Hangar Queens: A Modern Military Mecha Satire

*headtilt*

Um...what?
I don't claim to know radar but the notion I'm getting is sort of a 'gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes back.' logic-you can look but you will be seen looking.
Big ass ECM/ESSM emitters that blind the enemy, light up the enemy, and lets enemy shoot home on jam at you.
Basically this. They'd be less able to directly target you but they'd know it was you doing it and so focus on you above others. Or something. I am assured that this is how it works. I am assured of this.

But I think I'll just go with the QM wand option, much easier and it means I don't have to rewrite anything.

Anyway I really need to stop posting, it's 2 AM already and I need to get up for work tomorrow. >_<

[X] Refactoring the fuel management program.

End the complaints about fuel budgeting!

(lol no)

More interactions with Antonia Clarke please! That was gold.

[X] Replacing the AESA radar with a new and improved model.

Calling it now. If we do this, we'll get in trouble for not using enough fuel.
Fuel is flammable and having more flammable stuff on you while being shot at is ungoodly bellyfeels territory.

It also mentioned load balancing. Expect the mecha to be harder to maneuver with fuel sloshing about in unaccounted for ways while moving about.

@Tayta Malikai

The reworked new model AESA should just be "strap on a new-ish mark LITENING pod", tying up a equipment hardpoint and increasing our EM signature but giving enhanced ELINT/EW and sensor capability.

(Technically the F-35 has the equivalent of one built in, but the advantage of a pod is you can swap it out for a better one. Which is not to say the one we acquire is actually an upgrade, but more sensors equals better, right? right!)

The lack of distraction is welcome, but the lack of any appreciable progress debugging your own Q-35A's fire control and sensor software is not. Even when you're engaged in more physical maintenance tasks alongside SSgt Perrier and his crew, your mind is always spinning through code, attempting to resolve the one true configuration that will magically make your radar and thermals work again. So far, your mind's resolution is about as sharp as your mecha's.
My money's on shitty drivers.
Like, geez you got ONE job, and thats to provide usable data out of the bits where you said they're coming out and since its all proprietary you can't do fuck all to fix it once you identify the problem unless you want to hack a job to make it work right now except once they fix the bug and all the outputs are coming out of the right holes your fix is now the new Problem.

So like you got a hugeass spotlight, you sweep it around and see what you can light up and anyone looking at you at the time you're looking at them goes "OH GOD MY EYES MY EYES AAAAAAA"

The more we can stay airborne, the less Humvees we will find ourselves stepping on.

"What a shame," Antonia remarks as you retreat. "And here I had all this free candy I was gonna give you."
Is her mech white coloured by chance. :thonk:

One day, you climb out of your mecha after another marathon debugging session
Yes, debugging. That's one of the Ds in D&D stands for.

"New York State. Buffalo, to be exact. The place where Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo."
Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo Buffalo?
a batch of cookies. "Would you like one?"

"Yes, please!" The prospect of sugar overrides all rationality.
I see how it is.

Buster is gonna turncoat as soon as anyone from another side offers him a truckload of cookies.

This quest is Top Gun but insane, pretty well done. (I haven't ever watched Top Gun)

[X] Installing the newest generation of active protection system.

Radar? Pfft doing your own recon? This is AMERICA son! Leave that for the MQ-9s and double chair force drone operators.

Besides, fixing our own TA systems to then fuck them up right after again sounds very IC.

To elaborate a little on @Jonen C 's post: ECM pods work by throwing up a lot of radio interference to obscure your position and make it harder for an enemy missile to lock onto you, and make it more likely that a locked missile loses its lock. However, the signal pattern emitted is distinct, so if you turn it on people can "hear" the "noise" and realise "oh shit the Americans are coming." There are also missiles designed to go after that actively emitting signal pattern, hence the term "home on jam".

The future, which is AESA ECM, is to use radio waves to tai chi away the radar beams of search radars while being more subtle about it, but that's just cheating and hax the way AESA radars are cheating and hax. Notably, that's how the ECM on the F-35 and Rafale are suppsoed to work :V

Basically, radar is a flashlight, lights up the dark to let you see but the enemy can see you from where you can't see them and they can shoot at the light.

ECM is like a strobelight that blinds anyone looking at it, but it doesn't prevent them from firing at the source of the light.

State of the art radar the sensor is basically like a starlight nvg that can see stuff based on the light available from other sources.

And state of the art ECM blinds you with light just outside the visual spectrum... Inexact analogy, since you wouldn't even know you're being jammed with the ecm, but in either case you can't tell where the jammer is.

I'm glad to see people are enjoying the characters. I wasn't so sure how someone like Antonia Clarke would be received.

I also see we have another voting landslide for Replacing the (non-)AESA radar. I doubt there'll be another miraculous near-reversal like before, but since I obviously (?) can't work on the update while I'm asleep, I'll leave it open for another 9 hours.

Out of curiosity, can I ask what led you guys to so heavily favour this option in particular? Is it the increase in protagonist power? The two green plus signs compared to all the others' one? The indirect penalty compared to the others' more direct ones? The assumption that being at the rear will mitigate the penalty by forcing the enemy to go through the rest of your squadron? Something else?

Sadly for the meme-lovers among us, it's painted in camouflage like everyone else's.

Besides, if Antonia's mecha was white, she'd soon figure out a way to get it really dirty.

It's just like Dystopia Quest all over again :o

I feel like that's high praise, coming from you. Thanks.

I technically have watched Top Gun, but it was nearly a decade ago and I forgot all the details.

Let's see... off the top of my head, I remember Tom Cruise buzzing some general's daughter, giving the finger to Chinese MiG pilots, something about a risky carrier landing at night, "you do not salute her", Tom Cruise's wingman getting killed in an accident, Tom Cruise getting it on with his instructor, and finally Tom Cruise going out into 4realz air-to-air combat with the Chinese. That about sum it up?

Also, can't wait to see the sequel. Guy is a miracle movie-making machine.

I'll be honest, half the reason I'm writing this quest is to bait people with more military knowledge than me into posting technical commentary all over the thread. :V

Also, some bad news everyone. I'm gonna be going on a trip for three weeks, so writing time will likely be limited and uncertain during that time. Ideally I'd like to get the next three episodes finished during that time, but we'll see.
