Prologue, Part Three
"How do I get to the school?" you ask next, this question actually being among the most important ones.
"A magical carriage will come by to collect you the day before the school term starts," Monsieur Delaventure says, "You'll recognize it without a doubt, but just to be safe, it's pulled by magical white horses and is made of white and gold. It also has a charm on it so that muggles won't be able to see it."
"Where should I get my school supplies?" you ask next, not really bothering with the 'magical carriage' part since for all you know, it could be the norm.
"Oh, for that you need not worry, I'll bring you to gather them once we are done with your questions," the mustache is twirled once more. "It's a place called 'Avenue de la Magie' in the depths of Paris' catacombs. You need not worry though, the dead there are among the most pleasant sort!"
...the dead? No, no, it might be normal. This isn't even bothering you in the slightest.
"What should I tell those in charge of the orphanage?"
"Ah, I have already taken care of it. You have received admission to a very prestigious abroad institute, one where the best and brightest go to study. 'L'institute Saint Eclaire'."
"Do I need documentation allowing me to travel?"
"Should it happen that a muggle 'policeman' were to stop you, worry not. Just be pleasant and wait for a teacher to come bring you out. Of course, infringing the muggle laws by itself is a big no-no, and using magic to do so goes against the law, so don't do it at all! A wizard is better than a muggle, thus, a Wizard does not use magic to harm a muggle." He nods most graciously as he speaks, his mustache twirling now by itself.
"Is there a way to speed up learning French magically?"
"Anything is possible with magic, but while you could learn French quickly with magic, you'd also quickly forget it. Best to learn it slow and steady!"
"Can I go earlier?" you ask last, but you make sure the tone of 'wonder and amazement' so typical of a needy eleven years old isn't shown. You are Tom Marvolo Riddle, and you are not a needy eleven years old.
"No, I'm sorry," Mister Delaventure says, "However," he looks around a bit, "I think it is a pitiful thing that a young wizard is forced to live in such shambling conditions. I'll pull a few strings and see if I cannot find you a proper wizard couple who would have no trouble hosting you. As long as you prove yourself to be a charming young fellow this school year, it should be a cinch." He winks, and twirls his mustache once more.
"Thank you," you say as calmly as you can -even though within, just for a tiny little bit, you are giddy at the thought of leaving the orphanage behind. It's just a tiny spark of 'giddiness' but it's there. "I don't have any other questions."
He nods, and holds out his hand. "Then allons-y my dear boy, adventure awaits us!"
You look at the hand. You look at the man.
You grab hold of the hand.
And the next, it's like someone used a corkscrew to twirl your belly-button. Your orphanage room disappears in front of you, and you reappear in a large, underground cave with cackling skulls lit with flames all around acting as walls, while what looks like a perfectly normal -but also utterly busy- street is in front of your eyes.
"Ah, 'L'Avenue de la Magie' is one of the most picturesque places, wouldn't you agree?" he asks, and you stare as a couple of ghosts walk by, wearing old, eighteen century clothes and holding on to ghostly umbrellas.
You find yourself nodding.
"Now, let us head for the most important thing a good wizard or witch needs," the man says, "Hold on to my hand however, for the road is very busy and I'd rather not lose another student this week to the crowd. While I did find him in the end, he had lost himself in the catacombs and a ghost was trying to earn a new playmate," here he winked. "So, follow me."
[X] Seriously, you're not four years old. Let go of the hand and walk next to him.
[X] Hold on to the hand. You don't really like this, but it's needed.
[X] Hold on to the hand. You will never, ever, say it feels kind of going on a shopping trip with family, but it sort of does.
[X] Let go of the hand and slip away at the first chance. So much stuff to explore and find out on your own!
