Day 28/An Offer
Reading Journal: 51 – 25 (GE) + 10 (The Dice Are Kind) = 36 Fail

...Wait, haven't you read this page already?

You shake your head, your gaze on the open journal in front of you. You focus on the first words on the page again, running each individual word through your mind. You soon reach the end of the page, but none of the words stick in your head.

Confused, you turn the page and....what the fuck?

You've...you've read through this one too?

It repeats like that until eventually, frustration gets the better of you. You close the journal in a huff and place your head in your hands.

This...might be harder to get over than you thought.

(No Progress)

Reading with Father: 21 + 15 (Prodigy) + 15 (Potential) = 51 Success

Thankfully, Ana's here with you. Her presence alone is enough to boost your spirits. She walks over, climbs up into the bed and sits close to your chest. Under her arm is one of the books she brought over from home, specifically the Psychology one. You feel your stomach sink at the thought of reading something waaaayyy above your mental ability. But, you're willing to put up with it for Ana's sake. Especially when she's here to help you understand the more "confusing" aspects of the book.

The two of you just spend the rest of the day like that. Both of you on the hospital bed, Ana reading through the pages, stopping every once in a while to explain topics you don't understand to you, and making sure that you remember what you've just read.

You both don't accomplish much, the constant stops and retreading end up halting most progress. But, neither of you care about that. You're both just happy to be there with each other for as long as you can be.

(Ana has made 50% Progress towards a new Perk!)

You suppose that's why you should've seen what happened next coming.

Suddenly, Ana jerks her head towards the door to the room. She sighs and closes the book in her hands, "They came faster than I anticipated. No matter."

She hops off your bed, leaving you with a worried look on your face. You sit up while hiding the journal behind your pillow, "Ana? Is something wrong?"

"Not at all, father," Ana says while moving to the edge of your bed, "You can lay back down. This will only take a moment."

You're about to ask what it is, but then you feel it.

The oppressive air stifling your breathing, the sudden drop in the temperature of the room, the sound of your heart hammering in your chest....it's all too familiar.

Your gaze shoots towards the door and only now do you hear the sound of footsteps getting closer to your room. You feel your hair stand on end, while you involuntarily shake your head.

No, it can't be her.

She can't be here, not now.

You're in no position to fight her. No one else is either. You're all too injured from the last fight.

Which only leaves Ana, which means she'll have to fight, and if she gets hurt then...

You prepare yourself to launch out of your bed, ready to tackle whoever comes through that door. You won't sit by and let your daughter get so much as a scratch on her!

The footsteps reach your door, then stop.

There's silence.

Then....someone knocks on the door.

A light, uplifting voice comes through, "Um, excuse me? Are Howard and Ana Craft in there?"

You raise an eyebrow at the...casualness of the voice. It doesn't sound like someone who's here to fight you. If anything, it reminds you of Weston's voice whenever he came to congratulate everyone on a job well done.

You feel your guard lower as Ana replies, "Yes, and who might you be?"

"Oh, good! Mind if we come in?" the voice quickly adds, "And we're not here to fight. Promise. One of us is actually here to apologize."

You hear a bit of shuffling before the voice says, "Ethel! We went over this! You're going to apologize. Because you and Knight disobeyed orders that's why! No, no, no, you're not talking your way out of this. You know what, I'm opening the door. I'm opening the door, we're doing this, now! And tell Knight to cut the pressure! You've probably scared the man half to death!"

True to their word, the door opens and in steps the woman who attacked you ten days ago, her dullahan, and someone you don't recognize. So too does the originally oppressive atmosphere completely disappear from the room. The woman and her dullahan, Ethel and Knight you assume, haven't changed much. Knight looks exactly the same from last time, except that any injuries you gave it have since healed up. Ethel had her red hair tied up in a bun, wore a knee-length blue skirt, and a solid purple sweatshirt. Her arms were crossed as she looked between you and Anastasia, anger warring with shame on her face. Knight merely stood by its master's side, but you could see its free hand gripped in a tight fist.

The newcomer, on the other hand, was....hard to pin down.

His clothes were....honestly, you don't even know where to start. His big, wide-brimmed black hat, the pink-rimmed glasses, his...is that a robe? It was covered in belts, studs and otherwise, but at the end of the day, it was literally a black robe that went down to his feet.

Who wears a robe nowadays? To a hospital no less?

His face was just as strange. A full beard, mustache, and sideburns combo, the same color as his brown hair. Unlike Ethel, who looked like she was in her late twenties, this guy looked like he was in his late thirties. But he carried himself with this youthful energy, evidenced by the fact he was posing like a superhero.

The man clapped his hands as you felt the tension ebb from your body, "Before we begin introductions, I believe that someone here has something she wants to say." He turned towards Ethel with a big smile on his face.

When she didn't say anything, he whispered, "Ethel? That's your cue. Apologize."

The woman huffed and pointed her face towards the ceiling before quickly saying, "I'm sorry."

Ana chuckled, getting back onto your bed and sitting by your side before replying, "That didn't sound like she meant it. She did attempt to harm both me and my father after all."

"And she is acting very unprofessional for one of her standing," the man says this through clenched teeth, smile still firmly on his face, "Perhaps she isn't truly sorry. If that's the case, then maybe she'd like to take a trip back home to cool her head."

This gets Ethel to whip her head down to look the man in the eye. Her eyes are wide as she speaks with a panicked tone to her voice, "You wouldn't dare!"

"Ethel~," the man places a finger on her nose, "you know the rules. Act right, or get out. Now, apologize." His face is smiling, but you can feel the real threat behind his words.

Ethel clenches her fist, making her arms shake in anger as you see her pride war with her fear. Eventually, her fear wins out and she bows in your direction while saying in a very high pitched voice, "I'm sorry! I'm truly, terribly sorry for what I did! Please, forgive me!"

You...don't really know how to respond to this. Never did you imagine this would happen when you woke up today.

Ana, on the other hand, is absolutely loving this. She's smiling from ear to ear while clapping her hands, "Wonderful! Wonderful! I do believe she has appropriately apologized. What do you say, father? After all, you are the one who ultimately defeated her."

"W-well," you try not to stare at Ethel as she bows to you, "I-it's not really necessary. I mean, she didn't hurt us that badly."

Ana shakes her head while touching your cheek, "You are far too kind for your own good, father. But, I suppose you are correct. You are hereby forgiven for your discretion, Ethel. You may stand."

For some reason, you think Ana enjoyed saying that a bit too much. Either way, Ethel bows one last time before stepping backward until she's next to Knight. The dullahan's fist is clenching so hard that you can hear the metal creaking at this point. You don't think it will be apologizing anytime soon.

The man claps his hands again, "See, Ethel? Was that really so hard? Now, onto the matter at hand."

He raises a finger as he begins, "Mr. Craft, allow me to give you a proper introduction. My colleague and I are members of-"

"A sect of mages that operates in America," Ana interrupts while checking her nails for dust. She completely ignores the utterly floored look on your face, "I figured you would be visiting us soon. The death of an Eldritch, no matter how weak, would cause you to come out of hiding."

You glance between your daughter and the stranger, who's finger has lowered slightly at Ana stealing his thunder. His smile is still on his face though. He clears his throat, "Hmm, yes. Well deduced, young lady. My name is Mark, I am the Head of our Division. And this is my partner, HORUS!~" Mark poses with both of his hands held out behind him like wings while he bends forward.

Nothing happens.

Mark clears his throat, "I said, my partner HORUS!~" he makes the gesture again.

Still nothing.

"Hours! Horus! Come on, Hours! We practiced this!" He shouts while looking above your bed.

"Yes, but I never agreed to be a part of it," the voice of an old man comes from above you. You look up and come face to face with....is that an eagle?

"Greetings, Craft," aaand its beak just moved and words came out. "Horus" turns to your daughter, "I extend the same to you, your eminence."

"Accepted. It's good to see someone who knows proper etiquette," you can't help but feel hurt as Ana shakes Horus'...talon. The bird flies over to Mark as he stands up straight.

Mark holds out his arm for Horus to land on. You're pretty sure you can see the eagle looking at its master with as much annoyance as possible, "And why do you have your glamour on? We already dealt with the cameras. Take that before you embarrass the Organization any further."

Mark sighs, the smile still on his face, "Everyone's ruining my fun today." There's a snapping sound, and....reality skips.

You're not even going to try and deny it anymore, reality just fucking skipped and Mark is now wearing a standard business outfit, and you really need to sleep off this migraine.

Mark walks forward until he's on your left side. His partner starts to preen his wings, while Mark speaks, "Well since everyone has stolen my thunder today, I'll start explaining the other reasons why we have come to visit you. Firstly, allow me to add context to the misunderstanding that occurred between you, Ethel, and Knight over there. You see, she...overstepped. We merely wanted her to scout out the appearance of a new Eldritch Horror, see what the situation was, and only make contact if absolutely necessary."

He shoots a glare at Ethel, who looks down at the ground in shame. He turns back to you and continues, "Do not worry, she has been reprimanded and, as you saw, regrets her actions. Oh, and we did get your message. We got it loud and clear. And trust us, we have no plans of messing around with your neighborhood....for the most part."

A frown comes across your face, one that Mark sees. He holds up his hand in a placating manner, "Before you say anything, no we won't draw any kind of serious conflict to your home. Just like you, we want to prevent any type of harm or casualties being done."

You don't really have more to go off except his word, so you'll have to make do with that. You gesture for him to continue, but he instead waves towards his bird, "I'll let Horus handle the rest. He's better at giving concrete explanations."

"That's because I don't embellish," Horus says while rolling his eyes, as much as a bird can, "I'm going to be straight with you, Mr. Craft, we want you and your daughter to come work with us."

"....I'm sorry, can you repeat that?" he didn't say what you think he said, right?

"They are offering you a job, father," Ana crosses her arms, "and I am allowed to come with you. In short, they wish to keep an eye on us."

"Call it what you wish, but here are the facts of the matter," Horus flaps his wings a bit, "First, your father is unemployed and it won't be easy getting a job to sustain yourselves for very long. Second, your recent 'escapade' has clued many of the supernaturals in the area to your location. Most are going to leave you alone, but the ones that don't might cause you and your neighborhood trouble. Third, you need training, Mr. Craft. If you're going to defend your daughter from what's coming, then you need to be better than what you are now."

Horus holds one of his wings out towards his partner, "We offer all those things. A steady job, good payment, allies to assist you when you need them, physical and mental training, and the official protection of an Association of Mages. Few Mythics would attack you if they knew that fact. In return, we ask to observe both you and your daughter as long as you are under our employ. I believe this is a very satisfactory agreement."

"Ah, ah," Mark holds up a finger, "it is, but it is not one that they have to rush into." He reaches into his shirt pocket and takes out a tiny bell. It's round, gray, and about as big as a marble. It has a tiny black bow tied to its top. Mark drops it towards your hand, and you instinctively catch it, "We'll keep the offer open for three days. If you ever accept, just ring that bell four times. I'll come running and help you out from there."

He suddenly grabs your hand and shakes it vigorously, "I do hope you accept. Having you around will make things so much more fun!" his smile hasn't disappeared once since he came in here, and you can't help but feel creeped out by it.

Horus sighs, shaking his head as Mark starts heading towards the door, "You know you just creeped him out with that."

"You say that every time I greet someone new!" Mark says in frustration as he leaves out the door. Ethel falls into step behind him, but not before shooting you a look that says, while you might have forgiven her, she hasn't forgiven you. Her Knight does the same as it lifts its severed head up to stare at you as it leaves.

The door closes.

It's just you and Ana again.

You look down at Ana, still trying to process everything that happened, "Honey? Did I just get scouted by a sect of mages, one of which has a talking bird named Horus as a partner, and the other the woman who attacked us ten days ago?"

"Indeed you did, father," Ana says without a hint of hesitation.

"OK," you stare at the door for a bit, "Daddy is going to sleep this headache off, ok Ana?"

"Understood, father."

...Personally? I feel like they're going to want us to do that pact thing and start learning MAGIC! Which will be...Scary if you ask me.
On the other hand...It's a way around our current woes, it's just a question of what's better in the long-run...
I'm of two minds. On the one hand, safety in the mob. On the other hand, getting pulled into said mob's fights. And Ethel who may or may not still want to settle the score with us...Personally? After going back and refreshing my memory on her 'introduction' I'm inclined to kick that offer to the curb, if only because I'm trying to decide how...'Normal' that sort of behavior is amongst Mages, and frankly I'm not feeling hopeful that we'll not get in any more fights, frankly...And also the chance of her trying to start crap with us again should we 'have the gall to refuse such a generous offer'.
