[w] Argue that it was a limited opportunity and you couldn't talk to him about it beforehand, stuff like this comes with the adventurer territory
"But Tobias, I couldn't tell you about it, if I went up then they wouldn't have let me go back down. And if I gave you a signal they might have seen," you try to explain.
"Why did you have to go in there anyway?" he asks firmly.
"It was suspicious, this whole thing was. And I'm an adventurer, checking out suspicious things is what we do."
"She's not wrong," Mira pipes up.
"You two are the ones who put all these thoughts about adventuring in her head in the first place!" Tobias points an accusatory finger at Mira and Liam, his eyes twitching in irritation.
"Hey, we just came along, she wanted to come with us and be an adventurer!" Mira objects.
"Tobias, please, calm yourself. We are not forcing either of you to accompany us," Liam says soothingly.
"Fine, but I don't want you adventuring on your own again, okay?"
Before you can answer, Jocelyn interrupts, all of the amusement from watching us argue vanishing from her face.
"Much as I enjoy hearing you all bicker, we're here. So if you'd all be quiet and let me explain the situation, it'd be appreciated."
While walking you'd arrived in front of a decrepit looking building not far from where the show had been set up. Jocelyn stepped away for a moment to talk to a man that stepped out. After a few seconds of gesturing to you all, and you specifically several times, the man's mouth slowly opens, before giving a nod and heading back inside.
Jocelyn comes back and leads you all inside the building. It's nothing like the outside. Everything is spotless and clean. A half dozen people are gathered around a table with several maps and books on it, with circles and lines linking various locations together and the books open to pages about said locations. Along the walls are various pictures of the performers in the show, with various notes about them, most of which have question marks.
"Alright, a quick explanation. This is a travelling show that popped up out of nowhere. Normally these things would start slow and build up an audience, but this one was an instant hit. Even some nearby nobles apparently couldn't help themselves and had to go see what it was about. Obviously this raised flags, but it didn't seem important until officials started missing meetings when it popped up nearby because 'they had to know what it was about' then saying it wasn't all that interesting but going again to see if there's something new. We've been investigating this place for the past month. We've come to the conclusion that they have the favour of some kind of Abomination or God that they're using to draw people in."
She walks over to a mostly blank poster on the wall with a question mark on it instead of a face.
"Which is why when Eshani mentioned a voice I became curiou-"
She's interrupted by a grumpy looking man in a fancy suit barging past.
"Rookie! What are you doing here?! You're meant to be investigating!", he barked out, face set in a stern visage.
"A-ah, Sir! One of these people may have come in contact with the Divine, I felt it prudent to bring her here for questioning." Jocelyn ...Stammered? She hadn't done that since she saw you coming out of the men's bathroom, and you're pretty sure that was her acting.
"And why'd you bring her entire entourage?"
"B-because I thought they'd be worried about her?"
He lets out a long sigh. "Rookie," he begins in a warningly, "you just told, at a minimum, three unrelated civilians about a classified operation. Are you trying to get fired? Because that's your three strikes right there. And technically you should be getting four since you don't even know if this girl actually saw or heard the Divine, what if she's lying, huh?"
Suddenly none of the shy rogue, sarcastic listener or no-nonsense police officer you'd seen from Jocelyn is there, replaced only be a terrified girl trying to stammer out an answer to her boss to avoid being fired. Thankfully for her, Tobias accidentally comes to her rescue.
"Excuse me sir, but I don't exactly count as unrelated, as a cleric I have experience with the Divine," he says.
The grumpy man immediately relaxes and gives Tobias a smile.
"Huh, that's actually perfect. All the clerics we've found nearby are incredibly stuck up. If you could offer some help it'd be much appreciated. Guess that's only two strikes for now Rookie, but don't do this again. Sir, please follow me," he asks Tobias, his mood improved.
Tobias stares at you for a second, turns to Liam and Mira, then sighs and follows the man in charge of the whole operation into a separate room. As soon as they're inside Jocelyn lets out a breath she'd been holding this whole time.
"That, uh, didn't go the way I planned. R-regardless," she tries to get back to her authority persona, "knowing what that voice said to you would be helpful for the investigation, so-"
She's interrupted again by Tobias running out of the boss' office in a panic.
"What happened?" Liam asks.
"Well, you know how I don't like Valcians much?"
"Tell me you didn't," Mira deadpans.
Tobias merely looks away. Mira and Liam simultaneously let out a sigh as the boss returns. Liam instantly tries to apologise for Tobias' rudeness
"Ah, sir, I'm unaware of what my companion said to you, but allow me to insist that he did not-"
"Quiet. I don't care about what he said. Where I was born doesn't matter, I was raised as a Rutopian anyway. The problem is that he's just like every other cleric around here," he said with barely restrained anger
He wheels around to face you, making you jump slightly in apprehension when you see his annoyed face staring at you.
"You, you'd better have some useful information for this investigation, the Rookie's job is on the line for one, and you probably don't want to have the government holding a grudge against you."
