It was mentioned on the discord that breaking tropes can cause other tropes to break, and turn the setting into a deconstruction. Basically break reality. Figured I should tell everyone about it just in case.

We had lived an entire lifetime just using our magic for financial gain when, one day, we were attacked by shadows. Having never fought before, we were grievously wounded, but due to unusual circumstances were able to survive by de-aging ourselves from 70+ to three years old while a stranger - who would go on to take us in and mentor us - came out of nowhere and killed them. Having taken a long look at our meaningless existence, we vowed to do things differently with our second chance. We vowed to make a difference.

Our parents are dead of old age, we have a reasonable motivation, and establishing the fact that older characters can be changed into youths under specific circumstances could be useful for the writers.

- You were once the heir to a renowned mage family and had an identical twin. After making fun of your twin's inferior magic ability by holding back, your sibling had enough and went out to prove that their abilities matched yours just as easily and you didn't need to restrict yourself. Worried, you pursued and discovered that your twin was... somewhat right as they defeated a powerful Shadow on their lonesome while sustaining an ugly injury to their back. You saved them from the lesser Shadows their fight attracted and brought them home to your family, explaining what happened. For your inability to take your training seriously to the point where it got your twin badly hurt, lying to your family, and not living up to your full potential, you were exiled and your status as family heir given to your twin until you proved yourself worthy of it. You met your mentor six months later, and now here you are.

-When you first discovered your magic, you fled your village, believing it to be a curse that would draw the monsters in the dark down on your home. Travelling alone and with what supplies you could, you almost made it to the city before you were set upon by shadows. They were small ones, and you almost managed to fight them off, but the last ones managed a lucky blow that nearly slew you, until your mentor arrived and took you in.

- You were born as an artificial human, whos purpose was either to be servants or lab rats for an unknown organization. Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately enough, you were in the latter category. While life as a guinie pig was pretty horrible and hopeless, it was also probably the reason why you survived when the facility holding you was raided.

You only knew a few things regarding the raid. You knew that the casualties were heavy for both sides and the only surviving artificial humans were you and two others. You also knew that your mentor, perhaps out of kindness or some other reason, proposed to spare and even adopt you and your 'siblings'.

After that, the rest is history. You and your remaining siblings are now living with your mentor. Also, while your body still has a slight aging problem, with the aid of your mentor, you could now see pass the age of 25.

Life is good right now, yet there is still a nagging feeling in your heart. You soon realize that said feeling was the need to repay your mentor. You owe everything you have to your mentor and you need to repay her kindness somehow. Thats why youre patrolling the street these days, silently helping the city. You know this isnt enough, but for now it should do.

-You were very young when your magic awakened, but raised on stories of heroes and powerful mages, you thought yourself ready when you were not, and overreached your abilities. Your family was slaughtered when the shadows invaded the slums, drawn by your reckless magecraft, and you barely stayed alive long enough for your mentor to rescue you and take you in as an apprentice.

-You were raised in an orphanage, never knowing your parents. When you discovered your magical talent however, you saw a way to get out of that life, and sought out a teacher, eventually finding your mentor. She refused at first, but after you tried to learn from her anyways by following her out one night on patrol, you were almost killed by shadows, and seeing that you would eventually die trying to follow her against her will, she decided to take you in and train you instead.

Name is pretty much decided, appearance and backstory are pretty close though... I think I might just leave this for another 30 minutes, just in case anyone wants to make any last minute votes.

Well, regardless of who wins, I'll be writing omakes about the backstories not chosen if the QM hasn't made them already. Who knows, I might even get bits of it canonized or yoink'd for use.
