The first incident was in Quig Quig, China.
An extraordinary baby was born who radiated light.
After that, reports of people with superpowers popped up across the globe. No one knew who was causing this phenomena.
Overnight, the world became a superhuman society where about 80% of the population possessed some kind of special ability.
As cities swirled with confusion and strife, a new profession emerged from the chaos.
Because of the emergence of quirks, people were able to pursue heroics as a profession.
This is the story of one of those aspiring to become a hero... Is what I'd say if this were that kind of story.
It isn't.

U.A's entrance exam is... Impressive from your cushy seat in the judges' booth. You'll admit that much.
It's a lot different from the one you'd taken when you'd attended.
"Those kids are really tearing through those robots, huh," you mumble to yourself as you watch the carnage on the screens.
That garners you a few questioning looks from your colleagues.
Colleagues. Right. Because you're teaching at U.A. now. The number one high-school for heroics. The top Hero Academy in Japan. There's just enough of the idealistic child you once were inside the salty adult you've become to squee a little at the fact that holy shit you're actually teaching at U.A.
The salty adult that comprises most of your being reminds you that you never actually attended U.A. and that your glee's kind of misplaced, but you decide to ignore those feelings for now and refocus back on the screens in front of you. The footage of one blond kid blasting a few three-pointers into hunks of junk catches your eye. What's that kid's name again? Bakugou Katsuki? He's mowing through those things like it's nothing.
"So the entrance exam- Is it always like this?" You ask now.
"Yes, that's correct!" Your nominal superior, Nezu answers. "We've made some modifications to the exam over time, but the fundamentals have remained the same."
"It's a little unfair though, isn't it?" You muse. "In that it favors the students with more combative quirks- Why are you all snickering?"
"... You're definitely new," you hear Snipe chuckle from behind you. That's also when you hear the clink of coins changing hands. Present Mic clicks his tongue a little out of disappointment. Eraserhead secretes his winnings inside his pockets and proceeds to go back to staring at the screens. You're not sure if he's bored out of his mind or if he's focused on the screens, you just can't read the guy.
Realization hits you.
"Oh. I take it this topic's come up before."
"Yes, but don't worry about it. Every time it comes up it's always an interesting line of discussion!" Nezu chimes in. "You are correct, the entrance exam is certainly weighted against students with useful quirks who aren't suited towards taking down hordes of robots. In a way, it's reflective of the state of the Pro Hero industry today. However, this is not the only opportunity for these students to shine."
"... Right, the Sports Festival is a thing," you say as you struggle to recall all the information you'd crammed into your head after you'd received notification that you were actually teaching at U.A. "Most of the students are going to end up placing in General Education, only forty applicants will be fast-tracked into the Heroics Department..."
This... is certainly more selective than you'd thought it'd be. Then again, Nezu's right. The exam's reflective of the state of the Pro Hero industry today.
It's a competitive field. You lapse into silence as you go back to staring at the screens. The exam's winding down from the look of it. The zero-pointers have been released, most of the regular robots have been cleared from the exam area-
"Holy shit, did that kid just punch out a zero-pointer?"

Pretty much the only way you'd get me to let you pick out any particular powerset is if you sent me a 1k word argumentative essay explaining why I should pick out that powerset in particular and how it'd only be beneficial for the quest. 12 point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins.
