To Nurture the Next Generation (AU Naruto Sensei Quest)

We chose to develop in other directions, however? We cannot learn everything. We're not Orochimaru. And even then, our colleagues will also get better. We are not the only teacher in the class, nor are we the best for this student.

So because we are better at some things than others - and only slightly better at that - we are locked out of studying other skills? That makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm not saying this, but we already have bukijutsu, ninjutsu, our element of ice. That's quite a lot considering that we'll have to think about non-combat skills as well. We will either become a master at certain skills or mediocrity at many. And that still doesn't change the fact that we can teach other kids so much better. Like Miyu, Fuyumi, Byako, Mei...

The students we pick are training paths for us as well as the students. I'm not really sure what to say if you want to keep the character stagnant.

I want to progress in the skills we are already good at. In this world, there is no concept of being overly competent in violent skills. We will have a lot to learn, even the skills we are good at.
But, I suppose, further discussion is pointless. I understand your point. I just don't agree with it.

I've seen that many plans include the Doi girl. I'm really not a fan of that. From all we know of her, she's gonna take a lot of our focus in the early stages, to get her to work well with us and any other team members. I'd really rather not have to dedicate energy into "putting a halt on [the] attitude problem [of a child]".
Also, going into a teacher-student-relationship with the mindset of "embarrassing [her] is going to be fun" is really not a good practice.

Concerning the part of our skill levels: We're way above anything any of our possible students might know in any field - aside from there clan arts, obviously.
If we can't teach them in their chosen field all the way up to Kage-level, we can still get them started and point them in the right direction.
That said, I'd rather get better in Fuinjutsu and have a former pupil of us in this skill, than in something like Espionage.

Also, my understanding of the set-up is, that Jounin are expected to train regardless of teaching their team...?

I doubt that we'd be locked into treating her poorly based on the flavor-text, and while it likely would take some energy in the first turns to correct the attitude, that's not too much to ask. We also don't have to be cruel about the training, either; though figuring out the best way to teach and discipline each student will be something we have to do anyway.

What do you think of my "plan for teaching" then?
It is alright, Ryuno could be the frontline tank, Doi can ne the jack of all trades and provide both DPS or support depending on her skillset, but the wildcard is Shoto. Getting Fuinjutsu training will be a problem and until then he won't reach his full potential. He'll be average until then, my Fuinjutsu team has Akane and Ryuno with fairly positive personalities for brains and brawn to cover for Shoto's lack of specialty. Akane can see the potential of changing the battlefield and the near limitless possibilities of Fuinjutsu as something interesting. With Doi, it will cause friction instead, as she could view fuinjutsu as overly complicated and dismiss it out of pride and that might not end well.

My Combat Team plan, has 2 positive personalities to counter Doi's to have 1 less thing to worry.

Also, going into a teacher-student-relationship with the mindset of "embarrassing [her] is going to be fun" is really not a good practice.
That is not my main reason for picking her, she is a prodigy with above average in stats. She'll be a power house in any team she is in with only the minot drawback of needing an attitude adjustment. Compared to the Kaguya who is a power house but is a berserker. Doi is the best all rounder of the batch.

Yeah, I'd never want to have a Kaguya on our team.
But I see the "minor drawback" as something more than "minor": she will get special attention, even if it's negative. That's something we'll have to sell to the rest of the team. Doable, I guess.
But how she'll play with the rest of the team is a big question - and kinda the one on which the success of the team hangs. No doubt we'll be able to get them somewhere, but having an excellent team? That'll be much more difficult, with a person on the team that starts out as such a problem case of attitude.
Also, politics: her clan will expect great things from her. We'd have to deal with those expectations as well, and I'd rather avoid that, to be honest.
If we have to play politics, I'd rather go for the true long game/big picture stuff of shaping how the Village works, instead of getting one over another clan - like taking three clanless pupils and shaping them into something awesome. (And getting them into important positions, so that we have nice connections in the future to call upon...).

My Combat Team plan does have 2 clanless shinobi who are very optimistic and positive, so we won't be alienating them even if Doi gets too bratty. Even then we can frame it as a punishment training if she is way out of line. So her getting 'special treatment' can be worked around. For the politics side of things, clanless are not going to last long in Mist politics cause they don't have the connections or resources of the other clans.

They can ally with the Yuki sure and maybe even marry into the family, but they won't have much to offer and will get overlooked for other clan candidates which has a lot more political weight than the clanless that the Yuki brought in. They need to be Revolver Ocelot level Pretty Good to even get noticed let alone picked.

On the other end of the spectrum having multiple clan members are going to be a problem since other clans hated each other with a passion. Cause their parents told them that "This clan killed Uncle Ren and Grandpa Yoshi and the reason we aren't killing each other at the moment is because we are gathering our strength to wipe them out for good cause they deserve to be destroyed.". They will never get along as peers. At least with 1 clan and 2 clanless it is more manageable and having a neutral relations with a prodigy of a powerful bloodline will be a boon for the clan in the long term.

The best way to choose genin is by planning for the future. Kiri cares only about power, being a good person doesn't mean anything and will probably lead to manipulation. Choosing those who will be in positions of power is better for our clan and ourselves, having allies and cultivating the potential they have to been drawn out fully.

Byako will be the silent foundation, strong, reliable, and above average. His taijutsu and intelligence making him an easily respectable leader.

Hozuki and Doi will have a personality clash but that is fine since it can be leveraged to teach them and the friction between them can be used to smoothen both their rough edges. Hozuki will be a ninjutsu powerhouse but Doi and Byakow will serve as examples of why that is inadequate for a shinobi and how he cannot be a glass cannon.

The stronger teammates will also be necessary to bring Doi to heel and bring out her potential. Everyone is arrogant until they get their ass kicked every day, any other team with her will lead to disproportionate attention and power given to her.

Edit: Changing my vote to reduce splitting.

Voting Tally- Day Before Closing
The current votes will be closed in 24 hours. You have until then to really get a plan for the win, otherwise it's basically one of many plans that will win.

Here is the tally:

  • [X] Plan Pragmatic Team
-[X] Byako Wakatabi: A clanless boy whom his teachers noted to be "Silent but attentive". His test scores in the written are among the highest in the class and his practical scores in Taijutsu skills are noted to be good even for a Genin. Despite the lack of any Kekkei Genkai, he seems to be right up your alley.
-[X] Suijin Hozuki: A young boy from the Hozuki clan, he is noted to be a prodigy when it comes to Ninjutsu and chakra control, allowing him to use several jutsu in a row. However, his skills in other departments have been lacking according to the notes. He seems to be needing a lot of improvement in his skills.
-[X] Samuke Yuki: One of your first cousins who had just finished the academy. According to the notes, he is pretty average in combat, but was noted to be incredibly interested in the world of espionage. He is the only family member in this class, so it is natural that you would pick him, but you should be bias.

    -[X]Torukane Kurry
    -[X]Ryunosuke Momoka

-[x] Byako Wakatabi: A clanless boy whom his teachers noted to be "Silent but attentive". His test scores in the written are among the highest in the class and his practicdal scores in Taijutsu skills are noted to be good even for a Genin. Despite the lack of any Kekkei Genkai, he seems to be right up your alley.
-[x] Ruruka Doi: A girl from the Doi clan who is noted to be a prodigy and a jack-of-all-traits, but it's also said that she is a spoiled, egotistical, petty, disrespectful brat. While she seems like a pain, putting a halt on her attitude problem would do wonders for her and her team. Plus, embarrassing a Doi is going to be fun.
-[x] Shota Koruzumi: A clanless boy who is noted to study a lot of Fuinjutsu on his own and has shown a lot of interest in it. While he is below average in Taijutsu, he is a very interesting prospect.
    [X] Plan: Great potential.
    -[X] Miyu Hoshigaki
    -[X] Mei Ubonaga
    -[X]Ruruka Doi
    [X]Plan Top of the Class
    -[X] Samuke Yuki
    -[X] Byako Wakatabi
    -[X]Ruruka Doi
[X] Plan: Personalities and mostly generalist
-[X] Fuyumi Hinamori: A clanless girl from a merchant family who has been noted to be above average in both Genjutsu and with weapons. However, the notes also say that she is below average in Ninjutsu and Taijutsu, as well as having a kind and bubbly personality.
-[X] Izumi Kanon: A clanless girl who is noted to be completely average on all fronts, be it in written or practical exams. The only exception to that being that she has a great amount of charisma and is easy to make friends with. Maybe even that part of her personality could be cultivated into an effective weapon as well?
    [X] Plan: Triple S Threat
    -[X] Byako Wakatabi
    -[X] Suijin Hozuki
    -[X]Ruruka Doi

[X] Plan: Personalities and mostly generalist

I will choose the option that sounds the most interesting.

Well then, allow me to advocate my plan, Plan for Teaching
I was thinking that a complete clanless team would be nice, but the Doi girl is too much potential not to be included; Byako and Shots seem like the best clanless (potentially-speaking), and so that'll fill our team. -- I think the load out is pretty good, too: two all-around good teammates (one taijutsu-specialist) and a fuinjutsu--specialist.

[X] Plan for Teaching
-[x] Byako Wakatabi: A clanless boy whom his teachers noted to be "Silent but attentive". This gives us a PC with a few really good hooks for story: Doi gives us a short-term to medium-term goal in fixing the attitude problem (curing "brat" & getting her to value the clanless of the team), Byako gives us a more medium-term emphasis (he's got good, practical skills now and so doesn't need overly special attention), Shota gives us a more long-term goal in expanding our seal-work (we can have Shota and Byako train together w/ Byako tasked with teaching) -- after all,you learn a lot when you have to teach.

The team's got a good start, theoretically, on composition: two generalists, and a fuinjutsu-specialist. There's only one clan member, meaning we won't have any multiple-clan infighting or resentments to trip us up. The generalist "right up our alley" is the "silent but attentive type, and is notable in his taijutsu. The other generalist is a Jack-of-all-Trades genius... So theoretically this team has a lot going for it.

Yeah, remember that we have Ice Release at 24. I think through teaching our cousin we might be able to get that up to 25, which is Kage level.
