Honestly I wish someone else, preferable someone indie would steal the neptunia idea of anthromophic consoles having adventurers, if only because that is too good an idea for idea factory.

Seriously idea factory is basically...the Tommy Wiseau of jrpgs.

I didn't think I would like soulslikes. It turned out I in fact did like them. Though I do have a point I get frustrated enough at my inability to win a fight I throw off whatever self-imposed limitations I have and squish it like a bug. This happens in certain fights, so I can't say I'm great. But I do enjoy them, surprisingly.

Elden Ring is the best Soulsborne game because it understands the apex of Dark Souls is when a boss kicks my ass, looks at me and says "you're not good enough," and I wipe blood off my mouth, smirk and say "I know... But they are," and summon a clone of myself that has my exact build but 10x my stats and plays the game better than I do, then watch them turn Malenia into a thin paste

It's a metaphor, not a joke, which is why you didn't get it. The purpose wasn't funny. The purpose was to put the audiance in my shoes.

Here's the bluntest way to say it

"Boy I love fromsoft games! They do *thing that makes the game harder but doesn't improve enjoyment, or even is detrimental to enjoyment*. You should try it!"

"Uh... thanks" *Feverishly making sure all Fromsoft games are on my steam ignore list.*

And this is what basically every conversation about Dark Souls or Elden Rings feels like to me. So... the odds of me buying those games are low.

I'm not going to spend $10 on something where the most lauded aspects that people love the most are things I hate. And Fromsoft games cost more than $10.
You could end up like Yahtzee if you give it a chance :V

"Mimic Tear, I choose you!"

It's like Sabriel Plays Pokemon

I tried that... All she did was get all her health back whilst beating on my spirit ash... She would be one of my favorite boss fights if she didn't have that really annoying "Health Regain" Mechanic (I.E Everytime she hits you or your shield or summon she regains a big chunk of health)

This conversation is starting to feel like edging on how close we can get to Dark Souls difficulty discussion, without having a Dark Souls difficulty discussion.

edit-
And as my contribution.
I once had Malenia do the big aoe thingy (swallow dance?) 4 times in a row.
That was fun.

Yeah, you don't actually want Mimic Tear for her because they aren't super good at dodging (unless you have some fast nuke spells they can spam.) Try picking up Black Knife Tiche, who is more evasive? One of the only non mimic tear ashes I used a lot.

My spicy take about Elden ring is they should have gone way in on spirit ashes. Collecting ghost clones of enemies you see, including some minibosses, is very interesting! But it's slow to summon them in combat. It would be cooler if they were just part of your loadout and you always had at least one spirit ash up, and maybe move the bell consumable move to a buff or something.

Alright, new controversial game opinion: I find the 'aesthetics' of helldiver distasteful and vaguely existentially terrifying in a bad way because they remind me far too much of real world politics.

Well heeeey don't worry, we can force you to try yet another Souls game that you may or may not actually like, judging by how the Elden Ring thing they just announced has heavy roguelike vibes!

Ohhh no you don't, I put in good hours to make sure I had a sound, well researched, empirically supported dislike of the series. I have at least two more games before I have to renew those credentials :V

Propably controvesial, but best Soulsborne games are not made by FromSoftware. IMO Surge is far superior, basically taking away all the stuff that annoys me to no ends about Soulsborne games and fixes them. It also has, once again IMO, better leve design. Oh sure, there are less "maps", but each map is far more interconnected. There is only one "bonfire", but the map loops into itself so you are constantly opening new routes back to that Medical Center.

Haven't played either game, but that somehow sound like the Trirod form Echoes of Wisdom...

My favorite "souls like", as much as that term is worth, is probably Sekiro.

It doesn't have the insane build variety of Elden Ring, but in return it's absolutely narrowly focus on a single play style and refining on that made for an experience that was consistently great from beginning to end.

Since they know pretty precisely how a player was going to approach each part of the game they were able to design around it in really precise ways that just made it feel great to play. Sword Saint Isshin and Owl (Father) are still probably my favorite From bosses of all time.

Of course that narrow focus means if you don't vibe with the intended play style you can just bounce right off it, where in the other souls games there were a variety of alternate play styles you could try out. It really clicked for me though.

I gave dark souls a chance years ago and it didn't grip me at all. Lost interest after the tutorial dungeon and I really don't get what everyone hypes over it about. It just felt... lethargic to play.

Souls fans really need to be more okay with their precious game and its assorted successors not being for everyone because it gets very grating how much they really don't take no for an answer.

To be fair: that is explicitly the point.

Helldivers is intended to be a scathing critique of the Imperialist side of America and every single problem in the series was explicitly caused by Super Earth doing Imperialism things.

I can understand it being rather tough to look at with the modern situation though. Trust me and the word in my Location tag, I understand >>

This feels like a good time to state that I wasn't really able to get into Astro Bot. It's neat. It's kinda cute. I do not understand how it's been established as something so special.
The vast majority of people pushing for it are unfortunately retvrn freaks and losers who haven't played a platforming game since 2009. Several of them also pose as pundits in the Gaming Sphere (tm).

I just went through steam and made sure 'Souls like' and 'Roguelike' were on my ignore lists, and now the game-recommendation on the main page actually seem to represent my preference for colorful storytelling games with turn-taking or otherwise slow-paced gameplay loops that have plenty of little secrets hidden within to stumble across, but aren't actively collectathons.

(The eye-maze games are one of my all-time fav series)

This is unfortunately part of any fanbase of any type of experience, much less a specific type of game. The souls games are popular, and so you definitely see this kind of thing a lot, but it's really an element of human nature at this point.

Lies of P I think is far and away the best non-From entry to the genre. Understood that Bloodborne is where you should take cues from.

Yeah I can point at... basically any popular game fanbase, and you'll be able to find examples of people who just don't seem to get that... no actually not everyone is going to like whatever your favorite game is for any number of reasons? Just look at Undertale/Deltarune fans, who not only will take any opportunity to push their game on to you, but also used to get super duper mad if you play Undertale the "wrong" way (translation: doing literally anything other than a 100% pacifist playthrough).

Souls games are just a big and popular enough thing by this point that there's always going to be those somewhat obnoxious crowds who try to push the game on you no matter whether or not you would actually be interested, just like they've also got that obnoxious completely unironic "Git Gud" crowds.
