Money and Power: A Xianxia Merchant Quest

Flash vote is closed. 9 for Oku, 7 for Teo, 4 for mom.

The main vote is still open. I will post Oku and Teo's advice tonight or tomorrow afternoon.

[X] Stop it now
[X] Imprison him
[X] Walking Fortresses

Huh, I'm surprised nobody voted to ask advice from all three family members. I wonder what Chachi's justification is for specifically excluding her mom, who's the social/manipulation spec? This probably doesn't bode well for their relationship. Like, just imagine her reaction when she finds out about everything after the fact.

I'm also really interested in finding out more about Tet and Mom! Seems like everyone except Chachi and Teo had sad lives.

Family Advice
As Chachi's honor guard, Oku was there for the investigations and Chachi shared her thoughts freely. She found herself trusting her violent sister. She wasn't always a pleasant person, but she was honest and forthright. It was refreshing in the deceptive world of business to have someone by her side who just said whatever she thought. As soon as Chachi shared her suspicions, Oku had a very firm opinion.

"You should kill him," Oku proclaimed with a grim nod.

"Whoa, he's our brother. I can't just…"

"Yeah, yeah, you're a sweetheart. I'll do it. Hell, I'd call it a bonus. We'll set up an ambush when he's going west to oversee this bullshit. Make it look like bandits."

The growing disquiet she'd been feeling since she'd seen the crates of blood grew into full blown nausea, "I was thinking we could just tell the authorities. They can arrest him."

"…And then kill him," Oku interrupted, "same deal but so much worse. Fucking newbie mistake right there. Yeah, fuck no. You never invite the coneheads in. The sect would move heaven and earth to keep those fuckers a region away from shit that ain't been polished to a mirror sheen. You think they'll thank you for giving them work? Thank you for smearing shit on their pretty picture of a perfect utopia? No. Take out your own trash."

"What if I just fire him instead?" Chachi really didn't want to kill her brother.

"So he can hold a grudge and fuck you over later?"

"What could he do?"

"I don't fucking know, I don't have his shitty, twisted, spiteful, dirty little brain. But trust me on this. Trust me. He will find a way to make you regret your mercy."

"Well.."

"Don't even say it. You keep him in power and he will still fuck you over. He won't be as focused on it, but he'll have more opportunities. He's a scorpion. If you hold him close, he'll sting you over and over. If you throw him away, he'll come back and sting you in your sleep. Crush the bug."

New option added after talking to Oku:
[] Have Oku kill him

When Chachi told Teo, he just looked very sad. He stared out the window for some time before replying.

"Our brother is a capable cultivator. A quick learner. He has an able wit. He can even be charming, when he wants. But he has always had a fatal flaw in his judgement. He does not… Properly gauge risk. He comes up with a scheme, and becomes engrossed in it. He delights in the possibilities. Soon, he has convinced himself that he cannot fail, entranced by the beauty of his plans. Call it an excess of optimism. Our father thought sales would be the best place for him, where we could take advantage of his skills and watch him closely for these disturbances in his thoughts. I did not think he would go so far, to endanger the whole clan. This scheme is mad, no matter how intricately he has constructed it. It would be better if the clan fell to financial ruin. At least then, the individual members under our charge could be poached by our rivals and not executed. Perhaps he has lost his grip on reality after father died. Grief can do strange things to a man, and his relationship with our father was… complex."

Teo shook his head and turned away from the window, meeting Chachi's eyes, "That is what we should tell the other branch heads when we remove him. Leave the details vague. Merely state that his grief has had a deeper impact than we expected and he has decided to take an extended leave to focus on his cultivation. We have a laboratory we keep hidden, to preserve our most secret formulae. We will transfer him there, give him useful work, and keep him under constant observation by people we trust. He can do little damage there, and if he escapes we will know instantly and be able to hunt him down. He is family, and he is, for all his faults, not a fundamentally bad man."

Chachi considered, "this expansion is so important. Who would we replace him with?"

"I will temporarily head the sales branch myself, and train his replacement."

"How?" Chachi countered, "there are only so many hours in a day."

"That is not necessarily true. In our vaults we have a dose of Perfected Clone Draught. It only works on cultivators at the Perfect level and will burn 100 years from my lifespan. It will also fundamentally damage my cultivation. But the clone produced will be a perfect copy of myself, and will last a full year before it degrades. I was already considering using the draught, now I fear we have no other choice."

"Should we go to the authorities with this?" Teo was more proper than Oku, maybe he would have a different opinion. But as soon as she asked, he shook his head sharply.

"He has not yet committed a crime. I would not see him executed for this flight of fancy. Besides, they will find other, lesser, offenses. Tax evasion for certain."

Chachi sighed, "we're committing tax evasion?"

"Every clan gets a bit creative with their book keeping. There is every incentive to do so, and we must remain competitive. I doubt we can afford to pay our back taxes at the moment. Also, you may not want to hear this…"

"Hit me. Out brother is already planning high treason."

"I suspect your mother has murdered people in the past."

"What!" Chachi gasped, "why?"

"Vengeance? Expedience? Soon after she married our father many of her former associates died under suspicious circumstances. I do not have proof, but if you allow the imperial investigators in they will use invasive techniques and tear the truth directly from her mind. No. I recommend we handle this in house."

Teo supports 'imprison him', and will help you accomplish it by transferring him to your most secure facility so he can still work while imprisoned. He is against turning him in. He is neutral on the other options, but since you've given him forewarning he will give a small bonus to any of them.

---

Mom didn't get enough support, so you don't get her plan. She would have suggested something involving his family. Neither Oku nor Teo think much about his family, so they didn't involve them.

......I'm tempted to kill him. This is a pretty dark thing here, trading with Abyssals and hiding it from everyone, even the clan head.

It's just a shame that killing people who displease you tends to create negative culture and drain you of ambitious, capable staff. Also piss off his family something fierce, probably.

[X] Have Oku kill him
[X] Imprison him

Since Oku and Teo think turning him in will be a mistake... let's not do that, okay?

However, we can't allow Tet to go free. It is just as Oku said - he is a scorpion. Keeping him or leaving him free will both get us in deep shit.

Is Teo aware we are considering having him assassinated?
if he is, what does he think of that?
if he isn't, how does chachi think he will react to such an assassination? because with him being aware of the issue, i doubt he'd think it an accident at this point.
Is oku garunteed to succeed or at least not die in the attempt because of the op armor we made her?
can we support her in the ambush to make sure nothing goes awry? as in just make sure he doesn't get away, or dies quickly and painlessly? that is a form of mercy after all.

1. Chachi thinks he would be against assassinating him and the fewer people who know, the better. He could probably figure it out after you do it, yeah. That's the cost of telling both. She thinks he'd be very distraught that you took that option over imprisonment. For all their rivalry he seems to genuinely care for his brother.

2. I won't Word of God guarantee it, but with her armor and overall combat competence Chachi is confident that Oku would succeed alone.

3. Being there personally would increase the risk of discovery because as the Matriarch you have a fairly high profile. Your favorite bodyguard isn't as closely tracked. Also Chachi would struggle to go through with it. An order is easier than holding the knife yourself.

I think solving this in a way that doesn't involve letting him stew in his indignation within reach of a cultivation lab. Sure he'll be under watch, but he's demonstrated that he's pretty good at intrigue at this point, and if he's confined he's also in a position to put all his focus on learning how to exploit his situation.

My one concern is that Oku doesn't seem subtle. How sure are we that she won't just fry his dumb ass with a black lightning bolt and call it good?

[X] Imprison him

Mk. Im not down with making an enemy of the one who is basically running the clan and teaching us how to run said clan.

Unsurprised that turn him in is a bad option in general though.

She can promise to stab him. Lots of people stab! Could be anyone!

She is not your most subtle tool, which is why she wants to do it in the woods. Maybe just burn everything after?

[X] Have Oku kill him

If the vote is close enough, can we imprison him then have Oku disappear him?

You could decide to kill him at a later point. I won't put it up for a vote on my own unless he does something else to provoke it because I'd see it as relitigating.

[X] Imprison him

Killing him would probably not work out for the best. It wouldn't go terribly, but we shouldn't kill him.

Who knows, maybe he could be useful down the line. Probably not, but he could be.

[X] Imprison him

Definitely don't want to kill him right off the bat. Is Tet's family involved?? Do they know what he's like? Can they help assuage him? They probably are the closest people to him, so I really want to talk to them first before doing anything rash.

Chachi has never met his spouse or kids. They never appear at any family functions. Other members of the clan very rarely talk about them. She knows from general osmosis that they are not in any way employed by the clan.

@Mr. Prokosch

A question about Teo. Do we know if he has family - wife (or wives), children, in-laws, or anything else - and if his family is working under or with our clan?

And about mother (whose name I completely forgot). Do we remember her ever commenting something about her past - our even possible siblings, parents or other relatives - and what she did before marrying our scum of a father?

[X] Imprison him

Sad. Killing him would be a bad look. Lowers morale, can be used a blackmail material, and since Karma is enough of a thing that high level Cultivators don't dish out swag I'm leery about killing family. Being imprisoned by your family would suck but it's not death. Doubt Tet will appreciate it much. Don't like how we're taking Teo's suggestions though... is Teo just making reasonable suggestions or are we slowly being puppeted :thonk:?

That mom had people killed doesn't surprise me. I kinda sorta don't believe in Teo's conviction that Tet's plan was doomed to fail and that Tet tends to tunnel vision. I believe in the Tet dream, the capitalist dream, free market baby:ogles:!

Oku suggesting to kill Tet kinda surprises me. I wanna know what grievances our family has with each other now. Also how many grievances were probably maybe purposefully cultivated by the previous clan head:facepalm:.

Wonder if all the family is like this. Like is our cousin in finance nursing a grudge too?

"I was thinking we could just tell the authorities. They can arrest him."

This made me laugh. Oku doling out sage wisdom. Very in line with expected Xuanhuan/Xianxia/Wuxia norms. Now we just need a dandy silk pants buying out our stocks, a young down on their luck golden finger protagonist to offend, a mysterious grandpa to guide our cultivation, and people yelling about 'face'.

Teo has two wives (polygamy is legal but monogamy is more common). Both were political/business marriages arranged by the Patriarch. They don't do any actual work for the clan besides looking after their kids. He has many, many children. He always seems to have another on the way. He also has grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most of them work for the clan in a wide variety of positions, besides a few black sheep that have gone off to make their own fortunes or joined one of the sects.

Mom is vague about her past. She grew up poor, like your father, and lived a hard life that she's glad you never had to experience. She's grateful she caught your father's eye and he decided to marry her. It upsets her to dwell long on those times, let's have some tea and talk about more pleasant things!

You've never felt a need to push her on it or talk about her behind her back.

the clone produced will be a perfect copy of myself, and will last a full year before it degrades.

Is this the nice type of clone where you get to share memories and selfhood, or the horrifying kind where you watch your twin die?
If it's the latter, I'm a bit worried that the short-lived Teo will try something desperate near the end of his life.

Our father thought sales would be the best place for him, where we could take advantage of his skills and watch him closely for these disturbances in his thoughts.

Who was watching him before, and will the same group of people be watching him in this secret lab with our secret recipes? Seems a bit suspicious. Also a secret lab just seems to be asking for a dramatic escape later.

Tet seems determined to show he has plans better than Teo's, maybe we should give him a chance to prove that.
[X] Stop it now
-[X] Tet, You want me to consider your plans over Teo's? Show me something that doesn't risk the clan, and I will seriously consider it.

1. It's the kind where you watch yourself die. Not a big seller but he thinks it will be fine.

2. If 'stop it' wins I'll make sure to include asking about any other, less dangerous, plans.

Hahaha, Teo smashes frequently and often! Feels so weird, but plausible. I wonder how his wives feel about the many pregnancies? Neither had love matches, and ensuring the continuation of the lineage doesn't need that many kids. Are the three of them just big family people? Can't imagine Teo spends a ton of time with his spouses or descendants, though.

Yeah, I figure most of her past associates were people she wanted revenge on, or the like. Not sure how she met the Patriarch, but she must've been significantly more hardscrabble and rough, I'm thinking.
