The lives of ninja are much akin to a candle's flame. Fickle. Fleeting. Easily extinguished. This is all too clear to you now, as the Great Ninja World War rages around you.

You are one of the aforementioned wicks, burning away in service to your village. Your only commandment? Survive.
Character Creation
When news trickled from the Land of Trees about a "Hidden Village" being founded, a supposed gathering of disparate clans, elders in every clan around the country scoffed and dismissed it as a fool's idea. It'd never work, they said. No two clans could ever trust each other, they said. Then they cursed the names of every one of their neighbors.

When news trickled from the Land of Trees that it was the famed Senju and Uchiha clans that had joined hands to try this new paradigm, alongside several other regional clans, elders in every clan around the country laughed and dismissed it as an utter farce. The Senju and the Uchiha would never work together, they said. One of the two was clearly trying to spread disinformation about a recent loss, they said. Then they cursed the names of every one of their neighbors.

When refugees came from the Land of Blaze, we slaughtered them. The survivors we interrogated told us they were fleeing from a group wearing strange plates of metal on their head, engraved with a leaf. What strange lies the invaders told themselves to rationalise being forced from their homes, the elders said. How amusing, they chuckled. But some began writing letters in the dead of night.

More refugees came. From the Land of Forests. From the Land of Volcanoes. From the Land of Steam. We slaughtered them all. Their survivors told us that people from the "Hidden Leaf Village" had elevated Tree's daimyo to lordship over the new Land of Fire. Nobody was laughing now.

The next few months were a frenzy of activity. The clans banded together. Grudges, ancient and new, were forgotten, or thoroughly settled as more stories of "Leaf" conquests started coming sooner and sooner. Worse yet, we started hearing from neighboring countries that their own clans started banding together too.

A rushed constitution was quickly signed. Twenty one hands for twenty one clans clasped in necessity. We thought we were safe. We thought we'd achieved safety. Then our worst nightmare came knocking at our door.

The day he came to our village would forever be marked as our founding day. He walked through our front door and introduced himself with a foreign word. Hokage. Our jonin were still arguing about the chain of command even as every kunai and shuriken were being pointed at his back. Then, he cast a single jutsu, and silenced us all.

That was the day love entered our village's heart.

That was the day fear entered our village's soul.

Twenty one years have passed since that day. Twenty one years copying everything we could from Leaf. Twenty one years building our strength. Our first true generation of sons and daughters have stepped out to face a brave new world, ready to defend their village from the encroachment of Rock, Leaf, and Cloud. Now their strength will be tested like never before.

Senju Hashirama is dead! Leaf's enemies prowl at their doorstep, and we will not be caught unready! Fight, loyal sons and daughters of Waterfall! Bear our might against the enemies, and show the world the strength which made Senju Hashirama falter. Our village is relying on you.

What is your background?

[X] Clan Child

Trueborn, or the child of civilians in the clan. Regardless, your family has claimed you, and will walk by your side for the rest of your life.

[X] Adopted

Once clanless, now raised to a higher station. Perhaps you were a bastard, now legitimised, or you demonstrated enough noteworthy skills to gather a clan's attention. You lead a new life now. But you'll never forget your roots.

[X] Clanless

The offspring of two clanless ninja, or perhaps born of civilians who were born of couplings with ninja themselves. Almost no one will support you, and those who do will have demands of their own. At the very least, your decisions will be your own.

Which clan do you hail allegiance to?
[X] Sakamoto

Wielders of the feared Phantom release, you never know if they're right behind you.

Primary Element: Phantom

[X] Mitsurugi

The Mitsurugi kenjutsu style is brutish, ugly, and inelegant. But that's no balm for those impaled on the ends of their swords.

Primary Element: Water

[X] Yakedo

Unfortunate ninja who run afoul of the Yakedo clan are often horrifically burned, and suffer chronic pain for the rest of their life; however such ninja are rare, as not many walk away from the Geyser release.

Primary Element: Geyser

[X] Kusasei

There is no more demoralising sight than witnessing a member of the Kusasei clan burn through a hastily erected wall, for the Corruption release trumps all defenses.

Primary Element: Corruption

[X] Yumetabe

The Yumetabe clan might rival even the Uchiha clan in shurikenjutsu, but they might also rival the Nara clan in their sloth!

Primary Element: Lightning

[X] Kenkeru

The Kenkeru clan is a taijutsu-focused ninja's worst nightmare, for how does one punch armor made of molten stone?

Primary Element: Earth/Fire

[X] Kemeku

The Kemeku clan's pink eyes are a perfect defense against intrusion, because even if an intruder is invisible, they still forget they still produce body heat.

Primary Element: Fire

[X] Raiun

The Raiun clan are excellent at piercing through defenses, because their enemies might be able to raise a stone wall against a flood, but they never expect the lightning bolt following close behind.

Primary Element: Water/Lightning

[X] Dokukama

When fighting a member of the Dokukama clan one must take care to never take a wound, because even if you can defend against their attacks, how do you defend against the poison in your blood?
Primary Element: Mixed

[X] Awaikawa

These strange blondes might be mysterious and employ traps a little too much, but one false step will blow you to see the Sage!

Primary Element: Lightning

[X] Fuiuchi

Taijutsu users must be wary when facing a member of the Fuiuchi clan, for when one punch lands, they never see the second one coming.

Primary Element: Mixed

[X] Shubiteki

A million cuts. The center of an explosion. A final ninjutsu. A Shubiteki will stand through them all.

Primary Element: Mixed

[X] Gyakuryu

The only surefire method of killing a Gyakuryu is with the first hit, because once they see you, you'll never catch them again.

Primary Element: Water

[X] Kumozaru

Above? Below? To the side? How do you defend against infiltration when the Kumozaru can scale any defense you build?

Primary Element: Earth

[X] Yoruhashi

Not even the night will impede a Yoruhashi's vigilance, for their eyes see clearly through the shadows.

Primary Element: Fire

[X] Mizen

Chakra homing kunai? Instant ready food? Fucking explosives? A Mizen carries all, and more than you can imagine.

Primary Element: Earth

[X] Hanashi

The cute girl that gave you a flower? The passing oxcart laden with poppies? When exactly had you inhaled the Hanashi's deadly poison?

Primary Element: Mixed

[X] Kobe

Spears? Javelins? Pilum? It doesn't matter what the Kobe slings when it'll cut through you and root you to the ground all the same.

Primary Element: Fire/Earth

[X] Fuki

When you see a clan specialized around training others you might think them weak, but will you think the same when you face their cadre of jonin?

Primary Element: Mixed

[X] Kanetsuki

Give a smart man the service of one ninja and he'll conquer a village. Give a smart man ten, and he'll conquer a city. The Kanetsuki? They lead a village.

Primary Element: Earth/Wind

What is your name?
Note: If a clan child background is selected then only the given name will be accepted.

[x] Write in

What is your gender?
[x] Write in

What is your element?
Note: If the Yakedo, Sakamoto, or Kusasei clans are selected, then this will be defaulted to their specific elemental releases. The elements which are listed after the other clans are the most common elements within those clans, not hard rules on what's their natures are.

Welcome to Eight Seconds to Impact, a quest set in a reimagination of Naruto as a deathworld. Those words are directly from Marked for Death's summary. Go read that.

This quest diverges from Naruto canon, and is set in a fictional history of another already fictional quest. To explain that a little better, this quest is akin to a quest set in HPMOR setting during the first Global Wizarding War, the conflict between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. HPMOR diverges already from standard Harry Potter canon, and this would be set deeper within the fanfiction.

Many of the worldbuilding elements may seem weird in comparison to standard Naruto features, or even to those familiar with Marked for Death. This is because this quest occurs roughly fifty years before both established canons, and many villages still operate as though it is still the Warring States period. Jutsu are weaker, and more expensive. Some clans are yet to be born, meanwhile some are already on their last legs. Some institutions may not have flourished yet, or have yet to have been invented at all. Some countries may not even exist yet, and instead are ripe for conquest as local ninja clans scramble to catch up.

This quest will be hosted on two separate websites. Here, on SufficientVelocity, this thread will be used for cleaned up updates, questions for the QM, infoposts, and general discussion/planning between the players. On fiction.live, the quest will be written live for the reader's enjoyment (and tomato throwing). The reader may vote for and write in certain dialogue options, and even roll the dice for the 4 Fudge Dice on this website. Keep in mind, fiction.live spun off of 4chan's /tg/ board. The readerbase has all the trappings of its predecessor. Do the math.

This quest as a whole is meant to diverge from the standard quest formula, but quite frankly we'll see how things go.

Another aspect of quests this quest is meant to experiment with is the relationship between QM and the players. This isn't to say that the relationship will be hostile, no, however I will definitely not be as helpful as others. Should the player's character die, you will have the option to continue in control of a teammate, or return to character creation, the latter of which will trigger information being erased. Husband your resources wisely. Every scrap of information you pry from me should be guarded. Keep in mind, I'm always watching.

Okay. Our mission statement is to survive, and these guys have a fricken dual element armor technique as their calling card. All according to Kenkeru!

For OP setting breaking stuff: if we get a bunch of super strong cloth we can make a hot air balloon flight technique with their armor.

[X] Clan Child

Primary Element: Earth/Fire

Guys we are in turbulent times we aren't Sasuke or Naruto so having support from a Clan is essential if you are worried about them controlling our choices don't because in Ninja World you aren't free infact being just a civilian would make others try to take advantage of the MC.

After we grow strong we can take over the clan if we want. Do think this through.

[X] Fuki

Potentially the fastest route to power. The leadership of these freshly-born "villages" is going to be looking for systemic, consistently working, scalable, industrial solutions to the problem of military power. The Fuki fill that role, which would allow them to quickly maneuver to political importance. And political importance could be leveraged into personal power, by way of driving hard bargains in exchange for jutsu/secrets/favours.

In addition, being embedded in this sort of "ideas-focused" clan would allow our player character, personally, to rise in prominence quickly under the guidance of us-the-players. We'd be able to climb upwards much faster than if our importance solely relied on our slowly-growing XP totals.

Given that the first World War is raging right now I think it makes more sense to plan for immediate combat power than a clan focused on teaching.

Long term I think you're right that this would leave us in a better position, but not if we die immediately.

More efficient instructors get sent to the backlines to fasttrack cannon fodder to the front lines.

I think the Fuki option would send us to the Frontlines after all how are you supposed to teach someone something when you haven't done it yourself the Elders or veterans would take up teaching whereas the younglings or Genins would be sent to the Frontlines to various missions so they can teach others the skills they learnt.

There is no such a thing as civilian council or whatever those shit are Fanon.
Sorry, the conversation is going to make no sense without context.

I have been referring to another quest in which civilians, while not being part of a council, were involved in administrative/grunt work during their WW4 equivalent. Due to Konoha having suffered multiple administrative-related losses, the new civilian hires had minimal training in doing their jobs, resulting in problems including assigning missions and the like. In this case, the hypothesis goes that whatever administrator got Ebisu killed read the mission (requirements: Special Jonin or above), read Ebisu's title (Special Jonin), and thought that was enough without considering that Ebisu was a Special Jonin in teaching.
