"Sure. Why not." You sigh, setting down your arquebus on one of the pews before kneeling beside it. If you were to be frank, there wasn't really much that you could do to help. Your cover was a pilgrim for one, and keeping it up would require you to seek the nearest chapel you could find on your journey and pray.
'Perhaps the Most High would give you boons to help us in this journey.'
Maybe, maybe not. That was the cornerstone of faith, wasn't it? To keep on believing even if one cannot see it with their own eyes.
"So, while I'm getting the reagents done, how about we talk for a little while?" Eremir asks, and you raise a brow at him as he begins rummaging through the cupboards located at the left of the main altar. "Catch up with one another, hm?"
"I... don't understand."
"Well, you don't really need to understand a friend that's concerned for your wellbeing, yes?" Eremir replies, a grin to his face as he sets down a few vials of holy water, some herbs, and a pestle onto the altar. "So, how's your work in Kanjishir going? Cleansed a few greater demons yet?"
"No." You reply with furrowed brows. "And it's Panjishir."
"As much as I would like to care about your incessant corrections of that little area, I really couldn't be bothered." The priest replies in a dry manner, dumping the vials of holy water in a goblet and sprinkling a few herbs onto it. With a huff and a shake of their head, they retrieve a sealed jar of what appeared to be violet cream from the altar itself, before smearing it all over the goblet. "Still, do spill out the beans, will you? It's been a while since all of us met up with one another."
You glance towards the Anghelos, who was floating upside-down with arms crossed over its chest. 'I am just as confused as you are.'
That made the both of you, then. Still, not that you could simply reveal to the priest in front of you that your memories were spotty... but at the very least, you could at least try to piece together what you were before the entire incident with that golden... that golden flame...
"Hm, not that much of a talker, eh? You haven't changed much, then. Somehow, I don't think that's a bad thing." A thin smile crosses Eremir's face, picking up a censer and wafting its fumes down onto the goblet. "Much can be praised about a man who's unchanging as his beliefs, but there's still some caveats to be had about such a thing."
Whatever was in the goblet begins to shine with a golden glow, and Eremir puts the censer away, slowly moving towards you with a careful gait. He stops a few seconds later, nothing more than an arm's reach away, where you could see the glowing liquid that now filled the goblet.
"The world changes. You might get buried if you don't change with the times." The priest ends, a grim look on his face. His expression shifts into something more genial, as he tosses the goblet's contents up in the air. "Well, that's all the advice this old man is going to give. Do kneel a bit, will you?"
You do so, and Eremir sticks a hand through the goblet's contents, droplets of molten gold seemingly rebounding at his touch and swirling around his arm.
"𝕻𝖆𝖑𝖆, 𝖕𝖆𝖑𝖆, 𝖕𝖆𝖑𝖆." Eremir speaks in a solemn tone, lowering his arm and smudging it on your forehead. The motes of golden light surge forward from his arm, burying themselves into your skin, and you take a deep breath as the feeling of life flows through your body. "Let Your Grace fill your servant. Let Your Protection ward off those who would wish him harm. Let Your Wisdom guide him, so that he may accomplish Your Will."
The final mote of light sinks into your forehead, and the priest releases his grip, allowing you to stagger forward and let you breathe out a sigh of relief.
"... Well, that's all well and good." Eremir speaks, nodding in your direction with a thin smile. "That should keep you safe for the time being, especially since you'll be going out there when the storm hits."
You frown. You could clearly remember not telling anyone that you would be doing so. "How do you know that?"
"An old man just knows these things." He replies with a grin and a twinkle in his eye, "Now shoo. I still have to fortify this quaint little chapel, and that means I can't do anything done with you lounging about. Got it?"
You took the dismissal for what it was and left, sending one last bow in their direction before closing the door to the chapel behind you.
As you exit the chapel, the swirling winds immediately hit you, followed by the distinctive tang of lightning and the crackling of flames. Your eyes widen, already hearing the cackling of demons echoing through the air, and you zero in on the walls of the garrison in less than a second, all but hearing the shouts and screams that reminded you of combat, of being on the frontlines as the leader of your cohort orders that suicidal charge...
The turmoil of the Edai grows even more chaotic, as its mostly-shapeless form began coalescing into motes of acrid red. Lightning strikes in front of you, a nigh-instantaneous crackle that blinds you for but an instant. The scent of glassed dirt fills your nose, the blinding light still making spots in your vision, but it was not as prevalent as the cackling of raucous demons that came with the Edai's lightning, of demons from beyond the Materiam manifesting just meters away from you.
You could see the Anghelos slam down their staff, preventing a barb made out of some sort of fang from reaching you. Blue fire erupts from their presence, crackling with unbridled power, and forcing the demons back from their initial position as they braced into what seems like floating golden lamps.

"𝔄𝔫𝔤ℌ𝔈𝔩𝔬𝔖." One of them hissed, its lone eye burning with malice. "𝔜𝔬𝔯𝔯 ℭ𝔒ℜ𝔭𝔰𝔢 𝔟𝔢 𝔤𝔘𝔇 𝔣𝔬𝔡𝔇𝔈ℜ 𝔣𝔬𝔯 𝔱ℌ𝔈 𝔲𝔖𝔘ℜ𝔓𝔢𝔯."
'Try me.' The Anghelos all but hissed, their flame-like body swirling chaotically as they snarled, for the first time since you've known them. 'I'll render you all into ashes!'
[] [ATTACK] The Edai has roiled onto the garrison, and the maelstrom in its wake has summoned demons from Beyond the Materiam. Send them back where they came from.
- [] [PHYS] Charge the demons with the butt of your arquebus, and beat them to death.
- [] [GUN] Fire your arquebus at one of the demons.
- [] [FIRE] Channel the powers of your Contract, and use Kalayo.
[] [NEGOTIATE] You didn't have time for this. As much as you would like to kill these demons on the spot, you neither had time nor patience to deal with them when the rest of the garrison is being beset by the Edai. Find out what they want, and give it if you have to. There were lives on the line here, and they were much more important than material possessions.
[] [FLEE] Despite your Contract, and despite the Grace bestowed upon you by Eremir, it was three against two. A disparity in numbers that might prove overwhelming if you make one tiny mistake. Flee from this place to somewhere that you can eke an advantage to.
- [] [CHAPEL] Fall back to the chapel, where there is no doubt that the presence of the Most High would ward them off.
- [] [SEEK] With the walls beset by demons, and no doubt the chapel being such an obvious fallback position... You would have to wing your escape. Run these demons around while taking potshots at them, and see if you could help the others in the meantime.
QM: Oh thank fuck that there was a vote. Mwah. Love you, @Darth. In any case, That Compendium tag that was languishing off in Informational is now updated! Well technically, I still need to add human characters... but that would probably come later. Might want to give that a look every time you finish a battle, so you can exploit the combat mechanics to the fullest.
And if you die in an encounter... well, it's part of the story. Don't be too bummed out about it. 😎

Even with the Grace, I'm still kinda interested in this option
[X] [ATTACK] The Edai has roiled onto the garrison, and the maelstrom in its wake has summoned demons from Beyond the Materiam. Send them back where they came from.
- [X] [GUN] Fire your arquebus at one of the demons.
Your gun fires. Blessed lead flares out from the barrel of the arquebus, as the shot pierces through the demon... or so it would've been. Instead, all it does is to force the demon to pop back inside its golden sheathe, all but shrieking as the bullet impacts its golden exterior.
A web of cracks spread out from the initial impact, all but shattering the carapace, and the demon slithers out of its rapidly-decaying armor before hissing in your direction.
"YoU!" It screeches, its voice all but hissing even without a mouth. "I'lL drAW yOu Into qUARters MYSelF!"
It charges with another screech, and you contemptuously dodge to the side, hitting it with the butt of your arquebus and sending it sprawling down towards the ground. You stomp on it a second later, watching as its viscera splattered all over the ground, and you let out a huff as you turn back towards the other demons in the immediate area.
Too little, too late, however. The momentary focus in your elimination of the demon had all but left you open to another, and you could see the lance of fire sailing towards your direction with no time left to dodge.

'CHILD OF MAN!'
You scream, as the lance all but pierces your side and sends you skidding across the ground. You could already see your life flash before your eyes once more, this time under the rictus of a malevolent orange flame... Only for a hand to come up to your left side, and report no injuries whatsoever.
[Grace lost.]
With a gasp, you stagger back up while using the butt of your arquebus as an aid, watching with just the slightest bit of awe as golden motes of light begin to slough off your body. The sudden displacement of wind alerts you to the presence of the Anghelos, all but putting themselves in front of you with their blue flames all but turning white in heat.
'You are... safe.' They speak, surprise coloring in their tone. 'That is good. For a moment, I thought I would...'
The Anghelos shakes their head a second later. '... Hm, never mind. Shall we finish these foul demons off?'
[] [ATTACK] One down, two remaining. If you keep up the momentum, then there's no doubt that you'll be able to get this over with and actually help the other soldiers in the garrison.

- [] [NEGOTIATE] Perhaps these demons would be more amenable to a resolution, seeing as your numbers were currently even. Not that you had much faith in it being successful.
[] [FLEE] Repositioning is key to getting this fight over with, and you didn't really fancy your chances after that close call.
- [] [CHAPEL] Retreat back to the chapel, and find something that could turn the tide. Maybe some incense and herbs could do the trick...
- [] [SEEK] Part of the garrison's inner walls had collapsed, sending rubble all over the courtyard. You could use it to bide some time for you to get more important things done.

We are a gunman. we should never stay still and fin some cover.
Oh, would you look at that, we smacked the eldritch (language) right out of the demon.

Life taken cannot be easily regained, but this shall serve as penance for the sins of my kind. Our souls are aligned, our fates intertwined... and perhaps, may you find the strength to forgive us for what we have done.
𝔄𝔤𝔥𝔢, 𝔎𝔬𝔩𝔩𝔡𝔞𝔦, 𝔜𝔬𝔡𝔥𝔬. May our Contract be signed, writ upon the Sight of the Most High.
By Their Will, you shall be henceforth known as the Child of Man.
"We do, when one of them nearly killed me and I can't reload shot." You mutter back, eyes still trying to peer out of the wall of flames that the Anghelos had conjured from the Veil with but a thought. Shapes still flitted by, no doubt the demons themselves trying to look for an opening, but even then you could hear the sound of combat, of clashing blades, human screams, and the cackling of more demons taking their fill of misery.
A part of you twitched at that. That wanted to roar and tear through those blasphemous beasts apart with naught but your bare hands. But there's no doubt that you'd die if you simply waded through a throng of demons with no support, and while the Anghelos' presence was comforting...
'I do not like the look on your face.'
... Well, you'd be able to convince them. Hopefully. "We run."
'We do not retreat against demonic scum.'
"Reposition, then. Either way, it's the same thing." The Anghelos lashes out with the arm that held their staff, nothing more than a blur of ashen wood in your eyes as they drive off an enterprising demon and skewering another. "I cannot help you if I'm being poked through by demons, or if I have no shot in my gun."
The Anghelos turns towards you and stares, twin black dots floating in a writhing sea of blue. You could almost ignore the way they nonchalantly held the demon that they impaled against their wall of flames, screaming their last before they were exorcised.
'You need a blade.'
"So I've been told." You grumble, shaking your head in response as you hold your arquebus by the butt. "I'll do so once we get out of this alive. Now, are you going to help me with this or not?"
A few seconds pass, before the Anghelos slowly nods in response to your question. 'What would you have me do?'
"Quick burst of flame. Not enough to actually damage them, but more than enough to make them wary and give us enough time to get out of here."
'That, I can do.' The Anghelos nods once more, turning around and flaring their wings. The air all but quivers in anticipation, as the tips of the Anghelos' flames begin turning white. Ribbons of white-tinged flame swirl around their free hand, three-fingered talons gripping tight on an expanding orb of holy fire...
... Before all of it was unleashed in a singular burst.
Just as the heat lapped across your face, your vision was replaced with those of white feathers, and your stomach drops as you feel the wind whistling through your ears. Vertigo flashes through your head, leaving you light-headed for a few seconds... before it all suddenly stops, as you feel the Anghelos' miracle course through your veins.
The wings wrapping around you suddenly pull away, and you are left to stare downwards at a garrison under demonic siege. Your eyes widen at the various plumes of flame that had sprung up all over the place, of broken battlements and walls, of the demons swarming through the openings... and the men and women fighting to keep the demons at bay.
All of them stopped. All of them turned to stare at the plume of bluish-white plume that emanated from where you once were, the broken remains of a courtyard charred black by flame. It doesn't take long before the plume itself disappears, breaking apart into motes of light that disappeared onto the wind.
While the momentary distraction had been a breath of fresh air from being almost killed, it certainly didn't stop you from noticing the overall lay of the land.
The people guarding the garrison were now fighting harder, bolstered by what they were calling as a miracle from the Most High. While the other demons were still finding purchase throughout the rubble, most of them were either held back or killed before they could cause more damage due to the defenders' increased morale.
And yet... your eyes were drawn to the chapel itself, something gnawing in your gut. It was nothing more than a split-second reaction, one that could be easily dismissed as nerves, but as bubbling crimson lightning all but slams through the chapel's facade, you knew that this was somewhat different.
'We cannot be in both places at once, Child of Man.' The Anghelos warns. 'Our fates are intertwined. If one of us dies...'
Then the other bites the dust as well. Quite... inconvenient.
You take a deep breath, and steel yourself for what's to come. "I need to reload my gun."
The Anghelos doesn't reply, instead waving a hand over the barrel of your arquebus before it begins to flicker with bluish flames.
'Done.' The Anghelos states. 'Now where do we go?'
