Mission 1: Defend Jagel
23 June 1989
North Germany

When the War began, I was in Hamburg and didn't expect anything, like anybody else. Then the Russians stormed West Berlin, and suddenly it was the third World War. I reported myself in and was given command of the 3rd Reserve Kompanie, a unit mashed up from draftees that couldn't get to their units in time and reservists who faced the same fate. We only had light equipment and were on the way to the front before we knew anything. I didn't even had any orders besides a short "get to Kiel and help defend the Channel entry!" from my superiors.

Rumor had it that the Russians were standing right before the city. The defense was made up of anything the Bundeswehr could scrap together and a few Danish units that had been rushed south to help. The only reason the city hadn't fallen was that the offensive into the North was only to cover the main thrust towards France. Lucky for us. But it didn't make anything easier for us.

My Company and I were put onto lorries, not even military once, and rushed east to help. We already were in Rendsburg and had a short break to eat when reports came in from the Air Field Schleswig. Paratroopers or Air Mobile Infantry were attacking the airfield. Losing it would mean losing the air support for the whole northern front. So, the high-command sends anything there that could be.

Including us.

Rules & Unit Overview
Rules

Dice
A number of d10 is rolled for both sides, the one with more success wins. 10 = 2 Success; 6+ = 1 Success. A Unit has at least 2d10 for any test. Extra d10 are given for the Experience of the Unit and Traits.

Experience
A unit or officer has an Experience Level that dictates how good they are at their job.
Recruit/Draftees/Reservist = +0 Dice
Regulars = +2 Dice
Elite = +3 Dice
Legends = +4 Dice

Officers
Officers make a test before units engage to see how good they have positioned their men and lead them. Any Success they roll adds an additional die to the pool of its unit.

Traits
Traits give a unit a special bonus in certain situations. A trait can be anything from specialized training to weapons or a perfect position. They can be temporary or permanent.

Victory Points
VP's are given for successful defeating enemy units or reaching the mission target. They get counted together after a mission and can be used to buy new units, equipment, or traits. In Mission's, they can be used to call in Battlefield-Support. Any VP used to call in Battlefield-Support is lost permanently.

Battlefield-Support
This can be anything, from an air-strike to extra ammunition or reinforcement. They have their own dice pool, different to units they sometimes come with a precast success. The officer makes a test to see how good he was at calling in the Battlefield-Support. Any BS called in lowers the Victory Points counter.

Please use the [x]Plan Name format

Mission Brief:

  1. Defend Airfield Schleswig from the attacking force (10 VP)
  2. Stop the formation of a bridgehead behind our lines (10 VP)
  3. Join Battle Group Reicher (5 VP)

Battle Group Reicher has been formed under the command of the base commander. At the moment, he has only the Airfield Defence under his command. Your company, as well as Danish units, will bolster his force. Don't expect heavy reinforcements, Battlefield Support is basically nonexistent as everything is needed at the frontline and Kiel.

Victory Points at the moment: 5 VP

Battle Group Reicher

The lorry came to a stop near the police car. You jumped out of the cabin onto the asphalt as you grabbed your G3 and walked over to the oldest of the four police officers standing near the car. The younger ones looked a bit scared and were clutching their MP3's as if they were the only thing that kept them alive. The older one rested his arm on his own automatic weapon in a way you still knew from the officers who had served in the Second World War. He also seemed a bit more relaxed than the other three.

"Hauptmann, good to see you and your men." The greeting was honest. "I'm Polizeiobermeister Joachim Schlüter, my boss sent me to stop any civilians from getting caught in the fighting at Jagel."

"That's good to hear. I'm Hauptmann Karrenbauer." You looked past him down the dark road and listened to the sound of war coming from the airfield that was apparently only a few kilometers away. The last reports you had gotten weren't promising at all. The defenders were hard-pressed by the enemies who had attacked suddenly, but at least the airfield was still in friendly hands. "Anything else I need to know?"

"Actually, yes. A local hunter has done some recon for us, but I think it will be of much more use to you." Schlüter opened his patrol car and grabbed a map which he put on the hood of his car and started pointing out to locations just north of your position. "Here on the street, maybe two bends down from here in a small group of trees, around two platoons have set up shop. They have anti-tank weapons with them, I think they were sent to block the street and stop any reinforcements from getting to the airfield. Two or three kilometers."

"How sure are you about the AT weapons?"

"Not that sure, but it would make sense, even a small force with a few rockets could stop any column coming down the street," Schlüter answers. "The hunter didn't get close enough to actually take a look at what they got, but he described it well enough. Sounded like heavy weapons, they are prepared to face tanks."

"Are they Russians or Ossi's?"

Schlüter shrugged and stared into the distance for a moment before he answered. Then he added with a quiet voice, "I hope Russians." For a moment, you were both silent.

"The second location you pointed out? Here near the airfield?" you asked and looked up to orientate yourself. In the distance you could see a small forest. "The forest over there?"

"Yes, a company. They came an hour ago from the east and vanished into the forest. I think they might try to attack the airfield from the south in an attempt to flank them. I don't know how it's looking on the Airfield, but I think it can't be too good." Schlüter shrugged. "That's all I can give you, but I hope it helps."

"It will, thanks," you said and turned towards the trucks where your platoon leaders were gathering. Some of the soldiers were also leaving the lorries. They took up guard positions in the watering trenches next to the road. At least they followed protocol, even if a look at them told you how frightened they all were. Heck, you weren't any better if you were honest with yourself. You made a gesture towards your platoon leaders, and they gathered around you. With the help of Schlüter, you brought them up to date with what you knew and asked for their opinions.

"I think we should take care of the blocking force down the street first," Leutnant Schweizer from the 1st Platoon said and pointed on the map. "We have the numerical advantage, and any reinforcements coming from the front has to pass through if they wish to reach the airfield. And if it's true that they have AT-weapons, they could be a real problem for us later on if we don't take care of them now."

"Not saying you aren't right, Schweizer, but to be honest, the flanking maneuver has me more worried at the moment. Schlüter and his guys can stay here and warn any reinforcements coming up the street of the ambush. But the company that is marching through the woods could mean real problems for the defenders at the airfield. If they manage to pull that flanking off, that's it, no more Jagel," was Leutnant Klausen's opinion, he was the commander of the 2nd Platoon.

You look to the last and oldest of your officers. Franz Steiger commanded the 3th Platoon and was a reservist after he had spent fifteen years in the Bundeswehr as an officer. He returned your look for a moment before he sighed. "I think both ideas are shit, but we don't have the luxury to wait for reinforcements, it won't get any easier if we wait. We will face soldiers who will have better equipment and most likely better training. I don't know which option is better, but whatever you choose to do, sir, I don't think we should split our forces at any means."

[ ] Attack the blocking force of maybe two platoons with AT-weapons.
Get new mission objective: Defeat the blocking force, 2 VP
Expected enemy: 2x Platoons of air mobile infantry or paratroopers.

[ ] Attack the forest with a company of enemies who are flanking the airfield defenders.
Get new mission objective: Defeat the flanking force 2 VP

After you had informed them of what you wanted to do, they nodded, and the four of you began to plan your attack. You only had three platoons under your command, so you had to make the most out of them. Of the three, only the third one had any heavy equipment in the form of some MG3s. Should things get too hot, you could also try to call Battlefield Support. Most support is focused on the frontline further to the south or directly involved in defense of the airfield you were sent to relieve.
