Heroes, Great and Mighty (Exalted x World of Darkness)

Loving this so far keep up the good work
Thank you! If you have any feedback you want to offer, please feel free to PM me! I'm always looking for ways to get better and give my audience a good story.

Good chapter. Maybe buy Maggie a magical/normal pup or kitten?

I'm feeling a good amount of incestous shtick after reading your note in chapter 3.

Like you said I blame anime and my incest bone. I mean... "You were the clock that was ticking in my heart, change your state of mind..." *Heavy thudding on door* "FBI, open up!"
Yeah, I was worried that the scene might give off that kind of vibe, but I decided to commit to it because I don't think wholesome family bonding should be avoided because of anime poisoning our perspectives.

You say that like a magical puppy or magical kitten is something you can just buy. Things like that aren't commonplace enough to be something one can simply purchase, even in someplace like the Goblin Market (or whatever it was called).

Plus, we work for TF: V now; their MO is to either put down potentially dangerous magical-creatures and harvest them for materials to use in further anti-supernatural-weaponry, or to subvert them to act on the order of their human handlers to hunt down other supernaturals.

A normal pup or kitten on the other hand... that would be much easier to deal with. We can help Maggie build up her confidence by helping her to take responsibility for the pet, as well as help with training and caring for the creature.

Add to the fact that we're a Zenith Caste Solar, and Zeniths are the foremost beast-tamers of Solars... we might end up raising that cat or dog to be as fierce as a Simhata, and thrice as deadly. Maybe buy a dog that we already know will be a good protector for Maggie, and then help Maggie train them to be as fearsome a guardian as Mouse from the Dresden Files.

Only issue would be for when Maggie needs to go to school, and can't bring her super-pet with her.

Speaking of Simhata... we should totally buy a second-hand, broken-down motorcycle and turn it into a Simhata Motors "Road Lion"... We're a Solar who has great Crafts and the Craftsman Needs No Tools charm. We can totally make a tricked-out, magically-enhanced motorcyle once we have some more free-time.
Bad player! No! Stop looking at my notes!

(honestly a magical super pet is definitely one of four options on the table for protecting Maggie if you want it, although considering the Dresden rip off it might end up being I might put it behind a few more prerequisites to avoid that implication.)

And in keeping with my general rule of ~48 hours voting time: 24 hours remain until the vote closes.

Absolutely kick ass magical pet sounds a. O.k. to me.

Makes me wonder if we should just jump straight to a protector spirit though.

With decent occult and social charms we should be able to bind a spirit of protection/nobility/heroism VERY easily.

Sadly these things are pretty rare in WoD, and even then they have a habit of being a bit... twisted. Like, a spirit of protection might end up being paranoid and lock her in the house "for her own good." It's that kind of setting, unfortunately.

Mmm. True. While we, or a sufficiently experienced occultist or wizard could handle the dangers inherent in such a deal... It's unlikely Magie could. Or that we would let her.

As far as I know, only spirits of high "pedigree" like werewolf totems, or the courts of the incarnate avoid that issue.

Which are... tricky. To get your hands on.

Yeah, it's a shame that there aren't any known werewolves on the cast yet, otherwise it might be able to work.

I'll also come clean and say that I'm going to be vetoing Sorcery as a method of summoning a friendly spirit, mostly because I'm going to be vetoing Sorcery in general. As much as I know people like playing characters with high magical proficiency, they're not that much fun for me to write. I generally prefer more... I guess down to earth protagonists with a more humanistic skillset.

I mean, ignoring your stats as a semi-divine superbeing, that is.

For some reason, this quest makes me think of this song and vice versa.
Huh, never would have made that connection myself. Hopefully in a good way!

Can we ask the association to set up some wards around the appartment? After our mission obviously.

Maggie is serously our weak link. Malcom would go ballistic if she got kidnapped.
How strong is the guard? Skilled or cannon fodder.

We are zenith.A tough to kill solaire with glowy fists. Lol, praise the sun for extra might?

I don't see why not.

You have no idea.

Solidly skilled. Task Force Valkyrie is no fool. They know how important she is to you and have every incentive to keep her safe when you're not able to do so yourself.

Bruh, do you even Praise It? \[T]/

(Funnily enough, making your own cult was on the table at one point, but you seem like you've gone down a different path.)

It's a good song.

I see at least three ways to connect it. The first is, well... Exalts, especially Solars, start strong and then just keep going faster and faster.

Second is the "fairytale of lies" line, which fits someone in WoD just becoming aware of what's behind the curtain.

Third is the thematics of the music video, which is modern hidden supernatural.

Huh. I would think that the "slow and ritualistic" style of Sorcery would have been fine... I'm not talking about being a fire-ball slinging wizard-type who's using Sorcery in battle, naturally. We're not a Mage, so Supernal magic is right out for sure.

Instead, it'd be more likely stuff that usually fell under "Sorcerous Workings" in the 3ed, you know? Like building wards around our home and/or neighborhood to protect and to alert us of supernatural danger (like ghosts/demons/malicious energies/whatever)? Or to imbue an item with our will so it will operate better or enchanted with minor, additional effects? Or ritual spells that can bind spirits to one's bidding, or exorcise them from a possessed host?

We are a Sun-Priest, after all, and at least this much should be within our purview, even if we're not a spell-slinging wizard-type, no?

To carry the Dresden Files analogy - though I know you're trying to minimize references to them - I was expecting that Thaumaturgy-style of using occult spells would be more amenable compared to Evocation... The long, slow, precise ritual and crafting effects that take time and effort to set up, rather than just slinging spells whenever we please? Hedge-Magic for mortals in comparison to Supernal Magic, basically.

I'm mostly interested in those three applications noted above - warding, making enchanted items, and being able to deal with spirits as a priest does. The rest I think Malcom wouldn't ever bother with too much. But those three would help with keeping both Maggie safe as well as himself safe so he can continue to protect her. Plus, they play well into Malcom's strengths and aptitudes as a Zenith Brawler who used to be an Engineer.

The slow magic I am relatively okay with, I just need to set it up properly if it's something people want to pursue.

Due to the unexpected and abrupt departure of a coworker (they quit and didn't tell anyone), I'll be working 60 hours a week for the foreseeable future. I'll try to keep this from affecting the Quest, but no promises.

Well, hopefully you're at least getting compensated suitably for it.

Story Post 19
[x] "I'll call you when I get to work, alright?"

"I'll call you when I get to work, alright?" Malcom said as he stood up, taking Maggie by then hand and giving it a comforting squeeze. She returned the gesture in kind and nodded.

"Okay." She said, wiping the tears form her eyes and putting on a brave face for him. "Good luck at your new job." She said.

They shared another quick hug before Malcom left, and made sure the Valkyrie squad next door had been informed that Bart might be stopping by, and that he was allowed to do so.

On his way out the door he looked up at the rooftop where he had seen the shadowed figure standing and watching the past few nights. He wasn't there this time, and Malcom wondered what that meant. He was less concerned now that he had an armed guard watching his home, but it was still something that bothered him.

The drive to the mission location was uneventful, and he made sure to give Maggie a call once he arrived like he promised. Nothing noteworthy had happened during the time he had been away, but she sounded happy that he had called nonetheless.

The location itself was an address provided to him by Naomi that turned out to be an abandoned shopping mall. There were several people milling about out front of one of the entryways, and as he walked towards them he saw that one of them was Naomi.

She approached him as he walked up, looking irritated about something. That in and of itself was unusual considering how calm and unflappable she normally was. She was also dressed very differently from normal. Gone were the normal suits and blouses, and in their place were a pair of jeans and a plain button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to fight the summer heat.

"Malcom, about time." She said, sounding as irritated as she looked. She stopped herself and took a moment, muttering something under her breath and making an odd sign with her hand. When she was done, she looked much calmer, more like her usual self.

"Sorry about that. I'm having difficulties with some of the on-site staff." She said as she motion for him to follow her. They walked over to where the others where. They were standing by a large black van, and were dressed in casual clothing. Were it not for their rigid postures and coordinated movements, Malcom might have mistaken them for ordinary people taking a gander at the abandoned complex out of curiosity.

The tension in the group visibly rose as they approached, to the point where one of them momentarily touched his service weapon that was holstered just out of sight. She removed her hand from the weapon at a look from someone Malcom assumed to be her superior, but it still put him on edge.

The man who had given the woman the look had a sour look on his face. He was a gruff, older looking man who was starting to see some grey in his hair, but the confidence in which he carried himself implied that his age had no impact on his abilities.

"I told you, you're not going in without authorization." He said as Naomi came within speaking distance. "I don't care if you're the new favorite. This is my command and I'm not going to let some caster barge in on my watch, especially not without backup."

"I have authorization, commander." Naomi said smoothly. "I showed you the documents and you verified them. With my associate here, I now possess the backup you required of me. Are there any other stipulations you have or may we proceed with the investigation?"

The commander looked at Malcom incredulously. "Him? Your boyfriend doesn't count as backup, Watanabe. Get out of here and let the actual professionals do their job, alright?" He said, glaring at her.

"Mister Clark is a special agent of Task Force Valkyrie." Naomi said, meeting his gaze unflinchingly as she reached in to her back pocket and pulled out a sheaf of papers and handed them to the commander. "These will verify his status, as well as his authorization to enter the property."

The commander took the documents and looked them over, his glower getting more and more prominent as he did so. When he was done, he shot Malcom a glare and thrust the papers in to Naomi's chest, which she took without complaint.

"Fine, get on with it then." He said, walking away without another word.

Malcom wasn't sure, but he thought he saw a smug look of triumph ghost across Naomi's face as the commander barked orders to let them through.

He definitely heard her mutter "Asshole" under her breath once they were inside, though.

Malcom had never seen the inside of an abandoned shopping mall before, but it was pretty much what he had expected. The whole place had been stripped of any identifying brand or store, save for places where it was physically apart of the architecture. There was trash and debris everywhere, and almost every surface was carted with a layer of dust, dirt or both. Off to the side there was an abandoned bicycle that was rusted over, and more than a few windows had been smashed in, likely by vagrants or vandals looking to get drunk or high while exploring. The presence of abandoned beer cans and discarded needles in one corner all but verified that theory.

Malcom looked over at Naomi, who had produced a flashlight from nowhere and was examining the entry way with a thoughtful look on her face. She swept the beam of light across a few shops in examination before, apparently satisfied with what she was seeing, switched it off and turned to him.

"This is a basic fact finding mission." She said, adopting the tone that Malcolm had come to recognize as her 'explanation voice.' "I don't know if you can feel it, but the membrane between here and the Gauntlet is unusually thin. We believe that the Seers are using this as site as a staging ground for their rituals that help them influence the local spiritual climate of Boston, which helps them manipulate the mood and attitudes of the city at large."

That meshed with what Malcom knew of spirits. They were ephemeral personifications of place, ideas or objects that held sway over whatever they embodied. Influencing a spirit allowed you to influence whatever they were a spirit of. The Gauntlet was the barrier between this world and the Shadow, the spirit world. Since it was so thin here, it was an ideal location to travel in to the Shadow and manipulate the spiritual side of Boston.

[] Ask about the Seers and their plans for this location (write in).
[] Ask if she's alright.
[] Ask about the encounter with the commander.

...I want to ask about the Seers and the location, but I'm not sure what to ask. I'll wait for someone else...again.

A little nitpick - unless she pulled the flashlight out of thin air (which is possible), you might want to simply go with "produced a flashlight". If there's nothing unusual about the action from Malcolm's point of view, best to keep it simple I think.

[Jk] (65 DC check) Ask Naomi for a date later

[x] Ask if she's alright.
I wanted to choose the commander but that would further sour her mood.

She did pull the flashlight out of thin air using space magic, yeah, the passage was meant to allude to that. Malcom has already seen her pull objects from storage locations too small to hold them normally, so I didn't think it was necessary to go in depth with the description since it was in line with what Malcom has seen before.

Got it - it's just fine then; thanks for clarifying.
