Ever read Perfect State by Brandon Sanderson? It's got a lot of common ground with the scenario you proposed if you were the creator of the universe. It's a short story that's kind of like Sword Art Online meets The Matrix.
If you're interested in looking for something to watch on Netflix, I would recommend a french show called Wakfu. I think you'd like it.
