Honestly, you were sure you taught your troublesome student better than that. He might have been a quick study, said a lot of things about not wasting energy, but you really have to remind yourself that he's still a teenager. You leaned back against the chair, the ping of magic signalling that your ever determined student had finally returned. Him returning late wasn't out of the ordinary. The different pings of magic made your eyebrows rise near your hairline though.

A snap of your fingers brought one of your magical recording devices on. The sight of your unconscious pupil brought a pang of concern through your heart. It was followed with boiling annoyance because obviously, the stupid twerp spent more time trying to play hero instead of practicing the magic you taught him. You spent some scant minutes cleaning up your little side project. Whatever experiment you had going on here could wait the evening. Not to mention the repetitive reports that tracked nothing of note as of late. Either way, not much work was going to be accomplished tonight and your brat needed to stop dying inside your house.

That's just bad PR with the higher ups. And a dead student too. Bad thing, that.

A wave of your hand and the room, sufficiently suffused with your magic, immediately cleaned itself up. Another snap of your fingers had everything else secured, with your pre-programmed defenses in charge of making sure not even your overthinking student could get through.

It didn't take long to get to your disciple's room. Traps and pitfalls aside, this was still your base of operations. You'd have to be as dense as a brick to just barge through in here. The door swung open out of pure respect, and you strode in because you damn well owned the place.

You spent no time examining your patient. Several glyphs manifested by your eyes as they listed the aberrations present. Both physical and magical. With the diagnosis done, you raised your fingers like a maestro and began to deny the injuries their existence. For a moment, you amuse yourself with the thought of impressing the entirety of the medical world's understanding before your attention was forced into focus.

Brows narrowed as remnants of that type of magic made itself known. Purged from your student's system it might have been, the mere appearance of it could not just be a coincidence. Not long after did you cut the feed of magic. Your student's own magic enough to heal his injuries. Handwaving his pajamas attire unto him, even the memory of his embarrassed face was not enough to sway your thoughts from that particular magic signature.

You'd confront him directly in the morning, but you suppose running a background check with your colleagues shouldn't be too much of a hassle. If nothing came out of this search, then all the better for everyone involved.

"Yes, this is Grimmel. No, I do not care of the time. Yes, I need you to investigate something." You chanced a glance back to your sleeping student's face. And made your choice. "Get me the files for any recently born magical signatures within the city. We might have a problem." And like a switch, your colleague turned from a half dead corpse into the essence of every Michael Bay film ever produced. Loud, over the top, and not enough sense to actually get any details.

"Guess some discipline is in order." You uttered, if only to remind yourself just how much work was bound to come your way with this.

[X] [Backstory] Survivor
I just find it it fits perfectly i mean we attack the hero and display her weaknesses to her

that just something the survivors Whoud do because he had lost his family because he didn't saw his weaknesses

Training Day

Hm. A lot more serious than I characterized her, and a lot more connected. I think I can work with parts of this though, so I guess your reward is that your Mentor now has access to an information network and backup that she would not have necessarily had before.

========

"It's like this every time though! Half the idiots out there are doing only a quarter of what they could be! I'm sick of watching so many prospects wasting their potential like I almost wasted mine!"

You feel your chest hurt for a moment as memories rise up, the memories that you try to keep quiet. Of running, of fighting in desperation, the gates so close, and yet so far away as the shadows close in, and then like a bolt of lightning...

Then your stomach hurts as your mentor pokes you again, prompting you to wriggle back away from her fingers. "Ah! That really hurts Astrid! Cut it out!"

"You were thinking about the past again, and that makes you mopey. You cut it out."

You glare again, then flinch at yet another poke. "Aahaow! I'm not healed damnit! Stop that!"

"You say that like I'm not the one that healed you, you're fine, a few pokes to the stomach aren't going to kill you."

"You say that like you couldn't kill me by poking me in the stomach..."

"Well not if you were defending yourself I couldn't, I taught you better than that." Her smile returns, and you shiver. "And speaking of teaching... We haven't had a proper dance in a while. We should spar this afternoon~"

You swallow, and nod. "R-right..."

--------

She's honest about waiting until the afternoon at least, and you're thankful for that. As much as she had healed beforehand, your injury wasn't exactly light, and you were still in pain until around lunch time. Eating was particularly torturous. On one hand, your stomach was still tender, but on the other, the food was one source of much needed energy with which you could replenish your mana, accelerating the already bolstered natural regeneration and leaving you with a strange sensation like pins and needles in your digestive tract.

As you walk outside into the midafternoon sunlight, you begin to reconsider if you might be being watched. Training can only do so much when it isn't seen by the audience after all so having some attention on your for this could be useful later on.

You think you can hear some music in the background, so that's a good sign at least.

Across the field from you, Astrid gives a wave and you respond with a gimlet stare. She hasn't even drawn her sword yet, partially because she knows that she can draw it faster than you can do anything anyways, and partially because she knows it will annoy you. She knows how to take a fight seriously, but when it comes to you, she never seems to do so, always teasing, tricking, and doing everything she can to make it look like she's not even trying.

She says it's something about learning to control your temper, but while you admit to having had some... Outbursts before... At this point you're pretty sure she just does it for the fun of it. You've never seen her toy with a Shadow like she does with you after all...

You quickdraw your blaster, weapon snapping up, bucking in your hand as you whisper the incantation for a runic shot under your breath, and she reacts with precision, the sword snapping out of its sheath so fast as to be a silver blur. Even composed almost purely of magic by the time it reaches her an instant later, she cuts the magic itself in two, the deadly bundle of energy shearing into component mana strands that pass harmlessly to either side of her.

Then she crouches slightly, and that's all the warning you get before she vanishes from sight, her speed carrying her too fast for you to follow the motion as she swings behind you, right to where the trap you cast with your other hand as you fired has been waiting.

It's a familiar dance, these opening moves. The goal is for you to hold her off as long as you can, and you do so with everything in your arsenal. You know what she can do, and how she can react, but you also know that she keeps herself consistent, paces herself just slightly to keep her from overwhelming you. The goal is not to push you to the limits of your abilities. The goal is to push you to discover new things, to try different strategies, and different powers on her.

For all the years you've been under her care, you've never quite managed to pull out anything she wasn't ready for, but you suppose that when you can one day pull that off you'll have surpassed her anyways.

But you're not surpassing her today, even if you do have a few new ideas you've been working on since this morning...

[X] [Ability] Destined (Determinator)
[X] [Upgrade] Sealing Circle (Replaces Paralysis Trap)
[X] [Upgrade] Battle Continuation+ (Replaces Battle Continuation)

hopefully these three will allow us to be another mark higher then the heroine, to push her to get shit done.

[X] [Ability] Counterspell (Analytical)

I chose the Counterspell because having it means that it takes less Tolerance in order to survive or defeat most magical effects; establishing that we're good at interfering with magic is useful in a setting where everything important is some flavor of magic, and it continues the theme of us being a wizard-mage in opposition to the MC's Swording-mage, a guy who actually knows how magic works.

[X] [Upgrade] Piercing Rune (Add-on to 'Runic shot')
[X] [Upgrade] Create Opening (Add-on to 'Find Opening')

I don't think we'll be able to use the sealing runes to do anything special any time soon unless we use some massive tolerance to boost them back up to being a plot relevant ability, so I chose Piercing Rune and Create Opening. Piercing Rune means that our shots will go through a lot of defenses that they otherwise wouldn't, good for dramatic final blows, and we can combine them with Create Opening to give us a few times to drastically decrease the Tolerance cost of our gun actually being a useful fighting weapon for anything beyond its pretty special effects.

All of these combined mean that we can take some magical tank, (Like, say, our rival...), and defeat them in a single opportune shot. Like, not in any spammable manner, but if we gave it a cool name and took steps to prevent it from being Worfed into uselessness this could be our first finishing move.

[X] [Ability] Destined (Determinator)

Don't know exactly what this does, but it seems important!

[X] [Upgrade] Sealing Circle (Replaces Paralysis Trap)'

Silence is always a good option to hinder opponents.

[X] [Upgrade] Create Opening (Add-on to 'Find Opening')

Why wait for opportunity? Let's make our own!

Yeah, we're kinda going for a more strategic foil to contrast against the straightforward Heroine. But we've also got a stubborn streak, so we're more like her than we care to admit.

Since our rival is going to be pulling powers out of her ass, we should know them so we don't look stupid when she busts them out and ruins a plan.
Combine that with Create Opening to exploit the weaknesses and then finish with a better trap that can't be brute forced as easily.

What makes you think it won't be relevant?

No seriously, it sounds like I missed something in the fight we had that demonstrates that traps/circles are not worth investing in.

Granted, it may be more along the lines of "It's a good tactic, but don't rely on it." The first trap worked fine. It was only after repeated usages that the Heroine could power through it.
