Dawn of a New Day
You've been excited for the school camping trip for a long time. It's a new thing, introduced this year, and you can't wait, because there's no way the counselors will be able to keep an eye on everyone at once. Meaning you'll be able to bring Biyomon with you!

All your friends are going, too... well, almost all of them. Joe came down with a nasty stomach virus recently, and while he's feeling better now, apparently they're worried he's still contagious.

But that's fine, because that just means one less person for Biyomon to pretend to be a toy around. You really regret not telling Mimi about her, but it doesn't matter right now.

"Sora, do you have everything you need for camp?" Your mother asks.

"Yeah, I've got everything," You confirm. She turns to your partner.

"Biyomon?"

"She's telling the truth," Your partner tells her. You wish you weren't under this level of scrutiny, but after what happened the last time Matt came to visit, you're just glad you're allowed to go to camp.

The doorbell rings. "That'll be Tai and Kari," You comment, grabbing your bags. You don't have as much as you'd like, but as your father vetoed having Birdramon fly the stuff there, you'll take what you can get.

"Hi, Sora!" Kari pipes up as soon as you open the door. She's graduated fully from whistling this past year, wearing a pink backpack that apparently has all of her essentials. The whistle's still there, of course. At this point, it feels wrong to imagine her without it. It'd be like Joe without his glasses, or Tai without his goggles. Unthinkable. "You ready to go?"

"I've been ready for the past hour," You point out. Biyomon never did grow out of waking you up with the sun. If anything, you've just grown into the routine.

"Then let's go already!" Tai interjects. You nod, and take off after him, your Digimon flying right behind you.

"Have fun at camp!" Your mother calls, and you turn to wave back. But only for a moment.

This is going to be so. Much. Fun!

Today has been a lot of waiting. First, it was waiting for the day to actually arrive. Then it was waiting for the Kamiyas, because you'd promised to walk with them. And you arrived at the school early, so now you're waiting for the buses.

Well, at least you aren't the only one suffering. Matt arrived a few minutes ago, TK and Patamon close behind. Izzy and Mimi have been here since before you arrived, and are currently talking about something. And, of course, there are Tai and Kari.

So what next?

[ ] Chat with Izzy and Mimi. You've been meaning to introduce the girl to your partner for a while now, this seems like a good time to do it.

[ ] Chat with Tai and Kari. You arrived here with them, after all, it's only polite.

[ ] Chat with Matt and TK. You haven't actually seen TK since you taught him how to Digivolve Patamon, and you're wondering how he's been.

[ ] Stand around and wait. You need to lay down some ground rules for camp with Biyomon, might as well get that out of the way.

We don't want to freak anyone out with our flying, talking, huge-ass pink bird before we have to. Best to get the way to do that clear.

Also. Time for Doomsday.

Why not? Oh also,
Apprentice of the South: Kazuya Matsumoto, partner to Zhuqiaomon, has taught you a number of things over the years. Some of it may even be relevant to your current situation! (+2 CON, +3 DEX. +15 to all rolls in southern hemisphere of DigiWorld, +10 to aerial combat elsewhere. Except on water. All rolls are halved on water.

So there's the catch. Oh well. Nothing we can do about it now.
Two things of note. One, I find it hilarious the guy obsessed with Shrimp gives us a malus to rolls involving water.

Two, the Digidestined who's partner built for aquatic combat is sick and is gone for the first vult into the Digital World.

There goes our water utility Mon for our first venture. Let's....uh...try and keep Sora either on dry land or airborne, yeah?

Wait, what...

Oh fuck.

Oh fuck.

Hey, wait.

Is the partnership thing entirely dependent on person, or could like,,, Gomamon and Kari be partners, at least for the first stretch of things?

Hey does that we mean we get Gatomon from the bat? I'm pretty sure she single handily bodies most of the early encounters on File Island ..

Unfortunately it's entirely reliant on the Person. Kari's Crest Trait does seem capable of allowing Digivolution but uh, best assume that's locked for now.

Yeah it's reliant on the Digidestined. Our poor Gomamon buddy wouldn't be able to even reafh Rookie stage without Joe.

Might as well keep her from freaking out.

And yeah, crap, Joe not being there is going to be a major hinderence.

That malus, jesus. Besides Joe, we have one of the only other digimon that can really fight on water (by virtue of flight) until people start reaching ultimate, and Joe's not here. I'd HIGHLY suggest we stay away from water. Which may be an issue given that File Island is... well, an island.

Heart of the Cards! Gotta Catch 'Em All! Or something!

Honestly? That malus makes perfect sense as a draw back due to how powerful the Trait is. So I'm fine with it as is. It sucks by principle due to how rolls will be effected in the future but that's just something we'll have to deal with.

I'm trying to think of all the times Joe saved the day or was super useful in the File Island arc in particular. Been about 15 years since I watched Adventure so I can only remember one...and it specifically involved saving Sora. All I will say is...Mind over Matter.

(And yeah I am a filthy dub watcher, I only ever saw Digimon when it was first broadcast over here and never again since, sue me)

As someone who's only watched this on Netflix, I relate to you.

And... fuck. You're right. But, if that ends up happening, it's definitely not gonna happen the same way, hell, Sora may not even be on that part of File Island!

...Actually Devimon might already be dead by then. We have both Birdramon and Angemon already unlocked.

You are 100% right in that we are basically in the Wild West in terms of canon. Main thing to take off this is Joe was an important member of the team with his own skills, so we need to be prepared to make up for that somehow.

That's kind of the benefit of Apprentice of the South. Joe's biggest benefit would be his medicine rolls. Something we now have, albeit not to the degree he does, which is benefitted through the +15.
