Worldbuilding the Quest 2a, The Outland

[X][PEST] They're a good source of meat. We'll fence off our food stores from them so they can't get to those, but otherwise let them run around eating our garbage and scavenging from the forest. See what kind of nesting sites they prefer and make sure to get them used to living in those.

I like both names, but I liked the first name so much I used half of it for my own family, so... feels a bit arrogant for me to call it that. I won't complain if other people vote for it though. :V

-One of the most dangerous, yet profitable means of gaining food. See if we can find ways to pass on experience to the next generation sooner so that they may be prepared in case their elders should fall.

[Personal] [1 Manpower] [X] Hunting
-Food is plenty, and with shelter now safer than ever it is time to grow the size of the family. See if the family can gain extra food for hunting, but be cautious and make sure to only go after prey known to be able to take down.

I'm reasonably confident that the reason I advanced Skilled Hunting so much has to do with me also doing hunting on my own, creating some sort of synergy. Or maybe I'm talking out my ass and there were background rolls that just did well for me. Either way, I think I'll repeat my actions from last turn.

On another note, I have an... idea, on how to overcome the limit for manpower based on our settlement size once we reach it. It's a bit complex, and based on our growth rate and easy access to food, I'm not sure if it is relevant anytime soon. If people are interested, I can try explaining it and hopefully not horribly confuse people. Otherwise I'm confidant I can cover most of it on my own, beads would be the only thing that would make it somewhat difficult on my end, and maybe food preservation.

I can't decide if I want Ixoxixinxco to be the village name or my family name.

Whoops, edited. I had assumed that family size impacted manpower, but actually reading the rules says that's not so.

  1. Inunx: Home, Safety, Sanctuary; The home is one of the most important places for a pixie family and represents a place that is safe for pixies in particular.
  2. Veu: Stone, Crafting, Tools, The ability to break or change other thing; Veu is what is ideally used when you wish to shape or change the world, the prominent part of most tools. It is what you use to break things against to inflict change upon them.
  3. Puen: Sky, Death by Sky Predator, Treeless; The realm of the great predators, Puen is a state of being that is a separate part of the world where pixies dare not tread.
  4. Inpu: Courage, Achievement; Inpu deals with success in the face of adversity. While generally a compliment, it is also seen as very deadly in its possibilities.
  5. Uxco: Fear, Protection by one's own strength, Humility; Uxco is not a word of negative connotation, rather it speaks of the ability to acknowledge one's limitations and surpass them because of how dangerous those limitations are.
  6. Unnox: Birth, New Start, Stubbornness; Unnox is a good luck term for birth, saying that the newborn will likely survive the dangers of the world while growing up.
  7. Onnve: Water, Underneath; Onnvu represents the 'Underworld' in Pixxie culture. Deep under the ground is where all water eventually gathers, and where Pixie's souls rest.
  8. Sunx: Snake, Death by Snake; One of the most common predators of the Pixies, Sunx are greatly feared.
  9. Guppu: Very Large Bug, Death by Bug; Rare, but none the less deadly. Considered the biggest prey a Pixie is able to take down without traps.
  10. Inpuve: Death by age, Greatness, Largest Achievement; Death by age is not very common amongst Pixies, but considered to be a great accomplishment and deserving of rest.
More words! Not sure how many I'll end up making total, it's already getting kind of hard.

So, as a hunting family, in this coming turn would people prefer I worked on-
  • Creating Atlatls, a likely low hanging fruit that would make hunting easier.
  • Studying birds, a likely long term project that can be folded into hunting. Not my preferred action, but not the worst one.
  • Dealing with the lizards, possibly building a pen or some such. Probably the least relevant to my specialization, but something that needs to be soon enough that I'm willing to commit manpower.
Also, a suggestion for the people going down the crafting route after you find a source of stones. Basketry and/or maybe a building to store stones in may help in the long run so we can carry more stones and store them so fewer trips have to be made.

Atlatls would be sweet but we also need to start bagging larger game so birds/mid sized mammal study would make sense. I might go basketry next round. It can make us better housing/storage/even primitive armor.

The settlement has a new name.

Pest
[X][PEST] They're a good source of meat. We'll fence off our food stores from them so they can't get to those, but otherwise let them run around eating our garbage and scavenging from the forest. See what kind of nesting sites they prefer and make sure to get them used to living in those.
The practice of regularly cleaning out the dens, and being extra careful to keep any spare food where the lizards can't get to seems to be working. The appearances of the lizards in the dens is much less common, though they are still found around the settlement. They have become one of the few staples the Pixies consume regularly. Still, there is still the occasional infestation of a den when a pixie becomes lazy and fails to clean properly.
The lizards seem to prefer nesting in dark, dry places.

Project: Skilled Crafting (2 manpower=3 effort) (40%?)
Efforts continue to improve the settlements crafting ability, and formalizing of the passing down that training to the next generation. Progress has been incremental, with no major advancements

[Project] Find Stone (complete)
Veekie [Personal] Digging tools.
The quest for stone was not an easy one. The pixies went out time and time again to find a source of stone, often for days at a time. They flew for dozens of Kilometers in every direction, occasionally stumbling on small amounts of stone to bring back to the settlement. Yet no significant source could be found. Until one brave pixie from the Oxxuco family decided to brave the deadly river, and fly across it. Despite nearly getting eaten by something leaping from the rive, he made it safely to the other side, and promptly began looking for a source of stone.
It took him less then an hour to find one. A large crumbling bolder very near edge of the river, concealed only by a handful of trees from being seen from the other side. The fragments from the bolder would be more then enough to supply the settlement for a hundred generations at current levels of consumption, the only problem was returning them to the settlement. Crossing the river was extremely risky, not only from whatever lurked below the water, but the lack of canopy meant there was a large risk of airborne predators attacking them in flight. Combined with the limited amount of stone the pixies could carry in one crossing, it was only a matter of time before tragedy struck. Hundreds of trips were made across the river to retrieve the stone fragments. Uhere were dozens of close calls, but no deaths until..
*snap*
A member of the Veekie family vanished into the water, trapped in the jaws of an unknown creature. The trips to retrieve stone fragments stopped, as no pixie was brave enough to risk another crossing. perhaps in another generation, one brave enough would arise.
yet three generations worth of stone had been retrieved, largely in thanks to the crude digging tools and hammers the same veekie family had contributed to the effort. with would be many years before another attempt to retrieve stone from the site would need to be made.
(+2 generations worth of stone gathered. Veekie family has temporarily lost 1 manpower. 1 additional generations worth of stone gathered duE to the digging tools the Veekie family contributed.
(New project: Retrieve stone, A high risk project, that carries a large risk of death(and loss of manpower) for those undertaking it, but one vital for the prosperity of the village. Each manpower-effort will secure enough stone for one generation of pixies use. )
(Find stone task can be undertaken again to find another source of stone, one that might be safer to get to.

Xutoen- [Personal] Endurance Training
The Xutoen family had started training their ability to fly, focusing on staying in the air longer. while there has been noticeable progress, not only in endurance but in speed and maneuverability, it's nothing spectacular, but they are by far the best fliers in the settlement.

confu-[Personal] Basic Bookkeeping
-Keeping in line with the sayings we should know how much of what we have so as to know how prepared we are. Keep a tally of our food and equipment stockpiles and try to keep them at a surplus if possible. Always remember to have extra stored to act as a buffer for when bad times come.
The idea of tallying up the settlements food stores was fairly simple. Making simple marks on a small piece of wood, each representing a item of food that the family had in their stores, and of basic supplies that the village shared. Yet in practice.. It fell apart. While keeping a tally of the non-perishable supplies and tools proved quite easy, tallying the food proved elusive. Families were for the most part secretive on how much food they had kept stored, refusing to let the confu family tally them up most of the time. And even when they did, the tallies were usually obsolete within a month, the food consumed or disposed of for going bad. The communal food supply was even harder, with food items cycling through it within a week of them being added.
Yet what tallies were taken concerning the food supply, private and public did indicate a surprising trend. the average amount of food stored was shrinking..

[Project] Skilled Hunting (complete)
Ixoxixpu-[Personal] Hunting
trek [Personal]-Gathering

-The forest is full of food if you know where to look. Fruits and nuts will feed us. We will learn and remember the best places to get them and the best paths to them, without the need to fight.
bluefur87-
Initially, the hunting was good this generation formalized training for hunting was established, lead by the Ixoxixpu family. Gathering effort by the Trek family were fruitful. Yet at they yearly storms passed again and again, things started to change.
First was a measure of bad luck. A large ground predator manage to ambush a hunting party led by the head of the Ixoxixpu. Only by his brave efforts to lure the predator away was the majority of the party able to flee back to the safety of the settlements dens. He never returned to the settlement himself. (-1 manpower for the Ixoxixpu)
As the years continued, the smaller gam became rare to find in the immediate area around the settlement. What was left often ignored the traps set by the pixies, though still proved the best source of food for the pixies. Foraging efforts found some of the most favorable spots being overgrazed by large herbivores, ruining them for the pixies. Hunting and gathering parties were forced to range farther and farther from the safety of the settlements dens, often requiring them to spend days away form the settlement. Worse, large predators were attracted to the area in larger numbers by the increasing number of large herbivores, only kept away from the settlement by the poisonous traps protecting it. Travel outside the settlement had to be approached by extreme caution to avoid them, especially after the Ixoxixpu heads death.
Overall, with the number of mouths to feed in the settlement, and the decrease in the amount of food being brought in each week, the food stores were slowly shrinking. It would be a generation before it truly threatened to become a famine, but on the current course the settlement was taking, it was unavoidable.
(A famine will occur at the end of the next generation, assuming no measures are taken to avoid it. Settlement prosperity returns to normal)
What steps will the Settlement take concerning the impending Famine.
[FANIME[] write-in

Oxxuco-[Personal] Better Traps
One of the major factors keeping the settlement from already experiencing a famine are the Oxxuco Family's traps. Slightly more sturdily built, and often baited by the small scavenging lizards from around the settlement, they have proven quite successful, targeting small predators that have not yet learned to be wary of the pixies and their works. While only slightly greater then the hauls the other hunters are bringing it, it is much more consistent, and they have not been stingy in sharing their surplus with the rest of the settlement making them popular with everyone.

Third turn idle, will be shifted to NPC family at end of turn.
Yhea, a sequence of bad rolls. with the large increase in population this turn, 3 single digit roll on actions connected to the food supply, and a roll of 1 on the event roll... Pixies basically over hunted the local area. small animals they hunted learned to avoid pixies and the settlement, and larger herbivores that the pixies could not easily hunt took up the nitch, attracting the larger predators with them. worse, other then the yearly storm, there is nothing preventing the pixies from hunting and gathering year round. A month of food stored is/was considered a large surplus. Food was/is a thing of the moment for the pixies.

also, no excuse for takeing so long on posting this. I have had this update done for 3 weeks, and it was just sitting on my computer. I'm really embarrassed I forgot to post this.

[X] [Family Name] Ixoxixinxco - Braided/strong tree(s) of preparation and wisdom
[X] [Famine] As much as everyone hates rationing we will have to institute it, along with limits to how much of something we can hunt as we must allow for animal populations to reproduce. We should also begin keeping actual populations of the lizards in pens so that we can have something to eat it hunting and gathering fails.
[X] [Communal] [1 Manpower] Skilled Gathering (50%)
[X] [Personal] [1 Manpower] Improved food storage techniques (drying, pickling, cooling, sugaring etc.)
-While basic bookkeeping of the other families is not working we are still able to do it with our own, as the recent food shortage has shown much food is lost due to spoilage, food stored in cool dry places seems to spoil slower than that stored elsewhere. Some containers store food better than other as well. If we were able to preserve food better we would be able to have more stores for when times are lean. We should ideally have enough food stored to last the whole length of the yearly storm period in the event that it runs long.

I'll focus on making tools to make work less manpower intensive then.
If we breakthrough we may be able to hunt larger game.

Yay, only one manpower.

I suspect that something is up, because we shouldn't be able to out hunt our local area this easily with such a small population... I mean there should be plenty of bugs if nothing else.

Edit: Changing vote to Stone Blades in order to attempt to create solidarity. Two people working on skilled gathering should be enough to finish it.

Around 8 times more pixies are living off the land now used then before the settlement was founded. And their gathering of food has not changed much, except they are quite a bit better at hunting.

edit: not to say there are other factors,

Hmm, on second thought, hunting tactics might not be the best thing. I think I'll take this opportunity to try and get the nest research out of the way. Editing vote now...

Maybe we should setup hidden outposts farther afield from our village. Could make the long range hunting/gathering trips more tenable.

I'm going at it at a manpower efficiency angle. It takes too many pixies to hunt and process food. So stone blades would let us get more done with less.

Perhaps we can use this to start agriculture? If we have to go far to find food, then we should encourage food to grow near us.

Does a family interested in hunting want to synergize with my personal action?

The Trek family has prided themselves on ensuring a stable food supply from the bounty of the forest. It seems their efforts have not been good enough, and they must redouble their efforts, and share their expertise with the rest of their tribe.

While the delays in updating have been all my fault due to laziness on my part, attending my sisters wedding, and the holidays.. I have been trying to get it done. up till around 6 hours ago when I got back in town after visiting relatives for x-mas.
My computer died while I was gone. something went wrong with it's harddrive, and it's now completely unreadable.
so.. new computer bought on the day after x-mas. joy for me.
anyway, I lost pretty much everything on the game. the maps are online, along with a few other documents and what is in the thread, but I have to build everything up from scratch. joy. I'm just going to fo a final conclusion update and start from scratch with a third game. *sigh*
