SV Runs A Shadowrun Cartel! [DEAD}

Actions
-Social: Tour around the city. Looks for information about local economy & market. Where to buy and sell what, comparisons of price range & quality, who's running what business, and stuffs. ¥10000.

Result: 6 Successes

The local economy is shit, and the markets when talking about international elements are focused on Nigeria's rich oil wealth. Even so, Lagos has a thriving black market, with the markets selling anything from guns to siphoned oil and drugs from nearly every part of the planet, the markets and other back-street merchants can get you just about anything, especially as the Corporations use Lagos as a dumping and testing ground for all sorts of gear and other materials.

Apapa and Ikeja have the best markets, though one should be wary of the Ikeja markets as Shariah Law is dominant there, and the penalties...well, look up Shariah Law in relation to drugs and other intoxicants, and that's what's going to happen to you. Best get your product to Apapa since it has a good chance to be resold further on in another country.

-Combat: Take along some member of the protection gang for bodyguards. ¥5000.

Result: This is a freaking auto-success, because why the hell would you actually go alone?

-Research: Black Lotus life cycle and possible improvement of cultivation technique/farming output. ¥5000.

Result: 3 Successes

Black Lotus lifecycle, apart from the high dependence on ambient magic levels, according to the ancient leather and parchment tomes you used to find the Plateau of Leng in Tibet, is fairly simple but covers a number of bases.

Black Lotus plants send out runners or if the ground cannot allow them to send out runners, turn their leaves into either a fleshy fruit that is irresistible to animals of any kind or some kind of floating pod that catches and drifts on the wind. Once it settles, it burrows underground and takes root, sending up a shoot that quickly begins to mature.

Flowers begin to bloom after 5 days, but within hours of breaking the surface the planet will already begin to grow branches covered in its distinctive fleshy flowers that are so prized for their properties both as a drug and as a magic enhancer.

The plant's root system is deep and wide, aggressively attacking other Awakened plants by sending runners into the target plant, becoming a deadly parasite that eventually kills the host plant, breaks it down, and allows for additional Black Lotus plants to grown in it's place. An Awakened tree could easily become a small patch of Black Lotus if one was within a few meters of the tree.

Cultivation of Black Lotus therefore should focus on promoting Runner growth as well as physically planting the flowers instead of allowing them to turn into fruit or drift off on the wind. This means that large, open fields are needed, or at the very least a large hydroponic set up. Thankfully, you could set a Black Lotus flower into a bed of liquid human waste and it would take root and grow in it, solidifying the ground by converting liquid into a solid byproduct that actually could be used as a fertilizer.

You just have to leech out the liters of nectar the ground has been soaking in to take advantage of such properties.

-Purchasing: Cooling/preservation/storage equipments (rated for biohazard). ¥5000.

Result: 4 Successes

You secure some old medical-grade equipment that should allow for long-term cold storage of Black Lotus Flowers and Fresh Black Lotus Leaves.

(Acquired Old Medical Cold Storage Equipment: You can now harvest Black Lotus Flowers.)

-Social:
Take a walk through town and look for the downtrodden and desperate, the ones that even the other gangs look down on and ignore, then make them an offer. We need cheap, disposable labor, and they need cash and/or drugs. We have the latter. ¥5,000

Result: 3 Successes

You reach out to the slumdwellers and it turns out that after securing a section of the slums as your territory, you have plenty of workers willing to do so for a pittance or the high provided by Black Lotus.

In fact, it's highly unlikely you could exhaust this source of cheap slave labor simply because people are that desperate for work and food in Lagos.

(Acquired Slave Labor: -¥300 Or -5 Fresh/Dried Black Lotus Leaves or -10 Shredded Lotus Bags per month. +3d6 to Purchasing Actions.)

Spend some time training up combat skills through friendly sparring with someone from our 'Protection' gang. ¥5000

Result: 1 Success

You don't learn any fancy martial arts, but you now know how to wield a machete in a particularly nasty way.

(+2d6 to Personal Combat Actions)

Just how lethal is Lotus Nectar? Try to find the smallest amount necessary to kill whatever vermin or stray animals we can get our hands on, then use that to estimate human lethality. ¥5000

Result: 5 Successes

Take a fine sewing needle, dip the very tip in Black Lotus Nectar with the lightest of touches.

Take one live Devil Rat the size of a housecat, and prick with the needle anywhere on the body.

Watch as the Devil Rat, a vermin species world-famous for it's immunity to poisons and venoms of all kinds, convulses and screams in hideous agony, foam pouring from the tear ducts, the tongue swelling, blood being vomited and shat from both ends of the animal even as a buttery smell starts to seep from it.

It's still convulsing and twitching, but the Devil Rat died minutes ago as you cut open the skull and find its brain a soupy mush.

It took the Devil Rat two hours of agony to die and is because of it's legendary resistance to poisons and toxins.

A human exposed to that same amount would die in two minutes.

-Purchasing: Find somewhere cheap that we can run to if our current hideout gets screwed. ¥5000

Result: 0 Successes

Finding somewhere cheap to run to in Lagos? Easy.

Finding somewhere cheap and safe in Lagos? Impossible.

If the gangs or kingdoms don't hunt you, the Corporations will just hit you with a guided missile or drone.

Lagos isn't safe. It is the living opposite of safety. So you should focus on getting rich enough to make somewhere cheap and safe for you and the others.

Pay a mage to Assense Jak and determine whether or not he is Awakened. ¥13,000

Result: 10 Successes

Turns out you have talent to be an Adept. Congratulations.

Actions
>Social: obtain boots-on-ground perspective of life in Lagos. Pay special attention to neighborhood demographics (phenotype and language), getting a feel for who and what is considered normal for any given area; if things go topsy turvy in the future, it might be all the advance warning available. Try cultivating relations with some reputed guides/interpreters, while we're at it. 10,000¥

Result: 6 Successes

You quickly pick up on the signs that a fight is about to break out between gangs from the way citizens look at each other and at the people with guns. You know how to speak the bizarre pidgen language that is unique to Lagos, as well as a string of other languages that spoken in a city where over a hundred languages might be spoken in just one district.

Everyone wants the same thing, money, and they will charge you for everything and anything, all so that they can get what they know they deserve. This is a city where everyone expects to be paid, and their outstretched hands promise you that not paying will lead to trouble in subtle and obvious ways.

Neighbourhood demographics are chaotic and impossible to tie down in patterns, same with languages spoken.

You know your way around the city, ROB made sure of that, and there's no such thing as a trustworthy guide or interpreter in this city.

>Combat: "drive defensively"; escape and evade where feasible, but steel the mind (and steady the hand) to do what needs must. 5000¥

GM: This makes no sense to me. Money refunded.

>Research: Experiment if a sample of Black Lotus can grow in a small, controlled environment of sewage mixed with dirt (possibly in a toilet bowl, if no other, better option presents itself with current resources). 10,000¥

Result: 10 Successes

As it turns out, it can grow in such conditions, quicky easily too and since the second toilet is backed up...again, you grow the plant in there in lieu of a proper botanics lab as you figure out the adaptability and hardiness of Black Lotus in any conditions.

Doesn't stop everyone giving dirty looks in the morning when they find that you're growing a Lotus in a toilet.

"Damn it es6! We finally have decent toilet and you have to fill with the plant! I thought the Lotus has gone borg or zerg on us for a moment."

With a suffering sigh, Es6 planted hand on hips and stared --with great dignity-- at the pair of overrun stalls.

"In my defense, the plumbing of these stalls still sucked (or rather, had no suction) at the time. Also, I couldn't find a big enough bucket or wheelbarrow to safely rig together without leaks. Also-also, we didn't have a lab. A botanics laaaab."

A familiar tilt of the head followed.

"Though it is heartening to confirm that the 'waste processing front' idea was definitely on the right track. And on the plus side, besides some new leaves and a shitton of sludgy nectar--"

Es6 refrained from kick-tapping the contaminated toilet bowl closest to him, though it was obvious the reflex was only narrowly averted.

"--now we have options for a hydroponics setup." Another sigh. "I'll get these moved. Eventually."

Gram looks around at the gathering. "Okay, as said. Good News & Bad News. From my end? As we know, The Area is SHIT! LITERALLY! Thankfully we can buy the area for Cheap. It looks like we can do the Option of building a Massive Sanitation Recycling Place to then turn the Shit to Fertilizer, Distill out the Useful chemicals to use and sell, and possibly make Bio-fuels to run the damn place. I only added Bio-fuels to help our own Independence."

"The HQ is in better shape, considering it is one of the few buildings built on solid land."

"With the 'Waste Management' angle, we can do a lot."

Es6 couldn't help it: he had to raise his hand like a schoolkid.

"Annnnnd building such a facility isn't going to draw more attention to us? You have to admit, that's decidedly non-gangster behavior when one comes into new territory and money, even if there's that monthly Saturday clean up affair. Someone's gonna be curious and come snooping...more than usual."

Es6 crossed his arms as he settled backwards more deeply. "Not that I don't support the course at all, but, devil's advocate."

Gram nodded and looked back to voice his thoughts. "Sometimes.. no? ALL the time you have to spend money to make money. Nothing in life is free! We have to build up some kind of Infrastructure to protect our product. Better to do it while we have our resources and we have some breathing room and word fully spreads about the Black Lotus and some of the Gangs or ROB forbid, some of the Corps turn to us."

"I say we turn our hand to 'Waste Management & Land Reclamation'. This stuff chokes out Magical Plants, right? The 'Awakened Jungle' looks like a good source of growing materials."

"We will need to store all the Nectar residue, I am sure we can find uses against our enemies and any local pests."

"Cannot avoid attention forever. I mean, we got some Lovecraftian super plant here. Any business we would do would gather attention. But attentions from being the reclamation guys should be less dangerous than the attention given to 'guys with magic-doping, ultra-toxic, ghould-feeding, plant'
"I say we turn our hand to 'Waste Management & Land Reclamation'. This stuff chokes out Magical Plants, right? The 'Awakened Jungle' looks like a good source of growing materials."
I'd say store the latter part for later once we are more established. I rather not revealing so much capabilties too fast.

"We will need to store all the Nectar residue, I am sure we can find uses against our enemies and any local pests."
"Given just how lethal the Nectar is turning out to be, I think we need to worry more about disposal than storage. We could fill a single jar and it would be enough to kill everyone we meet. The real question is what we do with the rest of it."

"Given just how lethal the Nectar is turning out to be, I think we need to worry more about disposal than storage. We could fill a single jar and it would be enough to kill everyone we meet. The real question is what we do with the rest of it."

Gram replies. "That is what a 'Waste Management' facility is for. Recycling Waste to Saltpeter & Ammonia & a small power plant, by Burning stuff perhaps. More studies is needed."

Gram mutters "There is the bit of making fertilizer, ash and calcium and possibly vertical farms, Hydroponic buildings?"

"Given just how lethal the Nectar is turning out to be, I think we need to worry more about disposal than storage. We could fill a single jar and it would be enough to kill everyone we meet. The real question is what we do with the rest of it."
"Well, there's always the option of selling some, but then it might end up in hands that want to kill us. There's the option of using it, but our guys aren't exactly on standby for a push-n-grab right now, and preparations for those tend to telegraph something besides. There's the option I find fun and am probably gonna pursue anyway, but I'd still have to build the things, and there's little that can prevent a lucky pickpocket outside besides not having it on you to begin with..."

And so Es6 settled for shrugging.

You make in-roads into the Lagos City Council via a few clerks and secretaries, making a few charitable contributions and a taste of the Black Lotus to provide an entryway into the city government.

You won't be influencing the City Council, but you will be able to keep a finger on the pulse of the government, since the City Council is dominated by a mix of Corporate interests and those of the Nigerian Kingdoms.

(Bureaucratic Whispers will now be added to each Pre-Turn post.)

Research: Ghouls and Black Lotus. The ghoul thats been bothering us, offer to give him more black lotus on the condition he let us perform a few tests. Other effects are also to be studied, of course. 10,000

Results: 3 Successes

The testing is fraught with danger as part of the testing does include having to starve the ghoul and you narrowly avoid getting bitten. But the report you give to your compatriots is distinctly heartening.

Black Lotus does not actually addict Ghouls, instead their strange metabolism converts the magical plant into proper nutritional sustenance. A single leaf provides sufficient nutrition for a ghoul over a 36-hour period, with the only side-effects being a strong scent of...honey? Yes, honey, on the ghoul's breath, but this is counter-acted by crushing the leaf and mixing with a little cane sugar, or mixing that same crushed leaf in a cup of palm wine.

...This must not be allowed to come out as public knowledge. Asamondo, the Ghoul Kingdom, is a stone's throw away from Lagos and the current queen is well know for having particularly important guests somehow become afflicted with the HMHVV contagion. For now, you hire the ghoul, who is more than willing work for Black Lotus leaves.

(Black Lotus effect on ghouls discovered: Black Lotus is a foodstuff!)

You purchase various pieces of lab equipment, all of it old and obsolete ranging back several decades but you don't need and probably can't make use of a cutting-edge lab in a place where you can watch shanty huts suddenly collapse and sink into the mire as their inhabitants desperately try to swim for the makeshift piers and walkways.

God this city is disgusting.

As it stands, you have a proper lab, so you can do proper research.

(New Infrastructure Acquired: Obsolete Lab. You can now perform riskier research.)

When you walk into that meeting with a proposal to convert a portion of Shomolu into a combined Sanitation and Chemical Reclamation plant, they don't believe you, but then you start bring out maps and other elements of the presentation and slowly you begin to sway their opinion. By the end of the meeting you have secured contact details with a number of experts who know what you need to begin work, starting with the structure of the plant to avoid expensive and time-consuming land reclamation from the swampy ground...

(You now have expert advice on the plant. The plant's future cost has been significantly reduced.)

The plant will be a massive project, requiring the eviction of thousands from their shanties before planting a network of concrete piles that will support the massive plant above the swampy ground, which while could be dried out with cofferdams is below sea level and unsuitable for a canal (Lagos cannot support a canal anyway) since using the lagoon to turn ships around means dredging the lagoon and also widening the lagoon mouth which is pretty much impossible (this is due to the fact that the lagoon is relatively shallow and also is blocked by the bridges onto Victoria island) but it should be feasible to install the necessary pipelines to the ocean.

It's not going to be cheap, even with the expert advice and consultation you've acquired.

Like, really, it is not going to be cheap.

Plenty of people in power take notice when a seemingly small gang suddenly buys up as much workers and materials as possible before engaging on a massive construction spree, reclaiming land with refurbished pumps and earthen dams that are replaced with concrete where possible, large heavy blocks being locked together to form the skeleton frame and raised sections that will be carrying the heavy equipment and machinery that will be reclaiming valuable chemicals, even small amounts of oil, from the steady sea of garbage and shit that flows through Shomolu into the polluted lagoon.

It taxes your slave labor workforce to the limits, and you have to shoot a few people attempting to sabotage your project out of spite, but the facility is completed before the month is out. What other people don't know is that the hydroponics and aquaponics facilities are all carefully hidden and disguised, allowing you to massive increase your harvest yields, and the fact that it's a chemical reclamation plant and sewage treatment center means that no-one will be suspicious of the need for the workers to be wearing old chemical protection suits with home-made gasmask filters.

(New Infrastructure Built: Test Reclamation/Treatment Plant: +¥50,000 per month in sales of reclaimed chemicals and crude oil. Smell of Shit actually goes down near your hideout, making it almost worth opening a window. Seriously, don't open a window, the snipers have RPG's.)

When you can sell drugs in open-air markets, you don't need dealers, you need a market stall. And that is exactly what you do, setting up a guarded stall in the main market next to ones selling barrels of crude oil, crates full of RPG's and assault rifles, and even other drugs. And before long you have buyers as the curious take a baggy of shredded leaves for a pittance, and then soon after return to buy a bag full of dried or fresh leaves for a much higher price as word of mouth works its magic.

You quietly restrict the supply, making the more potent fresh leaves less common than the dried leaves, and those less common than baggies of shredded leaves and you make a killing.

You pretty much empty your stock this month, and there's people wanting more, lots more, people who use magic, and foreign people as well.

1: Shredded Black Lotus mixed with tobacco is not only as trippy as Weed, but also animates the smoke you exhale.
2: It turns out that dried Black Lotus makes a damn good tea. Absolutely no drug effects, it's just a damn good tea, like award-winning tea, tea that probably would have come from the spout of a Tea Engine if Agatha Heterodyne made such a device. In short, it's really good tea.
3: Crushed Black Lotus mixed with Palm Wine is amazing and trippy.
4: You are very happy that you don't remember what happened last night.

Purchasing: Take advantage of the new 3D Printer to create a better supply of weapons for our gang. It doesn't need to be top-of-the-line gear (and probably shouldn't be, to avoid drawing attention), but we can at least update to something that wasn't produced last century. Throw in a dart rifle and a supply of injection darts for Jak's personal use. ¥5,000

Results: 9 Successes (Your dice exploded. *Sigh*)

You are able to make some good knock-off .45s, AKs and some pretty good shotguns thanks to the glut of spare parts for things that the 3D printer can't print, like springs, but the thing that really gets everyone's imagination is the melee weapons. Seriously, what is it with Africa and machetes? The comes the spears, the Rungus, the Sjamboks, the Mambele Knives, a frightening throwing weapon called a Kpinga, and a strange tomahawk-like weapon called a Nzappa zap that you had to briefly look up on ShadowSea (It's not just shadowrunning, it's also a wikipedia!) to find out was actually real.

Let's just say that your gang's recruitment goes up a lot, your territory expands, and your slave workforce ends up fishing out a lot of dead bodies from the intake cistern.

(Small territory upgraded to Medium Territory. You own nearly 50% of Shomolu!)
(Medium Gang upgraded to Very Scary Large Gang. Anyone attacking you is going to be very intimidated. Combat Action bonus upgraded and locked at 12d6 because I think that's high enough.)

Magic: Begin exploring my potential as an Adept, and the possibilities it offers for a future assassin. Make meditation and exercise a part of my daily schedule, and start looking for possible instruction material. ¥10,000

Results: Failure (2 Successes, needed 4)

As it turns out, when you have markets that sell knock-offs as well as originals, it is extremely hard to find authentic stuff sometimes.

Social: Set up an account with the Hawla we have contact with. ¥10000.

Results: 1 Success

You quickly set up an account with the Hawala you contacted last month, ensuring that apart from numbered accounts in Switzerland, you have access to liquid funds across Africa.

Set up a patrol schedule of the territory to make sure it remains guarded from other gangs. ¥10000.

Results: 8 Successes

Really, there's little chance of anyone trying to duck out of this, not when their own paychecks are at stake along with the territory that needs to be held. Roving bands of your boys and men, marked with the image of the Black Lotus in tattoos and scars, aggressively force out other gangs with a mixture of guns, machetes and other weapons from your territory.

Refurbish property found on the outskirts of town, ensuring drying, farming and shredding operations have the necessary equipment, staff and supervisors. ¥10000.

Results: 3 Successes

You manage to get the ruined colonial mansion refurbished to a state where it won't collapse into a ruin, although you have to shoot a few people to ensure that you don't lose several precious Black Lotus plants to thieves and greedy workers hoping to use the plan to become Lotus farmers themselves.

Here, you establish a moderately sized farm, facilities with drying racks, and hand-made shredding machines for creating Shredded Lotus. There's even old industrial fridges to store pruned flowers to act as seedcrop.

With these facilities, you should be able to supply a fairly significant amount of product once the first crops come in.

(New Infrastructure Established: Outskirts farm. +1000 Black Lotus Leaves, +200 Dried Black Lotus, +600 Shredded Lotus.)

Social: Befriend the hyenas. Try training them into useful duties. See if we can attract more. ¥5000

Results: 4 Successes

The pack of hyenas that was hanging around you quickly work to collar and then train. As expected of wild animals capable of turning a Troll skull into mush, they are difficult and their Awakened nature makes them naturally mischievous. However, you manage to train them into serviceable guard and attack animals, and feeding them is quite easy.

What with them being scavengers.

You also manage to attract and tame packs of feral dogs, including a rather impressive-looking Hellhound, and your gang takes advantage of the new additions to run fighting rings where the dogs are pitted against humans and metahumans alongside your own training.

By the end of it, you are able to establish specialised dog and hyena patrols to intimidate anyone who doesn't respect your cartel's authority.

(New Asset Gained: Pack Patrols. 7d6 to Combat Actions. Will not run from determined opposition. Very intimidating.)

Purchase: Upgrade the lab. ¥7000

Results: 5 Successes

You make a few enquiries and soon manage to arrange for delivery of a wide variety of more advanced lab equipment and computers that you place into an expanded laboratory space, allowing you to conduct more in-depth and informative experimentation.

(Lab upgraded to Decent Lab. Now you can actually do proper research.)

Magic: Try learning some magic. ¥7000

Result: 5 Successes

You manage to learn the Fireball spell!

(+5D6 to Personal Combat Actions.)
