Animus Ex Nihilo - A God Quest

I'd also note that storing our power in undead seems to be a straight improvement over doing so in sea life as the undead will actually do useful things for us well we power them, and we're still able to reclaim the power per normal so storing power in sea life seems rather wasteful.
But I'd not like to create undead without any good reason. Right now there's no specific use we would need undead for. Creating just to have them doesn't sit right with me.

Does no one want to look around, and make sure we're not further fueling the Devourer? We've invested a lot of power in preventing it from further growing in strength by devouring our dead so why are we suddenly avoiding a one-time single power expense to make sure its not gaining power from elsewhere?

I'm not interested in leaning further into Undead servitors so it's just a matter of favoring the Sea life aesthetic for storing Power. We should store some power though, so we can work towards getting the Healing domain eventually.

As for the Devourer's servants, it's a pretty low priority since I find it highly unlikely any of its worship are found among the Sea Peoples. The Devourer is quite literally seen as our nemesis, the demonic figure in mythology. We also ensured our Burial rites are kept strongly last turn, which should make any unorthodox death rites rarer. I don't see how the Devourer could gain any measurable worship from our peoples.

They appear to be lesser divine servitors so they should be capable of defending our people (the New Devourer literally used his in a god battle I'd point out) and doing any task required of them. Even, just the former of these two makes them superior to just storing our power in fish as we're attempting to help our people recuperate in a period of vulnerability where their numbers are low so anything we can do to help protect them is a good thing. It also helps that all the people who worship us except the Traveling People recognize our death domain so by using the undead to have a direct hand in their lives we should also help increase their faith in us.

I'd point out that the Devourer had worshipers even among the populations it terrorized as seen with the New Devourer who's undead human servants were all former worshipers of the Devourer that existed within Harsh Mountain's people so just being opposed to the Devourer doesn't seem to be enough to stop it from gaining servants among your people, and the Devourer has had far longer to accumulate worshippers among our people than Harsh Mountain's.

It specifically says we can make simple undead and minds, so I wouldn't trust them to be good at anything on the level of a divine servant. As I said before, if we have a need for simple hunters to maybe hunt down lesser devourer servants then sure. But right now we have no idea if there even are any, and if simple undead can do anything but scratch them.

We can have water themed undead, they who drag the living beneath the waves.

do you recognize the bodies in the water?

To be clear: The Carrion Bird was not a regular undead. It was something else, created by sacrificing a ton of power that was stored in lesser undead. Do not expect the first basic undead you make to be able to fight two spirits and a divine servant. And to nearly win that match at that.

@Azel
Is it possible to combine domains?
Errr i mean like actions
Like making Undead Sea Creatures using both our domains

...What do you think a lesser divine servitor is? That's simply the term I created for the myriad undead servants we saw under the control of the New Devourer because they are simple undead with simple minds created via our divine power. I do not expect them to be on the level of our herald that is why I termed them to be lesser it is literally in their name.

And, again you still need an army in peacetime just because we do not see an immediate threat to our people coming at us at this very moment is not an excuse to not have servants capable of repelling such a force especially when we know the Devourer is capable of creating its own armies of undead creatures that are strong enough to terrorize the domain of god even well being hunted by two gods, and a herald. Plus, we're spending the power anyways we might as well spend it on something useful.

There seems to be some confusion that is not what I think the action will do. I'm after those lesser undead servants that managed to evade 2 gods, and a herald for a significant period of time well terrorizing Harsh Mountain's people they seem more useful for what I'm after than the Carrion Bird anyways as they can cover much more ground than the Carrion Bird due to being more numerous well still being of high enough quality to provide some decent security.

Not when it is made of things that would be rightly considered abominations. Besides how do you want our people to recognise which undead are ours and which are the devourers?

Better to keep it simple and have undead= enemy.

The ability to protect our people matters more than the sensibilities of certain individuals as I personally see no reason why undead guardians should be considered abominations especially when we don't even need to use human undead if we do not wish to do so, we are perfectly capable of using animals land or sea-based if we really want to after all. And, they can figure that out themselves just as they've learned to tell their own warriors apart in battle as this seems decidedly below the level of abstraction for this quest.

[] Plan: Rebuild, React, and Reflect
-[] Bless the plants. 1
-[] Bless the fishers. 1 + Herald
-[] Bless the Travelling People. 1
-[] Heal the people. 1
-[] Bless the bereaved. 2
-[] Find the Devourers servants. 1
-[] Try to learn more about the nature of your power. 1

The idea is imbuing plants is a long term benefit, and fishing is the lifeblood of our civilizations, goats are cool, but I'm fine with the protein being primarily fish. Trying to add the Travelling People seems worthwhile, the more followers we have the stronger we will be, it can't really hurt us if we're helping them as they are eliminating the Devourer's undead. Healing the people is just always a good action for us.

Then I find myself going back and forth between "Blessing the Bereaved" or "Protect the dead." Blessing the Bereaved helps our living, and further instills our preferred death rites, while Protecting the dead has become a bit less important because we gain more power from the dead easier now, my worry is that the Devourer may try animate our dead, however I consider the fact the Devourer still has limited actions and we've shown that we're taking more than they are there, and if the Devourer does come at least we know they are entering our domain, which is preferable for when we do take them down.

Eliminating followers of the devourer is just good form, and we've seen the Devourer do things we can't even imagine doing yet, we need to understand our power much more to deal with this threat.

Well I think they are more a security risk than help. People can tell their warriors from the enemy by just talking to them, which I doubt regular zombies can do. And that's what they are, dead bodies that are able to move and follow orders, not any sacred guardian, zombies.

And any sign we can make them do could easily be copied by the Devourers, so its better that All Undead= bad. Making our own undead would just make our people more easy to infiltrate not less.

People, rarely tell their warriors apart on the battlefield by talking to them pre-gunpowder era and would instead usually tell them apart via garment or color. And, I'd note that those zombies are sacred guardians because we have made them just as our herald is a sacred guardian of our people because we made it.

Also, again extremely below our level of abstraction, we're a god, not a monarch, and the Devourer is the same we do not play with tricks like dressing up our undead that's a people thing plus I'd note that it'd be extremely easy for us to tell which undead do and do not have our power in them which would allow us to tell them apart so literally giving our undead a standing order of "just kill any other undead that doesn't have our divine power in them" would be enough.

And, at this point, Azel is figuring out some way for undead to be identified as our undead rather than the Devour's below our level of abstraction, or is it something we should be addressing in our plans?

Your undead won't exactly look like the frostbitten shamblers of the Devourer, so unless they got a illusion or trickery related domain while you were not looking, the people should be able to tell the difference at a glance.

Generally speaking, the question you all need to settle is if you want undead in the first place. The practical implementation can and will be settled in subsequent chapters.
It's just something you can do because you have power over Death, but nothing obligates you to use the ability. You can just as well decide to be firmly the "the dead deserve their rest"-kind of death-god and actively use your control over them to destroy all undead wherever you find them. Or you make some solely for experimental purposes, never have them leave your reef, and just de-animate them once you learned more about the process.

On that note, the vote has been open for a while. Just in case people were waiting for an announcement from me.

I am more concerned about the power upkeep, ie power cost per turn.

@Azel do we know how much power upkeep per turn is increased by creating undead?

Aye, we aren't forced to do anything it is a quest after all, and I, have to imagine as we advance our sea domain or healing domain once we acquire it will allow us to gain similar abilities to what we've gained here but themed after those but I'd still personally prefer to at a minimum raise animal corpses for the time being so that the power we're storing away is sent somewhere more useful than to just sit in some sea creatures.

Also, personally, I've just been waiting for the debates to resolve at which point I'd vote.

I don't see why it would cost us power? The herald has never cost us anything so why would these lesser servants cost anything? No, harm in asking I guess though so I'll just hold off my vote for a while longer.

If upkeep becomes a problem just shove them into sleep mode then.

Edit: I am a spiteful individual.

Everything I want. Hopefully this has the effect of multiplying worshipers through more reliable food. Also next turn we should see about making a Death herald to handle that stuff for us.

The Devourer may not even go for our dead and if they do, them believing they can enter our waters means next turn we may be able to take them on our terms. The Bereaved action continues our legend and is noticable by our followers, while protect really is only noticeable by ourselves ultimately. We need to understand our powers and capabilities better if we are going to defeat the Devourer they have been making strides and preparing complex summoning rituals, they clearly know something we don't and we need to overcome that.

The traveling folk are helping us against the Devourer's minions, and more followers is always good. Healing, Fishing, and Plants are all to help our people overcome everything that has happened recently. If we had some more points I'd be all for storing, but after our people have suffered its more important to aid them than ourselves.

Also get these Devourer followers out of us, if they worship a chaotic and corrupt death, lets give them what they want, a release into our waters.
