How would both our world and the Avatar world react?
Avatar
Lets set the scene its January 1st 2018, 9:00 pm and portals to the world of Avatar just appear. The portals would be permanent and won't fade in or out of existence.
There is total of 68 portals both in our world and in Avatar. Some portals would appear ocean while most would appear on land. This event would take place right after Aang is released from his icy prison. Also their would be language barrier between the two different worlds. The portals are circles and there sizes are varied, the smallest being the height size of a human to the max height size of 50 foot or 15.24 meters.

5 portals would appear on land while 5 portals would appear on the ocean, connecting Japan and the Fire Nation.

10 portals would appear on land while 3 portals would appear on the ocean, connecting China and the Earth Kingdom.

3 portals would appear on land while 2 portals would appear on the ocean, connecting the ( former) Air nomads and Tibet.

10 portals would appear on land while 10 portals would appear on the ocean, connecting Canada and the Northern Water Tribes.

10 portals would appear on land while 10 portals would appear on the ocean, connecting United States and the Southern Water Tribes.

Imperialism would activate in full force, China will go full Revolution on the Earth Kingdom, so even if Canada, Japan, and the US were inclined not to intervene, they'll go in anyway.

Also, Bhutan exists, so you don't need to give China double.

Various industries are revolutionized in short order. Earthbending and Metalbending pretty much replace the construction industry as it currently exists. Firebenders are explicitly shown to generate, on a normal human diet, enough energy via lightning-bending to power a large industrial city. That alone basically makes their society one big perpetual motion machine. All of them are, for various reasons, highly interesting in all sorts of military and civilian roles. Chances are many benders will end up highly paid specialists in all kinds of fields.

Australia feels very left out. Then turtleducks just start turning up. No one ever finds the portal they went through.

Yeah the ATLA world is conqured in short order.

Benders are largely "Persuaded" into breeding programs.

The space race is vastly accelerated.
With perpetual motion machines lots of the difficulties are solved.

It's dark, real dark.

The closest body of water to Tibet would be the bay of Bengal, imo.
Also, the other portal locations except the Earth Kingdom aren't perfect. The Fire Nation is as Thai as it is Japanese imo. The Southern Water Tribe are obviously Inuit, so Canada and Northern Alaska make sense.
I'd throw the one to the Northern Water Tribe to Antarctica to be contrarian.

What's with the numbers also? The Water Tribe, the smallest after the Air Nomads, has 40 portals total, whilst the Earth Kingdom, which far outnumbers all others, has 13.

what about the fogy swamp tribe?

Regarding tibet and air nomads I wouldnt add any in the ocean but I would also add portals for Bhutan and those 2 small indian provinces that have tibetan buddhist mayority.
The northern water tribe should also have a portal to Greenland, were the mayority are inuits. Also why connect the souther water tribe with the states? Just have portals in Alaska to the northern water tribe and instead connect the southern tribe with the indigenous communities of southern patagonia in Argentina and Chile. where some natives used to live a similar life style to the inuits.
The swamp water tribes can be connected with portals to the amazonian natives and similar groups maybe?
Earth kingdom is fine altho maybe the koreans (the two of them) can get some portals too? Also does Taiwan (ROC) also get portals?
Also what about the sand benders in the earth kingdom? Are they just connected to the chinese deserts? They could be connected to some other places, like central asia or the middle east.
Fire nation to japan looks fine altho there is couple more real life cultural influences in the FN as others have noted.

Also worth noting that the date of the Avatar world is super important. If it's current as of the end of LoK, everything becomes a heck of a lot more even, though since the United Republic wasn't mentioned probably not. But the Earth Empire would give even China a run for their money.

How do you figure?

The Earth Empire for all its might and such still didn't have a very large empire in terms of population. The entire setting is pretty small in terms of population numbers. The central turning point of the setting is republic city, which appears to be roughly 1920s New York. They nearly got brought to ruin by a group of a few hundred terrorists armed with tasers.

Overall the entire setting is a hundred years behind us in terms of logistics. The entire world of avatar has at most 2 billion people in it, split amongst geographically diverse and contentious regions. China's got around 2 million troops, and a fairly modern army. I don't think the earth empire has anything that can deal with a helicopter or a jet, so it just comes down to a particularly aggressive policing action for the Chinese.

re: lightning bending. in the original show you had to be a master martial artist (a master among masters even) to pull that off, and doing it wrong could kill you.

so dont expect industrial production of lightening benders.

capitalism does a bunch of fuckery to thier world. neocolonial investment style. protected by earth guns. also, if some incidents are caused by benders stumbling through portals i could see that imperial invention ppl were talking about happening. 9/11 but its a firebender or earth bender having a breakdown or something.

warcrimes... just so many warcrimes...

avatarworld conventional forces dont stand a chance. guerillas tho could be real nasty, and honestly the earthers would deserve it.

spirits could also kick up a big fuss, but spirits are like natural disasters. they dont really discriminate for the most part.
