(Omake ...) Grumpy Ser Percival

(Sorry, I tried to find some sort of quick ghostly sound effect, but I couldn't.)

Name: Sean Nelson

Age of Death: 22

Cause of Death: Hit by drunk driver.

Self-Image: A young man with short brown hair, silver eyes and wearing a hooded cloak.

Personality: On his own time, Sean is a quiet man, willing to spend hours in his own thoughts as he reads or watches Youtube videos of stage magicians. However, when around others, he wears the mask of an outgoing performer, amazing audiences with sleight of hand and amusing them with his performance banter.

Life Story: Sean was an above average student, but his quiet, introverted nature often left him feeling ostracized by his peers. That changed during his high-school's talent show, where he showed the stage magic abilities that he'd been developing from a young age. This act raised him from "weird" to "eccentric," and he found he actually liked the art of performing under the right circumstances. He had dreams of becoming professional, even doing some part-time shows during collage. His dreams were cut short, however, by a drunken driver.

Profession: Stage Magician

Manifestations: Visual Presence 1. Kinetic Force 1, Save 2 (I'm allowed to do that, right?)

Awakening
Sean's eyes snapped open as he tried to spin around, looking for the source of the roaring car noise that was the last thing he remembered. All he found, however, was a stifling blackness with only a strange buzzing noise to keep him company.

"Am I blind?" he thought desperately as he felt a strange lurch, only to realize that he was now face-to-face with the floor... face-to-floor? No, that didn't sound right either... what was he doing he needed to figure this out now! "Help!" he cried, trying to push himself up, only to realize that his arms were going through the ground.

What?

Slowly, he tried to stand without the help of his, feeling himself floating upwards... upwards... through the darkness... and finding himself looking down at a bed with a person on it.

Himself. Bloodied. Bandaged. Surrounded by doctors and nurses, all of whom were backing slowly away.

Not believing what his eyes were telling him, Sean's eyes were drawn along the path of a few wires that stood out for some reason, and then he found the source of the buzzing: a flat-lining heart monitor.

"He's gone," one of the doctors said sadly, not knowing that "he" was right there to hear them.

"But I'm right here..." Sean said desperatly. "I'm... I'm here..."

The doctors paid no mind to his denial, simply starting to clean up the supplies that had failed to save his life. That was when it hit Sean: he was dead. He was dead and gone and what was he going to do now and...

'Exist,' a firm voice said in his mind. 'Cogito ergo sum: You think therefore you are. You're a ghost, but you're still here. There must be a reason, go find it rather than whining about it.'

'Yes,' Sean thought, flipping himself upright and forcing his eyes from his own corpse. He'd been given some sort of second chance, and he was going to make the best of it. There must be other ghosts around somewhere, he'd go talk to them, maybe get some answers.

Who knows, maybe they like magic tricks.

...So did Sean mispronounce his name on accident, or does Sir Percival always do this to new ghosts?
No He does not do it to each new ghost, al though that be funny too.
Part of the reason He doesn't donut to each new ghost this situation in particular came from Percival being fed up With all the nicknames and Sean seeing trying to get his attention my saying something that vaguely sounded like his name, So it triggert him.

Sean: Sir perhaps you-
Inner Percival: ...this magus just called us a nickname...PURGE
*Percival draws his handgun*

Granted, Percival did not know He hadn't met Sean before and probally apologised later (while covertly threating him to never call him by a nickname)

That chicken-stitching MORON! (Week 5)
GM note: Ectoplasm Tracking is now being delegated to @ConfusedPotato as is regular XP progression, Tangibility growth, and Statuses. I want to have no mechanical role in this Quest aside from arbitration, writing, and formatting votes.

Also, the necromancer just got himself simultaneously killed and mutated by the Nullplane.

Executive Decision: Talk with the Sterlings

It's been precisely 18 hours since Annie's death, and her family is not taking it well. Her father is slumped over the table, obviously not handling his grief well. Annie's mother is obsessively cleaning everything in the house, apparently trying to take her mind off what happened. In the back yard, Annie's big brothers are half-heartedly tossing a football to each other, clearly deeply saddened.

Even though Annie isn't terribly good at Manifesting herself yet, she's still able to make her presence known, and it was ultimately decided that she should be the one to acquire her family's attention herself in order to increase the odds of them believing that she was really who she was.

Thus, Annie positioned herself on the middle of her brother's football game, illuminating herself as a barely visible vaguely humanoid blur as she used her meager ability to shove around physical matter to disrupt the ball's trajectory. The boys looked justifiably astounded at first, and were quick to follow Annie's barely visible form as she drifted through the house's back door straight into the kitchen.

It took Annie another minute or so to not-so-subtly direct her entire family to the dining room, and as soon as everyone was there, she quickly began forming herself into large glowing letters in the air, slowly spelling out "HELLO MOM, DAD, ALEX, BEN. I'M STILL HERE."

During the several minutes it took to spellthis out, the family's expressions had gradually shifted from barely suppressed depression to a mix of relief, confusion, and disbelief. Eventully, one of the brothers asked "So, Annie, what's the afterlife like?"

This is when Harvey makes his presence known, fading into crisp but translucent visibility as he introduces himself, saying "Hello, I am Professor Harvey Walters, a member of Hawk Ridge's ghost community alongside Annie. As I am currently more skilled at communicating with the living, it was decided that I would be relaying messages for Annie after she re-introduced herself."

The conversation after that proceeds smoothly, with your group agreeing to help teach Annie to communicate with the living, and the Sterling family feeling significantly less depressed than they had that morning. That said, it did raise the awkward question of funeral arrangements; after bit Annie made clear that she wanted her ashes cremated, and that she wanted to put it off until she was fully capable of interacting with people.

Action 1: Chickenstein Research
Successes: 20
Epic Success

None of you are sure what the Chickenstein was running on, but it most definitely wasn't Ectoplasm. The four of you quickly managed to haul the corpse into a secluded alleyway, and with some effort began poking around inside of it to see how it worked. You are rewarded with more questions than answers, the only clue being an opaque pink crystal in what used to be the beast's brain cavity. You try to remove the crystal, only to find that it eats away at Ectoplasm that isn't currently 'charged' for a Manifestation, necessitating significant Ectoplasm expenditure in order to safely handle it.

Given what the thing does to Ectoplasm, it's universally agreed to keep it in a safe place nowhere near any of the group's Haunts. In addition, given the item's properties, it quickly starts being referred to as a Null Crystal. Needless to say, it will be an interesting subject of research, if one that will require significant care in handling.

(Research Topic Unlocked: Null Phenomena)
(Normal XP for everyone, including NPCs)

Action 2: Tangibility Increases
Autosuccess

This week's round of Ectoplasm infusions went well, with several ghosts making massive gains. Even better, Polly has managed to close their wounds entirely, no longer bleeding Ectoplasm once their bandages come off. That said, a couple ghosts feel like they're coming up on some sort of limit, with Redmont and Harvey feeling closest to hitting the end of their ability to grow in power this way.

(Normal Tangibility growth for everyone except @AnimalKrazed, who is no longer Leaking)

Action 3: Crafting Monocles
Successes: 13
Success

Nick Stone meanwhile goes about manufacturing more of his personal pet project in the form of Crafting Monocles, using Refined Ectoplasm to do so. At the end of the week he has half a dozen monocles to show for his efforts, having spent 3 refined Ecto to make them.

(+6 Crafting Monocles)
(Normal XP growth)

Action 4: Monster Hunting
Successes: 12
Success

Meanwhile, Koko and Ragna grab a pair of guns and start patrolling Hawk Ridge, looking for supernatural nasties to grab. They don't find anything until Thursday. The two of them are just passing by the house of a certain necromancer, when suddenly there's a burst of grayish-pink energy that completely destroys the building, slamming into the barricade of Ectoplasm that had previously kept you from entering the property and shattering it into shards.

The pair of ghosts manage to avoid the worst of the shrapnel, and as they look on the wreckage they see a rippling gash in reality colored in that same grayish-pink as the explosion. Several moments of awkward silence pass, before slowly, a form starts drifting out of the rift.

At first, you think it's another ghost, but the sense of wrongness and crackling grayish-pink lightning surrounding the approaching being quickly put the lie to that idea. Koko and Ragna share a quick glance, pull out their weapons, and immediately open fire on the monstrosity.

Sadly, the bullets of Ectoplasm don't seem to harm the approaching entity, bouncing off its jagged crystalline exterior without causing it much harm. The same cannot be said for Ragna when the entity retaliates with a massive blast of energy, blasting her backwards and through several now-destroyed buildings before she can get her momentum under control.

Not waiting for a similar treatment, Koko quickly withdraws a large chunk of Ectoplasm from her personal reserve and gets ready to perform a Manifestation, rapidly compressing the blob of metaphysical material as she throws it at the monstrosity. As the chunk of Ectoplasm leaves her hand, it lights up into eerie blueish-green flames, slamming into the monster's face. Said monster very rapidly ceases to be a threat, as it lights up like a firecracker being tossed in a campfire, leaving a small crater as it rapidly combusts.

The only remnant is a small opaque pinkish-gray crystal, much like the one found in the Chinkenstein's brain cavity. Oh, and the gibbering gash in reality, don't forget that.

Monster added to Bestiary: Null Wraith

Location Added: Null Rift

Both @LinkOnScepter and @Strunkriidiisk get double combat XP

@Strunkriidiisk in Leaking (7)(Bandaged) and lost 5 Ecto in the fight, meaning they finish the turn at 4.1 Ecto.

Action 5: Manifestation Points
Ectoplasm Spent: 50
Successes: 8
Point Yield: 50

Meanwhile, Harvey and Redmont are continuing to improve their mastery of using Ectoplasm to effect the physical world, learning more about its ins and outs than ever before. Admittedly they had to run far more experiments than they did previously, but the massive amounts of Ectoplasm they had to throw around meant they were able to run those experiments without issue.

(normal XP for both Harvey and Redmont, both of them each gain 50 Manifestation Points)

Action 6: Recruit NPC ghosts
Successes: 10
Success

Meanwhile, Giles has the bright idea to try actively recruiting some of the Ghosts in and around Hawk Ridge to join your little community. He soon locates two new members; a newly-deceased woman who simply wishes to be known as Marina, and a man who died of old age a few years back going by Duke.

Marina was a musician in life, with a particular affinity for the saxophone, or at least she claims such. Given how much she geeked out over the spectral handguns, Ectoplasm Harvester, and the Refinery when she first saw them, you suspect that there's a bit more to her than that.

Meanwhile, Duke is quite thoroughly ex-military, having served as an infantryman in Vietnam, fought the Communists in Thailand, took part in the invasion of Grenada, and several other military operations all the way to the Gulf War, after which he was honorably discharged. Turns out that he still had a bit of a blood knight streak in him, and immediately took up hunting and bought himself a motorcycle. He was still going strong, loud, and guns blazing at a ripe old age of 76 when his heart finally gave out on him in his sleep.

(Normal XP gains)
(Will add profiles for Marina and Duke to OP)

Action 7: Build Workshop
Successes: 10
Success

It's also this week when Jonathan finally gets around to finishing that workshop he's been working on for a while, putting the finishing touches on it Friday morning. It should hopefully prove useful.

(Haunt constructed at Clinic: Workshop)
(Normal XP gain)

Event: Rapid Response

The official response to the gaping hole in reality that's formed on the periphery of Hawk Ridge is swift. The Washington State National Guard are quickly called in to establish a defensive perimeter around the rift, with several tanks in the hull-down configuration, machine gun emplacements, and other defenses in place to hopefully ruin the day of anything coming through. They finish up by Friday, just in time for another of those Null Brutes to come through, only to eat a 120mm APFSDS round to the face before it could do anything.

That said, everyone's pretty much panicking as they try to figure out what in the world just happened, and you think that your group might have some useful information for them. The question is, do you want to let them know about you?

Not to offend the more pro-military ones here, but I'd rather not take the risk of becoming a ghost "Justice League" if you know what I mean. Also, sup Duke, Marina, Sean.

I'll wait until Sean's character page is ready to actually vote, but I'm thinking of buffing Tangibility for a bit. Anyone have any other suggestions?

He bounces back from sadness and negative emotions quickly. However, even with his happy to go lucky attitude,he has known to be pragmatic when it is necessary.

He left home when his mother died to escape his father's drug addiction until he eventually found work in Seattle as a chef. Life Story: Koko didn't really have much of a plan when she was alive. She figured she'd go wherever the wind took her. Sadly the cruel reminder that his time on this earth finite would always ruin what enjoyment he could find in life. Due to that, he adopted the path of a loner for he feared what would happen if he grew close to others, only for something to happen and take him from them.
Life Story: Dante at a young age learned one of the world's irrefutable truths. You are born into the world to die. Harvey Walters, character of ConfusedPotato
Name: Harvey Walters
Age at Death: 83 years old
Cause of Death: Old Age, The Mind is Strong but The Flesh is Weak
Self-Image:
Personality: A gruff old man both wise and intelligent, but somewhat abrasive in personality. Always calculating and never fazed by anything that happens around him. His weaker constitution meant that he developed an ability to simply out think everybody around him. Never really forgetting stuff and always adapting his way of thinking he was one of the few old people who transitioned into the digital age without problem, it fact it simply meant that he learned more faster. His death and ghost-hood never bothered him, he fully expected it after studying the work his grandfather, the only reaction he had to being in Hawk Ridge instead of Arkham was a raised eyebrow. In death he still hasn't changed, a quiet old man who speaks his mind to those that ask but always learning as much as he can.
Life Story: A splitting image of his grandfather Harvey took up the family tradition, learning all that he could about the world. Inheriting the family traits of a strong mind and amazing intellect and memory he studied many subjects over the years becoming proficient at many things. With a Ph.D in physics and chemistry he took up a teaching position at the University of the town he grew up in. He married Akachi Onyele a history professor descended from African shamans at 34 and raised a family who would eventually become professors as well. As the years went by he learned more and more, when he finally died with his family around him he had learned a great many more subjects, history, maths, occult lore, biology, computer science, psychology, language, engineering, English and sociology. As the University mourned the loss of one of its greatest minds, his children smiled, for they knew what lay beyond the veil, and they knew how to contact each other if they wanted to.

Polly, character of AnimalKrazed
Name: Polly (Pauline)
Gender: Male
Age: 26yrs
Cause of Death: Suffocation (choked to death on a 'cracker')
Self Image: Brightly coloured macaw, has almost unnoticeable bulge in throat where 'cracker' was. Almost completely transparent, fading in and out like fog in daylight. Being an animal turned sapient ghost ain't easy.
Background: For the first twenty-five years of his life, Polly lived a pretty good life. He had the run of a room converted into a cage by his owner (retired orthinologist), was fed premium feed, and generally was spoiled. With the passing of his owner, he was sold of with the rest of his owner's possessions at auction (owner had no will and no family) and was purchased by a young rich family. Kept in a too small cage he became bitter and sulky before choking to death when the daughter of the family gave him something he shouldn't have had. Has to put much thought into why he's suddenly thinking on human levels, but that's something to think about for another time.
Personality: A quiet, withdrawn bird, okay sorry that couldn't be said with more sarcasm. Polly tends to engage with others on his terms, that is to say often and loudly. Polly is a lot like the parrot, Iago, from Disney's Aladdin with more curse words and a dislike for children. Polly prefers the short form of his name over the feminine name he was gifted by his original owner. Tends to have a drive to ensure negligence such as what occurred to him in his first year doesn't happen if he can help it.
Buttons: The things that tick off Polly to no end are Parrot/Bird stereotype jokes, crackers, children.

Ser Percival Darkridge, character of Lizard Knight
Name: Ser Percival Almond Darkridge the Third (Ser Percival for short, dislikes being called Ser percy)
Age at Death: 42
Cause of Death: Arrow through the mouth, sufficated on his blood.
Self-Image: Knight in medival armour with a tatterd cloak. Face obscured by helmet, eyes are a visible blue.
Personality: Ser Percival described in one word is 'Flamboyant'. Always aching to tell a story or find a good battle. More serious and mature if the situation needs it, but always a little goofy. Loves learning, reading, training and adventure. He understands what modern technology is and excepts it as technology but is still behind on the times.
Life Story: Born in Engeland during the medieval period, Ser Percival always was an odd one. Shuned during his younger years for his talk of monsters and spirits, he grew up in solitude. Spending this time on honing his body, mind and skill he redeemed himself in the eye of his familiy through his skill and sheer willpower.
Although always stayed a bit flamboyant he became a trusted figure in militairy, his ability to quickly adapt to a situation made him a natural on the battlefield. While respected on the field of battle, in the courts he has mainly tolareted. His tales of his 'monster hunts' and 'battles againts ghouls and sorcerors' made him a beloved by the young and hated by the adult. He would often disappear for weeks on end to 'fight the supernatural'.
He died on the battlefield, after giving a speech to rally his man. His warcry was interrupted by a (un)lucky arrow straight into his mouth, throwing him off his horse. His first words on reforming as a ghost were "I knew it!".
Following this he haunted his old manor for a while, before growing bored. When the brittish left for America -the new world- Ser Percival was flushed with excitement and hitched a ride. Here he mostly explored America (and some of Canada) for the following centuries. During the second world war, he was trapped by a Necromancers researching ectoplasm. After a raid on the compound, ser Percival was stuck trapped until a few months prior to the start of the story. Freed by a group of teenage paranormal investigators, he thanked them for freeing him before researching for a place to recuperate. Choosing Hawkridge (because it reminded him of his own name) he stayed silent for a while to regain his strength.

Here, disconnected from the few social links in his hometown, and further disappointed from his average scores, he took up fsynthetising and self-adminstering various drugs.

No @LinkOnScepter I don't know what you mean, but I would prefer not to be shot at because they think that we are the enemy.
[X] Increase Tangibility
-[X] 10
[X] Spend Manifestation Points (free action, resolves before votes counted)
-[X] Spectral Flames 1+2, In the Machine 2, Possession 2+3
[X] Consume Ectoplasm
-[X] Concentrated (Clinic/Cafeteria)
[X] Teach a Manifestation
-[X] Visual Presence, Auditory Presence, and Kinetic Force

"So you all want to learn how to properly manifest. Very well, class is in session, we will begin with a simple explanation of what Ectoplasm is. As we all know, ectoplasm is something we all require to survive and comes from ... "

@ConfusedPotato Done, also I can learn from you right? Is it a free action? Also can I make an write in of 'look for willing adults to posses for hands on research'?
Learning is not a free action but gaining manifestations from points is. Learning voids the point requirement for getting manifestations (note that the prerequisite requirement still exists).
Given what I will be teaching I recommend taking the first levels of Visual Presence, Auditory Presence, and Kinetic Force as it totals 6 points exactly and I can teach you the second and maybe third levels for free.
For write in options turn to @I just write as I am the one who keeps track of stats.

As much as I want to grab Duke and any other violant ghost and enter the null realm guns blazing...they absorb ectoplasm. Also, if the start of the OP is anything to go by, the null plane can mutate ghosts into null wraiths.
As cool as it would be to turn into a ectoplasm absorbing subspecies, it risk going gone/feral.
As, everyone, I call on thy for plan dgoge. (those of you who don't have anything better too do).
Part of me wants a null wraith doggo, but I am not sure if that would work.
Another thing, before we enter the null realm, we need weapons with specteral flame incorperated for those who don't have them or so we don't have to use our ectoplasm directly for a manifestation. It is our HP afteral.
...so as much as I still want specteral dogges, maybe research in to making equipment with specteral flame properties goes first?
Like a specteral flamethrower, or flaming specteral sword.

Vote:

Annie: but what has this to do with dogs
Percival: HOWEVER, I also wanted to discover who to create a creature of undead descent, so we could have specteral k-nine COMPANY.

Ooooh yes! I'm glad this isn't dead, I'll get to making a character right away! Can't wait to get up to some spoopy shenanigans~!

Well almost, you can only spend up to 9 points for increasing tangibility when you do it for the first time as otherwise you suffer critical existence failure as you require 1 point per turn for basic existence.
Also I recommend that you read through all of the mechanics in the opening post as it explains a lot of this stuff. Also the manifestation tree is cool.

Ah,yes I did read it but I was confused by the 'caps at 10' in brackets next to it. Only now I realise its probably for those that have more than 10 electoplasm. Brain fart there.

Showing up to her own funeral, eh?

...

I should have thought of that.

[X] Increase Tangibility
-[X] 10
[X] Consume Electoplasm
-[X] Concentrated (Source- Cemetery)
[X] Research Null Phenomena
-[X] Spend 8 Ectoplasm

We have a big null portal. Maybe this will help us close it?

@Exter I have to inform you that there are significant problems with your backstory. The supernatural's influence on reality prior to the start of the Quest could best be described as almost entirely non-existent, so that insitute for the supernatural you mentioned wouldn't even exist.
