Shattered Empire: A Noble Warlord Quest (CKII)

Heh, that was as satisfying as I'd hoped. Now it's time to get to the gritty work of turning Not!Russia into a Great Power. We're not quite Catherine the Great, but that's okay. We're planning on doing better.

what was he expecting?

Presumably, at 80 with a glass of wine in his hand and a whore's mouth around his cock. My money would be "angry heir while in his 40's," though.

Ivan's reaction to a trial was very unexpected. I'm actually rather glad the trial vote won.

Well, his description fit the bill for an intrigue-build in a CK2 system, as opposed to being a great orator or lawyer. But he had an ego big enough that he thought he could just take what he wanted, Hell to what others think or want. I figure guys like that can't stand being remembered as not just evil, but an evil failure of an individual.

You can go to the gallows with dignity and a straight face, especially for a good cause. It's harder knowing that your legacy will be broken alongside your body.

You wave a dismissive hand as Ivan begins to struggle and yell, that fragile control finally shattered beyond repair. "No! No! This isn't how it was supposed to happen! Damn you! Damn you all!"
Should have thought of that before starting this coup.
You stand just inside the pair of ornate double doors, peeing into a room that is so familiar and yet so alien.
I sincerely hope you meant 'peeking'.
"Damn you, woman, you scared me half to death." You return the gesture, clapping her on the opposite shoulder and putting up your armor of good cheer.
FTFY
Tatiana shrugs. "Call it a friendly visit. You're looking at that chair like it ate your dinner and your puppy." As if she hadn't been waiting for an ungodly long time on the planet's surface already to rejoin you.

Still, she elicits a bit of a laugh. "It might as well have," you say, with only a hont of saddening truth to your words. Your friend is still adept at dissecting tones and hidden meanings, so you feel that she has an easy grasp of what ails you.

"Think of it this way, Nastya." She gestures to the empty Throne. "You've been trying to save as many people as you can for a long time, even before this whole sordid business. Just think of this as… another assignment with extra parameters, and you'll go far."
Lot of hard work ahead of us.
For the first time in a good long while, you settle in and smile. "Ladies. Gentlemen. Let's get to work."

End of the Prologue

First turn to follow soon...
The Tsarina is dead. Long Live Tsarina!

He looks at you again, the slightest glimmer of hope in your eyes.

Lord Kiril, Dame Egonova, Commodore Orlova, and Evgeny Aristarkhov fizzle into existence - followed eventually by Vladimir Aristarkhov
Let me check if I correctly remember who is who. Our Mother was married to Alexei Aristarkhov, the 2nd son of Aristarkhov Dynasty in order to bind one of our farthest reaches closer to the throne. The 1st son is, presumably, the current ruler of the Barony of Norilsk, Vladimir Aristarkhov, who is also our uncle. He says that Kiril is his brother, which would make him our uncle too, although we never referred to him as such, and Kiril's son Eugeny our cousin.

Looks like our inner circle consists primarily of our family... or what's left of it anyway.

Kiril and Vladimir are martial-specced from the looks of it, and last I heard we don't want to give Egonova too much power, so we have a lot of advisor slots to fill, and not that many trusted people to fill them with.

Correct on all counts - though you don't refer to Kiril as Uncle for the simple reason that you don't know him as well.

Also, thank you for the typos - I wanted to get this one out so I neglected to reread it before posting.

Also, fishing for mentions of our family tree I noticed something...

What is a kyarkezha? I can't even place the etimology of the word.
One thing to note is that Samaran isn't actually Russian - several millenia of linguistic drift mean that other languages have creeped in and stirred things around. Basically, Samaran is Bastard Russian with Hausa thrown in (the original owners of Mikhail were descended from East Africans, hence Egonova's skin color for example) and a lot of Persian, English, and German loanwords from millenia of Imperial rule. "Kyarkezha" is a slightly changed version of "Kyarkeca," the Hausa word for wolf. It's a small pack predator native to Mikhail that has become popular as exotic pets in Rurikovich space.

(Also it's my excuse for every time I misspell things. :V )

Lets not forget that we still have three not-soon-to-be-dead siblings in the Galaxy.

Turn 1: Minister Selection
The first order of business, you find, is the unenviable task of selecting a set of Ministers to govern five of the six so-called Great Pillars of State: the Ministry of State, the Ministry of War, the Exchequer, the Okhrana, and the Ministry of the Sciences. (The sixth, represented by the Bishopric of Moskva, is not up to your discretion.) Over the course of several weeks, you visit with and speak to a number of candidates for each. While many of your inner circle provide you with advice on the matter, as the new Tsarina, the final decision falls to you.
__

As you might guess, voting is by plan. Choose ONE from each ministry:

DIP - Lord/Lady Minister for State

[ ] Duke Pyotr Yusopov
"Ah, your Grace. I must of course apologize for the House of Yusopov's inability to assist during the removal of the usurper. But I can guarantee our full support in the future - as well as our not-inconsiderable connections across the Empire."

Pyotr Yusopov is infamous as a broker of deals and information. While he himself is not exactly impressive, with his demesne of Dnieper being primarily an agricultural exporter and a source of raw materials, he has created a network that spans the Empire. His arsenal does not include battleships and coilguns, but rather consists of parties, backhanded compliments, and charitable donations.

[ ] Baron Vladimir Aristarkhov
"I'm no diplomat, your Grace - I'm a soldier. But given the circumstances, maybe that is just what we need in a diplomat."

Despite being wounded at the Battle of Moskva, Vladimir Aristarkhov is one of your most loyal servants and trusted confidants. Purely as a diplomat, he will likely have to grow into the role; while he is charismatic, he is used almost exclusively to the charisma required as an officer. Still, if you want a militaristic government, he might be a good choice.

[ ] Ambassador Anna Zemicheva
"The Fortuna have a saying, your Grace - force is all-conquering, but its victories are short-lived. I will give you lasting success."

Zemicheva is an actual trained ambassador, having spent years on Terra and Olympus learning the trade of diplomacy. Her problem is a certain amount of idealism; she genuinely believes that the problems of the Empire can be solved without bloodshed, and her MO reflects this. She is also notably younger and lower-born than her noble counterparts.

MAR - Lord/Lady Minister for War

[ ] Admiral Evgenia Kozlova
"War is a noble art, your Grace. I consider myself to be among the best of its practitioners."

While Evgenia Kozlova did not officially side with you during the putsch, she is still an effective and experienced military officer. She has the problem of being held back by traditional values, tactics, and ideas, but maybe you can teach this old dog new tricks… eventually.

[ ] General Ivan Polikparov
"An army marches on its stomach, your Grace, and a fleet sails on its fuel. I always find it distressing how little this is understood."

Ivan Polikparov is known as a genius of logistics among the ground forces of the Armies of Rurik. However, his utility as a space commander - which is the most predominant part of modern combat - is limited.

[ ] Lord Kiril Aristarkhov
"You have seen my skills in combat yourself, your Grace, and I can personally ensure that the House of Aristarkhov remains your most loyal servants."

Your uncle Kiril Aristarkhov, while he is a military officer of no small talent, is not quite as famous or famously talented as the other two. What he is, however, is loyal - and is only a few years older than you, meaning that he still has potential.

STE - Lord/Lady Minister for the Exchequer

[ ] Dame Svetlana Egonova
"The Fortuna and the Sundiata are soft, but they usually have the right idea regarding business, girl. I can help us learn from them."

A consummate businesswoman, Dane Egonova has made it a priority to turn the Empire's business and industry from its backwater state compared to the Deep Core to a power that can rival Terra itself.

[ ] Lord Evgeny Aristarkhov
"M-me, your Grace? I d-do have e-experience in the running of f-finances, b-but I'm not sure w-why you're considering m-me."

Despite Evgeny Aristarkhov's insistence that his anxieties and stutter make him an unsuitable Minister for the Exchequer, it was his plan that regained you his throne. He is a veritable genius with numbers and finances, and is part of the Aristarkhov family.

[ ] Lord Bashir ibn Saddam al-Mufti
"I was wasted on my homeworld, your Grace. Your late mother, may the Primus bless her, realized my potential I believe - and I hope you can as well."

The young Lord Bashir al-Mufti has been a ward of the Rurikovich for a few years, since the murder of his father and his branch of the al-Mufti dynasty. While he is young and untested, he might bring in a new perspective - and after all, he is an al-Mufti. Finances and administration are second nature to him.

INT - Head of the Okhrana

[ ] Col. Andrei Lisitsyn
"This tragedy calls for a purge."

Soft spoken and taciturn, Colonel Andrei Lisitsyn was an Okhrana bigwig who actively opposed Ivan during the attempted coup. He is known as a counterintelligence specialist, having the most involvement in the "secret police" aspects of the job. Some might say he enjoys it… too much.

[ ] Maj. Tatiana Chernova
"Nastya, no. This isn't a good idea. I'm a field agent. Running an intelligence agency is best left to someone with experience. Will I do it if asked? Yes, of course, but-"

Your good friend Tanya has proven to be effective, loyal, and intelligent - all traits necessary in a chief spymaster. However, she is young, and has herself admitted that she doesn't think she has the leadership experience to qualify. In addition, she would be lost as a Hero Unit were she to be chosen.

[ ] Lady Daria Strigoi
"I can be your invisible shield, your Grace. The games you like to play are dangerous enough that it is necessary."

Lady Daria would call herself a foreign intelligence expert, if referring to other clans and the Imperial Demesne as "foreign" was not a social faux pas in most courts the Empire over. However, while she has served the Okhrana well as a trainer, she is a Strigoi. Her motivations will always be suspect.

LEA - Lord/Lady Minister for the Sciences

[ ] Lord Josef Nasarov
"Humanity is still such a tiny, young, frail thing in a cosmic ocean too vast to count, your Grace. I wish to shrink that ocean for humanity, if only a little bit."

Nasarov served as your mother's Lord Minister for the Sciences. He was not party to the coup at all, as he was in the Periphery on your mother's orders conducting exploration missions. He came home to quite a nasty shock - but he has still promised to maintain the same level of excellence that he gave to her. While idealistic, he is an expert on exploration - and will likely strive to make that a priority.

[ ] Lady Ming Zhou
"The Zhang have made it a priority to advance our Empire's technology by any means necessary. To aid you, your Grace, would be an honor and a privilege beyond compare."

Lady Ming Zhou is one of House Zhang's "scientific pilgrims" - a scion of a minor vassal House, sent out to advance scientific knowledge. Like other Zhang lords, Lady Ming values (and is valued for) innovation and advancement - though her tendency to "follow her inspiration" will mean that she will occasionally make recommendations that seem outwardly random.

[ ] Dr. Oleg Churbanov
"Science should always have practical applications. None of Nasarov's pie in the sky dreams or the Zhang woman's mad science. We must focus on medicine."

Dr. Oleg Churbanov is a Ministry doctor and scientist who innovated many new medical procedures and technologies. Despite being undoubtedly arrogant and condescending, even to his social betters, he is undeniably effective.

[X] Plan Realpolitik
-[X] Duke Pyotr Yusopov
-[X] Lord Kiril Aristarkhov
-[X] Dame Svetlana Egonova
-[X] Lady Daria Strigoi
-[X] Lord Josef Nasarov

A brief summery of my logic:

Diplomacy obviously goes to a fellow practitioner of Realpolitik over a naive 'trained' ambassador.
Military will reward family and loyalty, which is needed after a coup, while putting someone reasonably competent and proven reliable in one of the most sensitive and critical positions in the nation.
We already promised Egonova her spot, but it's also a good idea in general. We have the same ambition, after all.
Strigoi is a gamble, but we do have a loyal intrigue agent of our own to watch her and potentially train up to eventually replace her. I'm not interested in a Beria of our own.
Finally, our faction's bonus is to exploration - let's take advantage of that.

DIP - Lord/Lady Minister for State
[X]Duke Pyotr Yusopov

Because I think in the end, having connections is important, especially aince we've friends few and far between.

MAR - Lord/Lady Minister for War
[X] Lord Kiril Aristarkhov

When the coup came, a significant number of our fleet and army switched sides. We need someone loyal to us to ensure this doesnt happen again.

STE - Lord/Lady Minister for the Exchequer
[X]Dame Svetlana Egonova

Sure, our rep with her took a hit.But she stood by us during the coup, and if she has designs that are not friendly, why not put het in a position where we can watch her?

INT - Head of the Okhrana
[X] Col. Andrei Lisitsyn

Loyalty reasons, for one. Also I agree with him-there needs to be a reckoning in the intelligence bureaus.

LEA - Lord/Lady Minister for the Sciences
[X] Lady Ming Zhou

I'm a simple guy.I see opportunities for mad science, I vote for it.

Was missing an 'e'.

[X] Plan: Full House

-[X] Stewardship

Diplomacy, wasn't sure between Zemicheva or Yusopov, but decided to go with the one with lot of actual experience, and diplo is meant to solve problems peacefully before guns are drawn. Martial, while soldiers win battles and logistics win wars, capability with loyalty is the best option. Stewardship, we did promise her the job and she's good at what she does. Intrigue, very good at his job, especially counter intelligence, which is very important. Learning, new technology is always good, though Churbanov was good candidate as well.

I echo a few things from both of the previous votes, reward loyalty, keep our promises, also possible mad science.

I just hope it doesn't cost a lot of wasted time.

Well yes, and his plan was to call for Egonova.

Lord Kiril, Dame Egonova and Col. Lisitsyn are the picks I am dead set on. That leaves the Diplomatic and Learning advisors...

[x] Plan Setting Things Right

I'd probably pick Churbanov over Zhou short-term if the advisors could be changed in a decade or so. After we finish tidying up the house innovation would probably become a more attractive pick.

Diplomacy: While the Ambassador's training makes her a tempting pick, I'd rather not have to deal with naivety.
Martial: Tempted to go for the logistics guy, but I think we need loyalty here more than anything else.
Stewardship: Not exactly happy with picking Egonova after her attitude during the battle, but I'd rather put up with her for at least a while than develop a reputation for not keeping our word.
Intrigue: I'll admit, I thought that Tatiana would be a shoe in for this slot, but with the listed drawbacks, I'll go for the counter-intelligence guy. Besides, he's not exactly wrong about what needs to be done.
Learning: Leveraging our bonus to Exploration (Slipstream Discovery?), simple as that.
