Hangar Queens: A Modern Military Mecha Satire

[X] None of the US mechas took any notable damage during the engagement.

This or the next option.

[X] The refugee camp at Rubkan was not struck by collateral damage.

I see little reason to avoid damage. We stacked maintenance sky high, we can use it.

Either the company that built our mecha skimped on the systems, or the Syrians are using IR smoke, because your bog-standard smoke generating machines and smoke grenades are pretty much useless against legit thermal imagers that we should be running. Testimonial from Desert Storm - Abrams was fighting in smoke and literal sandstorms that blinded the Iraqis, but did just fine because America is a Pay to Win Whale in a sea of F2P minnows and the occasional salty tuna. :V

Goddamnit military industrial complex, you're making the F-35 development look well-managed. :V

...I just realised that one day, decades from now, I'll be on the internet as reformers pooh-pooh the next generation Ace Combat superplane and argue why can't we just stick to the proven legacy F-35, and I'll just pull out all the F-35 arguments from before :V
goddamnit cibai these defense contractors dei u all cannot calibrate for shit isit!?

Like FFS, the whole point of the millimeter-wave radar on the Apache Longbow is exactly so that even in a situation like this, you can blindfire radar-guided Hellfires (vs the usual laser-guided Hellfires) into an enemy tank formation.

Cibai these defense contractors, make a mecha weaker than helicopter and fighter. Why the fuck are we using these things again?

...skintight pilot suits and cockpit seats with built in gel/lube dispensers that apparently have tentacular properties.

ok, that works for me. I can roll with that.
I really should've taken you up on the TED talk before I posted this update.
On the other hand, I spent way too long bashing my head on this update and I really didn't want to have to write it again. :V

Ah well, more stuff to know for next time. There's still another 11 episodes for me to demonstrate my lack of military knowledge :V :V

Just to check, you are currently voting to allow the collateral damage to happen. Based on your stated reasoning, it would be better to vote for [] None of the US mechas took any notable damage during the engagement. instead.

@EternalObserver, this may also concern you, if you wish to avoid damage to mechas, please vote for another option.
@Vocalend and @hcvquizibo, you may also wish to change your votes if your goal is to avoid damaging the refugee camp.

Sorry again for the confusion, everyone. >_<

[x] The US Air Force was not embarrassed on international social media.

Silly double negatives.

This is really confusing, maybe you should have gone "pick three of these!" if you wanted this style.

Ah, not that I mean to criticize too much. It all works out in the end.

[X] The SAA forces did not retreat in reasonably good order.

Constantly voting to allow enemy to escape in order to preserve our forces worked great in Titanium Petals! *sob*

But I really don't want to have any sort of screw up on our first sortie. The enemy retreats, we did our job. The job wasn't 'kill every tank' it was 'stop the offensive' and this lets us stop it with no backlash on us. No social media bullshit, no yelling about repair crews, no failure of our actual objective (protect refugee camp), this is the best outcome to get a 'not a fuckup' reputation.

Yeah, voting for a thing not to happen is weird. Stripping the negatives from both sides wouls've been a lot easier to understand.

That being said,

[X] None of the US mechas took any notable damage during the engagement.

We can repair ours just fine, and having a mech working better than our teammates' is the only way we'll be relevant!

This is a vote for the USAF to be embarrassed.

Looking at the title again, I have a question.

Is the a satire of military or of quests?

I thought it was the first, but between the character name and this vote, I'm starting to wonder.

Let's do this

If it's a satire of quests then it's one that's frankly self-inflicted.
Military satire has been interspersed throughout if the QM has anythign to say about it.

Okay I'm awake now, nothing else in this thread caught on fire? That's good, because Australia is already on fire. :V

Preliminary vote tally has None of the US mechas took any notable damage during the engagement (i.e. the mechas take damage) in the lead with a plurality of 14/28 votes. I think. Some people voted for more than one option, not sure how that affects the count...
I think I've caught everyone who might've been affected, but if you have voted for this in error, i.e. because you wanted to avoid taking damage, please speak now or forever hold your peace.
I'm gonna be out all day today, so the vote will close in 9 hours.

A big thank you to everyone for your patience with my self-inflicted voting debacles.

If this was gonna be a satire of quests, I would've put in more jokes about granary management. :V

More seriously, while I am riffing a little bit on the style of vote PoT had and taking cues from that quest in other ways, the focus of this quest is supposed to be mechas and politics. Making fun of military culture is a non-core but nonetheless desirable side effect.
I notice that few people have commented on the faux-current affairs articles, which means that they're either too serious, or, depressingly, too realistic. :(

In particular, the vote for the character name was something that utterly blindsided me. It was supposed to be a minor option in case Peter Reynolds was too boring for some people, but I never expected people would write in a name like that.
I suppose I could have vetoed it, but I felt it would be poor form for me to revoke the players' choice so soon after starting a quest, so I decided to roll with it and see what happened.
It's actually gotten me some decent material out of the deal, so it hasn't been all that bad.

(Fun fact: the quest was specifically intended to have a male protagonist, given the preponderance of women in my other quest. I also did not expect that people would write in female names. I would've been okay to roll with that if it did win, though.)
Moral of the story, think really hard about what choices you offer questers and why.

Constantly voting to allow enemy to escape in order to preserve our forces worked great in Titanium Petals! *sob*
People also constantly voted for the Rose to be blown up and yet it limped on until the final battle, so I'm sure everything will be just fine.
