Dangan Ronpa: Beautiful Dread (AU)

Alright, omake time! Sadly, kinda limited due to not yet knowing that much about Kozue, not knowing how breakfast vote will end up like and being this early in the game, but given a certain someone, can totally see it happen.

--------------------------------------------------

Edit: You know what? No. I feel this lack a bit. This is too minimal because I had somewhere to go... I KNOW I can add more to it, so I'm editing it out before DablueSky see it and will put it back once done.

Non-Canon Omake by Megaolix
Breakfast had been a mostly quiet affair so far. But that was only to be expected. It still hadn't been a full day since they found themselves here and their new reality hadn't completely settled in yet.

More came to the hall to eat. Some expressed doubts about the food being made (with Byakuya at the front), but it was hard to deny that it would have been incredibly stupid to slip something strange in full view of everyone.

Time passed and yet, one person she hoped to see still hasn't appeared as others started to leave. Resigned, Kozue decided she was done here and set out to explore more of the schools, but that was when Kyoko finally arrived.

"Ah…"

"Oh…"

Part of Kozue's head knew Kyoko would come for food sooner or later. She possibly waited until there were less people around, but hunger finally got to her and here she was.
Still, now that she appeared just as she gave up, Kozue was struggling a bit to find what to tell her. What exactly caused that air yesterday? Or rather, was it the time to address that? Kyoko also appeared to be at a loss for words and unsure of how to greet her sister.

The atmosphere was starting to get strange and some started to notice there was an issue between the sisters. Kozue knew she shouldn't let that issue be known to others and yet...

Her train of thought was interrupted when someone slammed into her.

Unknown to the two of them, Naegi had been walking up to them in concern. And unknown to him, Asahina was also getting up. However, in a bit of clumsiness, she accidentally knocked her plate, sending a banana peel (eaten after being convinced by multiple persons that she couldn't just eat donuts for a balanced breakfast) on the floor. And like a running gag, Naegi did not notice until he walked right on it. The result had been him knocking over both Kyoko and Kozue in an attempt to talk to them and what was wrong.

They all ended in a pile, somehow, and it took a few moments for Kozue to get her bearing and realize how they landed. Namely, with Kyko in the bottom, Naegi in the middle and her on top. And while his hands were not touching anywhere inappropriate, it did not change the fact that he was pressed between two girls and could feel certain parts.

From where she was, Kozue could see how Kyoko reached the same conclusion as her face slightly colored, throwing an accusatory glance at the boy between them whose face Kozue could not see. And if she had to admit, she felt some heat creeping up her cheeks. Certainly she wanted to get closer once more, as they must have been as sisters, but perhaps not in this manner.

The odd silence that filled the room was probably was caused them to not get up right away.

"...Really?" Kyoko commented, finally breaking the silence, and recognizing the absurdity of the situation.

"I see, so this is the power of luck…" Kozue added. To think he would use his ability in such ways…

"Wha-?! No, wait, it was an accident!" Naegi said, quickly coming back from his stupor. "I swear I didn't want this to happen!"

"So you say." Kozue answered back, pushing herself back up and allowing Naegi to jump back up to his feet. "And yet, is it not a man's dream to find himself in that kind of position?"

"M-Makoto…" Sayaka, watching on the side, muttered.

"N-n-no!" Naegi shouted as the girl was giving him a strange look. The kind of look that seemed to silently condemned someone when learning a new thign about them they were not happy with. "It's the full truth, honest!"

...Kozue had to admit, his panic was somewhat amusing to watch. Perhaps it would be worth messing with him a bit in the future.

While he became the current center of attention, Kozue offered a hand to pull Kyoko back up, which she took. Only once she was back on her feet, however, did the two of them stop as they remembered the odd air they had just before this incident as they looked at one another.

Before they could say anything however, another crashing sound had them turn their head back. It appeared Naegi, in his panic to defend himself, had slipped on the same banana peel once more. Rather than crashing into someone however, the table was the one to greet his fall.

"M-Makoto! Are you alright?" Sayaka said, running to his side as Naegi held his head, apparently in great pain.

Asahina, on the other hand, stared at the offending banana peel that was the source of the current chaos. Before Naegi could somehow manage to miss it a third time, she picked it up up and threw it in the trash. Sakura, meanwhile, joined Maizono to ensure Naegi was alright.

"...Fascinating." Kyoko let out, as she observed all this. "One could say it was only bad luck and yet…"

"No one is thinking any longer he may be a pervert, even at the cost of pain for himself. And I cannot even say he desired any of this." Kozue concluded. "Truly, the power of his luck is a sight to behold."

The two sisters agreed with each other of their conclusion, before theirs eyes widened a bit in realization, the only sign of being startled. Somehow, in this chaos, the tension that had been present between the two of them was gone as they acted in a way that felt familiar between each other.

...Was this also part of Naegi's luck?

Kozue turned to see once more the boy, being looked over by three different girls. It seemed a trip to the infirmary was being agreed upon, even if Naegi himself tried to say he was fine and did not truly need this.

"...Well, I suppose we should get going as well." Kozue said.

"Ah, yes, we should." Kyoko answered back.

They certainly still had a conversation to hold, but it was alright. For now, Kozue was silently glad that despite the mess an unrelated party made, the two of them were comfortable once more with each other.

--------------------------------------------------

There we go, V2. More words added and on top of the joke, used Naegi as a possible icebreaker to the current tension. Hope you guys like it.

The power/"luck" of a protagonist... Truly a marvelous thing:p

The omake isn't canon. It's the sudden tonal shift that blocks it from being so. Still, rewards.

@Megaolix
Rewards! Choose one.

[] Double Tap: A skill for use in Class Trials. A roll done in the background will determine whether or not a lie can be seen through. If so, the character dialogue will have an addendum *.
[] An Opening!: Social increases with Kyoko and Naegi.

For just 2 Monokoins, I'll be looking at first or second instead... Mmm, gonna need time to think.

Edit:

[X] An Opening!: Social increases with Kyoko and Naegi.

Probably for the best long term. And I am confident in my ability to spot lies if we have the info to call it out.

1.8 Soon, It Will Be Cold Enough To Light Fires
A feeling of disappointment welled up in her chest as Kozue poked at the pair of toast and grits that apparently Sakura herself had made. The grits had no taste, but were incredibly filling and nutritious, according to her. Kozue couldn't help but make a small face as she swallowed the "food". It was no different than sticking soggy paper into her mouth. She wasn't even sure sugar would do anything to make the meal better. Yet, Kozue's stomach rumbled and she sighed. She was hungry, but she couldn't eat this. Even Maizono was despondantly stirring up her own portion with a spoon, staring out of a window wistfully.

Only Asahina gobbled up the food without a care in the world, almost inhaling her food instantaenously the second it came into contact with her lips. I guess you can't really taste the blandness if you don't keep it on your tongue long enough for the flavor to kick in, Kozue thought drily. Maybe Asahina was a lot smarter than she seemed. Best to keep an eye on that one then. Shaking her head, Kozue glanced at Sakura. She'd already finished her meal, and was watching Asahina enthusiastically devouring her food. Kozue's eyes returned to her serving. It would generally be seen as rude to not even touch the meal that someone else made, and it would do Kozue no favors to earn someone's resentment, petty as it might be.

Bringing a spoonful of grits up to her mouth, Kozue couldn't help but study the consistency of the porridge. It looked oddly solid and liquid-y, almost slimy, at the same time. Is this what witches brew in their cauldrons whenever they got hungry? What kind of magical substance was this... If it started moving on its own, Kozue wouldn't be surprised at all, only bemused. The toast, on the other hand, looked drier than the Sahara Desert. One could almost feel the tip of one's tongue dry up merely looking at the toasted bread.

Stomach churning, Kozue set her spoon down. She couldn't do it. There had to be something else in the kitchen area of the dining hall. With her nose crinkled, Kozue placed her elbow on the table and planted her chin on her palm. Maybe she could make up some excuse that---

Kozue's thought process froze as her eyes met Sakura's. How long has she been watching me? Slowly, both of their gazes drifted down to Kozue's and Maizono's untouched bowls. The lines around Sakura's mouth tightened as she crossed her arms and shook her head. Great, now she thinks we're churlish. With a sigh, Kozue opened her mouth to speak, but Sakura started first.

"Hmm, forgive me, Maizono and Kozue." Sakura's voice was deep, and it rumbled with each syllable, "I did not take into consideration your tastes, only mine and Asahina's."

Asahina stopped eating and asked with a full mouth, "Wry are u apologirizng for, Sagura? Is good shtuff!"

"This plain protein enhanced meal is only good for you and I, Asahina. We must always be considerate of others. Failing to understand even your comrades will lead to a definite failure in understanding your opponent."

"O-oh..." Asahina swallowed.

"W-well, it's the thought that counts." Maizono flushed red, "I didn't mean to seem ungrateful, Sakura."

"Same." Kozue quickly followed, relieved, "I'm more of a traditionlist when it comes to breakfast."

Getting up from her seat, Sakura gently took the bowls of gruel and walked towards the kitchen. She was a lot more perceptive than she looked. At least Monokuma couldn't accuse this one of perpetuating a stereotype. Though one had to wonder...Did Sakura even know how to create a relatively "normal" breafast? Those muscles didn't come from overindulgence and it was clear from the meal itself that she only required the bare minimum to keep herself satisfied.

"Maybe I should apologize." Maizono was troubled, watching as Sakura's back disappeared past the doorway, "She didn't have to make that meal for all of us. She was being thoughtful."

"I don't think--" Kozue started.

Suddenlly, Maizono's eyes flashed angrily, "Were you about to say that you don't think the meal didn't take much effort at all? I'm a little disappointed in you, Kozue."

Rearing back, Kozue's eyes were wide open in shock. She didn't think that she that easily read but she quickly recovered, "No, of course not. I was going to say I don't think she knows how to make much else. Maybe we should ask her if she needs help. I didn't realize you thought so little of me, Maizono."

How did she...?

At Kozue's berating tone, Maizono lowered her eyes, "S-sorry. What an awful way to start the day. Y-you're right, maybe we can help her out. Are you coming, Asahina, or will you stay and eat?"

"Eat what?" Asahina leaped up for her chair, her bowl indeed empty, "I'm all for making more food. More protein is always a good thing."

The trio followed Sakura's path into the kitchen. Almost immediately, Kozue was stunned by sheer amount of food displayed. Mountains of fresh vegetables gleamed inside metal tubs, little nozzles attached to ceiling spraying mist over carrots and brocolli and much more at regular intervals. Metal doors with little glass windows revealed huge slabs of meat sitting comfortably packaged into neat rows...and there was still another dozen steel doors.
One person could sit here alone and feast for a whole year and still have enough left for several more.

"Wow, Monokuma sure knows what he's doing." Maizono, despite her dark expression, seemed impressed.

"Nah, it totally has to be the school, right? No way some lunatic can drum up all this grub themselves, right?" Asahina looked a little mad, her cheeks
puffed out in defiance.

Kozue, once again, hid her surprise, "You know, that's a valid question to ask."

"Hm?"

"What do you mean?

"I mean, it's a question of Monokuma's influence. If this is actually Hope's Peak, he didn't have to do much about the food situation, but he still managed to seal up an extremely famous school in the middle of a large city without anyone noticing." Now it was Kozue's turn to looked troubled, "If it isn't, he still managed to kidnap this huge group, keep us locked inside this building, provide all this food, state of the art security system, etc. The point is, both answers lead to some disturbing ramifications."

Silence followed after Kozue's long speech. Maizono and Asahina looked at each other, "I didn't think of that."

"Me neither..."

Ah, right.

"No point in worrying about it right now though." Kozue said hurriedly, "In fact, I'm more curious about where Sakura disappeared to."
Indeed, Sakura was nowhere to be seen. Her hulking form should've been easy to spot, yet the room was strangely empty. Besides the usual electronic buzzing of Monokuma's camera and the sprays of mist drifting down from the nozzles, the kitchen was quiet. With meaningful glances, the trio spread out across the room, caution in every step. Maizono looked up at a set of knives hanging from the wall. One of the set of five was missing. Following her gaze, an alarmed Asahina wheeled about, searching frantically.

"S-Sakura! Where did you go? If you're in here, answer me." Asahina called out, uninhibited fear in her voice. The feeling was infectious. Maizono looked scared, looking around repeatedly. Kozue could feel her heartbeat speedup too as she tried to keep her emotions under control. There was no way someone actually listened to what Monokuma said, right? It was far too early for something that drastic to happen.

As the trio's search quickened, Kozue noticed one of the freezer doors was slightly ajar. Small puffs of mist emitted from the door as the warm and cold collided near the crack. She felt drawn towards the door. Maizono's and Asahina's calls slowly faded into buzzing nothingness, lost in the abyss of Kozue's anticipation. Only one person knew what they would find in the freezer. He was probably cackling to himself behind his camera monitors.

Careful as a surgeon about to do open heart surgery, Kozue's fingers closed around the cold handle of the door, slowly pulling the door open. Inside, a familiar person with a huge body frame was hidden behind a cloud of mist that formed rapidly. But something was wrong. Sakura was hunched down near the floor. Splatters of crimson was dashed against the floor, alongside a bloodsmeared knife. The dark red had seeped into her torn white uniform shirt, stained just as deeply as Kozue's soul.

Only Asahina could react, screaming out, "OH MY GOSH, SAKURA!!"

***

Meanwhile, at the same time.

The brass doorknob rattled but held firm. Kyoko clicked her tongue in disgust. For someone who claimed they could explore however they liked, Monokuma sure kept a lot of places off limits. Kyoko was in the A/V room, with a score of school computers all around her. Each of the desktops was state-of-the-art, boasting some of the beset software civilian money could buy. A projector screen as at the fore of the classroom, presumably so
students could see what the teacher was doing on there computer.

None of that interested Kyoko in the slightest. She had gotten up earlier, she assumed, than anyone else. It had been 0500 when she had checked her e-Notebook. Unless someone stayed up all night, nobody should be awake. Nor, Kyoko slowly and regretfully passed her room, should Kozue. Before dipping off into the school, she had balled up her fist to tap on her sisters door...yet she couldn't bring herself to. Her behavior the night before had been unacceptable. She needed some time for herself, anyway, time to think about--

Kyoko shook her head to break out of her reverie. No time for that at the moment, no time to get distracted by anything. Because if there's one thing she could be sure of, it would be the fact that someone was likely to show up if something in the rules seemed unclear or unintentionally cloudy. Just as Kyoko withdrew her hand from the knob, she heared a painful voice she had immediately familiarized herself with in the gym the day before.

"Whatcha doing, Kirigiri Mk. 1?" Kyoko turned around to face Monokuma, who had a paw up to his mouth, head cocked to the side in curiosity, "There ain't nothin' in this room that's important yet, y'know?"

"...Not true. Sakura spoke to me about this room, though I'm sure you already know that." Kyoko carefully measured her response.

"Ohohohoho. She was right, y'know. If those three had gone in there, it would've been trespassing. That's some serious transgression. I would've had to get bear-y angry!"

"The rules say that we can explore however we please. Why should anyone have to pay for something you apparently overlooked? Mastermind's tend to be a little cautious about security lapses." Kyoko crossed her arms and stared at Monokuma without flinching.

"Y-you're scaring me with them cold gazes, Kirigiri. If a look can kill, I'd be grilled into beef jerky." Monokuma cowered, holding his paws up in surrender,
"But you're right. You guys can explore, I'll give you that. But what if a door were locked, like that one there?"

"...What if a door were locked?" Kyoko was sure that was some kind of trap.

"Then ya can't get in. That's why it's locked. Which is why you guys can longer try and break into locked rooms. I'll let ya jiggle the doorknob a bit, but do anything more than that, and the Executions get started a little early. New rule, starting now." Suddenly, a razor sharp steel claw emerged from Monokuoma's paw. It gleamed maliciously, before it slid back into his paw.

"Arbitrary as expected." Kyoko fully expected that, just not so early.

"You sayin' I'm predictable?! Well, I'll tell you what's NOT predictable. Somethin's going on in the kitchen. One of your classmates had an accident. It's funny, really."

A shocked expression appeared on Kyoko's face, before she forced it behind her placid mask, "What are you talking about?"

"Nothin'. I'm just sayin', your sister's there too. What if Mk.1 was the only one left in a series of two? You'd have to go on a three year journey to get your honor back. And revenge." Monokuma snorted and turned away, "But I'm bored now. You do your thing."

An unfamiliar feeling of dread settled into Kyoko's stomach. But just as Monokuma was about to disappear, Kyoko called out to him, "Wait, what are you trying to pull here?"

"What am I trying to pull? I told ya, something's goin' on in the kitchen." Monokuma peeked out from behind a school computer.

"You specifically mentioned my sister. You're trying to get me to rush to the kitchen. Why?"

"...Man, you Kirigiri's are cold as ice. Colder than the top of Mt. Everest, the tallest building in the world. Instead of going back to your sister's aid, you're here stalling for questions. Fine, I'll tell you."

"You will?" Kyoko was suprised.

"Yep, but ya gotta convince me. Do your best, I'm a hard audience to deal with." Monokuma cackled.

Convince him?
[] Give up, Monokuma is the greatest.
[] Don't give up, but you don't have a convincing arguement, and Monokuma is still the greatest.
[] Monokuma is so hip and fly.
[] Write in.

"Sakura, how could this have happened!" Maizono covered her mouth, looking on the bloody scene in shock.

Asahina had rushed forward, immediately jumping to the aid of her friend. As she did so, Kozue breathed a sigh of relief. It was as if someone had cut a cord of tension inside her heart. Monokuma probably was laughing. Had this gone according to his plan? No, it was far too random for that to have happened. He would've needed minute calculations to pull something this devious off. Maybe now, she could--

"I am fine, Asahina." Sakura had an entire pig drooped over her right shoulder in a fireman carry. A second pig was under her left arm, "I simply lost my balance in all this blood."

"You really could have hurt yourself!" Maizono admonished Sakura, picking up the knife that was on the floor. Apparently, Sakura had used it to cut down the two pigs from the hooks on the walls.

"I agree. Why didn't you ask us for help?" Kozue, feeling a little foolish, asked.

"Because I was trying to make up for that breakfast I provided to you. It's something I thought I should do on my own." Sakura's voice was quiet.

"That's nice and all, but what made you think the four of us could eat about thirty lbs of pork?" Kozue didn't quite follow the logic on that. Although, it was possible that Sakura could devour one all her own, so there was that possibility to consider.

"As I was about to leave with the first one, I thought to myself, it would be nice if the entire class could sit and enjoy a meal together."

"Ah, drum up some goodwill between all of us?" Kozue cocked her head to the side, "It's not a bad idea, if a bit ambitious. Not only would you have had to cook for all of us, you'd have to figure out how to invite everyone. But I think all of us would only require one pig, still."

"Indeed, I was hoping Maizono and Asahina could help on that account. You and I could prepare the meal."

"Oh, you want us to find everyone and invite them? That'd be so cool, wouldn't it, Maizono?!"

"Y-yeah, it'd be great if we could all get together. Just leave it to us."

The two quickly exited, chattering on their way out, leaving Sakura and Kozue together alone. Sakura easily carried the pig without breaking a sweat. This was the strongest student in term of physical ability, no question. Immediately, Kozue was reminded of the story Mondo said about Sakura leaving a dent in one of the steel walls. How ridiculous. Kozue thought about offering aid, but she wasn't sure she'd be able to do anything with a dead pig. Not to mention, all that blood that was still running into Sakura's clothes.

"What makes you think I can cook?" Kozue held the steel door open for Sakura, who nodded appreciatively.

"No reason. Just my intutition speaking."

"Well, I think I can. Not that I have to try very hard, anyway. Making enough food in a decent amount of time would, well, limit our options. I suppose we can just make pork miso soup out of all of this."

Sakura slammed the pig down onto a counter and cutting board. Reaching up, she grabbed a huge meat cleaver. In her hands, it looked like a pocket knife. Without missing a beat, she slammed the blade down on the pig with a meaty squish. Faster and faster until her hands and blade became nothing but a silver blur. Kozue was mesmerized. Within a minute, the pig was reduced to bite sized chunks.

With Kozue's help, the two were well on their way. Sakura didn't know a thing about the spices needed, and how much, but she was handy with the chopping, which was something Kozue appreciated. Soon enough, the pork and vegetables were lightly boiling, and giving off a sensational aroma. Yeah, that smells about right. Small beads of sweat broke out on Kozue's brow from the steaming vat.

As the pair took a quick break, Kozue heard an imperceptible chatter from the dining area. Jerking her head towards the door, Kozue peeked out of the doorway, followed by Sakkura. The tables were full of familiar faces. Junko Enoshima was doing her nails. She grinned widely and threw Kozue a wave before returning to her paintwork. Mondo Owada had his feet on the table, leaning back into his chair. Ishimaru was lecturing him, standing up straight in his white uniform. Almost everyone was there.

Almost.

Toko,Byakuya, and Kyoko were noticeably (or not) missing.

Still, the two must've been in the back longer than they thought. The time read 0900. Byakuya missing was understandable. Toko, not so much. Kyoko, most definitely not. A small frown appeared on Kozue's face. Was Kyoko still mad about last night? Not that Kozue could actually say what had really made her mad. Maybe she ought to go looking for her. Or maybe not. Kyoko would come when she was ready.

"Kozue, can you help me serve these into bowls?"

"Sure, no problem." Falling back into the kitchen, Sakura found some ceramic tableware. Carefully, they poured steaming miso soup, splashing into each bowl. Now, Kozue could enjoy the fruits of her labor. Sakura went out to announce the food and the other streamed in shortly thereafter.

"Hey, this smells pretty good! Didn't know you could cook, Kozue." Junko was the first one through the door, blowing on her nails.

"I wasn't so sure myself, though Sakura did much of the heavy lifting, figuratively and literally." Kozue gave Junko a half smile.

"I don't doubt it. If ya got the bod, no point in not showing it off!" Junko was a model, so her words applied in some sense to Sakura. Though Kozue couldn't tell if Junko thought Sakura was a boy or not.

"True enough. Enjoy."

"Thanks, I will." Junko whisked off with her bowl.

"This was a fantastic idea, Classmate!" Suddenly, Ishimaru clamored in, "Sowing trust between classmates is always a welcome exercise in this school environment. I wish I had thought of it myself!"

He was loud, his presence forcefully overwhelming even Sakura's. It even surprised Kozue for a moment. Every word was spoken with conviction, as though he had elected to spend as much energy as he could with every step. His hair was neatly trimmed, and his clothes were pressed firmly, with nary a wrinkle to be seen. His boots could probably be seen from space, given the time that it took to get that sort of sheen.

"It would've been nice to have more help, I suppose." Kozue allowed.

"Fear not! I will take over the morning breakfast, if you should allow me. I must make up for my lack of initiative." Ishimaru clenched his fist.

"If you'd like, I see no reason not to." Kozue wasn't particularly keen on spending some hours in the kitchen every morning anyhow, if it were to become a daily thing.

"Thank you, Kozue! Tomorrow, you will see how Ishimaru creates the most important and nutrious meal of the day." Grabbing his bowl, he left. Almost immediately, the room felt dimmer, as though the lights themselves lost energy the moment Ishimaru left. What an odd soul.

Kozue accepted the thanks of the other students who showed up. Sakura stayed quiet, saying nothing, but Kozue could feel the satisfaction that was emanating from her. The act left her in a good mood, it seems. Finally, the last person came in. Hunched a bit into his green sweater, he gave off the air of a mouse trying to navigate between the feet of giants. As he took his bowl, he quietly thanked Kozue. Wasn't he the one who calmed people down in the gym?

Intrigued, Kozue called out, "Excuse me. Naegi, right? I've got a question to ask you."

With a slight jerk, Naegi turned back around, a nervous smile on his face, "Er, how can I help?"

Now that Kozue had his attention, she didn't know what to say. She simply wanted to talk to him. Maybe congratulate him on keeping everyone calm or something? Instead what came out was, "Can I see your e-Notebook. I want to confirm something."

Naegi hesitated. And continued hesitating. And didn't know what to say. Suddenly, it dawned on Kozue what he was fidgeting about.

"I'm not going to take it or anything. Sakura here is a witness, I just want to see if the information on both of our e-Notebooks are the same."

"...Alright then." Setting his bowl down, he dug into his sweater for the thin profile of the e-Notebook. Flicking it on, he held it out to Kozue. Without a second to waste, Kozue turned hers on and held it up next to Naegi's. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Name, Age, weight, eye color...even bust and hip measurements. All that appeared in that box was a small icon of Monokuma laughing.

"Hmm, nothing." Kozue was relieved not to have found anything.

"Can I ask what you were looking for?" Naegi rubbed his cheek, completely left in the dark about Kozue's intentions.

"Sure. Yesterday, I ran into Monokuma. I thought he played a trick on me, and was just covering my bases to make sure, even though I'm pretty sure he was just messing around."

"Ah." Naegi still looked confused. Silence reigned between the pair as Kozue tried to ffind something to talk about. Unlike Junko, he didn't have any natural peppiness or openess. He was quiet, but not like Sakura's contemplative silence. He just seemed like he was always struggling to find something to say. Or he was waiting for someone else to start talking first. A bit of a pain to talk to, in other words.

"So, I just wanted to thank you for yesterday." Kozue said.

"Thank me for something? Did I do something for you?" Now Naegi was even more confused.

"I'd say you did something for all of us." Kozue replied matter-of-factly, "You calmed down a situation that was going to take a turn for the worse."

"It was nothing. I mean, anyone from Hope's Peak could've recovered from that, right?" There was no malice or sarcasm in Naegi's voice. He truly believed that.

Too....Bright...

"Maybe, maybe not. I still felt it was important enough to say though." Kozue shrugged her shoulders.

"Thank you. Well, if there's anything else, I'm going to be off." Giving Kozue a small bow, he picked up dhis bowl of soup and walked out the door, a little more pep in his step.

Right, what did I want to talk with him for, again? At least she got something out of it. Like the fact that Monokuma hadn't messed with her e-Notebook at all. Or that his inspired little line in the gym stemmed from his naitive. Either way, an interesting conversation, though one looking on from the outside wouldn't think so. As such, Sakura moved from her statue-like stance. Ah right, after I mentioned her, I completely forgot she existed. Maybe Sakura was the reason he was nervous, and not Kozue.

"You give out your compliments easily, Kozue." Sakura commented.

Kozue shook her head, "Not easily. Giving credit where it's due. Like how well you actually cooked this meal. I just helped with the spices."

"No, it was a joint effort. Thank you for your assistance."

In unison, the pair gave each other a little bow. Huh, maybe we have more in common than I thought. With that, they exited the kitchen to join their classmates. Already, some of them were talking a little more joyfully with one another. Maizono was striking up a conversation with Naegi. Mondo with
Chihiro. Asahina immediately took up with Sakura again. Which left only Kozue.

Hmm. So if we just talked to Sakura, and she, Asahina, Chihiro, Mondo, Naegi, and Maizono are occupied with their own conversations, that leaves Ishimaru, Hagakure, Junko/Ikusaba (probably), Hifumi, and Celes, plus the missing people.

Hagakure is not all too helpful to talk with, Hifumi is going to be creepy, Ishimaru we technically just got a social increase from as if we did just talk to him, Celes... hmm. Maybe. Junko/Ikusaba... hard to say. If all goes the same, then we might want to talk to her now regardless, and see if we can glean anything off about her ahead of time. If not, then hey, we probably wouldn't mind getting to know her, she's seemed pretty nice so far.

As for the missing people, while Kyoko not being here is a bit worrying when there's two other people unaccounted for, she's going to go exploring for long stretches of time regardless and we probably just have to trust her with that. Byakuya is unlikely to do anything yet anyways, since he essentially wanted to wait and watch how a murder played out (and most/all rules were revealed) before proceeding with any plans of his own. Fukawa, who knows, what with Syo, but Kyoko does not exactly match her usual style of target, so that seems unlikely too. In any case we hopefully don't have to worry about anything like that until after the first incentive shows up- I can start overthinking things THEN, not now.

As for finding them to talk... bah. We already know how well talking to Byakuya will go, Fukawa is impossible for near ANYONE to talk to, and Kyoko we talk to more than anyone else as is because she's our sister. Let's focus on those already in front of us.

You're forgetting the Monokuma vote here.

Right you are. Though, honestly I have to wonder if what we do has literally any impact on the outcome of that situation. Monokuma is far too capricious to bother trying to convince, and in fact might be convinced only IF we give up, because we took the fun out of it or because he just decided he wanted to. And if we go back we'll find out soon enough anyways, so I have to wonder what the difference between the options is here.

[x] Give up, Monokuma is the greatest.

1.9 A Warning

Kyoko considered for a moment, thinking on what to say. How would one even begin to make someone as whimsical as Monokuma seriously entertain any notion? She knew nothing about what he wanted...except his heartfelt wishes someone in the class would meet a gruesome end at the hands of another. Not exactly much to go off of. But she had to try. The easiest and most obvious thing would be to call Monokuma a "psychopath" or a "sociopath". Often, these terms were used interchangeably, and with great deliberation from people who actually specialized in mental health.

In fact, current clinical terminology sees no difference between the two, though their are legitimate arguments for the separation of the two. Both appeared to have the same roots; heavily anti-social and/or lacking a conscience. They were described as manipulative---something that would fit Monokuma to a tee---and outwardly violent, but Monokuma hadn't manifested that quite yet. Though Kyoko had no doubt that he wouldn't hesitate to punish anyone should his rules be broken.

...

As Kyoko pondered, a thousand thoughts ran through her mind, until she finally settled on one. It was heralded by a deep sigh.

"Useless." Kyoko muttered darkly, turning away from Monokuma. She could speculate as much as she wanted, stand here for hours trying to figure out Monokuma's mental state, and debate until the sun exploded. It would get her nowhere. The fact of the matter was that she was no psychologist and her knowledge in those matters was quite limited, all she had to work with was an extremely broad diagram. It was no different than armchair generals trying to tell a real military strategist what he should've done and where his plan went wrong; in over their heads.

"You give up, Kirigiri?" Monokuma sat on his haunches, deflating like a balloon rapidly losing its air, "I thought better of you! Maybe she'll find out all your dirty secrets, I thought. How fun! Absolutely delighting. Because then we could get down to the real issue; despair!"

For a moment, Kyoko was confused, "Despair? Is this related to that whole spiel in the gym yesterday?"

"Rightly so! See, my dream is to make the entire world feel despair. I evolved specifically for this! Out in the wilds of China, gnawing on bamboo was starting to get boring so I--"

Kyoko couldn't help interrupting him, "You're not a panda."

"I'm black and white, aren't I?! Anyhoo, I boarded a plane to Japan and here we are!"

"Stop lying. All you're doing is wasting time." Kyoko was slowly starting to lose her patience. Talking with Monokuma was an exercise in futility, like banging one's head against the wall.

"Well, I guess I did cut out some stuff. Like, what did I do inbetween "boarding a plane" and "here we are"? Lots of fun stuff, lemme tell you." Monokuma guffawed, his stomach protruding out like a man with a beer gut, "Maybe one day you'll learn all about it. I'll set each of you down in a desk and just...pick your brains."

"...Regardless, you went on a tangent. I don't suppose you'll tell me what's behind the door then?" Kyoko quickly swapped subjects, sensing an aura of danger from the bear.

"Ah! Almost forgot about that. Well, I dunno. On one hand, you didn't even try. I can respect that kind of procrastination. On the other, I really wanted you to try and convince me." Monokuma rubbed his chin, apparently thinking his hardest, "How about this; in exactly 12 hours, something amazing will happen!"

What would qualify as "amazing" for someone like Monokuma? It didn't take a genius to figure out that it could mean nothing good. Already, Kyoko was on her guard. Her set shoulders stiffened, and she felt a chill crawl down her spine, as if that something "amazing" was breathing down the nape of her neck. A doll like Monokuma shouldn't be able to express any sort of human emotion, but the glee that was emanating from him was almost tangible, wrapping itself and whispering sickeningly in Kyoko's ear.

Without so much as a twitch on her face, Kyoko replied evenly, "What do you mean?"

"I'm saying, it'll be something that'll shake the foundations of the world! Or, at least, your guys' world. I mean, seriously, it's already been a day. A full day. No one's dead yet. Already, I can't bear it, if something doesn't happen soon, I might just leap into action." Monokuma let himself fall on the ground, face up, staring at the ceiling and huffing as if he'd just got done running a race.

"So, you're saying a murder will happen tonight?" A lump began to rise in Kyoko's throat. This was something huge, probably bigger than whatever was originally behind the door. She needed to tell everyone right away when she got back, otherwise something might happen that everyone would regret.

"I ain't sayin' nothin'. Other than something good will happen tonight. With that, I leave you to it. Toodles!" Instead of getting up on his feet, Monokuma elected to crabwalk out of the room, grunting the whole way. Kyoko wasn't paying attention to his antics though, as she was once again lost in thought. What would be the best thing to do when she got back? If she told everyone, then the killer would simply move his time to another place. However, if it was just Monokuma messing around with her head, then she could potentially cause harm to group morale.

"As a general rule of thumb, I like to have a copy of the menu, to calculate calories. My manager told me the organization would fire me if my waist reached past a certain measurement." Junko was excitedly talking to Kozue, the contents of her bowl long having disappeared, "But I don't think I really have a choice here. Besides, I was absolutely starving after last night."

Kozue was trying her best to seem cordial. This actually wasn't a conversation initiated by her. Junko herself had nearly dragged her to the table after her talk with Sakura concluded. From there, she'd pulled out a small bottle of nail polish remover. Already, the stench was drifting across the table, causing Kozue's nose to wrinkle. Luckily, no one was seated at the central long table, instead opting into the small circular ones. Still, Kozue had no idea what Junko was thinking, bringing something that foul smelling to breakfast. In fact, she wasn't sure her companion was thinking at all. The smell didn't seem to register to her, and she wasn't looking around to see if she was bothering anybody, hinting at having no consideration for anyone else.

"I can see that. The last time I had something to eat was in the morning. Then my sister and I arrived at the school and this whole mess happened." Kozue kept the conversation going with the minimum effort necessary. Not because she was simply tolerating Junko or anything like that. Rather, Junko jumped at the chance to--

"Right?!?! Monokuma is such a jerk, he didn't even have the decency to prep a meal for us." Junko pouted. Finishing one nail, she put the little brush back into the bottle and twisted the cap shut. Almost immediately, the air cleared. Maybe Junko was like the chemical workers from the old days. Spend so long in the presence of something harmful and your body just gets used to it. Maybe Junko lost her sense of smell or something. She certainly didn't lose her sense of fashion, otherwise, Kozue wouldn't have been breathing through her mouth to escape Junko's deadly poison of nail polish remover. Kozue nodded her head absently, twirling her bangs around her forefinger.

"My bad, am I boring you?" Junko smiled pleasantly.

"Hmm? I'm not sure what to say. Frankly, I don't think we have the same interests." Kozue said plainly.

"Well, that's prolly true. I'm called the Ultimate Fashionista. Pretty self-explanatory, right? How about you?"

"I don't know my Ultimate."

"Wha--Really?!" Juno sat up, eyes wide, "Did something happen?"

Was there any use in hiding her loss in memory? Kozue couldn't think of one off the top of her head, so she shrugged, "Not sure. Maybe whatever they used to knock us out affected me a little differently. I'm sure it's temporary."

Kozue specifically held back that Kyoko was affected too, but that was more precautionary than anything else. Not only that, she was fairly confident her condition was only temporary. The fact that she recovered some of her memories not too long after she awoke in the classroom proved this. Perhaps one day the memories will be salvageable. While she was somewhat troubled by it, she didn't really have time to really reflect upon what it meant. After all, there was a figurehead of villainy to focus on: Monokuma.

"Wow, I don't know what to say, Kozue. Should I apologize or something?" Junko set down her polish remover, looking at Kozue with concern.

"It's fine. You're not the one who did it, anyway." Kozue gave Junko a half-smile, "Off topic though, did you enjoy the meal?"

"Yeep!" Junko jumped at the suggestion of switching subjects, "This time I could eat as much as I want, though one bowl was good enough."

Kozue didn't think she was lying about how much she could eat. Junko was spending her energy talking, her food already gone, while the others were only halfway finished. The girl could certainly eat fast, though her appetite was one that was easily satiated. As she talked about counting calories, it wasn't hard to figure out that a model like Junko didn't exactly receive hearty portions of anything. Kozue actually thought about asking what the pink-haired girl ate on a daily basis. Maybe something of value could be obtained from this typical conversation, even if it was only marginally interesting trivia. But she decided against. It could also be a point of sensitivity. Kozue had heard about models feeling miffed about the way they were asked what they eat. Sometimes, semantics and word choices were everything, and Kozue really didn't want to try and tip-toe that line.

"Be sure to thank Sakura, as well. She did a lot of the work too." With that, Kozue rose from the table.

"What, you're leaving?" Junko's face fell somewhat, and she let her face plant onto the table, "You can't leave me here alone with all these people!"

Kozue was confused, "Why not?"

"Because I don't know who to talk to. With my luck, I'd probably say something to piss off Mondo over there. I really don't need anyone trying to shiv me in the night, y'know?" Junko threw up her hands in exasperation.

"You talked to me."

"But you're different. You talked to me earlier when we were at the big ol' metal door. That means, uh, we can talk" Junko grinned widely.

But Kozue wasn't convinced, "That seems arbitrary. So if someone else initiated conversation first, you'd be fine with that?"

"Yep!"

"...Okay then. But I do have a reason for wanting to leave. In case you haven't noticed, Kyoko isn't here. I didn't see her on the way either. That means she's probably exploring the school and I should do the same---"

"Eeeehhhh, never mind. You should probably go and do that." Junko sat back in her chair, her eyes glassing over suddenly, her tone cold "Like I said, I don't want to end up being the first victim. I think I'll just go back to my room after this. Laters."

Eyebrows furrowing at Junko's sudden change in persona, Kozue took her leave, weaving between the other students' tables. The sudden change in attitude surprised Kozue, she'd gone from being friendly and amiable to frosty and indifferent. In someone else's case, they might've gotten hurt over the frigid treatment, but Kozue simply found it...interesting. It seems that Junko wasn't as bright and ditzy as she first appeared. Glancing over her shoulder, Kozue saw that the Ultimate Fashionista was doing her nails again, completely ignoring everyone in her surroundings. What an odd one.

Exiting, Kozue found herself looking at a familiar checkboarded floor and sterile white walls. She didn't she would ever get used to the decor used by whoever designed the school. Colors were lambasted everywhere, bright and eye shattering at some points. She wanted to say the aesthetic was pleasing, but that would be a lie. It was as surprising as finding a strip club in a bank; unsightly and reeking of bad choices. At least in Kozue's opinion. Out there existed some interior designer gushing about his creation. Shaking her head, Kozue made to the entrance to the school, where the aforementioned color clashes was at its worse.

"Hey." Another cold voice stopped Kozue. This one was quiet, exuding a different sort of confidence than Byakuya. Turning around, she found herself facing the gothic dressed girl, someone Kozue didn't expect at all. Her black dress with white ruffles was archaic, yet it complemented her blood red eyes, which held Kozue in their gaze. If she remembered correctly, this girl was Celes. Much like Kyoko and herself, Celes also distanced herself from everyone else, which wasn't anything surprising, really. The majority of the students did so after the meeting. Well, except for Asahina, Sayaka, and Sakura. Maybe those three were the weird ones.

"Did you need something?" Kozue was polite, keeping her eyes locked onto Celes'.

"Yes. I was wondering; why did you do all that? Was there a reason for it?" Celes' red eyes were bright with interest, her hand covering her mouth, revealing a silver claw on her forefinger.

"...I don't think so." The reply was slow, but Kozue suddenly felt like she was in an interrogation room, "It was just a suggestion by Sayaka and Asahina."

"Hmph, you're lying. I think you're betting on a horse here. I just don't know why." Celes leaned forward, staring Kozue down, "None of those three seemed particularly bright, but you don't strike me as some idealistic idiot. Why are you trying to be friends with them? Especially in this type of situation?"

Suspicion was this girls creed, doubt her watchword. What kind of person would always find themselves thinking the worst of people, Kozue wondered. Probably someone who has been used a lot...or is manipulative themselves. Either way, it would still be wise to tip-toe the line around Celes. She was quite sharp, the look in her eyes cunning, her words calculating. Someone dangerous. Usually, Kozue didn't really on "gut instincts", but something told her that it would be a logical decision even after evaluating her.

"I think it's not wrong to make friends here. I will admit it's a little hard to do so, because of Monokuma's special clause. But establishing a rapport could help foster feelings that would prevent someone from acting irrationally." Kozue was cautious in her reasoning.

"Oh, is that all? I understand simple wishes, but you honestly can't believe friendship would stop anyone with enough motivation, right?" Celes chuckled, "Press the right buttons and people reveal everything to you."

Kozue clicked her tongue, "I agree. But I fall into the camp of hoping for less collateral damage. There's no point in making things more harder for yourself. Thus, I guess I am going the "friendship" route, yes."

"But why? One must be able to do anything by one's self. If help is to be acquired, I'd rather stand above them than beside them." Celes smiled. It wasn't a dishonest smile but Kozue could see a dark intensity hidden within those crimson eyes.

"Being in direct control of everything and anything is a fools errand. That's the definition of putting all your eggs into one basket. What happens if you're not around. What would the ones you "stand above" do?" Kozue was patient, but her eyes were flitting towards the school, "Chances are, they won't know what to do."

"A droll argument. Being in control doesn't mean robbing your subordinates of their intelligence." Celes rolled her eyes, "Regardless, I see what you're doing. It's...confusing. I hope your trust in these people doesn't come around to stab you in the back."

With a small titter, Celes moved past Kozue, her boots lightly tapping the linoleum. Kozue stayed frozen, listening until the other girls steps faded into the distance. Then, the sound of a slamming door. It seems she too, decided that she would stay within her room, like Junko. Celes could certainly make a formidable opponent, but for as sharp as she seemed, she missed one crucial aspect.

"Who said I trusted any of them?"

With that, Kozue strode down the corridor leading into the school, lost to the darkness.

Monokuma's dead tired.

Let's run down the list. Monokuma's little speech there can imply that:

-He's going to show them the computer room discs (likely)
-He's got Sakura on an earlier deadline than before
-He's going to announce a new rule
-He's just trying to screw with Kyoko (likely)

Key here is, it's morning. Nobody is going to be asleep or going to sleep in 12 hours, it'll still be too early (like, 7 PM? Unless this is a very late breakfast). So unless the murderer is going to be so incredibly efficient and uncatchable that they can do their work without being noticed even while everyone is up, a straight up murder seems unlikely. Ikusaba could possibly do it, but that doesn't seem to make sense; what would be the plan there and how would Junko have convinced her to do it? It pits her sister against everyone else, which means either Ikusaba dies (which it doesn't seem like she'd have agreed to since Junko had to trick her into it in the game proper) or everyone else does, thus ending the game almost immediately. One or the other would likely object to that. That being said, the foul smelling nail polish remover is concerning, and we should probably try to stay away when it's being released into the air. Not sure what to think about that. So far canon seems relatively intact, so it's probably just the tapes and such. Is there any need for us to inform the others of such? Probably not... but if Monokuma presents the information in a way so as to imply "Kyoko knew!" and thus that she's in with him or something, that could be bad. She may want to inform Kozue and get her opinion/help in regards to the situation, honestly. She has that option here.

As for investigating... is the school store open yet? I'd say we investigate there. In game it's only used for the Monokuma machine, but it could easily contain something of use if we actually look around a little. Probably something Monokuma thinks DOESN'T have any use, but there's also a lot to investigate there period, so yeah, that's my vote.

And for free time... if we want skills, we should aim for someone we're already in good with, likely Isihimaru given the social increase bonus we've got. If we want to change the plot, we should aim to talk with Naegi, Junko, and possibly Sayaka if things are scheduled to go the same way (unlikely, as this is a murder mystery sort of quest, but we could be the reason WHY it wouldn't go the same way). We could try to cut off a known murder that's going to happen down the road, but without concentrating fully on Celes/Chihiro for most upcoming free times they're unlikely to reveal their deepest secrets to us, which is the only way we're likely stopping those via free time. I'd vote Junko just because there's not a lot of time left before she's scheduled to bite it, but we don't even know that's necessarily going to happen. Any opinions?

[x] Find Kozue, tell her what Monokuma said, and get her opinion on what you should do. She's spent more time with the others and likely can better gauge whether it would be a good idea to tell them something may or may not be coming.
[x] Investigate school shop (if open).
[x] Hang out with...
[x] Junko. Again. She's indicated she enjoys your company to at least some degree, and something about her still seems kind of off...

Ah, alright then. Sorry, wasn't quite clear with how the free time point part is displayed separately from the actual options. In that case, I think we investigate the store. We can talk to people later. Of course, if the store isn't OPEN, I revert my vote to Junko again.
