Puella Ludio Homura Magica (PMMM/Roguelike-Inspired)

While grinding multiple skills would be nice, the psychological issues with cutting herself are… worrisome. We're talking about Homura, here. We also need to know how obvious the skill is. If it's without any special effects, we can just as easily heal freshly cut grass, presumably.

The psychological issues are tied in with self-inflicted pain and injury. My plan is only to do so if we can make it so it causes no pain at all. Her power makes it so all physical injuries just deal HP loss -- there's no torn flesh, no blood. All it would be is watching numbers change. Otherwise, I'd absolutely agree with you, and have previously. It's only the idea of having something that can completely stop the pain that has me looking to implement it at some point.

It *does* sound a little awkward.

"So, Homura, what did you do yesterday?"

"I- I spent all day cutting myself."

Do you think it's psychologically feasible to get Homura to take advantage of her lich state at some point? The idea behind that is that if she absolutely has to inflict injuries on herself, she at least doesn't need to be in her own body while doing it. I figure the way to convince herself to try something like that is that she really, really wants to be less of a liability in battle, and her unique skills are particularly suited for this. She has a perfectly ethical source of bodies to use for combat, as well as an inventory to keep her own safe and store, transport and deploy the combat spares.

Consider investigating things like [WAND OF INFLICT LIGHT WOUNDS] to find an effect that does raw HP damage without as much physical trauma?

(I though about a [WAND OF REMOVING HIT POINTS], but rejected it when I realized it'd probably reduce our max health rather than reducing our current hp so we can heal. But if that's the case, would there also be a [WAND OF ADDING HIT POINTS] that'd directly increase our max health?)

You know, you don't have to use numbing cream to not feel pain.

As Sayaka knows very well, if you do it right...

Like a candle?

That would be my choice too.

Or simply train by punching and kicking trees.

That'd probably boost Str and/or Dex as well as leveling Unarmed; and Unarmed is traditionally one of those things where it can be potentially OP if enough effort is put into it, and when it doesn't it's usually still viable.

Potentially training at least one stat and three skills at the same time sounds pretty nice to me.

Again, [GAMER'S BODY] means that Homura doesn't suffer physical trauma. It's why she didn't have a bloody hole in her ear late in the first loop, after she shot herself. She only takes HP damage.

It's been long enough, so I'm calling the votes. The winning choices were:

[9] [HEAL] (starts at 10/20 EXP)
[9] Stay with Mami and Madoka...
-[9] Tell Madoka more about your history-that-never-was, though relatively briefly. Try to work through the story while keeping your emotions in check.
--[9] "It's... it's what I wished for. When I transferred into your school, Madoka... you said I should try to be as cool as my name, but I couldn't. I was... I was pathetic. Then, when I was... The two of you saved me from a witch. Mami was the cool, kind senpai, the sort who makes you feel like someday you might be like her, and she'll help you get there, and Madoka was... the first friend I ever really had. I was the normal girl who was friends with magical girls, with heroes, and I'd never been happier. Except then... then Walpurgisnacht arrived, and everyone else... Mami had already died, and then Madoka told me that she was happy she became a magical girl, because it meant she was able to save me, and then she fought it and... and... and when I found... that's when I made my wish, that I could go back and have the power to protect you, the way you protected me, no matter what."
--[9] "Except I'm not a very good magical girl. I can do a lot of things, but I don't have any of the stuff normal magical girls have automatically. I don't have a weapon, I don't know how to fight, I'm weak and slow.. I've been a magical girl for maybe two weeks, and I've... I died twice already, and I can't even beat one witch without-- I thought I knew how this witch was dangerous, because last time there were fumes that caused Sayaka--"
-[9] Shake your head, and apologize -- it's been a trying night for everyone, and here you are, focusing on the bad. You might be completely useless in a fight, but you can summon things. You can be helpful. So... you'll be helpful.
-[7] Offer to help them with their homework. You can summon the textbooks and the answer keys for the assignments, to help them. Or even for them to copy from, if they want.
--[7] If they don't want to do homework, then have snacks and tea, and light conversation.
[9] Before everyone heads out for the night, investigate the cost and efficacy of summoning a "Potion to ensure peaceful sleep" for each of you. If it's viable, summon one for each of you. Today was bad, and if you can't protect them in a fight, then at least you can protect them from bad dreams.
[9] Promise Mami that you'll get her the potions of mana tomorrow afternoon. It's only a few hours of brewing, and... you'll try to figure out something to deal with the taste.

In the next update, Homura will attempt to:
* choose the quest reward skill: [HEAL] (10/20).
* tell Madoka about Homura's pathetic history and her current weakness.
* apologise for being negative and completely useless in a fight, on this very trying night.
* make herself useful by summoning.
* offer to summon textbooks and answer keys to help, or to be copied from.
* if they don't want to do homework, offer to summon snacks, light tea, and light conversation. [1]
* before everybody heads out, look at cost/ efficacy of a "potion to ensure peaceful sleep", and summon if viable. [2]
* promise to get Mami her potions tomorrow afternoon.
* promise to figure out something to deal with the taste.

[1] Which you already are having, honestly. The tea, at least. Mami's sure to have snacks around somewhere.
[2] What's the cost/ efficacy threshold for this, just so I don't have to pause the update in the middle for you to vote on whether or not to summon it?

It ought to work for a full night's sleep, allowing restful, REM-capable sleep that's free from nightmares. It isn't something that will knock someone out, or prevent them from waking, nor should it result in "drugged" sleep -- we're using magic, rather than just summoning medication, for a reason. If it costs more than 30 MP(!), don't summon.

-[1] Consider and discuss what you three did well against ROBERTA and GOTZ, and what could be improved? What could you do next against swarming familiars? What about flying familiars? It was unlucky it was both this time, but not unlikely it'll repeat at some point. Then there's ROBERTA to think on. She was flying far away. You have two ranged fighters (M&M), and two close range fighters (you and Sayaka). How can the latter participate when it's only ranged enemies? What if the next witch is the other way around, only brawling familiars and witch? Mami is a veteran, but neither you, nor Madoka, nor Sayaka have that distinction.
--[1] If they don't want to revisit the fight because it still hurts or other reasons, then have snacks and tea, and light conversation. Maybe some homework? You'll have to do it either way, and misery loves company, not to mention the added benefit of doing homework together. If push comes to shove, You can cheat by summoning answers, but let's hamper our brains more than necessary. Studying does train INT, whereas cheating… doesn't.

"Oh," says Madoka softly. She looks at her hands, the new one clasped in the old one, the two of them nearly indistinguishable. "Thank you for saving me, this time, Homura-san."

Once the first secret is told, they just keep coming, a flood of words rushing past the dam of your mouth. "There's... there's no need to thank me, Madoka-san, it's... it's what I wished for, this power." And then you're off on your tale. Your first meeting, the first first meeting when you transferred into Mitakihara Middle School so long ago, when Madoka rescued you from the overly friendly, curious girls at your desk. That time she said your name was cool, and you wanted to live up to it - the resolution broken in ten minutes when the math question made you cry. How pathetic you were, and then...

"We really did?" says Madoka, blushing pink with vicarious pride in a past her. "I - I'm glad..."

"Ah, but you're praising us too much," says Mami self-deprecatingly, "and praising yourself too little, Homura-san."

"I'm not," you insist. "I was pathetic, it's the truth, but you... Mami-san was our cool and kind senpai, and -"

"Too much, too much!" says Mami, laughing, "Madoka-san was the one who truly saved you, I'm sure."

"I don't know," you say, "it doesn't matter who killed the Witch, but that it was Mami-san and Madoka-san who saved me. We really felt that we could be like you one day, and... Madoka-san was the first friend I ever really had. So I was the normal girl, but all my friends were magical girls, and heroes, and I was never happier." You stop, and pause. "And then Walpurgisnacht arrived."

"Walpurgisnacht?" says Madoka, pronouncing the unfamiliar term slowly. "What's that?"

"A giant Witch," says Mami, "and very powerful. Most Witches have to hide themselves in barriers and labyrinths, and Puellae Magi must hunt them down. But a Walpurgisnacht is so strong and so dangerous that they can roam without barriers."

"It came," you say, acutely aware of the paleness in your face. You wrap your fingers around the teacup to not tremble, lock your knees under you to not shake, and grit your teeth so your voice doesn't tremble. Remain calm, remain calm, you've told this story before. "It... it killed Mami," you all but whisper, hardly able to look at Mami because your eyes are glued to the tea-cup. "And I," but you cannot bear to tell Madoka the true extent of your pathetic self. The you who would have abandoned Mami, abandoned Mitakihara, abandoned everything for your safety and Madoka's, not even in a whisper. "I... Madoka-san told me that she was happy. Happy she had made her Wish, because it let her save me."

"I -," says Madoka-san, but she's pale too. "Mami-san -"

Mami nods. She's heard this story before, after all. [1]

"And then she went into battle," beautifully, gracefully, powerfully, vainly, "and... and," and if you couldn't speak Mami's death except in a whisper, your voice completely falters when you come to Madoka's, and you find that your self-control does not yet extend to your tears, which spill hotly down your cheeks. "And s-so I m-made my Wish," you choke. "To g-go back, f-for the power to p-protect you the way y-you p-protected - meeeeee-"

Mami collects you in her arms, your tears soaking into her shirt. "Homura-san," she says. "It's okay. It's okay. We're here, it's okay."

"W-we'll be fine this time," says Madoka, "with Homura-san we'll be fine, won't we?"

"We will," says Mami, patting your back, her voice firm in contrast to the gentleness of her hand. "We'll be fine, we have Homura-san with us."

You subside into Mami. She keeps saying that. If she believes it… it has to be true, doesn't it? She believes in you? Even after ROBERTA?

Poor Homu... she just doesn't have anything for self-esteem at this point, does she?

(And it seems that HEAL doesn't reattach limbs at this level, so I guess that's another 'once you've leveled up' thing.)

Well, Madoka and Mami were a lot more aggressively supportive than I'd thought they would be. Thank you for breaking the update off where you did, @pantherasapiens. Continuing on past that would've had Homura being way more sad than she ought to be after that sort of response from them.

[X] Thank them both for believing in you. Apologize for your outburst of crying, and try to compose yourself. Use your [RING OF CLEANING] to make yourself not be gross.
-[X] Homura's going to be "tearfully happy" here, for a few minutes. The pain of her memories aren't gone, but there's hope for the future.
[X] Promise them that you'll do everything you can to help, and if you're no good in a fight, then you'll just have to make up for it by helping them in other ways! Like... homework! They probably have homework they haven't done! Summon study guides for their homework assignments, and offer to summon cheat-sheets for them. You can even protect them from bad dreams, after a day like today -- summon a "potion to ensure peaceful sleep" for each of them, [IDENTIFY] the potions, and explain to them how they would be used.
[X] Let Madoka and Mami decide what they're going to do. Enjoy being around your friends.
[X] When Madoka needs to leave, offer to walk her home. Promise Mami that you'll get her the potions tomorrow afternoon, and you'll try to find a way to make them taste better.
[X] If Madoka allows you to walk her home, share with her memories of the happier times you had together. Once you've brought her back home, give her a hug. Mami is a friend and mentor, but Madoka means the world to you. If she can forgive you for your failures, then you can keep going.
[X] After all is said and done, head home. Stay in [PUELLA FORM] to make sure your legs don't hurt. Summon a "potion to ensure peaceful sleep" for yourself, set an alarm on your [SMARTPHONE OF TELEPATHY] for 8:00 AM, take the potion, and go to sleep.

(And it seems that HEAL doesn't reattach limbs at this level, so I guess that's another 'once you've leveled up' thing.)
She went directly from Walpurgisnacht to repeated failures. She never had Canon!Homura's time going through school and succeeding at all the things she'd failed at. She never had that moment after her first witch fight, with an ecstatic Madoka hugging her in congratulations. In terms of time experienced, PLHM!Homura still hasn't reached the amount of time Canon!Homura had spent as a magical girl in the second Walpurgisnacht fight.

She's been humiliated repeatedly by her magic not automatically giving her the abilities every other magical girl has, by flailing about with her summons in a fight and it nearly getting her and Madoka killed, by shooting herself in the head, being lichbombed and seeing it break Mami and then being burned to death, trying to gain more skills only for them to be useless and cause another girl to make a contract just to search her out, running away from a potential witch fight because she's too incapable to do her duty as a magical girl, alienating Mami by brokenly ranting at a primary school kid, getting Madoka killed by Sayaka because of a witch, nearly killing herself with potions of caffeine and having to call on Kyubey to help her with the neighbors, being a complete spazz when fighting witches with Mami, nearly killing Sayaka because her magic items are stupid, alienating Mami by trying to protect her from being lichbombed, and then costing Madoka her leg and hand because she finally thought she figured out how to not be a terrible magical girl...

All of that in the span of about two weeks experience-time.

Someone with good self-confidence would be horribly shaken by all of that, and Homura had no self-confidence to begin with.

If you ever wonder why people complain about the difficulty of the quest, realize that Urobutcher was kinder to Homura than pantherasapiens has been.

...Yes?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

I was commiserating with Homura, not suggesting that her lack of self-esteem was in any way surprising or unwarranted.
