I mean, ace status isn't something you get solely based on skill. If anything the title only indicates skill indirectly; generally it just means you've killed a certain number of enemy combatants as a pilot. We aren't an ace. We can probably become one (presuming the QM meant it in that sense and wasn't using it as a stand in for describing our skill level).

Yeah, basically. There is "ace" as it's been used historically, then there's ace as it's used as a genre convention. Actual ace pilots in mecha anime do usually have a kill count to their name to earn the title, but basically the archetype is much more around unique skills and customised equipment that sets them apart from the common rabble. Some pilots are blessed to be deeply average instead.
