スピリッツの街 : The City of Spirits (Or, you are a Youkai in Edo Period Japan!)

[X] "...Is this why we're safe?" (Human Origin)
[X] "I wanna hit people from miles away!" (Archer Class)

[X] "...Is this why you married papa?" (Half-Yōkai Origin)
[X] "I wanna hit people from miles away!" (Archer Class)
[X] Akihito Sasaki (First then last)

Gonna be honest, Half-Yokai is an interesting concept, if just because of the probable prejudice we'll face from both sides and trying to find our place in the world.

Also, guessing our Mother will be a Kitsune if we're any part Yokai considering the mask.

since i have very little to do right now lemme break down the names we have in circulation right now, based on google:

Surnames:

Tengen - Two character surname, whose characters are taken from Chinese. Can resolve into either "Heaven Expert" (天玄) or "Heaven String" (天弦) depending on which is the second character.

Dogra - uh....this seems like an Indian name with very little sourcing on the ground; the best I've got is "hill-dwellers between Kashmir and Punjab from Dogra district.

Tsuchimikado - (土御門) Last name of Emperor Tsuchimikado from 1198-1210. Also the last name of a character from A Certain Magical Index.

Sasaki - Three character surname, based on 佐 (sa), meaning "help, aid",々(repeat previous syllable "sa"), and (木 ) "ki", meaning "tree, wood", for a total kanji of 佐々木.

First -

Ahem. If possible, please choose a name.

Example of Japanese boy names:

Akira, Kyou, Junpei, Hayato, Ayumu, Daisuke, Haru, Hideki, Hiro, Hakuno, Kenji, etc.

- i long for a swift end and am willing give a vote for such a gift -

Names:

Mitsuomi - (光臣)* Note that there are a bunch of possible first characters here and only one real second character; for this reason, translations may vary. Translates as (光) "light", (臣) "servant".

Baka - ...either it's trying to call our MC an idiot, or this is another foreignism.

Akihito - (明仁) Two character name, (明) (aki) meaning "bright", and (仁) (hito) meaning "compassionate".

Seigen - several meanings with several different kanji spellings and i'm not tryharding that much tonight.

Kagura - (神楽) One of the two possibilities for the name Kagura, this one is composed of two characters: 神 (Ka), meaning "god", and 楽 (gura), meaning "easy".

Junpei - several meanings with several different kanji spellings, see Seigen

I wanted to make a Japanese name that hinted "ghost bow", but I think yumi yuri wouldn't really work here...
...
if you really squinted, i think it's possible to hint "spirit archer" with Kagura Matsumoto, combining Kagura with the surname Matsumoto (two kanji surname: 松本 , meaning "pine/fir tree", and "base, root, origin" in that order), creating a word salad of "Spirit easy origin of tree", which sort of implies a spirit easily being the origin of a tree which is sort of like how an archer will be the origin of their (presumably wooden) arrow.

Maybe.

[X] "...Is this why we hide?" (Yōkai Origin)
[X] "I wanna make sure my prayers protect everyone!" (Priest Class)
[X] Akihito Sasaki (First then last)
Like the Veekie said, Clerics are rare and I want to see them show up more often!

Alright, to encourage discussion, I'll be taking a few hours to answer any questions anyone might have about the Quest's mechanics or something else about the setting, such as basic questions and such.

Feel free to @ me, I'll be here all day.

[X] "...Is this why we're safe?" (Human Origin)
[X] "I wanna be the greatest samurai!" (Samurai Class)
[X] Fujimaru Akira

Alright, so, uh, i don't know what to ask because there's not much to go on, but i might as well get started:

@Celestial Speck

1. What's the setting of this quest? Presumably it's a city with youkai spirits and fireworks, but beyond that, what country and era are we in, roughly?

2. What are the mechanics of this quest? Is there a quest whose mechanics might be similar?

First off, this is ancient Japan. It's currently the Edo era, just right at the beginning of it. ('No more wars', ha)

This quest will follow real-life events with a big grain of salt. It won't be historically accurate, at least not that much. (Think Fate: It follows the same story but adds more stuff to it.)

Also, the mechanics of the Quest will be simple. It'll simply be you guys dictating your actions, strategies, and spells. You'll have skills, but they won't work like DnD. There will be different mechanics, but none of them will involve heavy rolling of dice. The story mechanics will take similarity to Xander Quest, a quest way back in SpaceBattles. Of course, I'll roll some dice or two to decide a few things, but you won't have to pain your head around.

...Of course, I can change such thing, if people want something more complex.

Sorry but I'm not sorry

Just post warring era? That changes a few things in the equation. Shifting from Samurai to Priest class as the Turtle is very keen on getting the samurai class power in control. Priests on the other hand are less of a focus and have as much social standing as samurai. Plus Yokai tendencies, if any, are easier to hide with priestly reasons.

We are the answer to all living things that cry out for peace
If you absolutely must, at least have a touch of class and roll with the actual source material instead. I could almost get behind voting for the distant progeny of the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, The Monkey King, Sun Wukong.
A knock off from a knock off from a knock off is much less exciting in my opinion.

Then: Which types of Youkai are common? And are there ones that are more, or less, tolerated by humanity?

It depends on the region you're in. In cities, Youkai are less predominant, of course, but it isn't unheard of them hiding among cities, generally, Youkai with shapeshifting abilities. Those cases generally involve them hiding into their society to eat them. In mountain areas, things like dragons and Oni are more common, while underground more freaky looking Youkai spend their time. It really depends on the story on the place, as well as its story and habitants. Youkai are wild, and some are even completely unique types.

Sorry for late response. Drama happened.

You would not believe how excited I am after reading that. Both because of the whole 'eating people' thing, and also the wide variety of Youkai out there.

No worries on the time on the response. This is a forum, not a chat room. Replies taking less than a few hours are far from 'late'.

@Celestial Speck
How do unions between humans and Yōkai happen?
Can you tell us more about the roles of the classes we can choose in this setup's society?

Unions are in, marriage, or alliances in general?
Also, Priest is generally people who worship Kami and gods, and generally use their powers to 'purify' demons and exorcise them. Their prayers and artifacts are a good way to protect against demons. Samurai serve a lord, most of the times. Ronin are samurais without serving any lord, which is seen as a big taboo, both are capable of withstanding great hits, and even deflecting arrows and bullets in some cases, as well as other great feats of strength. Shinobi are...Ninjas. Generally seen as mercenaries who'd do a lot of things for anyone. They use skills to hide, confuse others, and sometimes create some minor illusions, as well as using hand signals to create small but effective effects on their body. Like making their heart beat faster, slower, lower your blood pressure, etc. (Yes, I know, Naruto, but this shit actually existed back then.)

Amusingly enough, history confirms the existence of Ninja as a thing. Much of their myth has been over-hyped, but they were mercenary agents of espionage, infiltration, sabotage, and assassination.
So. As a second source with some knowledge of the actual history involved, yes. Can confirm Ninja were a thing.

You did not mention mage, martial artist, and archer.
I was thinking about, well, not so much marriage as procreation, but now I have become curious about actual marriages (who would even perform them?) and alliances.

Oop, sorry, I forgot. But Martial Artists are pretty self-explanatory, they are experts of a certain style, one they can be taught by or create one themselves. Martial Artists have high physical prowess capable of breaking even swinging swords at their fastest, and breaking islands on their strongest. Their reach is generally low, but they can reach essentially Yasuri Shichika levels of power if they train hard enough.
Mages, or Magic Users, are being capable of controlling their soul and expanding it out to create physical power. By controlling their emotions, they can reach to a self-taught type of magic, such as Onmyōdō, Alchemy, among others. They're different to Priests in the sense that their powers aren't divine, and aren't effective against demon-based Youkai and other types of demons.
Archers are...Well, Archers. They're suited for mobility and recon and have high senses. They are similar to Shinobi in a way, at least the most powerful ones. They can snipe out their targets are miles away and are have some of the highest reflexes.

Fun thing about classes is: They aren't eternal. You're simply picking what you're most proficient it in the beginning. You can start training with a sword at any time, and be able to do some stuff. As long as you keep training on it, that is. Memory is a thing!

Also, info about alliances will be revealed in the story. As well as marriage.

What do they do in society? What jobs/roles woud they have?

Again, that varies. It's just like in real life. You can do your own thing or work for others. Be a mercenary, an adventurer, or work under a lord. I won't delve into too much detail because again, some stuff is gonna be revealed in story posts.
