Military affairs at the strategic and grand strategic level are naturally intertwined with politics, and thus require senior officers to start "playing the game" outside of their institution as it were.
Historically, a number of the world's most notable military commanders also possessed a significant degree of diplomatic acumen and/or political tact enabling them to either foster cooperation amongst otherwise antagonistic commanders, provide key insights to non-military officials on issues other than from military standpoints, and even run for government office (with varying degrees of success as both candidates and official leaders).
Which generals and admirals throughout history excelled in this ability?
Special mention will go to the senior flag officers who can be vindicated in the modern day or were ahead of their time.
(Will move to different sub-forum if necessary.)
