I wake up.
"Eh? Where am I?" I look at my surroundings and only find darkness.
"Oh, I am still dreaming."
But still, what was he talking about?
A voice, my voice, says that in my head, and I remember, I said that when I was talking with Archeo.
I jump and swing my arms frantically when I find him standing behind me without any warning.
"My appearing out of nowhere, it's going to be a thing until you stop reacting so amusingly to it."
"Oh, you brought this upon yourself," I said as I grabbed him and- and-
"...meep."
...I am grabbing him. Like, actual physical resistance and all. I can even feel the fur and everything.
Ah, so you can't talk to me in instantly? That explains some things. Still, you say that it was a joke, but only I can see or hear you.
"I suppose if we aren't simply figments of your imagination, them there's something about you in particular, such that only you can see or hear us."
"Are you going to do this every time you want to talk about anything?" I sigh in defeat.
"You know what? Fine, go ahead."
Well, that topic came out of nowhere. So, blood is important and the brain uses a 'nervous system', noted.
"Indeed, however, this didn't exactly come out of nowhere to me. How I percieve the world around you is in the form of 'scenes,' so to speak. Essentially, you do X amount of things, usually one part responding to us and one part interacting with the physical world in no particular order, and then we see all of that at once. I'm simply responding to what I know at the given moment, in the order that its given to me. Trying to hold these conversations with you is like communicating by courier, only you don't keep duplicates of your letters."
"Oh, really?"
"That is... actually pretty interesting. How are these 'scenes' like? Maybe I can help."
Ok, if you are so advanced, then how do you fight these things? All I know is that of you put some salves or salt in a wound you can prevent infection, a herbalist can make use of herbs to treat most of the things you mentioned and a priest can heal any illness with holy magic after the patient's soul has identified what is damaging him.
"Medicinal compounds, mostly. Over the course of centuries, we have classified hundreds, nay, thousands of diseases and generally know what substances can hinder them enough for our bodies to defeat them. Herbalists are actually on their way to modern medicine, although leeches and user of the four humours is considered quackery in this day and age. Salting wounds is a valid method of halting infection, although stitching a wound completely shut and bandaging it over, with sterile equipment, is generally the go-to if available. Certain ointments are used to treat fungal diseases, bacterial boils need to be carefully drained of the pus, cleaned, and kept from re-infecting, alongside a pill known as an antibiotic in extreme cases, other bacteria can be treated with just the pill. Viruses generally need to be waited out, and you need to maintain your health; eat fruits, drink lots of water, and get rest. When you have the runs, you need to stay hydrated, or complications could arise by the lack of water in your system, and for all of them; stay clean. Cleanliness is your greatest defense against disease. Magic is actually beyond us here."
"We already do the majority of the things you describe, even though I have never heard of something called 'a pill', or 'an antibiotic'. About drinking lots of water, people who do that tend to get sick and die. But I suppose that is not a problem if you boil the water, is it? ...I just realized I can revolutionize medicine with this."
"What does sterile mean?"
Eh, thanks?
"In regards to not dropping your money, that is."
"Oh, well, thanks then," I said as I patted Archeo on the head. I could hear him purring from the affection.
Well, you are saying it to me so you would need to explain to me how to write it, not how to say it... wait until I learn how to write, ok.
"... I'm sorry, I'm used to people seeing my name before hearing it, not the other way around. I'm any case, writing would be immensely useful indeed."
"No problem, how many people know how to read over there? In here I would say the only way a commoner can learn is becoming an adventurer."
I sit in a wooden chair. Yep, I can control my dream. Nice. Archeo jumps into my now available lap at this.
"You know, now that we don't have to worry about anyone hearing us, I want to tell you something."
"I am kind of a coward. I always have been. The only reason I am doing this adventure thing is because my father always told me stories of the places he saw when he traveled to war." I think of a mug of ale and it appears in my hand. Good.
"He always looked excited when telling me about that sort of thing, but when I got older I noticed that, well, I don't know. It was something like envy or sadness the way he told them." I take a sip of ale, it tastes like nothing, damn.
"...I made it my personal challenge, I was going to become what he always wanted to be. And once he disappeared, I felt like I owed him that much. The whole 'is the only way I can gain my life now' was just a cheap escuse."
I get up and look at him.
"I am telling you this because if you can see all I think, you would end up knowing that sooner or later."
And about the last part, isn't it a little too late now? Both I and Alax will be falling asleep at any moment.
"The issues of relying on a relay; what I see last can often be the first thing I need to respond to."
"Oh, I can you tell me more about how it works?"
...The sky isn't getting back to normal.
You, you can fix this, can't you?
"That's a mighty big cloud bank, I guess we should be expecting a storm in the morning, huh?"
"That wasn't any storm. There were shadows blocking the moons and only I saw them. I don't know what you did but you put them there."
Ok, a plan for what? And I'm sorry for saying this, but you haven't been all that helpful.
"Well, he hasn't, at least. I'm pretty sure I've been of help."
"Yeah, you are helping a little with medicine but the other cat, Vsh, taught me how muscles worked and told me to boil the water. You are the one who has talked the most, though." As I say that last part I pat his head again, this cat is pretty cheerful.
He, what?
"If you don't know how to make them yourself is what I was saying. You understood the intent without my input."
"I didn't understand what you were talking about at that moment and I don't know what you are talking about now. What is 'them'?"
"We are here." Said Alax as she dropped me on the ground. I looked to my left and saw the iron rings from the mail torn open. I will take note to never make Alax angry.
"I would express similar sentiments, but she doesn't know I exist."
"I could try to tell her, but I am pretty sure she would think I am crazy. How much control do you have over your 'bodies'?"
Then a shadow appeared next to him, I wonder which one is him?
'yea buddy im new to this as well just don't worry we all have your health as our main priority.'
Oh, it's the one that talks like if he is in the middle of a panic attack.
Good to know you are my friend, buddy.
I looked at my surroundings, it seems I can control this place however I want.
I look at Archeo and the shadows.
"So, what now?"
