Wisdom in War

Word Count ~2148

I was doing some reading on the Second Punic War at the time and it inspired this I wrote this (and a second omake I'll post in a minute). I didn't want to necro the thread since it had been inactive for so long so I PMd it to Telamon in the hopes it might inspire an update... no such luck, unfortunately. But I'm happy to post it now and I hope at least a few of you enjoy it.

Quintus Cingulatus Atellus thinks on war, and men, and how sometimes, the best way to fight is not to fight at all. It is an insight few men reach, even well into old age. Minerva smiles upon her champion child.

The Nature of the Legions, the Forging of a Soldier

Word Count ~663

A short one this time. Written because the Legions, and how they changed the men who served in them, are an utterly fascinating topic.

...And because I want the Soldier Trait Atellus' father has.

As the young Tribune is learning slowly but surely, the legions change a man for life. Once a soldier of Rome, you are always a soldier of Rome. And to be Roman is to be great.

25 XP to all military skills.

[X] Plan Preparing for Maeander
[X] Reward the Officers: The camp officers, the prefects, even the other Tribunes -- these men have served finely and with distinction these last months, from Samnium to Sardis, and deserve reward. The officers range from plebian to patrician, so there is no class divide here, merely one of rank. There are, you are well aware, men with decades of seniority in the legions who, unlike the centurions Pompolussa and Carcellus, do not appreciate being placed under boys years their younger. Some coin might soften their harsh feelings on the matter, you imagine
[X] Run Drills: Over the next few days, you gather with Cassianus in the dim pre-dawn outside the city to run your troops through your paces. It would do well for you and him to be better prepared to work together, and for your troops to be well-oiled come the fight.
[X] Reconnoiter The Battlefield: Though Marius is no doubt doing this himself, you send some of your fastest riders to ride around the likeliest crossing points of the Maeander and get the lay of the land. In a pitched battle like the one which likely awaits you, knowing the lay of the land might be very valuable.
[X] Ask Around: You send some troops to interview the local villages and towns about the general layout of the lands near the Maeander for anything which could be advantageous or useful in the coming fight.

Figured I'd throw my own hat into the ring and make a plan. I'd prefer not to pick a side when it comes to rewarding our legion, we'll have a big chance of failing at rewarding equally but our diplomacy can soothe most of the feathers that will be ruffled. For the most part, my plan just focuses on preparing for our first huge battle. I chose reconnoiter the battlefield just in case we find an advantageous position that somehow gets missed, running drills to further prepare the legion and get the cohorts legions more experience, asking around for the hopes of the locals helping us out and rest to make sure Atellus is in tip top shape for the coming battle. This one will be a big one, so I don't want to mess up our morale with a poor augury from our priests.

nvm, got rid of rest.

[] Plan Preparing for Maeander
[] Reward the Legion: You try to reward everyone equally, but there is not an equal amount to go around. Some will get more and some will get less, it is the way of things. You will try to use your skill for coin to apportion things as fairly as possible, and if that fails, perhaps your charisma will be enough to paper over the cracks.

[] Rest: You have been marching for days, and the life of a tribune is busy and hectic. It dawns upon you that you have not had a proper night's sleep in quite a while. Perhaps you should get one for a few days.

First we can only do 3 actions so you have 2 more actions than we can use. Second our stewardship is 4 we will mess up rewarding the legion. We get a malus to rewarding the legion.

Noted but I have one more action that I can use, not two. I understand that we'll get a malus to rewarding the legion but our diplomacy should be enough to soothe tempers.

-[x] Run Cavalry Drills: The cavalry is exactly as important as they pride themselves on being. The deadly italic horsemen have won many a battle that seemed lost, and as your cavalry mostly sat out the battle at Sardis, you want them in particular well-oiled and ready for the coming combat. As well, it never hurts to ingratiate yourself with the Cavalry prefect, Dolabella.
-[x] Requisition Rations: It might cost some silver out of your own pocket, but you pay to have enough food gathered out of the city to treat your men to a better breakfast than to which they are generally used. They might die soon, after all.

Ok I think we need to reward the officers since it is our least dangerous option. We should not hope to rely that we can be diplomatic enough to smooth things over. Running infantry and Calvary drills to make sure we are at our best. Also our Calvary is headed by Sulla's cousin we should get to know him better. One last meal since this will be bloody.

Looks like Nurgle beat me to posting by a minute.

We've been put in an awful spot here. As I noted previously (and as is pointed out in the option) the men already expect this money and probably some of them will have already spent it. So while we can hopefully get away with not giving it to them, we definitely can't just give it to the Equites - as simple as that would make things - because that would be going directly against what Marius said in his speech. It's somewhat tempting to try and spread it evenly but we roll a -2 on Stewardship actions and our Charisma isn't incredible either, it just feels like something destined to go wrong.

I did consider just giving it to the men as they expect but I think we can get away with favouring the officers. It's not unusual for the officers in the army to be rewarded more greatly than the common soldier, and since they cross the class and political divide the men should accept it. It also helps close off a weakness for us, many of the more prominent officers are on our side already, and we just promoted a batch of new Centurions, but a lot of them are still unknown to us and we need their support.

As for the battle preparation actions, as much as I would love to take a rest I'm not sure it's justifiable. The opportunity cost is simply too high, it might make Atellus feel a little better but balance that against doing something that benefits the whole legion, more than 5000 men... I just don't see it as being more worthwhile.

So I'm going for Run Drills for reasons that should be obvious, but too many of our cohorts are still average and we need to ensure we can work as well with Cassianus as possible. Next Run Cavalry Drills, they haven't been involved in the recent battles and we do need them in good shape. But more importantly, we need to spend time with them and make sure we keep them onside and make sure that this conflict doesn't boil over. We just spent a turn trying to patch things up and Marius has gone and fucked it again, so we need to get back to work.

Lastly, good food. It's not simply a matter of the men being thankful, although that's a nice benefit, it honestly cannot be understated just how beneficial a properly good meal can be before a battle. It makes us favouring the Officers easier to swallow and puts them in a better physical and mental condition for the battle. I honestly don't think the small amount of scouting we can do compared to Marius would be a greater benefit.

-[X] Assemble The Officers: Your legion's lifeblood is it's centurions, it's prefects and it's soldiers. Making sure they work well together and can improvise in the heat of battle is important. You will do something unorthodox and spend several hours a day drilling the officers alone.

Running Drills is an obvious pick. Then taking assemble the officers and reconnoiter the battlefield, with rewards going to the officers. Logic is that the officers will be more inclined to put in work with the drills we run with them, and that we might be able to use the info we gain from our recon on the likely battlefield to assist Atellus in running drills that are most likely to help in the coming battle, in addition to just getting a lay of the land.

While I would prefer appeasing our Nobles in the ranks appeasing the officers to be loyal to us works as well.

I figure that giving the loot to the officers is better since both sides of the class divide are apart of them, further reinforcing our "Blood on the battlefield over the waters of the womb" mantra

(I say I cause I don't want to speak for the others)

I can see that and I respect it I just worry us alienating anyone group has potential long term consequences that we can't afford right now. That's why I want to appease the Nobles that way we don't lose any valuable potential allies long term.

I think running two drill actions when Atellus already notably lacks rest is a good way of getting "Tired" malus for the battle, which would negatively affect pretty much everything, not in the least personal combat rolls we need to succeed in to not die.

Been following this quest since before I had an account. Happy to start participating.

I received the notification of the quest's update just as I've been listening to Gore Vidal's Creation novel, specifically to the chapter about the burning of Sardis by the Greeks in the Greco-Persian Wars. Must be a good augury.

[x] Bring balance to the (Roman) Force:

[x] Reconnoiter The Battlefield

Being stuck in the middle of Asia is the worst possible time and place for us to have a have a potential rebellion of disgruntled cavalrymen in our hands. Better be safe than sorry. Besides, getting the knightly Dolabella on our side won't hurt in the long run, either - whatever populist ambitions we might hold close to our chest, officially we are still running with the optimates.

Likewise, we are in preparation for a major battle decided by men more experienced than us and by factors out of our hands. I think, it would be better to spend time quietly upping our men's XP and getting the lay of the land (quite literally), which would also tie in nicely with all our cavalry-related efforts.
