[X] Plan: Hospital, Easing Tensions and Checking for Red Flags

Hospital concessions or salvaging EU relations is honestly priority one for state survival, especially with two superpowers stationing a carrier group there aaaaaaaaa and I'm pretty neutral to positive about the rest, so it's got my vote.

(Otherwise, 👍 on the update)

An what happens if the EU loses and is kicked out of the area? I doubt we will get to keep the grant. Better to wait a year and see how cookie crumbles.

There's basically three outcomes to this

1) They settle into a stalemate, neither giving or taking an inch. This requires us to carefully thread the needle to maintain neutrality but tensions should lower a bit as a routine gets established.

2) They shoot at each other and one emerges the victor. If the EU wins, nothing changes and we can still get the grant next turn, maybe even get better deals as EU seeks to secure their winnings. If the US wins we basically have to start over again diplomatically and may not even keep the grant, thus making it moot.

3) One blinks and pulls away. Same situation as above, but with much less drastic results.

So let's not lock ourselves into a path when the international situation is so in flux.

The favor is a guaranteed success, we should save it for a task with DC 90+.

I'd like to investigate Ken, but I think schooling is more important atm.

The new transport ship seems useful as a diplomatic/cargo vessel, as it's less manouverable, but more spacious.

Similar to other plans, but with a punny name.

I love how this is basically "Growing Pains the Chapter".

I'll check back and vote in the morning. The choice between the Red Flag and School is a particularly difficult one.

It's not about keeping the grant, it's about giving the EU a reason to decide against "bringing freedom to a tinpot dictatorship" or even reducing the likelihood of "oh shit we accidentally misclicked on our fire order and now Little Klondike is space dust whoops".

If we can give the superpowers throwing carrier battlegroups into the region a reason to say "yeah Little K over there is a safe zone don't hit them or anything", that's exactly what we want. If they decide that we're worth investing in but we're going to stay politically independent, fine.

Like, in your three scenarios:

1. They settle into a stalemate - If the EU is not favorable to us while the US has absolutely no reason to care about us, that's not a position we want to remain in. That means we're "acceptable backstops" for EU and American fire both, and possibly "worth screwing over real quick for the EU".

2. They shoot at each other and one wins.
2a. The EU wins.
DEFINITELY DO NOT REMAIN EVEN SLIGHTLY ON EU'S BAD SIDE IMMEDIATELY BEND OVER AND SAY SIR YES SIR
2b. The US wins.
DEFINITELY DO NOT REMAIN EVEN SLIGHTLY ON US' BAD SIDE IMMEDIATELY FIND SOME VALUE THAT WE CAN TRADE FOR RETAINING POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE

3. One blinks and pulls away.
3a. The EU wins.
DEFINITELY DO NOT REMAIN EVEN SLIGHTLY ON EU'S BAD SIDE IMMEDIATELY BEND OVER AND SAY SIR YES SIR
3b. The US wins.
In the case of things not going superhot on the border, we have a few options ranging from "heeeey mr. superpower would you like to hear all about how you should guarantee our political independence for X reasons?" to "keep your head down and let the US believe that the podunk little extraction colony here has nothing to offer".

Across all cases, we benefit from having a reputation for top-class hospitals among the existing diplomatic apparatuses in the region, far more than we benefit from having a reputation as Local New Belt Zero-G Rim and Space Champions or whatever. We benefit significantly less from EU's diplo action if the US is the remaining superpower, yes, but that's why I haven't made a competing plan for the EU's attention.

Since when is anyone labeling us a despot? Relations would have to deteriotate way further before they start throwing that word around. And this is the age of the internet "accidentaly blowing an entire colony" will leak and will cause such a PR shitshow that it will make 9/11 look like a preschool disagreement. No one is going to do this, stop fear mongering.

Panicked schreeching
Dude, chill. Neither superpower is going to turn into the imperium after winning this spat. In fact chances are they will be extra nice to us to get that moral high ground and "we're the good guys!" points along with some nice propaganda.

On that same vein we lose nothing by waiting another turn for the grants. Relations are not going to nose-dive for not taking it nor are the potential increase in relations going to get lower by delaying. So there's no reason for not delaying the grants. And picking sports make us closer to NI, the one power bloc that is not going anywhere and our best ally and worst rival.

You're not thinking like we're a third-world podunk community in the middle of a conflict zone.

We are a third-world podunk community in the middle of border tensions.

Thinking that being a neutral party confers protection or that it's the age of the internet and, your direct quote, "'accidentally blowing an entire colony' will leak and cause such a PR shitshow that it will make 9/11 look like a preschool disagreement" is sufficient protection is not thinking like a third world minor power. If you want a real world example of why the given reasons are not sufficient, ask Afghani citizens how well being "neutral third party civilians at a wedding" protects them from the US and Afghani security forces writing them off as acceptable casualties, or if you want to go further, how well being a hospital backed by internationally recognized charity organizations protects you.

Anything that gives either side a specific reason to say "you guys are safe, I like you, it'll cost me significantly if I accidentally hit you" makes us safer as a state, and is thus priority one.

We are a third-world podunk community in the middle of border tensions.
We are a third-world podunk community that is predominatly formed from people that are american and european. As racist as it sounds, americans care more when it's americans that die, the same goes for europe. We also have people from everywhere so if anything happens any number of countries, which include China, can raise a mighty stink.

Also the superpowers are fighting over the blacksite so it's out of our way, unless we roll like multiple 1s we should be out of colateral damage and both will take care to keep collaretal to a minimun.

I do not believe that is sufficient protection when two carrier battlegroups are threatening to throw down. Even if the combatants cared about "minimizing collateral", the fallout from two battlegroups fighting might still have us well inside the blast zone, and I very much do not think that we are protected by either obscurity or potential negative PR consequences. If they're not minimizing collateral, we're probably very much inside the blast zone of a carrier battlegroup deciding to fight.

I think that right now we need to prioritize getting the superpowers to decide "yeah that asteroid that Little Klondike is on? That's protected, don't treat it as an acceptable backstop for your Newtonian missiles". If you disagree, that's up for the voters to decide who's right.

The blacksite is tens of thousands of kilometers away. This isn't 40k, it is extremely unlikely that anyone will take collateral damage and that's if they fight in the first place, chances are this is another game of international chicken.

I think we need to do transport systems. Sprawl is becoming a thing. I want our base to be nice and efficient.

I like both [ ] Plan: Hospital, Easing Tensions and Checking for Red Flags and [ ] Plan: 5 Tsar Resort
I think Diplomacy should be hospital concessions. With Weissmeier's nanomachines, we're well situated to stake an early and commanding presence in the medical field. Delaying talks of a sports league until after our stadium is done (embarrassing if the building failed where the talks succeeded!), and we've had a chance to build up native talent.

Engineering, definitely combined Luxury & more Living space. We're getting crowded, but let's get more bang for our buck. And definitely the stadium to provide a place for people to work frustrations out.

Internal, I'm tempted to go with the Schooling Expansion and try to sleuth things out with Ken during our personal action, but his (ex)wife is definitely ringing alarm bells. She might just be a toxic person, or she could be a legitimate threat. I could go either way on this.

Oncology Ward for sure, especially if reaching out on hospital concessions, but I think the nanoforge would be our best bet. We're going to need strong stocks of nanomachines, they're both a luxury & status item that can command huge prices, and we already know how to build them. The process just needs to be up-scaled to the commercial level. The other options are excellent investigatory science, but I think we need to follow up on investments and discoveries before moving on to the next thing.

[X] Plan: Focused Investment
-[x] [Diplomacy] Hospital concessions
-[x] [Security] Drones
-[x] [Engineering] Luxury living space + More living space (1 action, 50 DC)
-[x] [Engineering] Stadium
-[x] [Internal affairs] Schooling expansion
-[x] [Research] Nanomachine forge
--[x] Applied intelligence
-[x] [Research] Oncology ward

Great turn overall. Everything went great except the damned drones. Looking at headlines US-EU tensions are continuing to spiral but unless someone lites a fire I doubt we will see conflict break out. China is supporting to support Mars, which in turn is seemingly descending ever more into civil war. The Moon is slowly starting to arm itself and should be considered its own power reliably soon. And the satellites are seeing a mass brain drain and may end up falling under cooperate rules.

No news on the social analysis AI lawsuit but we will probably not hear anything for another few years.

I am enjoying seeing Amanda and Lena's growing relationship.

[X] Plan Futureproofing
-[X] [Diplomacy] Smooth relations with the EU
-[X] [Security] Drones
-[X] [Engineering] Transportation network
-[X] [Engineering] Church
-[X] [Internal affairs] Schooling expansion
-[X] [Research] Mineral surveys
-[X] [Research] Oncology ward
-[x] [Personal action] Write-in: Spend time with Ken
-[x] [Ship name] "Tsargo"; Tsar(monarch) + Argo(argonauts' ship)

Probably to late for a new plan but I feel the current ones are missing a few core issues. Soothing relations with the EU is easy and now that the EU has a strong military in the area essential. Normalize relations before trying to sell them something. Get the drone done. Building a transportation network is just going to become more curtail better to set it up now before our current system breaks or something goes wrong with everyone needing to spacewalk to and from work. The church is for leisure but with the idea of giving another place for spirituality so the dreamers do not have a monopoly on that. Schooling needs to be done at some point and doing it now will make Erikson happy. The mineral surveys are so we know what minerals we are dealing with. A source of iron would be great for more local construction materials but as shown with what we could do with copper and silver new minerals can open a lot of doors. The Oncology ward is for futureproofing and making hospital concession easier when we can point to a working ward instead of a theoretical one.

I like this plan the best so far.
Although I do think magnetics into solar wind capture would be better then the forge right now.

There are just so many good options to choose from! Atleast we get drones, that's been my biggest want for a while.
