That much is true. If Guilt ends up winning, it's likely to turn out into a shouting match, with "I'm gonna do what you loser should have done from the start!" on one hand, and "I don't see YOU picking up the [] Reconnect with Mom option last time it appeared, jerkass!" on the other.

... Now I kind of want to vote for it in fact.

if we pick guilt the AU where it's shouto quest will get very mad at rin

let's make them mad
I do agree that it would absolutely start a fight, but it's still too early for that. Let it simmer until just before the Sport Festival and it'll put Shoto into a really weird place mentally for his fights. Or let it fester even more after Shoto realizes he wants to be better than their father and he starts visiting mom and Rin completely blows up cause "You have everything that matters! The Quirk! The attention from both of Them! You want this too!?!". Then the realization after the fight that no it was always about the Guilt.

[X] Guilt. You never want to be put into a position where you can't protect people again. You are not going to be a bystander on the sidelines. Not after what happened to Mom.

Cetash makes a good argument, news at eleven.

I do kind of like this, but I'd still prefer guilt. I don't think the blowup will be quite that bad, but I do want their relationship to be pretty damaged when they have their real confrontation (before the sports festival could work really well!) Also because I think that people voting for independence might feel a little cheated if it turns out to have been about guilt all along; if independence wins I'd prefer to lean more into that so that people felt their choice there really mattered~

[X] Independence. To stand outside of your father's shadow is as much of an important goal as spiting him. Not being known as 'the daughter of that abusive asshole' is one of your highest priorities.

Changing vote, mainly because one of the goals I can picture Rin trying to achieve this as quickly as possible. Stepping out of her father's shadow will take time but seeking emancipation? That is a possibility but I know nothing of how that is done in Japan now. Let alone a Japan with super powered citizens trying to forget a horrible time period.

Alright, I'm switching my vote. Minx convinced me.

1. Shoto is going for independence if this was a vote for his motivation, but Shoto's version of independence is a physical denial of his father by refusing to use his quirk. For us, it's very different, and the ways in which we try and make our own way and how it diverges from Shoto can influence our relationship.

2. Independence is fundamentally adolescent and self-centered, but in a less angsty and dramatic way than guilt. This is a mileage may vary argument; some people like a lot of angst and drama, but if it's not for you then guilt might be less attractive.

3. By being so fundamentally self-centered it opens up a distinct pathway to development through the friends Rin makes and the teachers who explain to her that it's not just about her.

4. Guilt is a very self-effacing and popular superhero motivation, with a lot of traumatic pasts in the typical Super backstory.

Also because it comes with a very nice potential quote: "I want to be a hero so that I can be me."

I also like @Oruzhiye's argument of there still being some underlying guilt, but it not really being something that is driving us forward, and is more liable to come out in impassioned moments. This also allows our tension with Shoto to be maintained at a lightly simmering level until it finally explodes at the appropriate moment.

@Cetashwayo is wise, and also saved me the effort of writing an essay for Independence, so in conclusion vote for Independence because I said so.

Welp, I'll just keep following Cetash's arguments. :V

Yeah, Independence has really interesting narrative potential I feel.

As @Cetashwayo noted, Shouto also went for Independence this way, and us also taking the option sets up interesting parallels and contrasts between us. It allows them, and their development, to potentially play off each other in ways that could be more interesting than Guilt.

Personally, I view Independence as sort of the most self-centered motivation, that shows very limited understanding of what being a hero should be about. This is actually an opportunity though, as it provides the impetus for arcs about learning the True Meaning of Heroism and could bounce off later developments like Stain very nicely.

Thus, I now change my vote to:

[X] Independence. To stand outside of your father's shadow is as much of an important goal as spiting him. Not being known as 'the daughter of that abusive asshole' is one of your highest priorities.

Guys, it is Shoto. Not Shouto.

I like the tone this one sets a bit better.

I like the idea of being a hero because we wanted to protect people to begin with.
Fuck this toxic family, it doesn't have to define EVERYTHING we do!
