This is probably terrible, but it's mostly yet another alt!power Taylor. First fic posting to SB & SV. Wanted to see what writing a story on a forum was like, as opposed to FanFiction.net or other story sites. Will most likely be making a lot of mistakes, as I'm not completely familiar with the interface yet. I write stories using LibreOffice Writer. Hoping that cut and paste won't fubar anything.
Don't own squat, 'cept the plot. Canon? What Canon?
Barnes Residence
Taylor was bouncy as she waited for her stop. Summer Camp was the best thing that happened, and she couldn't wait to tell Ems all about it. Those camp counsellors saw right through her, and brought Taylor out of her shell of grief with kind words and simple listening.
Letting her cry all over them helped too, even if it was embarrassing.
Skipping her way from the bus stop, she didn't even pause when she saw Emma standing with another girl on the front porch. Instead, she took the steps two at a time, and barrelled into her best friend with a glomping hug. "Ems!"
"Who the fuck are you?" the unknown girl asked rather crassly.
Turning her head without letting go of a slightly squirmy redhead, Taylor frowned. "Taylor Hebert. Ems best friend since we were two. And, rude much? The heck are you?"
"Sophia Hess," the black girl said with crossed arms and a frown. "Mind letting her go?" she huffed.
"Ye~es!" Taylor said with a lilting half whine. "I haven't seen her in a month! Sue me for being clingy!"
"Tay," Emma said somewhat quietly, causing her to turn back to her, head somewhat craned back to look at her 'properly'. "Can we-"
Taylor's face hardened when she saw the tears pooling in her best friend's eyes. "What. Happened. Did this Sophia do something to you?"
"No, but-" Emma started.
"Your hair," Taylor said, noting the almost bob-cut. "You liked your long hair. Said you'd never cut it. What. Happened. Ems?"
"Th- the... ABB," Emma stuttered as her left eye leaked.
Finally letting go of the hug, Taylor put both hands on either side of Emma's face. "Ems? Whatdidtheydo? Whathappened? Areyouokay?"
"It – they – I..." Emma was starting to choke out blurting stutters at this point, as her right eye joined in the leaking.
"UNCLE ALAN!" Taylor shouted. "AUNT ZOE! ANNE!"
'Oh, dammit,' Sophia swore in her head. 'This is going to be one of those. Shit. Wiry type; Babbler; Probably fights dirty with hair pulling and shit. Fuck. Well, maybe two backups are better than one. We'll see.'
The front door opened with an inner slam, revealing Alan's worried look. "What's the matter!?" he half bellowed.
"What. Hap-pened. To Em-ma?" Taylor slowly enunciated.
Sighing loudly, Alan deflated. Zoe's worried face peaked out from behind him. "Come inside. This isn't something to talk about on the front porch."
"What," was Taylor's flat, emotionless response to Alan's explanation.
He had gotten lost during an argument between him and Emma over a potential shopping trip to Boston, and ended up in ABB territory by complete accident. His mid-life crisis, a red sporty convertible – very expensive, was a beacon to the gang.
Emma had been dragged out of the car, while Alan had a sawed off shotgun in his face. On the hood of the car, a sadistic bitch cut off half of Emma's hair, and was making her choose which part of her face to cut up.
"Emma kicked the bitch between the legs, and I dropped down from the roof," Sophia said proudly. "Shot them both in the arm. They ran off, and I checked on the survivor here," she said, waving a hand towards Emma on the couch.
Standing from Emma's side on the couch, Taylor turned in an almost mechanical slow motion to face Sophia. "If you saw that, how long were you up there? Did you watch the ambush?"
"How else did I get there on time?" Sophia asked, scowling at her.
"So-phi-a," Taylor said quietly, causing Alan, Zoe and Emma to look at her somewhat sharply, as she had just reminded them of Annette when she was pissed off. "What were you waiting for?"
The girl looked at her oddly. "For her to fight back."
"And if she didn't?" Taylor pressed, still quiet. Alan looked worried at this point. Taylor's temper was as bad as her parents, just with a longer fuse; a quiet 'Annette' simmering, before a 'Danny' explosion. God help anyone who hurt Emma.
Huffing, Sophia explained. "There's two kinds of people in the world, Tay-lor," she sneered. "the strong and the weak. The strong survive, while the weak die."
A vision of impossibly large crystalline beings dancing around each other filled Taylor's mind. There was a bolt of fire that struck one of them, and a third one rapidly came in. She felt it looking at her, which was…
ₒₕ my Gₒd ₕoᵣᵣᵢfyᵢng!
Then there were words that were more than just simple words that echoed everywhere, spiking directly into her head with all the subtlety of a frikken Sledgehammer From God.
The Barnes' all saw something rather odd. Taylor fell back a step, swaying and trying to keep her balance, while Sophia fainted outright and fell out of the chair.
Taylor's head then came back down, to glare murderously at the girl on the floor as she stood up straight.
Emma was stunned as small arcs of electricity went up and down Taylor's arms, as her best friend's hair puffed out a bit.
Alan, who had read about things like this since the encounter, bluntly summed everything up. "Well, shit."
"The hell 'appened?" Sophia slurred as she pushed herself up from the floor. Shaking her head, she paused, then looked up at Taylor. "Fuck."
"YOU WERE GOING TO LET HER DIE?!?" Taylor shrieked at the top of her lungs. She paused then, looking frustrated. Blinking, she took off her glasses and glared at them, then at Sophia, before tossing the now useless things to the side.
Standing with her palms outward towards Taylor in a 'wait' posture, Sophia bumped the chair as she took a step back. "It's not like that!"
"HOW MANY?!?" Taylor thundered.
Sophia was confused. "What?"
"HOW MANY DID YOU LET DIE OR GET RAPED BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T FIGHT BACK?!?"
Realization and shock went over Sophia's face. "Shit." Turning, she shifted to shadow as she went for the outer wall.
Arcing bolts of blue-white lightning shot from the fingers of Taylor's right hand, shocking Sophia out of her breaker state with a scream as she impacted the wall.
Faster than anyone could see, Taylor shot across the room and lifted Sophia up by her throat with her left hand. Little jolts of electricity kept Sophia from getting away, as she lifted her up slightly above her head.
She was also levitating off the floor by about a foot, too.
"Taylor, no!" Zoe shouted. "Put her down!"
Taylor was seething, and didn't hear her. "How many, Sophia?" When the girl did nothing except attempt to break her grip with both hands, kicking her rather futilely. Taylor pulled her closer until they were eye to eye. "How. Many?" she growled.
"Wow," Taylor said in a deadpan, "I didn't know you were a black girl, Kaiser. Bit of a hypocrite, don't you think?"
"WHAT – did you – CAll – me?" Sophia coughed out with wide eyes.
"I called you a fucking Nazi," Taylor said flatly as she dropped her to the floor. "They believe in the ultimate Darwinian Philosophy of survival of the fittest, and declared that Aryan's were the epitome of Humanity; the rest were weak and a burden, and deserved to die.
"That's wrong thinking. The strong exist to protect the weak for the betterment of everyone. That's what Heroes do. Villains prey on the weak, and don't give a damn if they die or not; even helping them off the mortal coil on occasion."
Tilting her head, Taylor clapped her hands in a slow, mocking applause. "Congratulations, Sophia Hess. You're a Nazi Villain. Be Proud."
Shrieking incoherently, Sophia jumped at her while changing to shadow again. She was hit with a larger blast of electricity from both hands, and was knocked unconscious.
"Uncle Alan, please call the PRT," Taylor said. "We have a psychopathic cape in the house. I don't know what her deal is, but I don't want her near any of you."
There was a pause as nothing was said, and she turned her head back to them in confusion. "What's the matter?"
"Tay?" Emma got her attention. "You're floating."
Looking at her feet, Taylor reflected on what just happened, blinking rapidly. "Huh," she whispered. "Call Dad too. He's going to be pissed when he finds out about this."
"I don't think he will," Zoe said. "Worried? Sure. Mad? I really don't think so."
Pulling her hands together at her chest, Taylor fretted with her fingers, eyes darting about as she slowly turned in the air. Eventually, she lowered herself to the floor and sat next to Emma, enveloping her with a hug on the couch. "I'm so sorry that happened to you."
Getting nothing but sniffles, she went on. "Hate the way it happened, but your hair does look cute now. You can always grow it back out, ya know."
That was the tipping point for Emma. The one main thing they had in common, was a love of their hair. She wrapped her arms around Taylor and simply cried.
While the girls comforted each other, Alan pulled out his cell phone to call the PRT, and motioned for his wife to call Danny on their home phone. "What a day," he muttered.
The PRT arrived shortly after Danny did. Taylor had to 'zot' Sophia once more before they arrived, though. Quick explanations from Alan had Sophia cuffed with special cuffs, which would electrify if Sophia used her breaker state. Seemed that electricity was a pretty common security measure for parahumans with a misty type of breaker state, like Night and Fog. Who knew?
Danny wasn't thrilled at all with what happened, but Miss Militia's presence prevented him from blowing his stack.
Alan ran his hands through his red hair. "And that's when Taylor stumbled back a bit. Sophia fainted out of the chair at the same time, too. Then-"
"Wait," Miss Militia said, as she looked over at Taylor. "What was going through your mind at the time?"
"Shock; Outrage; Insane Protectiveness; Murderous Intent; Three large swirls of multicoloured crystals," Taylor shrugged, somewhat sulky. "I wanted to hurt her for nearly letting my sister in everything except blood die like that."
That got a tighter squeeze from Emma. Taylor let her head fall sideways to rest on the top of hers, as she closed her eyes. "Emma's been my rock since Mom died. I wasn't about to let something like that alone."
"I understand," Miss Militia said with a nod, taking mental note. 'Remembers the vision of the trigger.'
Emma had been quiet the entire time, but then whispered, "Sith."
"Huh?" Taylor asked rather eloquently.
"Your cape name," Emma explained.
Miss Militia smirked at Taylor's completely horrified expression. "I am NOT calling myself Sith!"
"Why not?" Emma said with a grin, as she leaned away from her friend. "You got that whole 'Dark Lady' thing with the lightning," she said with her hands up, fingers splayed, and tongue poking out.
Taylor narrowed her eyes. "I can always frizz your hair, you know. With the amount of hairspray you use, it'll stick that way."
Squeaking in feigned fear, Emma shot up from the couch. "Oh no you don't!" she yelled and dashed out of the room. The bathroom door could be heard slamming in the distance.
"She could've just said she needed to go to the bathroom," Taylor groused.
Miss Militia snorted. "You know, if you join the Wards, Vista will simply adore you."
"Why's that?"
Eyes crinkling with a smile, she explained. "She's been outnumbered by boys for over a year."
Wincing at that, Taylor paused in thought. "You know, Emma missed the cut-off for Arcadia by two points. If I come in, you think they could keep us together?"
"You qualified?" Miss Militia asked with an arched brow.
"Top of the class," Danny said proudly, making his daughter blush.
He looked hopeful when Miss Militia nodded. "I'll see what we can do. No promises, but I know a few people."
"I really don't want either of them to go to Winslow," Zoe commented. Danny and Alan nodded their agreement.
"Long as we stick together, I don't care," Taylor said with conviction. "But yeah. Staying out of gang central would be nice."
Miss militia has a perfect memory, thus no need of weak handwritten notes.
I guess you're leaning towards WardsTaylor, which is fine. You need a bit of resistance to sell it though, no one goes 'join your supernatural law enforcement agency, fight for my life? Sure!'
Alexandria's power time locked her body, thus stopping her aging. Will Taylor be tiny-taylor forever? It would certainly be a twist.
I like your formatting, very well done. Might want to tone it down, otherwise you'll have to be putting extra effort every chapter. And how long until that extra effort becomes too much effort...
Basically, Taylor has a Magneto package, the strength coming from tactile TK. Since it's an Abbadon shard, her trigger event wasn't Imped. (and she's likely immune to being Imped from other nearby triggers) It's a live, active shard so it won't have power expenditure issues like Cauldron vials (being Abbadon's only shard in active use helps on that too).
The fact Taylor remembers her trigger event differently from MM may raise some eyebrows, but it's the result of two isolated events. Cauldron will likely chalk it up as 'unusual but probably irrelevant to our plans.'
It's a different shard. Alexandria's shard works by preventing things from affecting her, that's why Eidolon couldn't heal her eye after the Siberian tore it out.

It's Queen Administrator from another, stronger Entity. QA is way bigger than any non-critical shards Abbadon had available, so any merger would have the Electric! shard subsumed into QA, which defeats the purpose. The only option was a forced eviction from Taylor's brain before it had a chance to connect.
That means QA has likely latched onto Emma and is looking for a better host, or waiting for a chance to trigger...
So far, it's believable. Everyone seems to be in character for this part of Worm from what I can tell. Taylor hasn't gone through 1.5 years of bullying and still has a decent amount of faith left in "the establishment" (due to no Winslow) to make choosing to join the Wards believable. Something tells me this isn't the last we've seen of Sophia though, unless she (and her family) are shipped out of Brockton Bay.
With Taylor having powers this early (age 13 instead of 15), plus her being close to Emma, means that a bud of Taylor's Abaddon-based shard is more likely to connect to Emma than anyone else (unlike, say, a random boy who gets control of birds).
It is very nice to see a story starting way back here. Your writing is good, looking forward to see where you take this. So watched. Very much like the idea that Taylor and Emma might go to Arcadia, not seen that before.
Just so I don't get my expectations too high about updates, don't suppose you can give any sort of indication for the speed you write?
