Xero Key Plays: Kingdom Hearts Ux (Union Cross)

Introduction

Xero Key

Flying high, spinning webs!
Hello Sufficient Velocity! So some of you might know me as an avid fan of Kingdom Hearts, spending quite a bit of my time recently on Spacebattles threads dedicated to the franchise and being "General Knower of Things" involving its lore. Well I'm here to show off one of my personal favorites, the Kingdom Hearts MMO: Ux.

'But Xero' you may be asking 'What does that mean? I've never heard of an MMORPG for Kingdom Hearts?' Well fear not my faithful friends, this isn't a fake or a fan-game. Ux started as X (pronounced Key, based on the Greek letter 'chi'), a browser game only for Japan. Eventually it was made into a mobile app known as Unchained X, where the story deviates from the original browser game a little. Later it was updated to Union X [Cross], the current title, and added a multiplayer function.

So now you may be asking, what is Ux? Put simply: The Keyblade War. That mythical event talked about in Birth By Sleep, a War between armies of Keyblade Wielders fighting each other over the power of Light. A War so devastating that the world fractured into a multiverse. ...However I may not get to experience this. See, when Ux deviated from X it seemed to also change the story. Though I will experience much of the prelude to the War itself, certain changes have happened that suggest I will not have the opportunity to actually fight in the Keyblade War despite the Player Character canonically doing so.

As such, I will be roleplaying this as the Player well as giving the hints and tricks I've found most useful. But first, the basics of the game:
========================
UX is a turn-based RPG where you equip Medals to enhance your Keyblade. Each medal represents characters in Kingdom Hearts and have special attacks.

Your first Keyblade, Starlight (seen here at Tier 3) will give you three Medal slots out of five at Tier 1 and most missions allow an extra from another player, bringing your total at the time of this image to six. The Special Meter underneath the Health bar is saying how many special moves I can use. HD Aqua (the first Medal) costs 1 bar, while the Sora & Roxas below cost 0. The top of the screen shows the amount of Items you've collected (shown as Gold and Silver), the Munny, and the Lux. Lux is both your Experience and how the rankings work. More Lux means higher rankings. The Option Tab allows you to look at your bonus objectives and Give Up.

Below that is the Nova Symbol. At a certain point you will be able to combine Medals of the same name to have extra abilities such as bonus Health and hgiher Special attack Damage. Nova levels up as well and is a one shot per Quest Area of Effect attack. Save it for Target Enemies! At the bottom corner you can see a triangle of icons. Red is Power, Blue is Magic, and Green is Speed. They work in a Roshambo (Rock-Paper-Scissors) order; Power beats Speed, Speed beats Magic, Magic beats Power. Certain slots on a Keyblade boost specific types and some Keyblades only work their best with a single type.

This is the Clear screen for the very first Quest, showing which Bonus Objectives you completed (yes, I am level 164. Level cap is 300). The Hidden Mickeys will fill up when you complete them, and some are very difficult.

This is the Quest Select screen. Here you can choose which available mission you want, including replaying old ones for the Bonus Objectives. AP is Action Points, during normal times each quest will cost you a certain amount to play, but at the time of this posting every Quest is currently 0. The 370 there is my Jewels, this is the in game currency you earn just by starting up the game each day or by buying them with actual money. Jewels also can revive you with continues but it costs 100 each time. Proud Mode is harder restrictions on Quests, with the first quest being level 200. Beating them gives you a few good Keyblades... but I'm not there yet. The little film strips indicate which ones have story in them.

Gold Medals have heroes on them and are called Upright, while Purple/Black have villains and are called Reversed. Roxas has one of each and all Organization members are Reversed, including Xion and Lea. Some Keyblades have both Purple and Gold slots, meaning you get an extra boost for putting the proper coloration there.

Now that you understand the gameplay basics, let's get down to story....

Quests 1 through 3
So the first few quests from the story are really simplistic.

Quests 1, 2, and 3 all have your Target enemy as a Shadow.

Target enemies have red around the health bar, slightly higher stats, and can be serious trouble once you start reaching storyline bosses. The Darkside used in the latter portion of the story post is the first Raid Boss. Raid Bosses appear every few quests or so, each specific one leveling up until the system forces a reset. Raids work very simply: Each time a player dies, their cumulative damage is added to the boss. Each Boss has specific parts that you can target to stun them for a certain amount of turns. It's also possible to solo most bosses, even their Omega Versions which are slightly stronger and use Final Mix designs.

Next up, the first few missions of Dwarf Woodlands and the second Keyblade you can get!

Here we go, the first of the grinds you encounter and boy does this game have a steep learning curve! If anything has "Defeat the target in 1 turn" it will not be possible this early in the game and you will come back to it. Add in the "Complete without continue" conditions... well odds are that you are probably going to lose your entire HP bar in a single attack, so that won't be doable. The vast majority of the enemies in this world will be Power type (exceptions are Yellow Operas who are Magic, Tornado Step who are Speed, and Soldiers who are speed), so you will want to have Magic medals equipped. Anything that wants a specific amount of damage in one hit means you will need high level Medals to do that much, Novas obviously don't count.

The Large Bodies fortunately don't require maneuvering like in most games, but they always have high health even as general mooks. You'll probably be lucky and find that some of the Friend Medals are high level ones, which will basically one shot the target at this point. Don't be afraid to just quit and come back if you don't have the Jewels saved up, Freemium games are rarely worth paying for.

So by this point you have finished the first visit to Dwarf Woodlands and your reward is... A Keyblade!

Treasure Trove was first introduced in BBS as a Keyblade for the Wayfinder Trio (Terra, Aqua, and Ventus). Above is the forms you can upgrade it through in the original browser game, Ux changes it so you go from 1 to 3(BBS form) to 5 and then adds a swirling aura as the final upgrade. It is best for Upright Power Medals.

And since you have probably leveled up a few times by now, it's also time to introduce the most contentious part of the game... Avatar Boards.

Avatar Boards give you your look (such as my wings, fluffy neck piece, and Org 13 cloak). But they have another functions.

...Upgrading. As you level up and complete Bonus Objectives you will get Avatar Coins to buy parts of the boards, and that includes your stats. HP increase by 20, AP by 1, Keyblade Cost Capacity. Cost determines how high a level a medal you can equip at one time. Higher lstar Medals can't be stacked on each other easily, you need to have a Cost Capacity high enough or to have Cid Medals that can drop the Cost. I'll get more into that when you have a key ingredient to upgrading.

And, as a bonus: Raid Boss!

Behemoth may in fact be the first boss you face. Attack the Horn first to stun him, then once the Enemy Turn comes ti won't be able to attack. Unfortunately it only has one turn, others have multiple stun targets and therefore multiple turns. Raid bosses will always appear at the farthest part of the Quest Line you have reached, which means that when back tracking you have to scroll all the way back.

Dwarf Woodlands: First Visit

Light. Pain. Why are we fighting!? Stop already! STOP! Bloody rain soaked dirt. Keys like graves. a heart-shaped moon ...A goddess? Turning of pages... forget... I shot up in my bed. "That dream again." I looked over at Chirithy, outside on the rooftops talking to one of his others. "What does it mean?"
