, the stocky girl wasn't the most attractive person he'd ever seen, but she had kindness in her eyes. She had a strength to her features, more so since she had advanced. With her breakthrough, her features had become less homely. Hua Yin didn't quite remember who Ling Daiyu was, but he thought she might have been the ridiculously attractive girl who was always with Lao Ai. Hua Yin had not noticed anyone being particularly mean to Song Chyou, but he had not really been paying attention. Hua Yin was too focused on the few friends he had already made and on training.

Feng Chaoxiang growled, "I'll be your friend. The rest of them can go to the many hells. You can be part of my crew when I go back to the sky."

"But I'm afraid of heights."

"We'll fix that," Feng Chaoxiang smiled widely, showing just how pointed most of his teeth were.

Hua Yin really did not know what to say. This was too much of an emotional moment for him. Neither his education nor his experiences with his family prepared him for this. But he nevertheless felt like volunteered, "Song Chyou, I consider you a friend too. I enjoy our conversations."

Hua Yin thought about asking her to sit with him and his friends during meals. Hua Yin was not sure if it was a good idea. He had an intuition that the taciturn Gao Jin found the excitable girl to be a bit much. And it was almost guaranteed that Li Gai would think he was being replaced by another Awakened. Not to mention it would make it awkward if they ever talked about Tianlang or the Kiss of Tribulation. But Hua Yin had been a lonely kid in the past and knew that the Imperial Academy would have been unbearable without the few friends he had made.

[ ] Invite Song Chyou to share meals. This will likely cause friction with Hua Yin's other friends, but it'll make Song Chyou into a new friend.

[ ] Don't invite Song Chyou to share meals. Nothing will change. Hua Yin's friends won't be annoyed, but Hua Yin will not be as close to Song Chyou as he could be.

[ ] Offer something else (Write-in).

Hua Yin took the manual for the Midnight Visitation to the eastern wing of the Archives. He had seen signs that said the printer's office was near there. He was excited at the prospect of a new cultivation technique. He hadn't yet made his second advancement while Gao Jin had, and Hua Yin was eager to catch up. He had felt how the Sprout's Yearning synergized with the Qi thrown off by the Font of the Supplicant's Tears, and he believed that his new technique would do the same for the Kiss of Tribulation.

When he got to the printer's room, he saw that it was a large space filled with printing presses and with disciples working at tables with writing brushes. It was busy with people and presses constantly moving. When he went up to the attendant disciple, he told them that he was looking to have the technique manual copied so he could take it home. The discipled look bored as she asked if he wanted to pay in silver or points. He handed over a silver coin. She told him that it would be ready towards the end of the week. That would give him the chance to practice it in front of Core Disciple Mao Yujing. It wouldn't be enough time to really get to cultivating with it, but it would be enough to get a taste of what the Midnight Visitation was like.

Walking out, he felt a sense of satisfaction. He was taking steps towards being a better cultivator. He did not know if his investment in this new technique would pay off, but it was enough that he had seen a need and tried to fill it. He was taking steps on his Dao to find his Dao, and it felt right.

-----

Cultivation class was again in the Font of the Supplicant's Tears. Hua Yin again was struck by the beauty of the place. He loved the way the light played on the water and how the sprites flickered above like fireflies. The stillness of the place quieted all of the stress in his heart. He took his usual seat in the middle of Font's shore. Ming Xue and Gao Jin sat next to him like the last time, with Guan Zhi and Li Gai nearby. Song Chyou and Feng Chaoxiang had also chosen to sit close by. He gave them both a smile, lingering on the peasant girl for a moment to see how she was. She seemed much recovered from her crying the other night.

The few first-years who usually had chosen to usually not take part in the class joined anyways in order to get access to the Font. Core Disciple Mao Yujing welcomed them with a small smirk. "Welcome one and all to another week in the Supplicant's Tears. This week we will continue exploring your growth in the Sprout's Yearning. As we did in the past, I will also allow you to use whatever technique you'd like on the last day. I will help you with it as I can.

"This is the final week we'll be cultivating together before the assessment. We have two more weeks of study. I am proud of many of you. Almost a third of you have advanced. That is a goodly number considering you've only cultivated for a short time." Core Disciple Mao Yujing offered a smile to the room. "But I wanted to remind you that your first major exam is just a few weeks away. It will encapsulate everything you've learned so far. As I've explained in the past, the prize will go to the top performers and will be a Qi technique of my choice. Though it will not directly help your cultivation, it will give you a taste of what Qi can do. Hopefully, it will inspire you to further develop. But enough of that, on to your favorite part of class, questions."

She gave the class an evil grin. Some of the disciples who thought this would just be a cultivation session looked visibly disappointed. Others looked around at the top performers, including Hua Yin, in envy. They already knew that they were knocked out of the running for the prize. Hua Yin on the other hand was excited. It was another chance to excel. He had not been satisfied with his prior performances in this class, and this would hopefully allow him to make up for that.

INT (6) + Knowledge: Cultivation (1) + 1 (Copious Notes) vs. TN 5 (Top of the Class)
Hua Yin rolls 8 dice.
warumonoqm rolls 8d6e5 = 5⊕ 4 5⊕ 1 5⊕ 5⊕ 6⊕ 4 → 5 successes against 5
warumonoqm rolls 1d6e5 = 3 → 0 successes against 5

And he definitely did. When it was his turn to be questioned, he answered every question with elegance and aplomb. It seemed as if everything had clicked. His interpretations felt spot on, and he had insights into the material that Core Disciple Mao Yujing smiled at. He even referenced the philosophers and cultivators that he had read about in the Archives.

Yang Genji looked back and gave him a nod. The good-looking noble girl had done almost as well as he had. Zhe Chao on the other hand had flopped. Their face was stormy as they looked back at Hua Yin. Tao Yangyuan gave Hua Yin a smile. He could afford it. The colorful boy's answers had been as good as they always were. Lao Ai whispered something into the ear of the ridiculously pretty girl who always sat next to her. Gao Jin, as always in this class, looked lost. Hua Yin did not quite understand it. Gao Jin understood the least of any of the cultivators but was rising rapidly enough that he was almost at Yang Genji's level of cultivation, and she was already in the pinnacle initiate Realm.

Hua Yin was satisfied at his own performance. He thought just maybe this made up for his abysmal performance a few classes ago. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't, but either way, Hua Yin felt good. Hopefully, this would be the start of great performances going forward.

When it came time for cultivation, he was ready. He closed his eyes and imagined the sprout. It had become almost second nature at this point. As he relaxed himself into the Sprout's Yearning, Core Disciple Mao Yujing's voice, calming and constantly leading and giving tips, faded. He felt something new. Something about his cultivation was different. There was an extra oomph to what he felt. Something that felt like a breeze with the scents of spring, a stirring that felt like living itself. Sure, he had felt it before, but now it felt more vibrant, more real. He took it in like he took in the rest of the Tear's Qi, letting it flow throughout his body.

WIL (6) + Cultivation (1) + 2 (Awakened) + 2 (Qi-rich environment) +1 (Teacher Tips) + 1 (Sprout's Yearning Attunement)
Hua Yin rolls 13 dice.
warumonoqm rolls 13d6e5 = 5⊕ 3 5⊕ 5⊕ 6⊕ 5⊕ 3 5⊕ 5⊕ 2 1 6⊕ 6⊕ → 9 successes against 5
warumonoqm rolls 1d6e5 = 1 → 0 successes against 5
Hua Yin receives 9 successes.

And flow it did, like a river, he felt the Qi coursing through him. He didn't know what it was about today, but he really felt the Qi in the air, felt it as it entered every one of his channels. He pushed them into the blockages that lead to his dantian. He felt them loosen, the impurities shifting. He was close, he knew it, right at the edge of a breakthrough. And then he was knocked out of it.

He looked behind him at the sense of spiking Qi. It was Song Chyou. She was breaking through again. She glowed, her eyes shining with an inner light. And then a foul smell reached into the air. Black goo started seeping from the pores in her skin. But even as the blackness began to cover her, her face changed. Her square features softened. Her peasant looks became more elegant. She still couldn't be called attractive, but like all cultivators, she became more striking as her cultivation advanced. And as an Awakened, her presence also grew. Though not as oppressive as that of a more senior Awakened, he could feel the touch of pressure in the back of his eyes. That was two Awakened that had reached the mid Initiate Realm. He needed to catch up.

Looking around, he saw people both with disgust and envy in their eyes. He understood the disgust. The smell really was that bad. He marveled that those impurities were inside of him, inside of everyone who had not yet advanced. It would soon be his turn to smell that bad. The envy he also understood. He felt a slight bit of it himself, even though he knew that he was close to breaking through himself. Everything in the Broken Tree was about excelling, about advancing. Most of the mortals had not broken through yet. They would, of course, be envious of someone who had broken through to mid Initiate. Especially because she was a peasant, without the training and private tutors that someone from the nobility had. The resentful mortals could not tell themselves that they just weren't given the same advantages. No, she was just that much better than they were. Hua Yin knew he would get those looks himself when he advanced. He already got them as an Awakened and as the lead in so many of the classes. It would only get worst.

If he was a noble, he would've sycophants around him, all of them trying to get close to the rising star. He had seen Yang Genji literally beat them away. Mo Xiang embraced them, basking in their attention. The noble twins, whose names he somehow still did not know, had less sycophants, but they were still popular. He thought it was less their status and more the fact that they both seemed legitimately nice. But because Hua Yin was not of noble blood, he did not have an entourage. He thought that might change if he really and truly excelled, but it hadn't happened yet. He had, however, seen some of the mortals give appraising looks at Gao Jin after he had broken through for the second time. He thought that the mortals had reconsidered once they heard Gao Jin's low-class city-boy accent.

Core Disciple Mao Yujing told Song Chyou to go clean up with a smile on her face. No one else broke through the rest of the week. That is until the last day of classes, when the students were supposed to use any other cultivation techniques that they knew.

Hua Yin had picked up his copy of the Midnight Visitation from the Archives. He had poured over it the night before. Like with every book he read, he committed it to his prodigious memory. Without practice, he knew that he wouldn't be able to truly use it to cultivate, but practice was practice.

When it came to the last day, he sat down and began to breathe. The Visitation counseled shallower breaths than the Sprout's Yearning. It was not the deep breath of a growing plant. Instead, it was a gentle breath, gentle like the lightest of breezes on a dark night. The image that the technique counseled was just as gentle, that of the light of the stars on fresh frost. As he breathed, Hua Yin felt the richness of the Qi in the air, but he felt it in a different way. There was less waste in his breath, less excess. He felt the flow, but it was different than what had come before. Instead of taking in Qi and letting some escape, he took it and let it cycle within himself. He took in everything that the Qi could give and held onto it tight. Something ached within him at the feeling. it felt like loneliness, like homesickness.

Core Disciple Mao Yujing came over. Hua Yin could feel her observing him even through his closed eyes. "The Midnight Visitation. That's the first time I've seen it in awhile. It's introductory but rare. Not everyone goes for celestial Qi. You can't find it everywhere. But it's also attuned to lightning Qi. The sudden strike of loneliness straight to the heart." As Hua Yin opened his eyes to look at Core Disciple Mao Yujing, she saw her get a canny look over her face. "Someone's been visiting a certain canine haven't they?" Hua Yin shrugged, not wanting to give anything away in such a public location.

"Alright. Here's a couple of tips. You're right that it's not about deep breaths, but you need to breathe just a tiny bit deeper. The Visitation is a technique that makes the most out of a low Qi environment. That's another reason it's not as common at the Broken Tree. We have plenty of Fonts. But it can be useful when you're outside of the Sect. It's a choice. Not sure it's a great one, but your Dao is your own." She shrugged and then said, "Now, when you let the Qi flow through your body, take every bit of it, don't let it flow outside. I know with the Yearning some of the flow escapes, but with the Visitation, you're keeping it as much as you can inside of yourself. Every time you cycle, you take in a little bit more and let a little less escape."

Hua Yin took her words to heart and slightly deepened his breath. He felt the Qi inside within himself and held onto it like the memory of home. Though the Qi within the Supplicant's Tears was plentiful, he took it in himself like a miser. He felt himself slowly becoming more efficient. He was nowhere near mastering even in the first level of the technique, but he made some progress.

But cultivation wasn't all good that week. On that final day, Mo Xiang broke through. Even though he smelled bad and was covered with black gunk, the beautiful boy still somehow looked good. He actually looked even better than he already had. Hua Yin hated Mo Xiang's self-satisfied face.

-----

You can choose whether to invite Song Chyou for meals separate from whatever plan you all come up with.

As per usual, pick 5.

[ ] Go to physical training during the week. Sure, it was hell, but Hua Yin knew he was getting better. He was no longer a complete and utter embarrassment, but he knew he could do even better.

[ ] Go to cultivation training during the week. Cultivation's the whole point of coming to the Broken Tree, isn't it? It'd be a waste to not go to class. Hua Yin will be returning to the learning hall this week.

[ ] Go to the introductory talismongering class. He had done alright in the class, definitely in the upper tier. Sure, he was behind Lao Ai, but she seemed to have brought prior knowledge to the class. He still felt like he was in the running for the top slot.

[ ] Practice the Levin Step. Hua Yin had reached the first stage of the technique. He could now use it in a fight, but there was more to the manual and studying further could only help his combat abilities. He knew there was more mortal insights to glean and then after that, Hua Yin could learn how to invest the Step with Qi.

[ ] Take extra time to study combat skills. Hua Yin could take what spare moments he had in the day and work on his unarmed skills at the training fields. Guan Zhi and Gao Jin said they would be there, and maybe would be willing to help if asked.

[ ] Take extra time to study for cultivation class. Hua Yin could go to the Archives to do further reading on cultivation, both as a skill and general knowledge. Hua Yin was not top of the class, that could not be borne. Tao Yangyuan was always at the Archive, and this might be a chance at developing a relationship with him.

[ ] Cultivate at the Font of the Supplicant's Tears. Hua Yin would go to cultivate at the Font of the Supplicant's Tears. Unless there's a write-in otherwise, he will use the strongest cultivation aide that he can. Ming Xue also spends her morning cultivating, and maybe they could build a friendship on that foundation.

[ ] Cultivate at the Kiss of Tribulation. He might see his friends there, and maybe even get a chance to speak to Tianlang. Unless there's a write-in otherwise, he will use the strongest cultivation aide he has available.

[ ] Start a study group for the cultivation class. Maybe some of the high-performing students would like to get together and make each other better. Hua Yin could at least approach Tao Yangyuan, Lao Ai, and Yang Genji to see if they were interested. Hua Yin thought about adding Zhe Chao but his intuition told him that would be a bad idea.

[ ] Find others to get to know. There's a lot of new disciples. It would be good to build Hua Yin's network. For example, he still had not gotten the names of the noble twins, and they both seemed pretty friendly.

[ ] Study the Writ of the Broken Tree. Sure, it's mostly koans and philosophical musings, but Hua Yin was told there were cultivation insights within. He could study the Writ further and see what insights it could give.

[ ] Gao Jin has offered to spend some time sparring with Hua Yin if he has time in exchange for Hua Yin's help practicing reading. The two boys will practice together in their dormitory. This will also improve Gao Jin's literacy.

[ ] Find a new martial art. The Wooden Hand didn't seem to be the perfect mesh for Hua Yin. He could go to the Archives to find something that fit better. He'd need a pass to see the really good stuff, but there had to be basic manuals that disciples could look at, right?

[ ] Spend time with Li Gai. Hua Yin knew that Li Gai was feeling disappointed in himself and could definitely use a friend to support him.

[ ] Explore the Supplicant's Stone and its attendant woods. There are caves, there are woods, there is adventure waiting. Core Disciple Li Ren had mentioned that there are hidden testing sites that may help with cultivation.

[ ] Write-in.

Eyyy this'll help us understand Song Chyou even better :D

Not everyone goes for celestial Qi.
I was right!

But it's also attuned to lightning Qi.
Wasn't expecting that but I'll take it!

The plan kinda requires y'all to vote for my Song choice as well, but I think it has potential :)

@warumono Do I need to specify the cultivation method or will Hua Yin use MV automatically from now on?

Was basically going to say this, but also invite Feng Chaoxiang.

I don't wanna annoy our current friend group. This should be fine. I hope she doesn't hate studying lol

The same as cede's plan except we get a new martial style instead of going to talismongering class. I'm not really interested in continuing talismongering after the class is over and the rewards seem to just be raw materials to do more talismongering...which i don't want to do. Would rather finish our customization in getting a martial art that actually suits our style. Otherwise i'm good with cede's plan. It advances our cultivation, keeps up our physical training and lets us do a little bit more studying to get ready for the exam. Seems good to me.

I agree. But at the same time, we may as well go? We've already gone to 5/6 optional classes...

Somehow managed to convince myself to vote for your plan based on how bad my reasoning is lol.

How bout this, you change your plan name to Cultivating Friendships, and I'll change mine back to Making Friends? I want the pun name to win dangit.
