Branching Paths.8/Setup-2.1
You prayed to the skies, hoping for divine intervention - if gods truly did exist. However, no matter how desperate your prayers were, there was no answer. No mystical voice to guide your next moments, nor any miraculous instance that changed the threads of fate. There was just you, and the unfairness of war.

The footsteps came to a halt, as an armed man appeared before you, just outside the remnants of Maria's house. With a uniform painted in various shades of green, along with a silver crest bearing the face of a roaring lion, it was clear to you that this man was not of the Vanatean military - he was a Grawenian soldier.

The soldier gazed at you with a surprised look, and swiftly charged as he drew out his sword with a tightened grip. You tried to avoid the incoming attack, but to no avail - the blade has already made contact with you, and the momentum was enough to pierce through the flesh of your chest. Though you experienced unbearable pain, you could not scream, nor could you voice out your suffering. You fell to the ground with a loud thud as your breathing grew slow and heavy, whilst your sight began to be hazy.

You were unable to move as the blood dripping from your wound gradually turned into a small puddle beneath you.

"Sorry kid.", the soldier sighed as he left and went onward to clear the town's premises. "But this is war. And for someone like me, following orders is the only way to survive."

With great pain you turn you head, seeing that Maria had been left unharmed - although she remained unconscious, with her faint breathing. You remembered that you still had to get her to safety somehow, but your strength was wavering.

Your last memory of your friend was with a disagreement, and you couldn't even celebrate your mother's birthday. You were unable to save a single one of the people that mattered to you. Tears trickled down your cheeks, slowly merging into the sticky, red puddle beneath you as you came to realize that if you had just done things differently, then all this might not have happened. As the peace-inclined person that you were, you blamed this tragedy onto yourself, ignoring the fact that the world does not revolve around you.

As your sight darkened, you heard footsteps rushing, eventually stopping just before you.

"...o. ...eo! ...Leo!", it was Calvin's voice. "Wake up, man!"

You sense something shaking for a while, but it eventually stops.

"Come on, Leo...", he whimpered. "...not you too, man."

As you drew your last breath, you uttered the missing portions of a name - belonging to someone who could still be saved.

It seems that your story ends here. And just like you lived, it will exist without being acknowledged. Not remembered, but not forgotten as well.

The war between the three nations rages on, as an ancient evil resurfaces from the shadows. The world is gradually heading to its ruin, as the present mimics the past. Amidst all the chaos, stories are made - some forgotten, some remembered, and others simply existing without being known.

One of such stories belongs to you. What happens to it will rely upon your choices. Will it be remembered as a story of heroic triumph and glory? Will it be forgotten though the passage of time, left as a fading record of the past? Or will it simply exist in obscurity?

But most importantly, in your story, will you be able survive?

Choose a nation to align yourself with:

[] The Kingdom of Grawen
details
Currently under the reign of King Orvil. Inhabitants are called Grawenians.

The Grawen Kingdom is located on the far northwestern sections of the world. There, the terrain is mostly coarse, with very little amount of areas suitable for civilizations. In return for those, the kingdom is given the advantage of having mountain ranges as walls from unwanted intruders. It is common practice for Grawenians to fight for sport, since the kingdom's pride is in showing utmost superior physical prowess. Mainly, that is due to them adapting to their harsh environment, allowing the inhabitants to be more physically fit and gain more endurance, compared to the rest of the world. The Grawen Kingdom's military is mostly comprised of infantry, with very few mounted soldiers. Still, they prove to be a formidable force with the unrivaled camaraderie that the soldiers develop in their time of service.

[] The Vanate Empire
details
Currently under the reign of Emperor Veldar. Inhabitants are called Vanateans.

The Vanate Empire is located on the northeastern part of the world, with most of the lands under its reign. Vanate's landscape is vast, and mostly comprised of plains and small hills, with a fair share of a few mountains and forestry. Due to its massive and ever-expanding size, the economy of the nation is booming. Various settlements are continuously being placed all around the Empire's reach, and several renowned establishments have made Vanate their place to stay. Unlike Grawen, the Empire has no protective landscape, but with the abundance of pegasi and wyverns in the vicinity, the nation fears no one due to their aerial superiority. The Vanate Empire's army, otherwise known as the Crimson Legion, is mostly comprised of soldiers and their trusty flying mounts. The sheer number of this military force is enough to intimidate even the bravest, let alone the might of their aerial strikes. Due to the large number, the army is divided into a number of troops and squads which act on different missions.

[] The Auranian Theocracy
details
Currently under the reign of High Priestess Lutia and Archbishop Deyron. Inhabitants are called Auranites.

The Auranian Theocracy is located on the southern hemisphere of the world, having an entire continent all to the nation. However, due to their peaceful demeanor, their original territory has been reduced by more ambitious nations such as Grawen and Vanate. Still, they hold a fair amount of land, covered in precious resources with varied forms of nature and wildlife unlike Grawen's mountainous regions and Vanate's plains. The only reason why the nation remains untouched is due to its religious influence. This nation is the center of religion - it holds the sacred relics of this divine worship, the priests and priestesses are trained in here, and a whole lot more. Basically, anything related to the religion of the Light Spirit, the Auranian Theocracy has something to do with it. The Auranian Theocracy has its own military for its own protection as well. However, when compared to the two other nations, their military is not much of a threat. Granted, there are a few skilled individuals under their rule, but the nation's mannerisms pretty much limits the potential of this nation, aside from the evident magical prowess of the folk.

Well, that was... grim, for a lack of a better word. Is there a chance for reincarnation? Or is that it? Quite a downer ending for a prologue(?), I assume

[X] The Auranian Theocracy

I wonder if we can play as Calvin. He kinda sounds like protagonist material to me.
It's possible, but you'll have to be aligned to Vanate in order to do so.

No reincarnation, sadly. That is it for Leo's story - could have gone to great lengths, but, alas, the rolls made weren't quite cooperative.

details
A fresh face in the Crimson Legion. You have gone through the proper training and has been assigned your own mount, but you still have much to learn in the field.
Starts with two levels in [Riding], a free mount of choice (wyvern/pegasus), and a well-rounded stat base.

[] A highborn.
details
A noble of the Vanate Empire. You are learned and possess power, but only within the confines of your fiefdom.
Starts with two levels in [Charisma], a retainer, and a standard stat base.

[] A commoner.
details
An ordinary Vanatean. You are much like the rest of the citizens, and as you have started from the bottom, there is no other way to go but upwards.
Starts with a low stat base, and bonus points to be allocated to a desired stat/s.

[X] Maria (Skips every other option below. Comes with pre-determined stats and skills.)

I want either Calvin or Maria to win. Leo's story must continue through them. A person is not dead as long as he is remembered!

...Welp.
This is why I wanted stealth
To be perfectly fair, there's no particular reason to think stealth wouldn't have required dice rolls either. As the option noted, we weren't in a great position for that either. Against a Nat 1 I imagine all the options would have ended with our death unless we have confirmation one of the others would have gotten us through that without a roll.

But I'll carry the weight of that loss.

[X] Maria (Skips every other option below. Comes with pre-determined stats and skills.)

Right into going full Avenger.

The best option at that time would be to charge and try to disarm the soldier. Calvin would have arrived mid-struggle and helped Leo out - possibly having the three of them escape the town and live long enough for the imperial troops to come to the rescue.

The two other options were to roll and hope to not get a Nat 1.

Huh. Well we made our choice not knowing the results.

I feel like Calvin will be the one that have to rein Maria from trying to get revenge and getting herself killed in the process for the sake of not making Leo's sacrifice be in vain. Also does Calvin have trauma for coming late for the rescue.
