Another thought on the story mechanics. As far as I understood it the PC can travel back and forward between canon GW and Void Ascension. Would this mean group-travel is open to abuse?

For the most part, they were accepting of the fact that I was busy because I was known to go offline for weeks at a time due to work, family, and other problems whenever real life intruded in my game time.To all of the concerned:
NO, I have not been kidnapped by Jonestown cultists for the purpose of drinking tainted Kool-Aid.
NO, I have not been captured by Roswell aliens for the purpose of anatomical experimentations.
NO, I have not been seduced by Scientologists for the purpose of becoming one of Tom Cruise's lackeys.
And before anyone else asks, I am perfectly alright.
Right now, I am busy with some personal projects and I will have a rather erratic schedule for the next few months.
Anyway, thanks for the concern. I will try to keep in touch.
Doing just fine,

....Left Hand of God Level 1:
LHoG comes in the form of runes on the left hand for the express purpose of granting the blessing of specialization in all weapons and other passive effects. In addition to this, context sensitive events may activate the runes and allow for some rather unique physical feats normally considered impossible, such as, increased time perception, optimal weapons strike maneuvers, boosting existing physical skills, and etc.
At Level 1, this skill grants the following passive and active effects for the Assassin Class:
Specialized Knowledge for all Weapons (Active)
Minor Increased Range and Decreased Recovery Time for Shadow Steps and all Variations (Passive)
- 2X Speed for all Ranged and Melee Strikes (Passive)
- 2X Range for all Ranged Strikes (Passive)
- 1.5X Increased Time Perception (Active)
- Primary Attribute Critical Strikes Doubled Permanently (Passive)
- General Selection of Optimal Strikes (Active)
- Minor Increased Energy Points (Active)
Maximum Time Allowed in Active Effect: 2 hours every 20 hours unless character can consume 30 alcoholic beverages consecutively.
The 2 hours do not need to be spent at the same time, however, recovery will not begin until use of LHoG has ceased for at least 1 minute.
Spending less than 2 hours means that less time and/or less alcohol is needed to recover the LHoG rune skill and its effects.
Increasing Levels of this skill will steadily increase or decrease certain traits and will gradually include more effects.
Note: Maximum level for the LHoG is Level 20
Warning: There are significant social stigmas and issues associated with LHoG if revealed, especially among the religious, noble, and royal factions.
....Domestic Chores Novice Level 1
As the title states, the character gains a better grasp of household and other related tasks from both observation and/or participation of related activities. A number of effects include less time needed to clean, better handling of fragile objects, greater respect earned from commoners, and etc.
At Level 1, this skill grants the following passive and active effects for the Assassin Class:
- Additional Text Commands for Domestic Chores (Passive)
- Specialized Knowledge of all Cooking Utensils (Active)
- Specialized Knowledge of all Washing and Drying Objects (Active)
- Passable Cooking Ability (Active)
- Minor Increase in Favorable Negotiations for Domestic Products (Active)
- Minor Aura of Trust from Commoners (Passive)
- Poor Efficiency at Cleaning (Active)
- Poor Handling of Fragile Objects (Active)
- Poor Recognition of Cooking and Potion Ingredients (Active)
Maximum Time Allowed in Active Effect: 10 hours every 20 hours unless character can gain the Maid's Favor. Then, there is no time limit.
The 10 hours do not need to be spent at the same time, however, recovery will not begin until use of DCN has ceased for at least 1 minute.
Spending less than 10 hours means that less time is needed to recover the DCN skill and its active effects.
Increasing Levels of this skill will steadily increase or decrease certain traits and will gradually include more effects.
Note: Maximum level for the DCN is Level 20.
Warning: May cause greater attraction among commoners and lesser nobles for practical applications. Gender attraction problems become less of an issue for non-PC characters at higher levels of DCN.
"So that is what Level 2 looks like. Not as drastic a change as gaining Level 1 from the start. I suppose that I can only hope for a better increase somewhere down the line. When Ludwig turned around to adjust his stock of potions on his shelves, I immediately put away the purchases into my inventory as I read the achievement message. Once he turned around, he raised an eyebrow at how quickly the items had disappeared, but said nothing.
True.Khaos said:No new material yet? As far as I remember, you're still reposting what what in the main ZnT crossover thread?
I originally made them up at the beginning, but now, I have made an entire list that Setsuna may or may not achieve.EmptyHollow said:Did you create a list of achievements and skills or are you just making them up as you go?
Also, it's nice to see that someone ran with the game mechanic discussed in the Index section. Awesome work. Can't wait to read more.
As soon as I can get past the introductory phase, I can get to more of the clandestine missions I have in mind, once I get past my writer's block.Iron Roby said:Well, it's good writing that you take time to let the plot flow, but it's a little boring to see Setsuna plotting and preparing and keeping up the perfect act without anyone starting to get suspicious in a way that would not allow her to bullshit herself out or anything going wrong. Throw some obstacles in her path that would force her to reveal some of her abilities and make cracks appear on her mask for Louise and others!
Also don't make the noble girls too grateful to Setsuna for catching the mouse. Remember how majority of the ZnT nobles are, most probably think that they have shown her enough favor by simply congratulating her on a good job done, nobles take commoners doing them good service for granted. Unless she starts showing some magical abilities, this "Honorary Noble Status" should never advance post Level 1 and without some magic shown, even that level 1 seems to much right now for simple temporary gratitude.
I was also surprised that you didn't have her buy Derflinger. She doesn't need it just yet, but it would be amusing to have a talking "NPC" sword and to see how are its stats shown in the inventory equip screen.
And why is dear Ludwig living in Tristain in the first place, if he hates it so much?
I have been trying to improve my writing style and I will continue to try to improve myself.LordsFire said:This is an interesting story. The writing style is a bit dry, and I would recommend trying to make things flow a bit more naturally, but it's still an engaging read.

If he is a spy for Germania, then I could see the protagonist helping him. If he thinks in the spirit of RPG "faction quests", then Germania, as the most egalitarian state of the Brimirian civilization, would seem the most like a "good" faction. If not for Louise, then most crossover familiars would be more inclined to support that country, than Tristain. Well, with luck, Setsuna might consider Henrietta as the leader of the "main" "good" faction, she does literally give quests in a very unsubtle way.HecateGW said:

This was going to be a very good day for me.
Easy solution. Except for having a powerful starting player character (playing on the Easy Mode? ), Void Ascension is a graphic MMORPG in style of an old school roguelike, save functions more like a "pause" to make it possible to exit the game and upon character death, is permanently deleted.Larekko12 said:It funny then you realize it's only cause he has the bravado of not actually being there and everything's sucked out of it.

I honestly was not certain how to play the scene in any other way without detracting from the player interaction with the 'game world' and crossing the line into 'generic ZnT familiar crossover' territory.Larekko12 said:It funny then you realize it's only cause he has the bravado of not actually being there and everything's sucked out of it. .

Actually, I am a bit of a fan of listening to Tom Lehrer on Youtube and I suddenly remembered that another story had made use of it while writing out that scene, but I had forgotten who had wrote it at the time.Wow, that's the second recent fic in this site that has the protagonist use the Masochism Tango as a weapon against a tsundere. Did you get the inspiration from the Rodyle's Fate Zero/Sekirei crossover or is it a case of a coincidental parallel evolution?
Good to know. And the moderation is not that strict, it's just a song, not a porn pic or a video or a full lemon text, it's not forbidden to just strongly hint on things and use the "fade into black" technique. Or even just state that sex happened, as long as you don't describe it. As long you keep anything seriously sexual away from lolis and ponies, you will be fine on SpaceBattles, at least according to my experience.
I wont be too harsh as I have noticed that he could have done much worse to my person, when one considers that he was invisible and I did not notice him until he revealed himself to me in a semi-private setting.Don't be too harsh on your terms and make him hate Setsuna, remember, the Hentai-Dumbledore is still unquestionably one of the better ZnT nobles.
It's good to know that my hint at his 'goodness' was noticed in that he does care for every person under his authority including the servants, even if he is a bit of a pervert. You probably know that too, because you wrote yourself: ""I will have you know that anything that harms the students, faculty, or servants will not be acceptable," he said sternly"
While he is being blackmailed, he still had enough sense to think about the servants and gained a bit of my respect in that I realize I am dealing with a person with magic (ie noble) who actually gives a damn. Many nobles would have forgotten the last part, in a situation where they are being blackmailed, "noblesse oblige" or not.
He had enough respect not to appeal to the higher authority aka Louise Valliere, Master of Setsuna, and deal with her directly and not bring in any outside third parties as back up either. In long term, winning his respect, even a grudging one, would be a better option than short term gain.
Calmly?P.S. I imagine that Louise will also not take it calmly, when she finds out that it's actually a man who is using Setsuna's body as a "marionette". It would be very creepy for a culture of their level of development, thinking perverted devils and demonic possessions (like the Na'vi about avatars) and all.
And even that would be better than finding out that their world is a game to the protagonist. That creeps into full lovecraftian existential cosmic horror territory.
I don't being reminded again and again about how I should be doing this since I have been told that I have a very thick head at times.}pRodyle said:I know I harp on this a lot, but this player does not act like a player, just like a normal summon with some occasional references to skill sets and text commands.
As I said, make it to be like a roguelike. Trust me, if you have ever played a roguelike or Diablo 2 in Hardcore mode with a character you have invested a lot of time into, then you start caring about keeping them away from permadeath with paranoia.HecateGW said:I honestly was not certain how to play the scene in any other way without detracting from the player interaction with the 'game world' and crossing the line into 'generic ZnT familiar crossover' territory.
It might or might not become some kind of semi-recurring theme as the 'player' can only have so much of an emotional bond and realistic interaction with any game world, until I realize that it is not just a game, then we get into some interesting interactions.
I don't think that would be that much of a work really, Just make it fantasy pseudo-Germany with Slavic elements, like the other countries are fantasy pseudo-France, Belgium and England. If you take Kirche and Louise's rants as proof, then the national stereotype would be more boisterous and fun loving. Think more Southern Germany and Slavs than Prussia. You could also have an association of free merchant cities with their own representation, like a local Hansaetic League, that would only be accountable to the Emperor directly and not to the local nobles. The fact, that nobility titles can be bought, indicates the existence of notable bourgeois class, that are technically commoners, but can have more power than poor nobles.HecateGW said:I am just surprised that many other ZnT crossovers have not tried to capitalize on that facet. But I suppose that it would be a lot of work to do the necessary world-building to do Germania, its culture, and other facets of that nation any justice.
So many use the greater reliance on gunpowder part for Germania, that I thought it was actually canon? But it is a logical and a good idea, so don't let it's relative unoriginality stop you from using it, especially if you are actually going to do the work of worldbuilding its society.HecateGW said:One thing to note: my interpretation of Germania has a strong core of merit-based, non-mage military personnel, which means that there will be a much greater reliance on gunpowder for ranged capabilities.
Especially if you consider that the school is practically his fiefdom and nothing would really stop him from taking his behavior a few steps further into actual physical territory, at least with maids. It's an age when women have "virtue", but the concept of workplace sexual harassment is not invented yet, especially for female commoners. Compare him with the likes of Mott.HecateGW said:It's good to know that my hint at his 'goodness' was noticed in that he does care for every person under his authority including the servants, even if he is a bit of a pervert.

Actually that part might be more because of selfish reasons than actual respect. I don't think that he would want the youngest Valliere, and thus potentially the other female students, to find out who really is the perverted master of that mouse and backup might spread rumors or if they already know, then be a one witness too many to a potentially humiliating negotiation. Besides I doubt that he really thought that he needed backup in the first place, he probably is cautious to not underestimate Setsuna, but he most likely still is greatly underestimating her.HecateGW said:He had enough respect not to appeal to the higher authority aka Louise Valliere, Master of Setsuna, and deal with her directly and not bring in any outside third parties as back up either.
Super-tsundere? Is it something like a supernova? I think that the term you are looking for is "tsuntsun" and I actually meant feeling real horror, like thinking he is a demon controlling a poor helpless girl, who is still conscious, but can't move or even blink herself or that Setsuna's body was put together from the parts of fresh corpses or something "Oh Founder, what have I summoned into my world!?" like that and then, when she has digested the whole explanation, also the existential "is my world just a game?" horror.HecateGW said:Calmly?
We all know that tsunderes, especially super-tsunderes like Louise, will always be calm.
Right?
Right.
You could have the protagonist use more RPG slang and mode of thinking in his narrative, like calling people NPCs, "combat and path finding AI", "faction quest", "alignment", "realistic graphics", wonder if certain things might be "easter eggs", have her pick up items that don't "belong" to anybody and put them cleptomanically in your inventory, try to sell stuff from your inventory and discover with surprise that many shops only sell and don't buy, take joy in freely jumping over feet high fences and not finding any invisible barriers, take joy in not having loading screens, etc.HecateGW said:In the future, I will try my very best to act more like a player than a normal player.
I will see what I can do about this snip and see if it is possible to alter the scene without changing the flow too much.
As Setsuna contined her walk towards Professor Colbert's office, I could not help but feel that I was getting the better end of the deal, considering that all of the items I promised were fairly easy to acquire and cost very little in Guild Wars, but were considered very expensive to purchase due to the many problems that plagued a Rennaissance era society, economy and infrastructure, especially in the small country of Tristain.Achievement Unlocked:

I agree with this, to a extent. I'd find it interesting for Setsuna to haggle with Osmond about the terms, and laying out the terms between them in full would make it seem less likely some development in the future be seen as 'ass-pull' from a undisclosed fine-print section.Random832 said:I hope you're not planning on keeping the "skip to agreeing to the deal, then explain what the deal was in an author's note" structure in the final version.

Hmmm, I will look into those scenes and see if I can change it to be more streamlined without the RPG elements.Observer said:My only complaint is that he seems too loose with RPG speech. It's okay when it's to himself but he shouldn't have said anything to Osmond.
EDIT: That looked more negative than it was. I love everything else.
The part about denyng royalty is mostly me thinking that I am still just playing a game and that I am going by an in-game Guild Wars joke from my old guild members when my character was appointed guild leader of the alliance of ten guilds of nearly 800 active members at one time.Iron Roby said:The version, when the deal making is actually shown, is indeed much better and what was that about not clearly denying being royalty? Do you plan to make them believe that Setsuna is some exiled royal bastard princess or something? Or a member of a deposed dynasty, who had to get by herself?
Bribe to gain favor as I do realize that Osmond is one of the better nobles and I am basing my judgment on the trope that no one gets to be old in a position of power without having a few dozen aces up their sleeves and the power to back up any of their claims.I understand that the Academy will keep the profits, but will the protagonist then at least get the "base prize" re-compensated or is it just all a bribe to gain favor?
You mentioned being a firm believer in the capitalism, but why even bother, if you could just use the standard MMORPG gp gold, where grinding that is much easier in Guild Wars than in Void Ascension? If the coins are suspicious, then just melt the precious metal.
Only reason I can see for you to bother with exporting items to ZnT verse, is to supply a local army with superior equipment and the population with luxury items. Why are you already doing that when you don't even know which "faction" you want to support and advance in?
I do know of it, but the protag is not actively thinking about such because of how much fun it is to have such 'realistic AI dialogue interaction' in the moment. For the next snippet:
Heh-he, "Suspicious Secretary" "NPC" . Good idea mentioning the targeting radar, it nicely reminds the readers about game mechanics being in use and what their effect would be to normal interaction. Also nice to see the protagonist wonder about tropes and cliches and see him push the limitations of "AI", do you, and by extension the protagonist, know about Turing test?
Yeah, I usually start of as very serious in the beginning and, as time goes on, I tend to start choosing any of the more snarky dialogue options whenever possible in order to see the more interesting reactions. It was also good you showed Setsuna actually having fun, makes it more believable that the protagonist is still just playing a game in his own mind. That kind of a playfully mischievous roleplaying is actually believably what some people would prefer while playing an RPG, given the conversation options. I always pick the snarky ones.
P.S. How is the protagonist interacting in conversations? Are there full conversation options presented to him by destiny or just code words or phrases like in Morrowind or Mass Effect? Or does he actually type in the text like in a text based adventure game?
It does feel forced as I pretty much wrote and deleted this snip at least fifteen times and I am still not satisfied how those lines came about.Rodyle said:And I'm pretty much satisfied, although certain lines feel a little forced, like the "if tropes and cliches are anything to go by yada yada" bit. Otherwise yeah this now feels like someone actually playing an MMO.
