You are a newly-minted Black Mage. What you will do and how you may grow is yet to be seen.
Final Exam 1

After three long years of study and practice, your time has finally come. The Black Magisters are preparing the practical portion of your final assessment in the next chamber, and it'll be sink or swim soon enough. As for the theoretical, you performed

[X]{Academia} flawlessly,
[]{Academia} about as was expected of you,
[]{Academia} well enough to pass,

at least so far as you could tell. They don't bother with the practical at all if you flunk it, after all.

Attending Serpens Academy for the past few years has been fantastic and stressful in equal measure, and you're looking forward to

[]{Interest} reconnecting with your parent
[]{Interest} exercising your hard-won freedom of travel
[X]{Interest} working off your debts rather than adding to them

once you've been licensed to perform your arts beyond its time-worn walls. In particular, your capacity with

[]{Talent} Ice
[]{Talent} Fire
[]{Talent} Miasma
[X]{Talent} Lightning
[]{Talent} Malice

will see you through whatever hardships await.

A bell is rung, breaking you free of your meandering thoughts and calling you into the practice hall reserved for your test. Once this exam is through you will be a Black Mage in truth, and your name will be added to the register of the academy's alumni.

[X]{Name} Blake Hoel Sun

The protagonist is genderless, if that influences your name choice. The {Academia} vote is essentially flavor.

The first three posts after this one will be reserved, then the thread'll be open. The update schedule is liable to be sporadic, but I hope you can take something of value from this thread.

Starter Spell Overview
I made some icons for the spells the talents give you, so here they are along with brief descriptions:

Frost : Moderate accuracy, moderate damage, debuffs.

Flare : Moderate accuracy, high damage.

Infection : Moderate accuracy, damage over time (low to very high over a reasonable duration), progressive debuff.

Bolt : High accuracy, moderate damage.

Bale : Moderate accuracy, very high damage, expensive to cast.

All of them besides Bale have the practical limitations and advantages you'd expect (fire is better against flammable things than flame-retardant things, etc).

You can acquire any of them later, the vote only determines what spell you're currently relying on offensively. Getting others will cost EXP, though.

(The snow effect on the Frost icon isn't really visible, at least on darker backgrounds, but I noticed too late and it'd take a disproportionate amount of effort to fix, so it is what it is.)

Vote Results 1
Scheduled vote count started by TimelessThing on Jan 14, 2023 at 6:56 AM, finished with 15 posts and 8 votes.

Flawless academics, working off your debt and lightning win.

Given that the name option is split between several options with a vote each, some people haven't voted for any, and the front-runner only has two votes for it, there'll be runoff vote between the submissions thus far. If you've already cast your lot for one or more, you don't need to vote again unless you want to change it.

Final Exam 2
Well, I rolled for a tie-breaker and it looks like Blake Hoel Sun wins. Have an update to celebrate.

The room reserved for your assessment is one you're quite familiar with, having refined your spellwork within it over the past year.

Officially, these spaces are only to be used by senior students and magisters. They are essentially giant pots or kettles intended to contain the potential damage resulting from a miscast or experimental spell. Given the commonality of superficial damage, the rooms are only repaired occasionally, as is obvious from this one's state.

A glowing dome rests in the room's center, a weak barrier intended to obscure its contents.

As the door closes behind you the barrier dissipates to reveal several creatures:

a Pewter Wurm which looks like it's seen better days,

an oversized rat whose eyes betray unusual sharpness, and

a Seedspitter.

It seems the magisters are eager to get started.

Pewter Wurms are among the least dangerous of their kind. Their bodies, while tough, are much more vulnerable than their cousins', and they lack the speed needed to chase someone down in an open field. Usually they amount to vermin and rely on their intimidating fangs to ward off threats. This one won't be a threat unless you let it near, and one or two Bolts should be enough to bring it down, especially in its condition.

The rat is likely of the Rattus Connivus species, one known for assaulting sleeping travelers at camp. You can expect it to rely on its nimbleness to evade your spells and position itself out of sight before striking.

While typically immobile ambushers, a Seedspitter's capabilities can vary based on an assortment of factors. It may be venomous, shoot seeds at extreme velocities, or any number of things. It is the only ranged combatant on the opposing side.

On their own, in the wild, none of these creatures would warrant hiring a Lance -- a farmer's pitchfork would easily dispatch one of them. All together, in close quarters, they're somewhat more threatening. Still, it would strike you as strange (and vaguely insulting) if this was the extent of your test.

For now, you'll focus on the

[]{Priority} rat.
[]{Priority} Wurm.
[X]{Priority} Seedspitter.
