If we research the ship, we can maybe -hopefully- get ourselves our own space-capable craft.
You misunderstand.
We're not trying to get a ship, we're trying to become space-capable trees.

Anyone else concerned that if we focus on forest growth and growing collector trees too much we'll lose sight of the bigger picture and won't survive long enough to make use of the bonus resources?
All the more reason to contact the first ship, they are the most likely to try and deal with us rather than raid and destroy us if they know we can speak to them.Somewhat worried that we're only going to encourage them to bring bigger guns the more we succeed.

And if we research their ship we can also have the mean's to suddenly have mobility be a thing!
There are 47 minds, and we had a high turnout in the first vote so we had people sticking around. As it is right now I am helping on finishing up the soothe tree but if we have enough minds there and not enough on contacting the ship I would be willing to switch. However with all of our root trees we can still pump out 1 or 2 specials in addition to working on worm and collector trees. Those specials sometimes open up new actions for us or provide other benefits....Honestly, tomorrow if the Minds don't start investing into contacting the ship, I'm going to switch my [Action] from the shield to that, inefficient though it is since I'm a Heart.
It's a dangled "this option opens up plot" hook! Right now we don't know anything about the broader context, and that action is our easiest way to change it. Researching new trees our Roots don't have the resources to build in great numbers yet is a much less good use of our Mind Trees than getting that contact action done, or the research action that will let us figure out how to spread beyond here. But we've only got four trees using their [Action] on contacting the ship and two using it on researching it; we need six more successes on contact and four more successes on researching the ship, so even assuming all those trees are Mind Trees, the odds are very against it at the moment.
The issue is that we need to research the special tree, and then we need to grow the special tree in enough numbers to matter -- at least a 2 turn delay, whereas contacting is an action that opens up a new vote (or a mini-turn) immediately. I really don't think we want to lollygag on finding out what that option locks, especially when the Heart Trees have really nothing to do but take defensive actions: either shielding us (preventing people from poking at us in the first place) or storing resources (banking successes against future damage). We don't really need new defense at this time, not with our luck in rolling four Magnetic Trees. There are 47 minds, and we had a high turnout in the first vote so we had people sticking around. Soothing tree though has the benefit of being an offensive calm that flows into communication if not taken. Reflecting is a damage reduction and also useful for protecting ourselves which would put those two at top priority for mind trees this turn.
The problem is we just had hostile jump in system so delaying on getting new defense/offense options means we are stuck in a purely reactionary mode with only shielding. Soothing tree at least means we only have to endure next turn before we can go on the offense and drive the new hostiles off. It also means we can protect peaceful contacts so that we can learn from them but until we get offensive capability learning from the research ship and similar contacts is limited to relying on no hostiles showing up.The issue is that we need to research the special tree, and then we need to grow the special tree in enough numbers to matter -- at least a 2 turn delay, whereas contacting is an action that opens up a new vote (or a mini-turn) immediately. Currently we've got seven trees researching the Soothing Tree, and we've already got four successes into it. Assuming all those trees are Mind, we're very likely to successfully research it this turn. But we're behind on both the ship contact and the ship research, and that really concerns me.
