Game night is story fodder, yes. Also, any source of bonus XP is a good thing. I think it highly likely we're going to hit max level before we make it home regardless, but the faster we can hit max level the better.
 
Not sure how I feel about our tactical officer only having 1 Elan.

However, I definitely think having a boost in the combat engine is a very great advantage.
