Disclaimer: I don't own Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Ranma 1/2. If I did, I'd be rich. I make no money on this work of fiction, nor do I intend to try making any money using it. This is just for fun.
Foreword: This is a story I'm opening up to anyone interested in taking part. At the end I've listed the few rules set up for it. I ask that anyone who does add a chapter, please remember to take into account what others have previously written. While I'm starting off with Ranma as the central character, feel free to add others too. This is a story based on a full immersion virtual reality MMO system gone wrong after all. I will point out that this is taking place fairly early in the Manga. This means that while he's learned the Chestnut Fist, he hasn't learned any ranged ki attacks or the tornado move.
Worlds of Adventure

Faerie Knight (and others?)
Enter a world of adventure with the revolutionary World Diver virtual reality system! Adventure Incorporated is proud to present the next level of video game. There's no need for a Television, no need for a controller. With World Diver you can experience games like never before. You aren't just watching a character you control on screen. You are the character. Your actions matter, your decisions are important. Will you be a noble knight errant? Or a vile necromancer bent on enslaving the land? Are you a champion of justice, or a petty thief? It's all up to you.
-Advertisement for World Diver
To be honest, I'm not sure how to rate this console. It's like nothing I've ever seen before, and that's not really a bad thing. But it's not a good thing either. To start with, there's the World Diver it's self. The machine can easily take up a room the size of a study. This is because the system is built around a lounger style chair. This chair is comfortable, which is good because you will be sitting in it for a long time when using the World Diver. Unlike other VR headsets in development, World Diver is a full immersion system. This means that from the moment you start up the system to the moment you sign out and power down, you are completely unaware of your surroundings.
This is something I find a little concerning. And according to the safety Manuel that comes with a World Diver you never want to shut off the system when someone is playing a game. Nor do you want to pull someone out without having them exit the game and shut down themselves. Either of these actions can apparently lead to the player falling into a coma. Again, I find this to be concerning. Fortunately the system does have an emergency internal power generator that kicks in if there's a blackout. For this reason I would have to recommend always having someone on hand when using the World Diver system.
Access to the games themselves is subscription based. Along with access to the games library, a World Diver subscription also includes the services of on-call visiting nurses. The reason for this is because the system is intended to be used for up to three days at a time. This means that when hooked up to the World Diver for long duration play you're receiving a nutrient drip, and are hooked up to bio-waste gathering devices. When you start a session one of the first things you do is select how long you're going to be playing. Any session scheduled for longer then eight hours automatically alerts your assigned medical professional. The system will also alert your medical professional if any session lasts six hours, regardless of how long you intended the session to be. I can attest that this is a good thing. It is easy to lose track of time.
Regarding the game library, there are only three titles at the moment, although word is that others are in the works. The first is World of Westerns, an open world game set in a stereotypical wild west setting. Next is World of Fantasy, an open world game set in a quasi-European fantasy setting. If you have ever played Dungeons and Dragons or read a fantasy novel, you'll know what to expect. And finally there is World of Heroes. This one is my personal favorite. World of Heroes is again, an open world game. This time it is centered around the city of Freedom, and is a super hero game. Within it you can chose to be a hero or villain. Or even just use your powers for everyday life. I met one player who had chosen winged flight who worked as a pizza delivery girl in Word of Heroes. Developer Adventure Inc has hinted that a fourth game centered around supernatural horror is planned to be released by December.
Character customization is robust, yet simple. An avatar named Madam Dusk guides you through the process, explaining everything as you go. You can chose to be older or younger then you really are, or even the opposite gender. Which I can attest feels rather odd. Speaking of which, the graphics in-game are top notch. In fact it's easy to forget you are playing a game. Everything looks and feels real, and I'm wondering how that works. It's recommended to set up an in-game alarm with Madam Dusk to remind you when you wanted to sign out. Otherwise, as I mentioned it is very easy to forget.
Controls are extremely intuitive. In fact, there is no HUD. You gauge how injured your avatar is based on how you feel. Being stabbed in the kidney hurts, which provides incentive to become more skilled so you can avoid such an event in the future. While you have a character sheet, and attributes such as Health, this again is not reflected in a HUD. You have to specifically open your character sheet to get this information. And the lower your health score gets, the more impaired your avatar becomes.
In the end, I am torn on how to rate the World Diver. The initial game library is small, but the games that exist are very good. Graphics and sound, I have to give the World Diver a 10/10. Controls are a solid 6/10. While the controls are intuitive and well done, the tutorial to teach you those controls can potentially take days before you complete it. Overall, I give the World Diver a 7 out of 10. This is an intriguing system, and well worth the sizable investment. But it's not without it's risks or drawbacks.
-Game Star Magazine review
"Sir, project Diver can't be released to the public. There are alarming anomalies in the code that pose a danger to anyone who uses the system. And we've been unable to isolate those anomalies."
-Unknown scientist working for Adventure Inc.
When he rescued a businessman the teenage boy had no expectation of receiving any reward. That wasn't the reason Ranma Saotome had acted. In truth it was lucky that Ranma had even seen the abduction during his unwilling flight through the air. But having seen the act, his honor had demanded that the youth rescue whoever the man was from the armed thugs. In the months that followed he hadn't thought much about it. The entire event was just one more in a string of rescues and protective acts which those who knew Ranma best would never have believed him capable of.
So when a truck from Adventure Incorporated showed up asking for the Saotome youth it came as a surprise. Even more shocking had been when they installed a machine Ranma recognized as the World Diver. His fellow students had been drooling over the newest gaming system on the market. And he'd seen advertisements on occasion for it. But he thought the system wasn't suppose to be available for another month? At least, that was what the local arcade owner had mentioned. The Golden Crown Arcade had six on order after all.
While the installation people did their work, Ranma started reading through the instructions. Unlike his father, he liked to know what the dangers were before undertaking something risky. Not that this was always possible. For the most part everything looked simple enough. According to the booklet all he had to do was lay down in the chair, pull the helmet down over his head, and say the words Power On. It even mentioned a voice identification security feature. And according to the cover letter, that feature had been programmed by default to only recognize Ranma himself. He would have to add any additional users to the authorized list.
Since school was finished for the summer, Ranma decided now was as good of a time as any to try the world diver out. So thinking, he laid down and pulled on the helmet. Once the activation phrase had been stated his vision changed from the suffocating darkness of the helmet to a massive off white room. Before him were four brown doors. Each one had a name engraved on the door. These names were World of Fantasy, World of Western, World of Heroes, and World of Horror. This, he guessed, was the menu for selecting which World of Adventure game he wanted to play.
I thought there were only three games? The martial artist thought. With a shrug of his shoulders, Ranma decided to check out the unknown forth game first. Stepping through the door, Ranma found himself standing in a dressing room. Before him was a dusky skinned woman in a black evening gown. Her hair was long and black, and her eyes glowed an ominous shade of red. This woman's nails were long and looked sharp. And her lips were blood red.
"Greetings," the woman said. "I am Mistress Dusk and I am here to ready you for terror like you never imagined. To start with, are you a man or a woman? Keep in mind that while you aren't limited to your 'real world' gender, this choice is permanent and will affect all future time spent in the World of Horror."
He was about to exclaim how he was a guy. But then Ranma stopped and thought. Every cure falls through or is fake. And the guide said curses mix. I gotta get use to the curse, and who would know?
"I'm a..."
Author Notes:
Yes, this is in fact a Buffy the Vampire Slayer cross. "World of Horror" is the Buffy setting. Yes, that would mean that the entire BTVS setting is a video game. Or does it? Clearly I've set up that something unusual is happening considering the warning being quoted and Ranma having access to a game that isn't released yet. Since I'm opening this up for other authors to contribute as well, here's the basic premises for the setting.
Once a gender is picked for a given game, that choice is permanent.
Signing out of a game can only be done in the exact location you first appeared at within the game after leaving the tutorial, but this isn't immediately obvious.
Players don't insert themselves directly into the role of a cast member. That said, there is no Buffy Summers either unless someone is playing a character named Buffy Summers who chose to be "gifted". Willow, Xander, and the other Scooby Gang members however can be npcs (non-player characters). As can Angel.
After a week spent within a game any changes made within a given game such as gender selected, powers gained, becoming a supernatural entity, or learning magic do in fact transfer back to the real world when you log out. This only applies to one game world at a time. So if you were playing World of Heroes, you'd log out and still have your superpowers from within the game. But if you entered World of Westerns you would lose those powers, instead gaining skills and abilities identical to your World of Westerns character.
Dusk, the game's avatar goes by a different title in each world. Mistress Dusk for World of Horror, Madam Dusk for World of Heroes, and Lady Dusk for both World of Fantasy and World of Westerns. Her outfit is suitable for each game genre and title.
- Beyond the world setting of Ranma 1/2, this is also a world with superheroes and villains. While Japan doesn't have many of either (mostly superhuman martial artists, magical girls, and magic users) they are somewhat common throughout the rest of the world. The largest populations are in America and Europe, nobody knows why. Note, just because it's a world with super heroes does NOT mean it's the Marvel, DC, or Worm settings. This story is set in my own superhero setting which I call "The Freedom Society". This is because the setting originates with a longstanding superhero rpg campaign I was part of that centered around a team called The Freedom Society. Meta-Humans have existed since the late 40's. In fact the first known meta-human first appeared in 1948, although there's urban legends suggesting they were around as far back as 1929.
- The World Diver system has no means of detecting internal energies. Nor is it programmed to translate anything like ki usage by the player into the virtual world. That means that while any hard earned skills can be used things like ki enhanced speed, strength, and durability are unavailable in-game. Nor can it tell if the player actually has any super powers. Thus any personal super powers are unavailable.
