I do want to start some sort of discussion about feminism in modern works but I'm not sure how.

We *did* have a discussion on how you didn't want to talk out of discussion threads, so....

...I believe it was specifically in regards to "off-topic" business but good point. But I believe I also mentioned that I do find it useful for discussing topics prior to creating them on the boards. Either way I think this would be a useful exception. I think also posting this on the wall at least gives it some transparency.

Also, I forgot how to make PMs on this software.
Ok I have a question since our argument about it is the closest thing to an existing topic I can find. I do have concerns about valid and invalid criticism regarding a creative work, and I want to use 2016 Ghostbusters as an example but I want it to be a discussion about criticism of misogyny vs. criticism of quality, not just turn it into anti-feminism.
The really amusing thing there, Hopes adopted Father, was a Dwarf.

*Nods* So Optimism's more social and has better rounded mental stats, but Hope's the smarter Witch, and probably physically better too.

Yea, I'm imaging Optimism to be much more average in dex and con. Hm, probably 12-13 each, a witch should still be somewhat tough and capable of dodging....
To use an American term (I don't know where you reside) I felt like I was being sandbagged for a single off-hand comment. If GB '16 was for some reason that prone to bringing off-topic conversation that I'm not aware of (I've made off-hand comments elsewhere without derailing threads) then it'd be more helpful and courteous to inform me rather than assume I bothered to participate in those threads.
    Q99
    Q99
Well, it didn't have anything to do with the subject of the thread to begin with, so it itself is off-topic? And really, you shouldn't feel 'sandbagged' for two brief comments that didn't attack you. You can go, "Ok, ok, never mind then." And that'd be it.

That's what I was more or less intending. I kind of imagined people would just look at it, maybe laugh and move on. And let's get real, it was a comparison to the topic matter, even in jest, so don't tell me it's completely OT either.
I don't know if it was like this before, but your sig is borderline unreadable now; you may want to change its font sizing.
The thing about the boys is that Butcher is portrayed as unjustified in the end
The reason billy goads hughie to kill him is because he doesn't want to spend the rest of his life in jail as a cripple. right before his and butcher's final confrontation Hughie flat out tells him "you're speaking like a fucking supervillain."
    Q99
    Q99
Sure, but the problem was painted as *his plan*, not the basic 'hard characters going around and fixing problems with violence.' The way he was beaten was, after all, Hughie killing him.

    LordYam
he was already beaten though. Given his crippled state he couldn't activate the bombs

Which adds to the negatives IMO.
I've been reading your old Anko Quest posts, as it's very interesting and reached the Bandit Kings Arc, where the tengu appeals to their sympathy to not take the fan.

And I just can't believe the players fell for it and started feeling guilty instead of lecturing the bandits, "Did you ever hold back from taking the villagers stuff, when they pleaded that they needed it?"
    Q99
    Q99
They're kinda more tribal lords than simple bandits though they do raid (I chose the name 'bandit kings' because it sounded cool ^^), so probably some would be pretty open to making deals... like, "I will not take X from you, if you pledge to serve in my forces," and stuff like that.
    Q99
    Q99
And of course there's the protection-angle- they take with the intent of coming back to take again, so don't take too much, and if someone else tries to raid, they'll go out to attack the culprits. I'd intended it to be a shades-of-grey situation. Trying to engage one of the lords and convincing them there were better ways would've certainly been a possibility.
You were interested about this back in the day, so I thought that I'd comment about it: finally managed to track down the old as dirt army rules for OMG troops in Warhammer 40k that someone came up with.
So, I've been reading through AnkoQuest, and I've been wondering; if it were to go off of hiatus, how would it be handled? Would it be sent back a few posts, or would we pick up from where it was left off? (I was actually interested in joining, darn it)

Well, if you do decide to restart it, I'd like to know. I actually like talking to people. The fact that you're willing to just rewind to just before we decided the mission makes me happier at the prospect, too. By the way, what did happen to most of the players? Did they just get lost in the forum switch?
    Q99
    Q99
Different people came and went with time, though yea, I guess some just didn't come over. Still, thread 19 here had a reasonable mix, thread 20, especially at the end, didn't. The only remaining social/planning player had RL distractions so wasn't able to do much planning.

Part of it may have also been, Naruto was super big when I started, but there were fewer fans later on and/or people's memory of it had faded some.
I must admit I disagree with your assertion that Crossed is an out-and-out shock comic. Certainly its content is shocking but I don't think Garth Ennis writes purely for shock value, rather I infer that he writes the scenario within the setting to send a message about apocalyptic scenarios in general, and the shock value is just a poor choice of method to convey that message.
    Q99
    Q99
It's intended to send a message, sure, but I do think it's overwhelmed by the desire to be transgressive, and I don't think that message is too strong to begin with.

And it's gone on for more than 100 issues. Less than satirizing tropes, it kinda... wallows in them.

Have there really been 100 issues of it now? I knew that Badlands was ongoing but I wasn't aware it had run that long.

Between all the various titles, yes.
I was reading the Cliches thread and read your rant about time travelers not knowing what temporal mechanics their setting used. Reminded me of an RP I was in where my faction had no idea because they were _given_ plans for a time drive and told they needed to go back to a certain place at a certain time to protect their timeline, but nothing more than that.
    Q99
    Q99
That's an interesting idea. Most stuff has the travelers be scientists or otherwise knowledgeable, so it makes a lot less sense than if one does 'here's a time machine, good luck!' :)

Well, they sort of _are_ scientists... specifically astronauts. Their T-jump drive requires that you go to where the place _was_ at the time. Earth has moved a lot since the era they were headed for. But yes, they are totally ignorant of how the setting's mechanics work. I felt it added a sense of horror to it.
*drive by fist bumps fellow Gold Digger fan* Heh, saw your post in the 'Cliches I hate Thread' regarding Cheetah and Strype getting married 30 issues in. *grin* And yeah, far more interesting watching them post-marriage, I'd agree.
Re Beyond Earth: 'Good news: I got the game on sale!

Bad news: Game no worky for me. It installs, it plays the video, it shows a screen.... with music but no menus whatsoever.'

That's the loading screen. It may take you a while to get to the actual menu, but you should eventually get there. You're basically waiting at that point.

Oh, so I've just been too impatient? ^^;; Thanks for the info!

It COULD be. I've always took a longass time for Civ and some games to load, so your best bet at first is to get a book or snuggle your cat until something happens.

It may flat-out crash on you (mine did until they patched it...), but at least something'll happen.
    Q99
    Q99
Ok, I waited through the screen and, yea, it crashed. Guess I may have to wait for the next patch myself.
...And Anko Quest is -still- running. Man, this is amazing. You are amazing.

    Q99
Hah, yea, once I get something running I tend to go as long as there's interest.

And thanks! Always open for players, btw ^^
