Green Arts seem boring to me. I hope the voters have ideas on where to take it at the least.

I'm not sure what you mean? It's not locking you into anything and there's nothing you have to do with it. All it means is that Finn has a slight affinity towards the subject coming into his first school year. Or to put it mechanically, Green Arts is (2/10) compared to all the other subjects which are (1/10) at the moment.

This a good write-in? I based it on the "swipe candy" option, but with a bit more Tom Sawyer flare to it to fit in with ol' Dixie

Yeah, it's fine.

[X] How to cook and prepare Louisiana Creole dishes

-It's informed by the place we call our home.
-It synergizes with our nature-adjacent theme through its prominent grains, vegetables, fruits and spices.
-It's a good, mundane base for our future potion-making endevous.

Yeah, but it shows intent towards what direction people want to take this dude. And I dont realy have even the vague idea where that could be.

Maybe it will blow up in my face, but I don't really want people to take the character in a certain direction. At least not in the sense of building him up like an RPG character. It's why I don't include the mechanical benefits until after the choice is made. I want choices to be made because they appeal in and of themselves, not just because they give Finn +1 in charms or an extra set of dice to roll.

The goal is for Finn to simply develop, not be developed, if that makes sense.

I think it's worth it to expand a little on the quest mechanics now that Finn has (2/10) in both an Attribute (Body) and Skill (Green Arts).

Let's say Finn is outside and has to pull a Mandrake out of the ground for whatever reason.

First, there would be a D100 roll competing against a DC. In order to not have things based purely on chance, I would then add the relevant Attribute * the relevant Skill to the roll result.

So let's pretend he rolled a 50. For this specific scenario, I would then add the result of Finn's Body Attribute (2) * his Skill in the Green Arts (2) for a +4 modifier. Making the end result 54.

The general idea being that if he topped out (10/10) in both the relevant Attribute and the relevant Skill, he would never get anything less than a critical success no matter the D100 roll (due to the +100 modifier). Or to put it another way, he is so good that luck (the D100 roll) has nothing to do with it.

On the other hand, if he was absolute trash in both the Attribute and Skill (1/10), his success would depend on almost nothing but luck (+1 modifier).

Hope that makes sense. Although to be clear, don't expect to get (10/10) in anything really. That's Dumbledore level, nothing that a student should be able to reach.

I like this one. Cooking is cool- outside of being a good life skill it also has the side effects of teaching you how to clean up after yourself, pay attention to what you're doing, and the satisfaction of Creating a Thing and then Sharing the Thing with other people in a positive social context.

Plus there are some really solid recipes that I've always enjoyed when I eat them. Dirty rice especially is my favorite rice variant.

If that's the case, is it possible for us to get a character sheet at some point?

I mean, my first thought on seeing "Green Arts" was that we could make some cool poisons, or even some Voodoo Potions! It's Louisiana after all.

Can't really say I'm that sad about Creole cooking winning. I obviously still like my idea of making MC's new friend the Tom Sawyer to our Huckleberry Finn, but learning Creole cooking is also a really fun write-in! :D

Is "Creole vs Cajun" a thing? Because I get the feeling it's the non-natives that argue over it and Louisianians just shrug and take both.

I was thinking more of the dishes that apparently Finn will be learning about...and now I'm getting hungry. For either creole or cajun cooking. :sour:

Creole and cajun tend to use different spices and meats for their food. VERY different tastes and looks, though both equally delicious.

According to neworleans.com: "Among the many unique differences between the two...Cajun and Creole food are both native to Louisiana and can be found in restaurants throughout New Orleans. One of the simplest differences between the two cuisine types is that Creole food typically uses tomatoes and tomato-based sauces while traditional Cajun food does not."

Obviously there's a lot more to it than that, but that's one big difference right there.
