When I came up with the fairly badass handmaidens of Quellonia, I was actually thinking of the Handmaiden from Star Wars KOTOR 2 (which is one of the most interesting and memorable videogames I've ever played, despite its many flaws and the fact that for a long time it had no real ending). I've never actually read or seen the TV series of The Handmaid's Tale, but because of pop culture osmosis I know what it's about.
A handmaid is a female servant. Although the Queli tend to glorify the relationships between handmaids and their noble ladies, the reality is not necessarily glorious. It can still be a dirty, demeaning job, depending on the circumstances. Also, other cultures in this fictional setting have different attitudes, some of which Jana alluded to in her first ever POV chapter (see here).
Um, Jana was supposed to have 2 levels in Thieving. However, I forgot to transfer a few of her skills from my rough notes to her character sheet. I've edited it since them.
Illusions, Telepathy and Telekinesis weren't on any of the lists of things I said Jana could learn, but it makes sense that if Jana wanted to learn any of them she could ask Elys to teach her. So... I'll allow it.
Because it was most people's preferred option (i.e. it got the most points), I'll upgrade Jana's Thieving first, then Ritual Magic and Stealth, then Agility, and so on. I'm going to assume Jana has 15xp to play with.
It costs 3xp to increase Thieving to level 3, 3xp to increase Ritual Magic to level 3, 3xp to increase Stealth to level 3, and 3xp to increase Agility to level 3. Going down the list, she doesn't have enough xp left to purchase the Backstab trait (which would cost 5xp), but she can spend 3xp to increase Close Combat to level 3. That's 15xp in total. Now that I've spent all of her xp, she can't buy anything else until the next time she levels up.
Anyway... I'm having trouble writing that interlude and I'm tempted to just skip past it.
I'm not getting much writing done at the moment. I'm tired. Ugh, I think I need to change my lifestyle to end the cycle of being permanently sleep-deprived. There just never seems to be enough time for me to do everything I want to do.

I've never played KOTOR, though I've thought about getting it a few times. But yeah, I haven't seen the show either, but we had to read the book in our Dystopian course. It's an interesting read.

This, 100%. As an insomniac, setting up a consistent sleep schedule and sticking to it is the most important thing you can do to help yourself out. While minor sleep deprivation leads to mania, having it as a chronic condition inevitable leads to a loss of energy and can potentially exacerbate depression.

All right, I'm going to try to update this weekend. After that, I might put this quest on hiatus for a month or so while I try to finish off my other quest.
For now, here's another bit of Jana/Amber dialogue that I wanted to include in the last storyline but couldn't find a place for:
Amber: (looks Jana up and down) 'So... you're the Chosen One of a god, now? Do you feel any different?'
Jana: (shakily) 'Uhh... not really.'
Amber: (hugs Jana) 'I'm sure you'll get used to it. Maybe it won't always be easy. I'm sure there'll be a whole new batch of problems you'll have to deal with now that you've gained these incredible powers. Still, even when things seem at their worst, there's something I want you to remember and take comfort in.'
Jana: 'What's that?'
Amber: 'At least your parents didn't name you after a blob of whale vomit.'
(Remember, Amber's full name is "Ambergrys".)
Of course, one reason why I didn't include it is that this dialogue was meant to take place after Jana became the Chosen of a god. Since she didn't get Chosen, it didn't happen. I probably could have adapted it to suit what happened instead, but I didn't. That last chapter was already getting a bit overstuffed.
For a long time, there was nothing. Not even darkness. As his soul drifted in the aether, Crisithys Pebelstien remembered nothing of himself or the life he had lived.
If he'd been left alone, he would eventually have moved on, floated free and returned to the Wheel. Perhaps the Forgotten God would have been merciful. But it was not to be.
Like a fish caught in a net, his soul was bound by strands of magical energy and dragged back to his body. No… not his body. A body, large and monstrously muscled, with pale yellowish skin that appeared almost translucent.
In that body, he felt a faint, nagging pain. He was lying on a hard, flat surface. His hands and feet were bound. There was a hazy blue light, but he could hardly see anything. His eyes refused to focus.
He lay there for a while. Hunger and thirst were like rats nibbling at the edges of his mind. He dozed fitfully.
When next he came to, someone was standing over him. A dark, slim silhouette. Straining to see, he caught a glimpse of a robed woman wearing a silver mask. Of her face, only her eyes were visible: hard and sharp like chips of stone.
'Crisithys Pebelstien, please attend,' she said in a clipped, lightly-accented voice.
'I'm here,' he mumbled. 'What have you done to me? Can't the dead rest in peace?'
'You were hired to do a job: to land on Ismar, disable the defences, and get it ready for Aspitolm to invade. But you failed. Your master, the King-Emperor of Aspitolm, was very unhappy with you.'
'I did the best I could! I died, bygods! Yslena Sayce cut my head off! What more did the Whale-that-Walks expect of me?'
Behind that impassive silver mask, the woman's expression couldn't be seen. She appeared wholly impassive. She didn't even seem to blink.
'The Aspiti Empire spent a substantial sum of money on you. Hiring your little band of mercenaries was not cheap. Transporting them, feeding them, and outfitting them ready for their mission… so many costs, all adding up. Such a high total. A monumental debt they say you must repay.'
'So, what do they plan to do? They got you to bring me back to life? Turn me into some kind of undead monster they're gonna use as a slave until I've paid off the debt?' He tried to sneer, but his face was slack and paralysed. 'I can't imagine Terry Skellybones'll be very happy about that. How many enemies d'you think Aspitolm can afford?'
'Teryn Valhraeg was already an enemy of Aspitolm,' the woman said calmly. She cocked her head to one side, considering. 'Could they make him into more of an enemy? Would it matter if they did?' She gave a small shrug. 'That's none of my concern. Nor should it be yours.
'What do you mean by that?'
'They gave you to me. For my experiments. That is what you should be concerned about.'
'Wh-who are you?'
She raised her head. For the first time, he saw her clearly. The mask she wore was modelled on the face of a beautiful woman, but around the edges he saw strips of gnarled, withered, liver-spotted flesh. 'Alikada Zinistrari. Of the Mystic Path. A mistress of life magic.'
'Life magic? What you've done to me… it's necromancy, isn't it? Not life magic at all,' said Pebelstien, trying to suppress his rising panic.
Another shrug. Indifference in her voice. 'Life magic. Death magic. Two sides of the same coin. In extending my life, I've used both.'
'Why are you working for the Aspitis?'
'Why do you want to know? Does it matter? Is this knowledge likely to make any difference to your condition?' Zinistrari laughed mirthlessly. 'Better to worry about what I'm going to do to you. What I've already done to you.'
Suddenly, to his horror, Pebelstien realised that he wasn't alone in this new body. As well as the boar spirit who'd been his companion and ally for many years, there were dozens of other souls lurking at the edges of his consciousness. He heard them screaming in fear and horror. 'What have you done?' he asked. 'Why have you done this? What's the point?!'
'An experiment. You were a werebeast. Two souls in one body: the soul of a pig conjoined with that of a human. From your partnership, you gained great strength and fast healing. Seeing that, I wondered: how many souls can I fit in one body? What strange powers would such a creature have? How would I restrain it, control it, put it to good use?' A pause. 'You are a prototype. Proof of concept, at least. I will continue to refine the technique.'
Pebelstien felt as if he were sinking into a mire. At any moment, he thought that he might sink into the depths and become just another lost, tortured soul trapped in this cage of flesh. He knew that he was being watched, that rival intelligences were waiting for him to slip, waiting for their chance to seize control of this body. 'You can't leave me like this,' he said feebly.
'Why not? You have nothing to bargain with. I can do whatever I want to you,' Zinistrari said, examining her nails. 'Know your place, down by the dirt at my feet.'
'Please! I'm begging you!'
'Ugh. You're boring me. Time for a change, I think.'
With that, Pebelstien felt himself being pushed aside. He was no longer in control of his new body. Another consciousness had taken his place. 'What… is your bidding… mistress?' it said in a low, rumbling voice.
'That's better,' said Zinistrari. 'I can work with that.'
This is just so you know Elys's family and friends won't have everything their own way when they're ready to fight a war against Aspitolm. The Aspitis are backed by the Mystic Path (including Agon Hurondus, the main villain of A Hedge Maze Is You) who see the decadent slave-owning empire as a useful cover for their own evil schemes.
Also, the version of Crisithys Pebelstien in this chapter is closer to my original concept of the character: he was a soul-devouring monstrosity with shapeshifting powers, disguised as a fat merchant.
Please vote on what to do next: (Choose one option for each of these three characters: Elys, Yslena, and Mishrak)

[] Mishrak decided to spend some of his vast wealth.
-[] He decided to upgrade his undersea palace, making it a better place for his new followers to live in.
--[] Hire builders, carpenters, decorators etc. to work on the planned improvements.
---[] Pay extra and get them to train his new followers.

--[] Go to Mawroth the mercenary god and ask to hire him.
---[] Hire a fleet of mercenary sailors.
-[] Raise, train, and outfit a professional army.
-[] Pay for warships to be built.
Oh wow, I actually feel bad for Pebelstien, this life-o-mancer is scary! Also this is why you don't do mercenary work for the villains Pebelstien! XD
[X] Elys had a bad dream. (Note: this event will involve the return of an old enemy.)
This feels potentially plot heavy and I'd rather face it now when we are surrounded by people.
So many options for Yslena I need more time, sorry, anyone got an detailed ideas? They all seem like good options!

Let's get this show on the road.
The construct looks unstable, and probably half of the co-inhabitants of the new body would want out. Zinistrari better think on how she'd get the obedient ones to stay in charge, because otherwise killing the construct is as easy as bringing Pebelstein back in control. Something that I imagine one of Teryn's necromancers can easily do.
Ah, well. She's got some time to refine the prototype.

One of each set. I'll probably only focus on one in detail, though. (For example, if you want Mishrak to upgrade his palace, I'll probably only write a few sentences about the building work that's going on while Elys is busy with something else.)

Well, she's not planning to use it for anything; she built the prototype to test whether it was possible to trap a multitude of souls in a single body. It turns out it was possible. Now that's found that out, she'll most likely be trying to find a good use for this new and terrifying form of necromancy. She'll need to do a lot more tests.

The later two seem very reasonable, while the first one sounds interesting.
I found it very interesting that soul manipulation was considered similar to life manipulation. I had expected biomancy to be fully separate from necromancy.
I think Zinistrari is missing out on a idea though. More souls may make magic have more weight, but she's still thinking 'human'. She could be thinking Voltron. A single mobile base, but with a bunch of basically brains attached to it, such that it is vastly more capable of multitasking. A single apparent human that can fight and independently cast multiple spells.
Seems like this vote is winning and I can't think of a better one XD

I can only think of joke votes for Mishrak, but maybe he hires some spies and private investigators? The former for the Aspitis, the latter to find any more thickets of Bad Times like Hedgy's wizard's tower. I can't quite crystallize that in a vote-worthy phrase, though...
I found it very interesting that soul manipulation was considered similar to life manipulation. I had expected biomancy to be fully separate from necromancy.
They are related fields. Maybe not "two sides of the same coin", but that's how Zinistrari sees it.
You can create new bodies using life magic, but without souls they'll only be lifeless husks. You need to get souls from somewhere, either by attracting reborn souls from the Wheel, or by stealing them from the living. Mishrak doesn't have the Necromancy skill, but he knows some Ritual Magic spells he can use to breathe life into his creations.
Kinda like the Harlem Shake, but you have to swish your tail in time with the music.
Anyway... vote closed, I guess. See the vote tally below.
Okay, the good news is that I've written up the first draft of the next chapter. The bad news is that it probably needs several more drafts before I'd consider sharing it with anyone. Right now, it looks like bad fanfiction, like a missing chapter of My Immortal. Ugh. The problem is... now that I'm running two quests that have both got very long and complicated, I'm finding it difficult to switch gears. After I've written a chapter of The Tinpot Princess and am feeling enthusiastic about it, I find it difficult to start writing about Frida's adventures in Sorry, Your Time Travelling Privileges Have Been Revoked, and vice versa. So yeah, I'm still working on the next chapter and hope to upload it sometime this weekend. We'll see how that goes.
Looks like an old enemy will be returning. (By "old", I mean we have seen him for a few months, real time.)
