These Grim Days (RWBY)

[X] Plan Child of Light
- [X] Leaving this Grimm to its own devices is dangerous for the settlement nearby, even if staying behind to deal with the damn monster runs against the very last promise you made to your fallen mentor. The idea that innocent people could be killed by this thing boils your blood.
-- [X] Use Tiwaz in your spear before facing it, if you're going to do this, you're going to do it well.
-- [X] Attempt to use Thurisaz, if it doesn't work, then get ready to fight.
--- [X] If it does works, then either make the Grimm kill itself or launch it into your hunters direction, depending on how close they are.
-- [X] If things start looking bad, get ready to use Flare on the Grimm, if he's still capable of beating you, then get ready to run, you're not going to lose your life against a Grimm just like that.
- [X] Something was valuable to the bastards who wanted you to clear out this place, take a look around and take some pictures with your scroll to reference if you find anything interesting.
- [X] There was no way you were going to just leave the old man's body rotting in this crumbling ruin. You needed to take care of it; you wouldn't be able forgive yourself otherwise.
- [X] Yes, a weapons story is formed by the name you give it. How can you make a weapon legendary without a name to call it?

-[X] You need to get out of this ruin. There's nothing left for you here. As if the Grimm in front of you surviving a full blast of purifying silver light wasn't motivation enough, Mercenaries are on your tail, and you don't have a clear picture of their capabilities other than their grunts are just below a combat school graduates quality of fighting.
-[X] You need to shore up your provisions just in case you can't get transport of some kind from the settlement. It turns your stomach to loot bodies like a Mistralian bandit, but you don't really have the luxury to ignore anything useful if you're on the run.
-[X] There was no way you were going to just leave the old man's body rotting in this crumbling ruin. You needed to take care of it; you wouldn't be able forgive yourself otherwise.
-[X] No, it never felt like the right time whenever you were asked about it. Weren't weapons supposed to be legendary before you named them?

BTW, @UNKNOWN01, if you want a name for our weapon that isn't just the name for Cu Chulainn's spear, here are some alternatives.

Red Branch: Is more evocative of our weapon's appearance since it's forged from Fire Dust. Is also the name of the order of knights Cu Chulainn was part of.

Coinchenn: The name of the sea monster whose bones were used to create Gae Bolg.

While I believe that they are good names, the thing is that Gàe Bolg is seen as a really important piece of Cù's legend, so even if I had any other name available, I would still choose Gàe Bolg.

If it were a green spear like in the Image, though, then I would have chosen Coinchenn... to use that weapon to make Gàe Bolg in the future, as a mythological call-back!

Fair. How do the Aura Runes work by the way, @jakjjjj? I thought they would have to be placed on objects to actually exert their effect but from how the Interlude protrays Algiz, you just trace it in the air and then the effect just happens?

Also, crap. If using our Semblance requires a free hand and actually tracing the rune, it's somewhat counteractive towards our weapon since spears are meant to be wielded in both hands.

Well, in the Character Sheet it specifically says that it can be traced both in the air or in a surface.

And for your other thing... @jakjjjj , would it be possible for us to engrave our runes into objects (like clothes, weapons, miscellaneous...) to be able to call upon then in the moment?

Ah, neat. I wonder if there's any advantage to tracing the runes directly onto things as opposed to the air?

My prior mental image of we'd use the Runes in combat is that we'd trace the Runes in the air before sort of stamping them directly onto our target with the palm of our hand. I wonder if that's at all possible. Hmm... Probably would require more points into Int, I'd imagine.

I think that doing it directly causes the effect of the rune to concentrate in the object in question (like tracing Tiwaz into Gàe Bolg to make it more powerful).

I believe that kind of actions (using our runes directly in our rival during combat) is going to take some practice, but it's still achievable!

No doubt. I looked up some videos of spear fighting, and using it one handed is possible. It just limits most our options of attack to a simple short thrust. Plus, thanks to the Gravity crystal, throwing our weapon is a much more viable strategy anyway.

I think if we get any opportunity to increase our stats, we shouldn't put any more points into Int until we're in a safe location. Survivability is our highest priority at the moment after all.

I was thinking that we could use our spear as a medium to trace the runes. The interlude was from when we were a kid after all. It is quite likely we learned to use the spear to quickly trace our runes later. It's not like they're particularly difficult. All require just a few strokes at most. If we didn't learn to do this then it either isn't possible or we neglected an important factor when training. Considering our character isn't dumb and that we have a competent teacher though I don't think the latter is likely.

Setanta is perfectly capable of tracing runes with his spear. Using his semblance, he needs to concentrate his aura to the portion of his body he is using to draw the rune. He can use his spear similarly like a conduit for aura to do the same thing he would be able to do with his body. Technically, he can use his feet to do it as well, although it would take some pretty controlled and measured movements. Using his semblance is ultimately an exercise in aura manipulation, and while the comparison to the Schnee glyphs can be made, it is really difficult for Setanta to form completed runes in the air spontaneously like you might see Weiss do. Its not impossible, but his semblance just pushes back against it, further practice and experience with his semblance will have to be made to discover a way to do that.

Bleak Comings 1.4 Part 1

Far east of Argus, Present Day

[X] There was no way you were going to just leave the old man's body rotting in this crumbling ruin. You needed to take care of it; you wouldn't be able forgive yourself otherwise.

Taking a moment to inhale a calming breath, you exhaled sharply. Trying to set your storm of emotions to the side, you collected yourself as best as you could.

The first thing that should, no, needed to be done for the Old Man was to bury his body. It felt wrong, in a way, to be rushed like this. You thought that for someone who had done so much for you, some kind of ceremony needed to be done. You owed him everything; he didn't need take responsibility for you like he did. Without him, you'd just be another orphan living on the pity and charity of the adults who felt sorry for you.

A little voice whispered in your head that you were already failing him again. You were forced to watch him, and the two men that accosted him, fight to the death. All that, while he used his chains to bludgeon the fodder that whittled away at him enough to break his aura. The impalement that sent him to the afterlife played over, and over in your head.

You mentally kicked that whisper with a surge of anger, a frustrated hand brushing your wild, blue hair back. You weren't failing him, you'd never. By staying alive, you were doing exactly what he wanted you to do.

Your hands needed to be free.

Flicking a lever switch on your spear, you slid the lower haft half up the length of the weapon and lock it in place. You stowed it at an angle on your back with a casual motion; it wasn't anything like a real holdout modification could really do to make it easier to carry it around but it did the job fine.

You walked back to your fallen mentor. Kneeling down, you carefully lifted his broken body into a carry with both arms. Plated feet kicking loose stones, your metallic footsteps echoed in the large empty space of the crumbling hall as you moved. The swept snow at the entrance crunched audibly when you passed through the archway outside.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A mound of dirt was steadily building with every heave of your arms. A bigger pile of snow was under it. An angry heat filled your muscles with the drive you needed to push through this. Using the weathered entrenching tool that he kept on the side of his travel ruck, you dug. Aura made doing this much quicker than you initially thought. You broke into the soil through the packed snow in just mere minutes. With every swing of the shovel, every upward arc you used to shift more of the frozen ground from below, the shock from earlier cleared. Now, when you jabbed the earth, it felt more like you were stabbing yourself with your own spear instead. The realization that you were digging a shallow grave had begun to sink in the back of your mind.

You didn't realize, at first, that you were digging to bury more than just The Old Man; it was your innocence too. Unbidden, silent tears bud at the edges of your eyes that you blinked away, shutting off a faint glow of soft silver that swirled on your irises.

It was not too long until you were finished, the urge to just keep digging almost overpowering your good sense before you reminded yourself once more you were on a clock. You wanted to go through the ruins before the Grimm's prison was too unsound to restrain it any longer. Then you'll deal with it. You weren't going to let that thing survive past today. You wiped the rapidly chilling sweat from your brow. Stepping away from the fully dug grave, you turn you look one last time at your mentor. (Father)

His pale face was relaxed, the stress was gone from his expression. The silvering full head of hair on top of his head had mostly taken over his natural black now. You used one hand to close his eyes, a shudder ran through your body as you choke. You were trying to be stoic, you really were, but this was all so fast.

You didn't want him to go... Because if he was gone, then this chapter of your life was over. The chapter where you had a family, even if only it was as big as one person. There wouldn't be another time where you irritated him with your stubbornness and he cuffed you upside the head like a pup. There wouldn't be another spar where you were excited to show another aspect to your semblance you discovered to him. No more quiet nights where you leaned into the protective warmth of his presence.

It was all gone. And, you were alone again.

There was some part of you that wanted to hug the dead man below you and shout and scream your rage. To cling on and close your eyes and pretend that none of this happened, and it was all just a bad dream. Except, it wasn't a dream. You could never be so lucky.

You took something to remember him by. He'll never really be here with you again on Remnant, but at least you could keep some part of him. So, he will be always with you.

In your sorrow, you took something to remember the Old Man by, what was it?
-[] His Chain Gauntlets, he never taught you how to use them. But, maybe you could do something with them.
-[] The medallion on his neck that you never saw him without for as long as you knew him. An engraved image of some kind of flower being clasped by fingers. A faint glimmer of green and red shimmered on its pearl white surface when you touched it, but you're sure that was just the trick of the eye.
-[] The black cloak that he wore that somehow was not even stained by his blood. He never went on a mission without it. It was part of his fighting technique, using it to cover himself from elemental attacks.

Getting a hold of yourself, you lifted him up and lowered him tenderly into the hole you dug. Your heart ached while you packed the soil back on top of him, but it was settling in onto a dull throb. Finally finished. You step back and stared at the freshly unearthed patch of dirt that rested innocently under you

You felt like you had to say something, anything. This was your goodbye, and you didn't know what words to use.
-[] Write-in
-[] You stayed quiet.

You turned back to the ruined temple and started walking back. The sun was still high in the sky, and there was still work to do.

-[X] You did better than anyone else by me, and I'll make sure to tell your story, so it's never forgotten. I certainly won't forget. Thanks Old Man."

-[X] ...Heh, you know what Old Man? I... I am not good for these kind of things, I know you've always said that my ability to put my feet in my mouth was something worth of legends, 'If there's one thing anyone will make a legend of about you, it will be about your legendary incapability to speak to people, kid', heh I guess you're right, here I am, taliking to you, and I don't even know what to say!
--
[X] But if there's one thing I should say... is "I'm sorry".
---[X] I'm sorry that I could never tell you... you a father to me, and I don't care for what anyone else says, you were my father! And... And I'm sorry I couldn't tell you in the face sooner... you took a brat homeless and without family... and you gave him a one... And for that, I... I thank you, Father.

----[X] ...I hope that, wherever you are now, is a better place than this... Goodbye, Dad, I'll have to go alone for now, but I wont forget the good times, I can promise you that.

PD: About the updates issue, we barely have even started with the quest so, for now, I have no opinion about this, maybe later, but I'll stand by and watch how this unfolds. Great update, by the way, I can feel the emotion there :D!

EDIT: Changed vote guys!

Chain Gauntlets- backup weapon
The medallion- what use would this serve
The black cloak- extra armor

Thanks for the feedback!

I'll go ahead close the vote for this tomorrow at 3:00PM PST and get started on another update by then.

@UNKNOWN01 I like the final words you wrote but I think I prefer the medallion to the cloak. Not because its a mystery box but because I think it was more important to him than the cloak as it said he never took it off.. Would you mind if I made a new plan with your final words but the medallion instead of the cloak?

There is really no need for words
